Hi Diane. Thank you so much for this. I had an ungodly anxiety attack earlier and couldn't sleep. Was so glad to see a new Diane video, got out of bed and did a tiny vase of flowers which is the first thing ive done in at least a week that i dont think will go directly to the bin. It's nowhere near as nice as yours but it's something. Its about 2 am here, so hopefully ill be able to sleep now.
Sorry to hear that you had a bad night. I hope things settled down for you. I honestly have found that since I started to paint every day (regardless of the quality of the painting) my panic attacks have stopped occurring unless there is a serious trigger, so I haven’t had one for ages now. One suggestion though, try doing small paintings in a little inexpensive sketchbook and KEEP them, there’s something healing about NOT throwing your work away. Just a suggestion. I have a book like this one: amzn.to/4bXjnSF
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thanks Dianne. I did 3 more quick and small ones today. I really enjoyed it. I used cheap old paper and it really wasn't all that bad. I guess it doesn't allow me to overthink and overwork the paintings which is part of what I tend to do wrong.
To support you Diane, I’m not running the vacuum ever again 😂! Feeling your discomfort as I have started getting arthritis in my right hand and it has made for interesting painting! Take care of yourself!
I got out my Kuratake monochrome paints last night to use today! I was so happy to see you review them, thank you for introducing me to Kuratake I love all their paints. I have 4 dogs whose main job is shedding, I have no carpeting because I hate to vacuum. I use my dust mop to sweep the floors of dog hair and dirt in a pile and suck it up with my vacuum hose. Works well and I don't have to shove a vacuum around it stays stationary.
Same here, dust mop then pick up blobs of whatever hubs tracks in the house on his feet he doesn't wipe off outside on the rug designed to wipe off feet!! With the lights low, dust does not show on furniture. More time to paint!
That’s a good idea Virginia. I have all hard flooring downstairs in the house, except a small area rug in the sitting room. Hubby vacuums the middle of these rooms (has a problem seeing into corners…) and picks up most of the dog hair. It’s a good idea to use a dust mop in the way you say, I hadn’t thought of that. I do have one, so I’ll swap to using that, and get him to do the vacuuming. It really has made my hand sore, and I can’t have that happening now can I!!!!
I love all the Kuratake paints. I like doing Japanese ink painting but find using the traditional ink blocks to be difficult and messy. These paints make it so much easier and enjoyable. Your paintings are beautiful!
Yes, I think so too. I have the ink blocks, but they are very time consuming aren’t they. Good for a meditation process but not very practical. I think these pans will help with the learning process.
Sweet flowers are so uplifting and the paint colors are pretty too. Thanks for giving me another reason not to clean as often lol! Love hearing your kitty and all your animals. Blessings
Oh, yes. Sumi e is wonderful. It’s the first thing I started painting, badly then not quite so badly and now not terrific but not bad at all. The Japanese do wonderful, graceful flowing things with a minimum of brush strokes. Their birds are my favorite..cranes, etc. anyway, I would love anything you might decide to do with it as is anything you do.
I can not believe you did this today. I just started learning about sumi e painting within the past 2 weeks. I ordered the Kuretake Sumi paints though there was not 10% off coupon on Amazon. Who cares? I am hoping you will be doing more Sumi work soon. Based upon watching your superb tutorials over the past 2 years I now own Kuretake 48 set, The Art Noveau set, the Starry set and now the Sumi set. YOU ARE THE KURETAKE QUEEN OF UA-cam!! All hail to the Queen!!
Thanks so much Carol, for the compliment !! Yes, I will be exploring the Sumi colors further in videos - I am a beginner in the art of Japanese painting though - never did it before as far as I can remember! We can learn together!
I’m in love with these sweet little flowerpots that you painted! They’re so perky and pretty. I think they may be one of my most favorite things you’ve done! 😻
Great ideas! Your eyes are just fine or at least mine agree with yours. When I saw you when you were ready to begin a little painting, you had the little paper on the much larger brown background and I thought that might be an attractive way to mat the little paintings! Yes, here the brushes are readily available in the art shops, they call them Chinese brushes, but they look like the one you’re using. They are very inexpensive and often goat hair. Some synthetic of course. You do a great job with that brush!Great! No more vacuums!! How about one of those robot ones? I don’t have one but I did send one to my son once when he was over the top stressed at work and that was the only thing that I could think of to help! ( He is in a huge house but not really by choice and doesn’t ever want that to happen again!) I agree, too much work and we’d much rather paint, wouldn’t we! Lovely color palette today! 💕
Thanks Donna for your lovely chatty message! That’s a good idea about mounting a tiny painting on a coloured background. Would show it up nicely. I wonder about the robot vacuum. I don’t know if it would be able to navigate its way around the studio, are they good at avoiding obstacles? I imagine the dog would go bonkers… try to kill it? Maybe he’d get used to it eventually! Certainly would be helpful. Hope things are better for your son, we are pretty limited when it comes to helping them aren’t we… Thanks for all your support, you’re such a loyal friend xxx Diane xxx

Thank you for a great tutorial Diane. Love the Kuratake paints. I just purchased them but haven't had a chance to use them yet. Soon and now I can't wait!
