But you see, Weiss is forgivable because she's one of the main characters, of course! Who cares about Whitley, who is still struggling and trapped in a toxic family without anyone caring about him?? After all, Weiss was able to leave Atlas to pursue her dreams as a huntress (with her allowance still in tact, only being taken away when she started ignoring her father's calls)? He should've been FIIIIINE with Winter barely being home to protect him, his mother being a useless drunk and his father being emotionally abusive and manipulative!

They made Whitley seemed like he was redeemed or something for calling in the butler, but like he never needed redemption at all. Once again, they keep pulling the MC’s are the best characters and you should only like them stick, instead of actually working and giving these characters a story. They need to put work into actually making them likable instead of telling us that there are so likable

Whitley chastised Weiss for leaving(getting away from the influence of her oppressive and depressing family) but he has the ability to do the exact same thing.
When their mother pointed out that he doesn't want anything to do with her because she left him alone with them, it ignores the fact that he is a fully functioning person who has the ability to make choices for himself.
That line makes it seem like Weiss had 2 options either stay in the misery of living in the oppressive situation, or drag Whitley along with her regardless of whether he wants to go or not.

It’s because the fandom has a double standard when it comes to male characters. If female characters have traumatic backstories, it justifies everything those characters have done in their minds (e.g.: Ilia and Emerald), while male characters with equally traumatic backstories don’t receive the same sympathy (e.g.: Adam and Mercury). I’m willing to bet that if they genderswapped Adam and Ilia, the stans would be worshiping Adam as an incredible character while calling Ilia an incel

Ever notice how EVERY conversation with Whitley ALWAYS has Whitley initiate the conversation? Ever notice how Whitley, as bratty as he is, is always trying to strike up a conversation with Weiss? Yang complained about how Whitley wouldn't leave Weiss alone, which is interesting. Weiss claims that Whitley wants nothing to do with her, and yet every time Whitley is around, he tries to talk to Weiss. He's condescending, he's rude, he's annoying. But he's always trying to talk to her.

I mean it's p obvious to me that jacques groomed whitley into the position of his perfect heir when he realized that he couldn't control weiss. How hard is it to manipulate a emotionally vulnerable child who's been abndoned by everyone in his life and is just looking for someone to be there for him? We've never been shown jacques actually be affectionate with whitley at all, in fact he seem to ignore him 90% of the time and the only time we've ever seen them interact, jacques literally yells at him to get out of his office. And what perks did whitley get out of being the perfect son? A picture on jacques' desk and a parking spot. That's it. Am I wrong in this interpretation? Bc I really don't want this to be what the writers intended AND whitley is still shit on by the fandom and in the show. Honestly, it's clear they're writing the characters exactly how the fans want them to be written. Fandom can't comprehend how the main crew can ever be wrong and the writers follow suit. All four of them are written that way.
The reason why Weiss was the most enjoyable out of the four was because she was allowed to be wrong and grow. But now that she has been "reformed" she too now joins them.
It's just garbage writing from beginning to end.

I agree, you do want to write a story/show for an audience and demographic, but they shouldn’t let the fans control the story too much. The audience is there to witness the story, so the writers just should focus on creating that first. Also, constructive criticism can be fine and helpful too, but caving to the fans who send threats about how a two characters should get together or something minor, then you sacrifice so much to make these kinds of toxic people happy. The writers of this show is listen to the wrong fans, cause toxic fans will never be happy. They gotta put an actual story first. Also I agree with the writing being garbage from beginning to end!

