Please be kind to yourself. I am a 70-year-old widow with health issues, so I adapt these suggestions. Today I cleaned one drawer and spent 5 minutes in office drawer. That’s all I can handle and that’s okay!

Helped my Ex declutter almost 300 shirts/tshirts in FIFTEEN MINUTES(after washing and sorting into piles). Made a few promises to him first. The time limit. HE gets to choose what goes and what stays. THREE is NOT a hard and fast number, we could go higher based on how difficult it is to get thru the first pile. Empty moving box(wardrobe box) next to the door for the outgoing stuff. Sorted color piles of all tshirts, ex red, blue, green, white, etc. Your going to make at least THREE WAVES THRU EACH PILE, before moving to the next one.
FIRST WAVE: Start with the SMALLEST pile, toss stained or worn items.
SECOND WAVE: Toss any you will never wear.
THIRD WAVE: Keep your FAVE three from that pile, put them on hangers and either toss the rest of the pile or set it aside for an extra wave. Was it a hard choice? Keep ONE extra if you were stuck on choosing between two.
*Immediately hang the keepers up in the closet, as you go along.
Do the same with the next color pile. Did the same with his plaids, dress shirts, hoodies, and jeans/pants. We noticed he tended to purchase similar items, repeatedly because most of his clothing was packed away. Now he is VERY happy with all the clothing he kept and only added two extra shirts back because they were his fave color. By the time we got thru the third color pile of tshirts....he was having fun.
Because we hung up the keepers as we went along, his closet was color sorted when we finished. Not kidding when I say that he freakin LOVED it!!!!

Helpful tip for those with elderly parents and/or those with limited living space. When my mom downsized to assisted living she had limited space to put out all the decorative items that she had collected over the years. We were lucky in that she had a large closet-sized storage space available to her so I sorted all of her decorative items into separate totes, one for each season winter, spring, summer, and fall. The tote contained enough items to "redecorate" her little efficiency apartment each season and included door wreaths, knick-knacks, wall hangings, swags, etc. Once per season I'd retrieve a tote from the storage closet and trade out her current decorations for the "new season" decorations. She loved the feeling of having 'new' things to look at and this satisfied her sense of ownership of these items. She loved knowing that she could still touch these things at different times throughout the year and it sparked memories which provided her with stories to share about her life. My mom was a pretty-high maintenance chick and so she had a lot of things including clothes too. Eventually she let me do the same thing with her clothing - splitting it out into seasonally stored totes which allowed her to better utilize her limited closet and dresser space daily.

I have just met you on UA-cam today. I really like your tips and you have inspired me to declutter some surfaces in my bedroom and bathroom TODAY! The most discouraging thing for me is that I am a 73 year old widow and I cannot even keep my house decluttered and neat - living alone!
It is no one’s fault but my own. Feeling like a total failure. I have basically been “decluttering” since I lost my husband 5 years ago.

Hi. Hope you're well? First & foremost - you're not a failure. Losing someone is one of the hardest things you'll have to deal with in life - clutter is a long way down the list. One can watch videos on the topic till the cows come home (please excuse expression) but if you're not ready to do it - nothing will help. Having to re-adjust to living on your own is huge - your life as you knew it was changed completely. It's NOT clutter - in your case emotions play a big part in the process - if it's taking you 5 years to process things - then that's what it took. & throwing items out when one isn't in a right frame of mind can lead to regret later. Now is the right time to do it - you will get it done. Believe in you - GOOD LUCK ☘️👍

I have a very small kitchen. My cabinets hold food and spices my oven holds my pots and pans my oven draw holds baking pans and lids. My dishwasher holds my dishes ,bowls and glasswsre my food pantry holds canned goods on the sides i use push pins to hold spatulas large spoons laddies etc. i have a oval crock pot i keep on top of my refrigerator and a air fryer i have to keep on the counter. I really don't have room for anything. But i dont like cluttered counters. So i work with what i have. I wash and dry my dishes as i go. Would love to have the space most of you people are calling small.

The phrase that I felt like stuck out the most was "The Why" to give you the motivation. I have gone room by room, closet by closet, drawer by drawer for about 2 years now. I have had numerous obstacles that have slowed me down from beginning full time employment as a teacher, to a summer long of pneumonia, then was in a car accident then a few months later began having seizures. During my sick periods I have watched a lot of decluttering and organizing videos. I recently tackled the two messiest rooms in the house: my boys shared bedroom and the large office/craft room as I began to heal from the cluster seizures and medication adjustment. I was about to tackle my closet next then get back to work and I had more seizures this week, so had to up the meds again. I am not giving up, but needed more encouragement and motivation to get to and through my closet, so I watched your video. That why statement stuck out, so I wrote that down on a note card along with "clutter is just unmade decisions" something I heard in another video and taped them to my dresser near my closet. I'm going to get back at it as soon as I am able. Thank you for sharing video!

