What's the total cost excluding camera
I think you're missing an old Scandinavian trick. Check out the base layers from Brynje. It's basically a technical string vest that traps warm air against the skin, creating fast-drying, lightweight insulation and protecting you from sweat and moisture in your layers. Used by Hillary on Everest, and popular with Arctic explorers and Special Forces.
Interesting to see you are using the cotton Ventile shell. I love this in snow because it's quiet, wind-proof and breathable (though I don't like the price tag!). But I can't really agree that it works well in rain. It will keep you dry enough, but it gets sodden, heavy, prone to freezing solid, and takes forever to dry. I wouldn't use it if there was an serous risk of it getting wet.
You even use bigger sizes for your ski boots

When I was a kid, my family lived in Alaska. The snow was so high in our yard that I dug a tunnel into it. My sister's and I used play outside in the backyard pretending that we were roughing it in the great outdoors.
I like this style of no talking in the video, then doing a voice over afterwards.

I lived in north pole Alaska for my freshman year of high school and instead of normal p.e. class they had a program called "project adventure" that taught us survival skills like archery and cold climate living. It was the most amazing, useful and fun time of my entire school career. That was where I learned that wool above any other material will save your life. Even if you fall through the ice and into freezing water wool can be rung out and still worn to keep you warm and alive. Goose down jackets are a no no! If they don't drag you under water by the weight of wet feathers, it'll never dry properly and usually ends up with all the down bunched up in the bottom of your coat, leaving you cold, wet and most likely dying.
Goose down is very good as long as it's dry. It's one of the best weight / warm ratio. If you don't go over water and you carry it in an hermetic bag for rain you won't risk much.

I live in Alberta and we have very harsh winters.Wool is the only thing we rely on for survival.

And I was cold just listening to the wind howling across the snow plain. Wind proof and some clothing bigger so it will go over a lot of layers is important. Thank you my friend. David e agreed, my first EN video was a mid summer very rainy afternoon where EN pitches a tarp, builds a fire, then brews coffee under the tarp. As a HiFi person, I truly love his high end stereo microphones for recording. Listening on headphones is maximum enjoyment.
I agree his work is so restful. Just listening to his meandering pace made me feel like i was sitting next to a babbling brook without a care in the world. Sadly now back to reality...dx

I also think these kind of videos are great because they help people to get out there. Especially in the harsh conditions. I wouldn't mind some even more detailed information like the fill and fill power of the insulated jacket for example.

My thin wool socks dry quite quickly on my chest while I sleep at night. I usually don’t have to use my spare pair.

Brother. Great video. As always. Growing up in central Newfoundland I was taught from an early age to layer. I grew up skiing and snowshoeing in the deep winter. The cold or storms never stopped me. But I will tell you something...I wish I had those foot bags years ago. They look awesome.

I'm Canadian, and while I did love seeing all of your layers, especially all that Merino, I'm absolutely astounded that you haven't included a balaclava, not even anything for your neck. That's how you get tonsil issues or strep throat. Gotta keep that throat warm, and if you can get a good neoprene balaclava on under the hat, even better. It cuts the wind and cold in a way that you can't imagine.
True. Your head can need layers as much as any other part of the body. I wear a thin fabric swimming cap under my main hat just as an extra layer when it's bitterly cold.
Also it significantly warms up inflated air, making possible hard work at any temperature.

The plastic bag trick seems a really good idea. Would have loved to know that trick when I was in the Austrian military as a mountaineer. We always had very wet shoes after a hard day outside and even with the shoes in the sleeping bag they wouldn't get dry over night. Just a quick tip for those who take the big/lose shoes tip too far. Don't get them too big. I had been told you get blisters if your feet move arround to much in the shoes, espacially when you going down hill you really have to tighten them up. Don't get blisters out there!!

I have heard about one north pole expedition, they used plastic suits to protect their cloth from sweat to maintain it dry and warm.

Lovely video and very informative.
One thing to remember is one's own weight. If one is overweight you are far more likely to have problems with sweating and overheating no matter what layering system you use.
@Mike Smith Perhaps I was being too prescriptive. Inuit people do carry more body fat than most of us and of course with good reason, they've adapted.
This is not correct. Of course an overweight person will sweat more if he/she tries to keep pace with a very fit person, because the extra weight means extra work = more heat. But as Mike says, this is about managing your speed more than anything else. In arctic conditions you should work slower to avoid sweat. If you're overweight, just reduce your speed. Moving in snow burns a lot of calories, so no need to stress :)

If I was a phone toting millennial I would say that’s a fattist issue.
But while I’m chuckling away watching your blood pressure go through the roof I will agree that “unfit” is more the problem and that causes sweat management issues. There’s also a tolerance issue as well.
Anyway just popping down to the shops to get my life’s supplies.... It’s 8° here at present and very damp. I shall be layering appropriately for my 1 1/2 mile yomp. Then back to the delights of central heating.
When the world ends I’m off to Nepal. They can live through anything there and need none of our modern kit. Unless you count the knock off gore tex sold in Namche Bazaar that’s carried over the Himalayas from China.
Don’t put a call out for me unless I’m four hours overdue - I might have stopped off at Wetherspoons (none of that posh coffee shit for me) for a warm beer....

I've always worn larger boots as I'm next to the youngest with two older sisters whose boots were passed on to me every year. I learned from my mom to use a plastic bag to line them and hated it because I thought it was goofy; plus my feet are unusually warm on their own so it made them sweat puddles. Needless to say, I never carried on with it after I got older. But I do understand most people get cold feet.
This is helpful info and comprehensive; I appreciate your standing in the middle of the cold, wild forest, very vulnerable in your very cute skivvies to demonstrate :)) heehee

This guy is a pro. I totally confirm constant heavy cold wind as a nightmare and wind with 33*F rain living hell. Also been through a few winter boots he is 100% correct on oversize air gap to keep feet warm. Heed this man's words! Sincerely, North Dakota Oil Field
