    loved going to that mall when I was little. The fountain with the globe hanging over it. I couldn't wait to get pennies from my mom to throw in it. And it was really special around Christmas time all decorated up, and going to sit on Santa's lap at what looked like to me was a clam shell where he sat

      That Kmart building & the Glenwood shopping center that the original Kmart building is attached to
      has finally received approval to rehab that whole dump into a massive cannibus development.
      The current problem is now financing - (they lost their original money due to the length of time it took)

    I bought my wife's engagement from JC Penny there. Got a fantastic deal. Penny's was closing and nice lady pointed out the best ring for what I could afford. Got it even 30% for opening a JC Penny Credit Card. Closed it 3 months later after buying a couch on store closure. 10 year after purchase my wife asked me if I had the receipt still. I did. She was stunned how little I paid for it. The ring was unique because it was cross cut diamond. I guess it was rare. Considering I was your typical clueless 24 year old ring shopper it was a miracle. Curious we asked how much we could get at a jewelry shop and it was double what I paid for it. We are still married never sold or were really interested.

    Back in the 60s the mall had or let carnivals set up in the parking lot and around 66 ? a elephant died and they buried it on the east end of the property. It was always a treat to go to the Mall when we were kids..

    When our mall which is South Plains Mall which is same name when mall opened in the 70's was remodeled a few years ago they too got rid of the fountains as well especially the bigger fountain by one of the 2 Dillard's which people as I did threw pennies in for a wish, as the live plants & put in new tile floors throughout the mall added new fancier furniture as added charging ports by some of the furniture in corridors. Mall now looks more upscale & too fancy for me but our mall does look nice all in all.

    It closed in 2009. I think it actually closed on 9/11/09. I remember going to it just a few days after it closed. My nana wanted to go get something at the mall, but we saw some signs on the door, and she made me get out to read it, they'd said they'd closed the mall.

    I live here. What killed/is killing these malls is public transportation. Malls became public daycare centers for gangs of teenagers and detroit-pontiac city folk with nothing productive to do but hang out. I was harassed. People who can't afford their own transportation aren't going to spend much money at the mall. I live near the thriving Somerset mall... totally the opposite situation.

      David Hoover I live in Saginaw, our mall is slowly dying too. As is Bay Citya and Midland. My mom constantly tells me about how packed it used to be. It's sad because it's an important part of our cities.

      It's a few things. Yes, Amazon has to do with it. Great Lakes Crossing officially killed Summit Place. Pontiac took the recession hard but I guess the mall was doomed before that.
      All I can say about blaming Blacks is that you can look at all the major declining cities in Michigan and you'll find them. My wife's grandma (German) said she lived in Detroit and saw the decline when they moved in.

    • @whoasuckaa
      @whoasuckaa 6 років тому +1

      David Hoover Your argument that public transportation kills malls doesn’t take into account the many, many enclosed malls which are still going strong today with strong access to public transport. We have no dead malls anywhere in the metropolitan area where I live in the Northeast, and all the malls have strong transit connections. In fact, transit is one of the only things that has saved some of these malls. Many of our malls have light rail, bus and train connections, and they have only helped the malls to attract shoppers. So your theory is not supported by the facts when looking at sales-per-square-foot.