    • @mrmetroid1078

I... really don't see that. Like, at all ^_^
      - Blake's been shown as "wrong" plenty of times in regards to how she treated relationships and connections as something to run away from, treating herself like a bad luck charm that could only ever hurt people with her presence; Sun had to hammer it into her head that wanting to protect those kinds of connections are what give people strength and that it's not Blake's right to decide who people should or shouldn't feel is worth fighting for.
      - Yang was treated as wrong for letting loss get to her and allowing Ruby to just walk off into danger. To a lesser extent, I think V6 might also have (surprisingly) treated Yang as wrong for how she bashed Raven - when she was in that position herself at Brushwick Farms, Yang made the same choice her mother did and advocated abandoning the world to Salem in favor of them saving themselves. Sure the Apathy Grimm influenced her, but they didn't create those feelings; they just fed what was already there after the reveals about Ozpin, and snapping out of it was what led her to realize just giving up would make everything they did pointless.
      - For Ruby... well, frankly speaking, I think the entirety of V7-8's main plot is basically one big billboard saying "Ruby was wrong." The whole reason there's even a schism between them and Ironwood is because Ruby not only liked to him about Salem, but she *manipulated* him through those lies by having him focus on Amity Tower to reconnect the kingdoms instead of focusing on Atlas' defenses to protect Mantle's people. Now Salem's knocking on the door with their defenses not shored up and, because Ruby absconded with the Winter Maiden, Ironwood doesn't even have access to the Staff of Creation to try and save even the people in Atlas and is basically being forced by the situation to defend everyone (regardless of he has the manpower or resources to even do that) or let everyone die trying. Even Ruby's own team have fractured because they're not longer certain she's making the right calls.
      - I'm pretty sure how Weiss initially gave Whitley the cold shoulder *is* being treated as a mistake, though(?). Do you remember in V1 how abysmally bad Weiss was at connecting with people? Well, retroactively apply that to her past life and you can probably get an idea of how interactions with her and Whitley must have been - which is to say not all that good since Whitley was arguably just as bad connecting to people as Weiss, made worse by him never getting out into the world like she eventually did. Furthermore, Weiss in the early volumes seemed to believe circumstances didn't dictate personage - that what mattered most was what a person chose to be, not where they came from; hell, half the basis of her argument with Blake was based on a seeming belief that no circumstances the faunus suffered could have justified the White Fang's actions. Is it really that surprising that misunderstanding of how much circumstances affect one's perceptions could have made her mistake Whitley as choosing to be like his father rather than simply not knowing better, much less that she's only realized now that this was a mistake?

Weiss: (Looks down with regret). "I know." (She looks back up) "Whitley... I'm sorry."
(Whitley turns to her in surprise).

The reason Whitley is not treated equally to Weiss when they both have the same upbringing is because the fandom and CRWBY are biased against the male characters. Ever noticed how all of the female villains get sob stories to make the audience feel bad and have a chance for redemption (e.g. Ilia, Raven, Emerald, Salem), while the male villains aren’t given the same treatment despite having equal if not worse backstories (e.g.: Adam, Mercury)? The most recent and blatant example is Cinder's origin episode, where the stans are now fawning all over her and acting as if her childhood trauma justifies all of her actions (check the reaction channels after Watts roasts Cinder), while they still call Adam the scum of the Earth

Though from RT writing I expected Whitley to rat out weiss & co (understandably), be full on villain(like every other white male who isn't simping for team RWBY), and then get beaten to show his place (most likely by weiss bitchslapping him for another yaaass queen moment), so yeah, them having him actually do something good was pretty surprising (even if still poorly written).

This video honestly made me realize how much males who are abused are shut down upon. While, the females and the fans are like “oh my god you’ve suffered so much!! You deserve all the love!”
So, first as you said in the video Whitley is also the same victim as much as Weiss is. (And Winter) but, the fans are honestly head over heels for Weiss. While like 95% of the fandom LOVE Weiss. And the other 5% just like Whitley. The poor boy followed his fathers orders so he didn’t get abused or treated wrongly like the sisters did. He was smart in that aspect.
Now, moving on, let’s go to another abuse victim, that many people don’t really notice, or well hell...even care about. The Ozma incarnations. In v6 he’s desperately trying to hide the truth from the group and Oscar. Yet fails in doing so. But while they come back from the vision he gets yelled at for what? Lying? He didn’t lie. When did the group ever ask about what truly happened at Beacon? Why he reincarnated...they never did. Never on screen at least, and that’s the issue. Ozma has been abused for many years, the amount of times he’s been roaming the world. And everyone praises Salem? Seriously? This immortal witch who killed his kids, ruined his past lives, over and over again. And traumatized him. That’s just heartless.
People often forget that Ozpin didn’t know what truly happened after he died. It was a surprise as much as it was to the others. The fact he was crying shows that much, of how he was blinded to begin with, when Salem was truly changing...he was blind to it before it was too late.
It’s okay to have your favorite character, but not understanding the other side of the coin is rather...sad. And not mentioning of the abuse that the male characters go through.