One thing I learned from a book the was very helpful when trying to draw bamboo was the angle of the joints (my word for those little notches that are spaced up and down the branch). You know like slightly curved up or down depending if you are eye level (which would be straight), below or above. I hope this is understandable…
Mother in-laws tongue. Everyone I mention that plant to; laughs. They think I’m silly and making it up. Nice to hear you know of it. Thanks for this tutorial and all you teach us. ❤
I love your bamboo❣️❣️. I’ve got khadi paper that small & I often do a background on them but I do need to practice floral/botanical. So I’ll start to do this as my warm up practicing this❣️❣️
Another lovely tutorial with such wonderful ideas. I have been watching your channel everyday and waiting for notifications of new videos. I love your style of teaching it feel like talking to a friend.
I have to tell you a funny story! My garden club had entries at the NM state fair. We were one entry short for the oriental division so someone had a flat white dish, I gathered discarded flowers from the garbage bins (we only use our best flowers & discard the rest) , I threw together an arrangement in 10 minutes. I had never done anything oriental & figured it would definitely not be a winner! Later we came for the judging & it was gone! I thought oh geez it was so bad they removed it! Well we walked over to the winners table & low & behold it won state Fair special award! Grand prize! 😂 what a shock! I believe this story has a moral. Always try! You just might be better than you think you are! We sadly judge ourselves too much sometimes! The discarded items put together made a beautiful first place 🏅!
I’m with you on mini paintings! Potentate…Chinese brand, pretty good, make small watercolour sketchbooks. I find them less intimidating. They’re great for practice. I’ve started using my watercolour pencils as you suggested and I’m enjoying the results.
The brushes look very much like silk painting brushes which I’ve used in the past, I don’t do it anymore as it takes too much room up in my kitchen and doesn’t bode well when the grandchildren come! I’ll have a go with my brushes I think. Thanks for the video it’s very good.
Hi Diane, I hope your hand is feeling better. I had a carpal tunnel operation 4weeks ago and it is healing, but a bit uncomfortable. Never mind, keep painting! I love painting in monochrome. I will give these little pictures a go. Thank you for your book recommendation for Majorie Blamey. I have been very lucky to get a copy of The Illustrated Flora… and Painting Flowers. Wonderful books, especially the Illustrated Flora. Thanks again.
Oh that’s great Liz, how lucky! They are great books. Thanks, my hand is more or less back to normal, despite having to wield the vacuum again today!!!
Wonderful, yes, good to warm up and try things out. Got so many things, paint, etc to try out but I feel I have to do something bigger just to get going and you don’t. Ha.
Beautiful video, thank you! The sumi colors look very similar to the derwent XXL blocks🙂 I used to have the same problem with a very expensive Dyson vacuumcleaner (it seemed so handy when advertised!) But I switched back to a regular one without a bag. Happy cleaning again (ahum….😬). 💖🍀
We managed to kill our big upright Dyson. It was the most powerful vacuum I’ve ever had, but eventually it failed. I have two of the small wall mounted battery Dysons, one in the studio and one in the laundry room, and they both need new batteries AGAIN. I have an upright Vax (that’s the one that hurt me) and two Miele cylinder types, plus a Henry and a James. And finally we have a battery powered Bosch. None of them makes me happy!!!!
Museum gift shops will often have small Sumi-e sets for sale. I have one around somewhere. A local art shop also carries the ink blocks. I have a few books and have watched several UA-cam videos. I found a cheaper ink set than the Kuratake set you have.
