Meghalaya: Tourist cancellations surge after NGO halts commercial vehicles

On July 26, a sudden halt on commercial vehicles from entering Meghalaya by an NGO at Umtyngar led to a significant drop in tourist bookings, with cancellations reaching about 30%. This has caused concern among tourists, though the association has assured them that the situation is now calm.
Gerald Duia, General Secretary of Tourism Operators Association of Meghalaya during a conversation with EastMojo mentioned that July is usually a lean month, but many day tours come in from Assam. He also added that the cancellations affected tours to popular destinations like Sohra and Dawki, forcing operators to divert guests to other locations, disrupting their operations.
The association submitted a letter of concern to the tourism minister on July 29. They believe that adopting a strategy similar to Sikkim's is not feasible for the state. Instead, they suggest that the tour operators association and the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association work together to find a solution.

To bring to notice this happen not in highway or national highway but a road that is beyond the ending of meghalaya towards Bangladesh roads .any person was not a victim that come and go to silchar or to shillong on the way for meeting ,bussiness or personal emergency, so why so much hue and cry .If the person from outside the state don't understand the problem of cab drivers from the state he got good excuses to the tourist to return back but if he care for the tour he would make them continue that day by exchanging the tourist with the local cab problem solve .....
This proves your stupidity. First of all, the demand is against Assam tourist vehicles not against tourists visiting the state. Their demand is only to make sure that while in Meghalaya only Meghalaya tourist vehicles should get the privilege to ferry tourists to and from different tourist spots within the state, which makes a complete sense at the end of the day. In Assam Meghalaya vehicles are being disturbed and looted for a simple reason as dropping passengers, so you tell me if in the state of Assam they are being oppressed and looted and again in their own state of Meghalaya too they can't earn. Meghalaya tourists drivers are facing difficulties to even provide for their families, leave aside the vehicle EMI that they have to pay to the bank. So I tell you, get to know both sides of the story before making quick judgements. Nothing in this world will happen without a valid reason. Thank you!

I am from arunachal, in my opinion I think those who want to visit Meghalaya can contact a tourist cab of meghalaya. Since they know well about every part of meghalaya. And those who wants to go to assam should contact assam tourist cab since they know well bout assam. Private vehicle on both sides should be free. Why making too much issue on this

I saw tourist spot in meghalaya, the local people are earning 100 rupees a day money from selling maize in the roads side and collecting one or ten rupees from public toilet,,,,,, where as the benami earning big amount of money from home stay dhaba etc.....😃🤪😲😮🤣

Don't worry. Your demands are sensible and justified. I think the government can allow the Assam registered taxis to bring the tourists till Shillong. On reaching Shillong, tourists should shift to local-driven taxis. This makes complete sense. The local economy should benefit from all the tourism.
And I think y'all don't have to worry. Even if people from Assam boycott your state (for now), people from other NE regions will gladly come to your state for holidays, using private vehicles or via flights.

All Indians have rights to travel to all the Indian states. So there should be no prohibition of any sort for the tourists. However, ILP is essential for all the states for internal security. Besides for hilly stations heavy vehicles should not be allowed to enter. Govt should also go for plans to curb pollutions in the hilly stations due to heavy traffic.

Living in Shillong for 20+ years and I belong to one of the major tribe(garo) of meghalaya yet even we garos face racism. We garos are called as muid( buffalo) in khasi dialect. Of course not khasis are racist but trust me there are lots of racist people out here and I have one such racist lady who live near my house. Me and my family faced many problems living here, I wish the meghalaya government develop other region like garo hills so that we don't have to come to Shillong for higher education!

As far as i know Checking ILP by KSU i think it's a part of the demonstration to remind the State Goverment and central goverment that Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed the ILP resolution in November 19 2019 but till date the GOI through MHA haven't approved or granted ILP to the Meghalaya State. Beating and assaulting non- tribal workers are not true because if it's true then why they didn't complaint to police station or to MRC? We are not siding with criminals either they are Meghalayan. Regarding to tourists harrassment you refering to the recent incident taken by HNYF members from our side we condempt them and we are not supporting it because it was wrong. In any community there are good people and bad people but most Meghalayan are good people and law abiding citizens.

Travelled to Assam many times but u hardly see Meghalaya Tourist vehicles there except Guwahati whereas in shillong roads are filled with assam tourist vehicles even causing long traffic jams,so its a good solution if assam tourist vehicles enter the city and if tourist wants to go side seeing they can book a local tourist or cab from here,same goes for meghalaya tourist vehicles going to Assam.

Never ever saw a tourism spot or shops in Assam any where as if the people of Assam have stopped them to open any. And tried to search the same web site for booking but never found any. And those I found majority of them were of the people of Assam and west Bengal. And if you wanted soo much tourist why didn't you all allow the Railways to come to the state. If the people didn't had to get down In Assam there wouldn't have been a need to book a cab from there.. My friend was planning to come with his family and now they have cancelled. What if the NGO from other state start doing the same to their people. Almost the entire govt project of skill development of Meghalaya are in Assam and what if they start chasing them out or don't even allow them to enter. Even the private ones like what happened in Meghalaya. Wow!!

Shillong Taxi drivers charge too much money to visit tourist places. Moreover even if you travel within the Shillong town. The local Taxi drivers charge from 200 to 500 rupees from point A to point B. I was charged 300 from Golflink to police bazaar. That too in a shared taxi. I came to know that the charges are actually divided between the passengers who share a taxi. Won't visit Shillong again.

Regarding ILP issue, it should be between govt and the organizations , there is no point in harassing the tourist from other states for this internal issues cause it only reflects lawlessness in the society.
And secondly ,regarding the local taxi issue, it should be completely the tourist liberty to choose either a cab from Assam or a local cab from shillong for their sight seeing.What is the point to induce a sense of fear in the minds of the tourists, it only brings a bad reputation to the state and its culture.And if the local taxi's gives an excellent service and a fair prices for their customers than definitely people will choose local taxis over Assam taxis.

This is the problems of Meghalaya government can't have it's own fledged Airport . Umroi Airport is not possible as a full fledged Airport as bigger plane can't land there except 72 seater plane. The State meghalaya should seriously consider finding an alternative place to Umroi for building a full fledged Airport
I have been to Meghalaya many times but i have always faced the arrogance, Zero Negotiation with fare and Language barrier with the local taxi drivers of Meghalaya, so one automatically is bound to book the taxi from assam, or the non local drivers of Meghalaya. So the local needs to reconsider their behaviour first

I am a student from shillong Meghalaya and am ashamed of what these stupid pressure groups have done in completely making a bad image of our state and reputation of us the khasi people. We the majority of citizens are never like this -
