  • Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant have the comic time of their lives in Howard Hawks’ wacky and endearing screwball comedy masterpiece BRINGING UP BABY (1938) based on the story by Hagar Wilde. With a supporting cast filled with some of the greatest comedic actors of the period, including Walter Catlett, Mae Robson, Fritz Feld and Charlie Ruggles, it’s the perfect way to beat the winter doldrums! I absolutely adore this movie. I first saw it on TCM while staying with my mom who was in hospital at the time and it offered me a much needed laugh and relief. The coat/dress tearing scene still makes me collapse in hysterics.

Well, millions did not. In fact, in 1938 it bombed so bad at the box office that no studio in Hollywood would hire her. Hepburn had to return to New York with her proverbial tail between her legs. but she bounced back, soon enough, as she always did.

I love this movie, though I heard that when it was released it was a bomb, and Hepburn was labeled as box office poison which is why she went to Broadway and did "Philadelphia Story" and being smart, bought the movie rights. And went back to Hollywood and made "Philadelphia Story" with Cary Grant. I also agree with you about Grant and Hepburn being a much better duo than Tracy and Hepburn.

Thank you for this, I love this film so much (up there with my other favourite comedy, The Lady Eve), that when I was a teenager, I used to imitate Katherine Hepburn's Susan and dream of becoming a Susan . As for Cary Grant, there are not enough superlatives in the English language.. Even when he is in close-up, you can feel he is acting with his whole body.

I always knew Katherine Hepburn was a great actress, but this is the only time that I found her to be absolutely adorable on screen. (And I'm as gay as a box of birds.) For me, this is her best performance - as it is so outside of her wheelhouse. Sure, Walter helped her. It is one thing to accept help and quite another to embrace it. One of the all-time great screen comedies that rewards repeat viewings with new discoveries every time. After discovering the leopard in the bathroom, Cary comes running out to Kate and exclaims "Susan you must get out of this apartment immediately !" She earnestly replies "But I can't - I have a lease." Everybody involved with this film was at the top of their game.

Dear Steve, You can't say enough about this gorgeous, timeless film and the way it is played, and I adore your impression of Katharine Hepburn talking through her teeth. You have to see Cary Grant in screwball comedies to realise what a brilliant actor he was, how sensational his timing was, and what perfect diction he had - no matter how quickly he says "intercostal clavicle" you can hear every word, and the dialogue in the film is screamingly funny. And I don't think Katharine Hepburn has ever looked so feminine (not a word I'd use of her normally) as she does in this. The fact that they're having fun shows, and I love the whole cast (including the dog)! Seeing Charles Ruggles imitating a leopard call, hearing Cary Grant's fiancee breaking off their engagement because he's not serious enough and is just a butterfly - you can't ask for more. I truly don't understand why it only became successful later, over time, and I totally agree that it's a far greater pleasure to watch Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant together than when she is paired with Spencer Tracy (talk about the iron hand in the iron glove!). Thank you for such a pleasure of a review. Best wishes, Alida

This movie is such fun and escapism that you can't help but fall in love with it and forget about whatever funk you were in. I always wondered if it was really Kate who was interacting with and touching the leopard, it would be just like her because she was so fearless and adventurous ( Cary's scenes seemed to have a sheet of glass between him and the leopard). And I too absolutely adore Charlie Ruggles, I don't think he really got enough recognition for his fine acting. I think the only really "normal" character in the film was Robson, although a bit eccentric. Anyway Happy Valentine's Day Steve 💘💌 and thank you.

I can't give you anything but love, baby! And that's the truth!! I've seen this maybe a dozen times over the years and it's always a laugh out loud.(especially the torn dress sequence). I see what you mean about Tracy and Hepburn, although I never thought about it before. Now, I love Spencer Tracy (altough I love Cary Grant more, for other reasons), and Tracy is great in his own way but yes, there is that. Hawks did the rat-a-tat-tat dialogue of His Girl Friday, and the Ball of Fire's Stanwyck, with its slew of great character actors and, my favorite, The Big Sleep with my alter-ego Bogart (when it's not being Stanwyck) and they are all on anybody's top, let's say, 100 film lists. It's interesting, how we all have our favorites. They get to be like family members , so many of them, from Coburn to the 2 Ethel's, Barrymore and Waters, and all the Dames and dames, and so many who you always enjoy being with, cozy and comfortable. Like an eternal spring. They bring out the best in us. And as I sang at the very beginning ~ I can't give you anything but love, baby. Thanks, Steve!

There were a few movies after Charade. They included a charming movie called Father Goose with Leslie Caron, and two more forgettable movies: That Touch of Mink with Doris Day and his last movie Walk, Don’t Run. The last scene of that movie has him being driven away in a car to go to the airport, and as the car turns a corner and disappears from sight, that’s the last moment that Cary Grant would be seen in a movie. It is said that they filmed it that way on purpose as his “goodbye” because it was known that he was retiring and this would be his last film.