I have been using small pieces of paper for about 2 yrs now. It’s a good idea. I’m sure I’m not the first. I practice on student grade WC paper. When dry, I flip over and cut into 4’s. Usually a 4”x6” size. Then I cut in half again 2 of the 4”x6” pieces of paper. No matter the size of the paper, I cut into 4ths. I use the smallest pieces of paper for testing colors or swatching a small number of colors or checking brushstroke/s. Also, create small paintings. Many times, Im not happy with my paintings. I don’t toss it tho. In college, I had an art teacher that said even if you aren’t happy with your painting, there is always part of it that works! I took that to heart and look for part or parts of the painting that do work. I cut those parts out and save them. Which equals a lot of little happy paintings! The useless pieces of paper become my swatch paper.
Hi Deltamom, you do basically the same as I have always done. It’s true, almost every painting has lots of good things in it. In fact often it’s only one element that spoils it. Since I started having a pile of small pieces of paper to hand I feel much more liberated to try out new ideas. I should have done this years ago!
My 331 th. Filled with lots of ideas and commitments. Bravo! You show the vitality of a person in his twenties. If you were a rockstar you probably would be in the show of Tina turner. 😅😊wim
Dear Diane, interesting paints, they look good for monochrome painting I think. That yellow looks a little like the Winsor and newton watercolour green gold. I have a bamboo plant on the landing and I swear it grows overnight 😮it's nearly touching the ceiling 😂they do say it's a fast grower. Thanks for showing Diane , love the miniature paintings . I too love washi tape . Hope we get some nice weather soon ❤ Hate getting older at times dont you , all the aches and pains , I only have to do but of weeding now in the garden and next day my hands hurt 😂 XX
Hi Susan and thanks for your chatty message! Yes to the aches and pains, not happy about muscles objecting at the slightest effort! Bamboo on the landing? I didn’t know it would grow indoors, that sounds like fun, maybe I’ll look for one at the garden centre!
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thanks for replying Diane , just to say the bamboo I have originated from the single stems you can buy that you just keep in water and are relatively small but the one I have is about 10years old and still growing tall, and the upstairs landing has the highest ceiling 😂 Not sure what to do eventually might have to give him the chop 😮XX If I can I will send you a photo to your email XX
Lol, this reminds me of one of the first things I painted in watercolors. Strawberries! (from a photo) (lol, Doodlehog). I tried using different greens on the leaves, and it was horrible, just ungodly! It's actually what clued me into mixing and got me interested in pigments and 'mother color'. Obviously, I need to try again, maybe using the wet in wet. I love the layering you did on the pots.❤ 😊
Love your videos. Wish I had to turn “my heating on”. I’m in Florida northern Florida. Pensacola to be exact. Today was 96! Don’t know what that is in c. But really hot! 35.5 C. I asked Alex a.
Oh wow! I’m sorry about that, I know what you mean, having lived in hot countries too - and a couple of years ago we had a heatwave here where the temperature went up into the 90s so that was when we finally put in ac!!!
There are two Kuretake sets that have "graphite" colors with be very subtle beautiful colors. One set of 6 is about $16.00 (15.99?, what I currently have) and above is like yours about $20.00. Are they the same? Just wondering. Btw, I cut my big Watercolor Paper pads to "trading card" size. I used to "trade" Watercolor paints with others before CoVid Pandemic. I guess we should start again. 😉. Who's with me? As always, you're an inspiration Diane ❤❤❤
Hi and thanks for the comments, I’m not sure about the differences between those two sets… I wonder why the pandemic affected the trading cards - was that a general loss of interest or were you just too busy with other things for a while? It’s a nice idea, I know it used to be a big thing.
I was thinking about the yellow claim concerning my Kuretake graphite colors and it dawned on me that if you take yellow and add black, it makes green.
Your comment, when swatching, about the yellow looking green is because shades of yellow are like olive green or avocado green (kind of vague terms). People tend to interpret these colors as green, though they are shades of yellow.
Hi Karen, I should have been clearer I know. We are planning to offer lives for members on both Patreon and UA-cam. They’ll most likely be hosted on UA-cam but we’re not sure of the details yet.
I honestly don’t know. I do think there are a lot of Japanese living in England now and going to university there. It’s not a problem of course, just interesting x
I heard you say clairefontaine paper is good and works as nice as cotton, but is not cotton, but when i went to the he us amazon all the clairefontaine watercolor paper was 100%cotton. Are you using something besides watercolor paper? ( i kept watching and you clarified. )Thanks for the video im a new subscriber
Hi and welcome to the channel! Glad you got the info you wanted about the paper. Are you in the UK or in the States? It is a bit hard sometimes to get the Clairefontaine paper in the US (made in France) and at the moment I can‘t find the Etival (which is a cellulose paper but a very good one) but I‘m hoping they‘ll restock on Amazon at some point. The other kind of Clairefontaine paper is called “Fontaine“ and it is 100% cotton and that is available on Amazon. amzn.to/3x5i9pA They also do something called Paint On which is a mixed media paper which comes in lots of tints and that’s on amazon too. Here’s a link to the white one: amzn.to/3yAewIW Might be interesting for you to have a look at. I hope you enjoy more of our videos (we’ve got nearly 1000 of them!!) Happy painting! Diane x
Hi Amanda, It’s hard to say, we try to offer the same perks on both but I do feel that patreon is a lot easier to navigate than the UA-cam membership. Can you tell me what you hope to get out of the membership, then I can say more helpfully which is better?
