I grew up in Langhorne, PA and about 2 blocks from my house there was a vacant lot where we kids used to play. Digging for treasure, building forts, catching poison ivy. Our parents used to tell us not to dig there because there were bodies buried. Everybody thought this was some myth or unfounded story. Many years later a developer, I don't know the exact circumstances, began digging there , apparently with the idea of building houses? And sure enough, there were bodies buried there. I seems the old church across the street was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers after the battles of Trenton and Princeton, and those who died were buried in unmarked graves in the field across the street. Of course, development was stopped and today there is a memorial cemetery on the site. Moral of this story, always listen to your mother even if what she's saying sounds crazy to you.

I often walk through the Mt. Zion cemetery when visiting the Cloister (I volunteer there). Anyone can walk through the grounds without paying admission. Guided tours, however, you would need to pay for. Some of the married members of this community, known as householders, are ancestors of mine.

This is a great exhibit at the cocalico valley historical society (on Main Street in ephrata) that details the efforts of creating that memorial. I think they started collecting funds around the 1850s. There was a huge celebration in 1902 to celebrate the monument. It’s amazing to think that ephrata was the closest place to send those sick and wounded soldiers… valley forge and brandywine are not exactly around the corner!

I like the saying on the monument "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori"- It is sweet and proper to die for ones country. From the Odes (III.2.13) by Roman lyric poet Horace

Oh, very good content. I never knew they moved Rev. War soldiers to other hospitals as they did in the Civil War. I'll have to stop there next time I go over to Ephrata.

I grew up in Greenwich, Cumberland county, NJ. About 90 miles from my place in Millersville. That's where they burned the tea! It is a colonial town, mostly still there. You would absolutely love it. 2 m7seaums, homes fro. 1650s to 1920s. Shipping history, started as a Market town. Very active I. the revolution. There is a ]place called hospital farm...revolutionary hospital. Several very old cemetaries.

I just drove 272 past there this week. I wondered if you had a video on the Ephrata Cloister. I don’t know any of the history of it.

Nice. There's one by my mother-in-law's house. It's a mine drainage tunnel with a passable collapse, but I need someone to go in with