It's like the only way these "real fans" of the show can watch it is by cherry picking what they want to remember so it fits their head cannon. Ignoring the problems in a show can be done if the show has so many other positives that the few negatives don't ruin the experience. V8 has taught me one thing: The writers can do absolutely no wrong in the fans eyes. They can pull anything out of their ass, no matter how nonsensical/poorly executed (Saying Ruby's semblance has no mass, Ironwood's semblance, Ironwood shooting someone for no reason, Weiss' behavior towards Whitley, etc) and the fans will accept it without question. I mean, in the scenario that they weren't aware in the first place and the meeting with Wiess' mother never happened, it would be more understandable as just more bad writing but I'm just confused as to why they would specifically make note of her brother being under pressure and then make Wiess act like this. I know Barb has informed us that "It's a cartooooon",but lets be real; if you, a teenage "huntress", has death incarnate attack your home city, the FIRST thing you'd do is check on remaining family members who are in the the same building as you. I mean damn, even if my sibling was annoying, I'd at least put it aside since we could die at any moment, and I certainly wouldn't point a fucking lance at them.

It seems that they don't won't to treat that scene (along with many other scenes) seriously, and only what 'they' feel is serious enough to warrant attention. That dumb excuse that Barb has stated can actually be turned against her (or anyone that agrees with that statement). It means you can also use that excuse on her and others when there are 'certain moments' they want you to take seriously. If they don't want certain scenes (that are supposed to be taken seriously) to be taken seriously, then that means the scenes they 'feel' is important can't also be taken seriously. For example, all of the shipping she and some others want to be taken seriously. However, by her own words, it shouldn't be taken seriously sense 'It's a cartooon!'. So she and others shouldn't be surprised there are people who're just flat out ignoring the 'shipping' aspect when they are ignoring aspects that are supposed to be serious to begin with (story, lore, etc.).

Weiss and Whitley's arc feels a lot like her arc with Blake and Weiss. She doesn't work towards anything in the arc, it just has other characters do stuff to prove that she was wrong about them and she recognizes the fact. It lacks agency on her part because she does nothing to work towards encouraging them to do the things that makes her change her mind about them, they just happen without her actually taking part in what in an arc she's involved in.
What concerns me is that this isn't the first time they did it. They did it in Volume 1, when the writers were inexperienced and still trying to figure out what they were doing with the show. That was the only major criticism of Volume 1 I can remember. That the plotline lacked an important character moment for Weiss, who was central to it. It's one thing to make a mistake once, it's another to continue making that mistake. It means that for all you've learned, you still haven't changed.

  • @didles123

I actually really dislike the scene where Willow tells Weiss not to forget about Whitley.
    1. Weiss says that Whitley wants nothing to do with her and Willow confirms that sentiment. Willow should have challenged that statement. Whitley is always the one to initiate interactions with Weiss and Weiss is the one whose attitude comes off as wanting nothing to do with him. Not only that, but Weiss accuses Whitley of hating her, but her actions toward Whitley come off as far more hateful and malicious than anything he has done to her on screen.
    2. It is so strange for Willow to remind Weiss that she left Whitley alone with Jacques and her. She is both acknowledging that she is a bad mother and can't be trusted to treat Whitley well while simultaneously telling Weiss to treat him better. Doesn't she recognize how her blatant hypocrisy undermines her request? She should at least have conveyed that she wants to be a better mother rather than just accepting she is a bad mother and putting everything on Weiss.
This show seems so meta at times. It's as if Weiss is a stand-in for the audience. Willow isn't telling Weiss to have sympathy for Whitley. She is telling the audience to have sympathy for Whitley. Whitley is not redeeming himself to his sister but to the audience, and Weiss is hugging him for doing what the audience would have wanted. When has Weiss ever acted like she believed Whitley was good inside? From their very first interaction she treated him like a villain.
It would have been so much better if some other character pointed out the weirdness of Weiss and Whitley's relationship in a way that got her to reconsider her treatment of Whitley.

@@randomcenturion7264 Honestly, I always felt that one of RWBY's biggest faults is that it can't ever haved the main team be blatantly in the wrong and own up to it.
Blake ran away to join the White Fang out of he rown agency. Adam didn't manipulate her or force her to join. I'm also willing to bet Blake committed serious crimes in said group on her own.
Yang trashed Junior's bar...and even if he had some shady dealings, it's pretty clear Yang wasn't there trying to be a hero but even close to a client looking for information on Raven. Her actions were motivated out of selfishness.
Ruby lashed out at Ozma/Oscar...but to be honest: Ozma is the solw reason that Humanity has endured for centuries in the fight against the Grimm HE beuilt that Academies and founded the Huntsmen as a profession on his own. Show some gratitude.
Salem is immortal and can't die? The same Salem whom has been alive just as long as Ozma? No duh! SO what id you want to do? GIve up and go home or do the same job you've been doing since day one: Fight the Grimm and keep pushing forward?
Then there's everything said about Weiss. She, more than Whitley or Winter, is the most like her father in my opinion. I always felt her character arc should've been about her realizing that while she was emotionally NEGLECTED (I don't count that slap asasign that she was physically abused, at least not severely) she in turn has become the abuser towards her YOUNGER brother.
Weiss is easily among the most judgmental of the main cast of everyone she meets, in a series all about the importance of individuality...and yet they try toact like she's the most developed. I loathe Weiss just because her entire character stance is the most in your face and fake.

