@@ugahenne Referee blows a double whistle the second coming after the ball is rolling. That is the wrong signal for a restart. Listen for yourself. Gabriel clearly thinks he wants the kick retaken. If the referee had given a penalty, he wouldn't have been allowed to referee again. If the referee blows the wrong signal, he can't penalize the defender for following it. I suspect he said that HE made a kid's mistake, not Gabriel and it got changed in translation.
I don't think Saka should have a penalty either, he cant make that cut and is all arms and legs, running into Neuer. He is too far away from the ball, and out of control to be still considered in possession of the ball. It isn't a penalty and it isn't a dive either. Referee made the right call.
Honestly I thought the referee was terrific. I give him an A+.

If you actually followed the press conference, it is very clear the ref meant the PLAYERS made a kids mistake and that HE can't give this as a PK in a UCL quarter final.
Saka was close to a dive for me, b/c he deliberately initiates contact w/ Neuer to get a nice dive out of it. But definitely not a PK, for sure, agree.

@sigfigronath it's a goal kick,the ref does not blow his whistle to restart before a goal kick,according to the law,the goalkeeper played the ball and it was in play when the player picked it up,that was supposed to be a penalty.(it makes no diference wether it was harmless or not),it would be the same if the goalkeeper passed the ball Into his own net from that situation.(it would have been an own goal according to the law)

Though personally I think it would make sense to call a penalty as well cuz although saka clearly seeks contact, neuer does put his foot out and the contact is clear. It's a 50/50 decision that some refs would call while others won't

The rules of the game should be constant. You can't suddenly change them because we are in the advanced stages of a competition. Remember football is just as much about mental fortitude as it is about the physical and technical ability. A defender doing that shows lack of presence of mind which is part of the game. This is a school boy error …it’s a rule …plain & simple
You get punished for making mistakes that break the rules. Accidental handballs, kicking an opponent on a follow through, stepping on a foot, etc... So if it was a "kid's mistake" then there should be a consequence enforced by the referee. A penalty seems like a harsh consequence for this mistake, but the rules exist and should not be arbitrarily ignored on a whim.

The only reason it wasn't given as a penalty was because the Referee decided that in his own personal judgement it was a kids error so not worth punishing.
That's a worry. There are some very clear rules in FOOTball.
It matters if a player is overwhelmed, not paying attention, and makes a crucial error. Players used to be praised for their awareness of the game state.

People don’t understand that sometimes the “rules” can’t be stuck to so much. If a player doesn’t know what is happening and makes a mistake it does not deserve for the entire game to be cost. Yes, he picked up the ball, but did he cheat? Did he cause a Bayern player to be unable to get to it? Did he block a shot with it? No. It’s not like Bayern could have taken advantage of it.
There is a reason why there are rules in the first place,if the player can't read and understand those rules then he should not be fit to compete in the first place.

Refereeing a Champions League match has nothing to do with strictly applying the rule book.