I have learned MORE in the past hour than in all.the books I bought to figure this out. We just spent 10 months renovating a gutted house, living with minimal belongings. The first month we washed dishes in a pail! When I got home, I felt overwhelmed by the STUFF I have...as I unpacked, I began purging what I had brought back.
    And then...
When I stopped for coffee, your channel came up!

Talking through items is very helpful. So often, we end up just keeping things if we can't easily decide and not making good progress. I like the questions/thought process you suggested using. This more detailed back story is something missing in most videos in this category. I think the "why" is so important to focus on, I think it takes away some of the attachments to our belongings- there's a bigger goal than our possessions. Thanks for a really excellent video!

Thank you for some great content. Two areas you touched on at the end are storing things under your bed and making your bed. I find storing things under the bed undesirable as they do get dusty and it's so much easier to just dry mop the floor. I don't want to have to dust containers under my bed!
The second thing is how long it takes to make your bed. I timed myself several years ago, and it does take less than 60 seconds. That is what convinced me to make it everyday. We also have a queen bed and I don't want a king because I'm pretty sure it would take longer!

This is so amazing. I love the idea of the expiration dates. That is the best sold by date, not that it is a must go date. It does not magically go from good to bad , PRANK on that date. As you said, use wisdom. If it is still sealed and not rusted it is probably fine! I have winter, spring, summer, Autumn, and Christmas decor. That is it!I rotate on the season date. Works for me . I love your idea and I will be sharing your channel! Love it! And yes Death Cleaning is perfect.. My kids won’t want most of my stuff. They have their own. From time to time I ask my kids, “is there any thing you can think of that I ought to put your name on it?”

Yes get rid and de-clutter.. At the end of my days and hopefully not for a long time yet my Family won't need to go through everything..
I'm still using my crown green bowls!! I go hiking regularly so maybe rucksack, waterproofs and boots etc will be the things my famy will have to deal with.. not extra pots and pans etc ha ha!!
    Thankyou xxx 😊❤

Gosh the most intimidating thing, the sheer amount of toys we buy for kids. My son was never so much into toys so I was lucky. Sometimes I feel for kids younger than 3-4 yrs the toys are for the parents not really for the kids.

I highly recommend using a loose version of the minimilists "packing party".
I haven’t done it with my whole house, but did with the kitchen when we renovated. Everything moved into another room, packed into boxes so the items would stay clean. Then we only pulled the items we needed as we needed them when we were putting the room back together.
I was able to condense the left over items after a week or so into fewer boxes, which we then stored for a few more months, just in case. Over those months maubea handful more items came out.
We had started improvising to avoid searching through the boxes, for example: using a large knife/kitchen scissors to cut a pizza instead of the pizza wheel.
I imagine this process could be done for eaxh area of your home until you've worked through each area.
We're currently renovating my daughters bedroom, her stuff is everywhere right now! Once we get her back in, it'll be just her bed and bedside table to start with. Then we'll add as she's needing it until we see what's left!
My favourite functional kitchen decor piece is my gluggle jug, we always have a water jug out on the table and I decided that was the piece I was going to find a "fun" piece to have out on the table instead of our regular glass jug!

Greetings. Hope you're well? On the subject of why you keep things & what happens to them when you pass - if you're single or have family is a consideration. Whats sentimental to you mightened be to someone else. If you have sentimental items that you can give to someone - great but after that things can't be sold or given to charity will end up in a skip. You've some good tip here. When i got a house one small thing I did was after buying cushions - i just bought different cushion covers which as you said can be changed for seasons or events & are easy to store.

CANNED GOODS: canned goods can last an incredibly long time with one exception: dented cans. You shouldn't exceed the sale date by very much; the cans are lined inside so plain steel can be used. A crease from a dent in the can results in the food product being In contact with bare metal. That's why the cans taste metallic.

At 9:11 about the garage sale or selling online is so true. I made $600 selling things I bought and hardly used, but I had boundaries with buyers. Hi, about expiration dates, what you say, it's true when it comes to organic, pure things like cocoa for baking, oatmeal, etc. However, if it's processed food like pancake mix, mashed potato mix, and other things like that. People shouldn't even buy them because they have so many unknown ingredients that even freshly bought is not good for our health. Anything processed, whether boxed or frozen. I recommend stear away from them as much as possible.

    • @tarynmaria_

Kitchen wise, I only keep a thing on the counter tops IF it is useful AND pretty at the same time. So coffeegrinder, no, use it twice a day but ugly, meaning visually distracting for me, so into the cupboard. Toaster, yes, don't use it everyday but regularly AND pretty, meaning the same colour as the whole kitchen theme, so it stays put. Same with coffee paper holder and breadbox, all in the same colour as kitchen and even waste bins.