As someone else in the comments pointed out, Weiss had a support system- *She* could escape the house, *she* had friends, *she* had power. Whitley doesn't have that. Anyone back from the dead, foundational power systems are meaningless and subject to change. The writers are too afraid to kill a main character, that's why clover was even written in just to die in the same season. Clover died in an attempt to satisfy the lack of stakes the writers had created. The writers need to stick with the world system they originally created and frankly ignore ships if it's not what they intended and want for the character. I didn't find Weiss'es blindness too unbelievable, because I've known myself and others to have a harder time seeing what's in their own family, than in other people's. I mean, Whitely "never liked her" as she says in Vol 4, though, that could be because she never liked him either, as vol 8 would suggest. But some people are just unable to let go of their prejudice against their family. Even though her mom spelled it out for her, guilt is a powerful motivator to be blind--however, I'd think any one of her friends standing there who have all (especially Blake) had misunderstandings with their family, would have called her out for treating him so badly, and giving him the chance to stab them in the back. It's just luck that he ended up not being a prick, they gave him no reason not to sell them out. Also, I agree Weiss'es "make up" was the worst I've probably every heard outside of an anime, maybe.

Family dynamics are complicated. It’s a dysfunctional family. Of course they’ll be some hypocrisy bc one side only knows their perspective. I agree that Weiss should take some time to talk her brother at SOME point. But she left that environment (including her brother) for a reason.
Whitley was always portrayed as Jacques shadow. Couldn’t be trusted. Whitley is a victim too, yes very much so. And his relationship with both his sisters were fractured and unhealthy because of the environment they all grew up in.
The Schnee family is very bad at expressing or dealing with emotions effectively. Unstable environment, unhappy relationships, mom became an alcoholic, dad is a pompous prick. They each handled it in their own way.
Weiss and Winter had each other, but Whitley? Not so much. So you can’t expect them to be all “lets solve all our family issues.”
Winter and Weiss were close (in their own weird way) and look at them now. They’re divided and now Whitley and Weiss had a decent genuine encounter for probably the first time in several years. What’s wrong with that? She realized he may not be the same prick their dad is. Maybe they have more in common then they thought. A realization like that doesn’t happen overnight and words alone don’t mean much. It was the action he did that spoke for itself and got her attention. Everyone, whether you like Whitley or not, noticed it because his actions spoke louder than anything else. It was a breakthrough for him. Weiss would be an idiot if she didn’t notice or respond. She did. It was the first positive interaction between them in years. She didn’t expect much or anything from him.
Relationships and communication are a two way street. Whitley initiated with positive action and Weiss responded positively. Prior to that, they just bickered. It’s unfair to say or claim that Weiss is a bad sister when the same could be said about Whitley as a brother. Weiss had her reasons. Whitley had his. Again, it’s a two way street. Weiss initially reacted negatively towards her brother as it always has been. Whitley stepped up and extended an olive branch. The gesture didn’t go unnoticed.
So what’s the issue? Families are complex like that.

I wonder if Whitley used to be rebellious like Weiss, but eventually fell in line. Could that be when he became Jacques' favorite?

Volume 7 & 8 has done nothing but unironically justify just how bad team RWBY are as characters. They act like self righteous assholes while embodying the flaws they apperantly hate.
It's almost like they've all become twitter self inserts...

You know what? I’m saying what we all know, of all three siblings Weiss is the most like her father.

Weiss was my least favorite RWBY team member, then she became both my favorite and at least the only tolerable one.
But Volume 8 is starting to change that, until she apologizes to Whitley for only showing affection or care after he does ONE thing SHE approves of. The kid's a brat, but wasn't she at the start?

I'm really at the point where i think CRWBY don't even care to remember the previous character dynamics they established. Like seriously, if you're gonna have 2 characters interacting, make them more than just two flat pieces talking to each other for no reason. Do they have history, are things about them potential stresses for their relationship, do they dislike one another, do they want to kill each other? Do they secretly care for each other but hide it behind other actions? Consistency and execution make these kind of scenes so much better.