Hi Diane..I have been looking for Lisa OBryan on you tube with out any luck..just wondering is this how you spell her name..thanks from a fellow aussie
Hi Rita, there seems to be confusion over the words. To me, in the world of painting, “permanent” means “non-fading” - some seem to think it means “non-lifting” or “staining” as we call colors (like Phthalo Blue) which can’t be removed once put on paper. I have paintings that my daughter did almost 40 years ago with a set of Faber Castel watercolor pencils and they have not faded, so I would say they are permanent. I need to do some research to find out what is actually put into coloured pencils. I thought it was coloured pigment and a binder of a waxy type which if it dissolved would give a watercolor pencil and if it didn’t, would be just a coloured pencil. I think Derwent’s InkTense are just very highly pigmented, but I’m waiting to hear from them with more information so I actually know the truth!!!! It’s a minefield out there!
A couple of months ago I bought a tin of Derwent Inktense pencils as they were advertised as water soluble, but waterproof when dry, like ink. They were water soluble and they remained water soluble even after being left to dry for a day or two, which completely ruined two pieces of work. No response from Derwent when I emailed them so I returned the pencils to amazon and got a refund. Disappointing to say the least.

Museum gift shops will often have small Sumi-e sets for sale. I have one around somewhere. A local art shop also carries the ink blocks. I have a few books and have watched several UA-cam videos. I found a cheaper ink set than the Kuratake set you have.
I just tidied up my office.
😅😊wim
Hi Wim, thanks so much for morning chuckle!! Oh if only I were a rockstar, who would I be? Hope you enjoyed this one! Take care. Xxx
Ah, I had one of those once but it died!!
Diane get him to massage your hand, then donate the vacuum cleaner to his care. 😂😂this is so lovely.
What a good idea!!! (Actually, I have already given him one of his own to keep in his bedroom!!!!!)
Glad you enjoyed it! Keep up the good work xxx
I have a set of sumi-e brushes I purchased when I was stationed in Okinawa in 1979. I cherish them!
That's awesome! I wonder if they are like my set?
@@DianeAntoneStudio similar, but your are much more ornate. Take care of them and they’ll last a lifetime! 😁
I have the sumi paint on my Wishlist
I can see many uses for this these!
They were $20& change before the discount here in USA
This is true lol!
Your comment, when swatching, about the yellow looking green is because shades of yellow are like olive green or avocado green (kind of vague terms). People tend to interpret these colors as green, though they are shades of yellow.
Beautiful Diane, Mother In Laws Tongue is supposed to be one of the best plants to have for air purifying in your home 😊
LOL!
Hi Diane, re the new Patreon only videos, are they going to be on UA-cam?
Hi Karen, I should have been clearer I know. We are planning to offer lives for members on both Patreon and UA-cam. They’ll most likely be hosted on UA-cam but we’re not sure of the details yet.
Oh good! For some reason I can’t download the Patreon app to my tv, and I love watching videos on a bigger screen!
No, it's not your vision. You are correct about the colors. 😊❤
🤗
I think it is because Japan has been fairly quiet these days ...so our interest heightens ?
Diane x
Is it better to join Patreon or UA-cam membership?
Hi Amanda, It’s hard to say, we try to offer the same perks on both but I do feel that patreon is a lot easier to navigate than the UA-cam membership. Can you tell me what you hope to get out of the membership, then I can say more helpfully which is better?
2:20 : Warming paper : 2 x 3 inches is 5,1 x 7,6 cm.
Yes, I misspoke, should have said 2 x 3 inches not 3 x 4 inches, silly me.
I 😅 your chickens.
Diane get him to massage your hand, then donate the vacuum cleaner to his care. 😂😂
Yes, I think that’s a great idea. He can have the heavy vacuum and I’ll get a nice new one for my birthday!
Hi Diane..I have been looking for Lisa OBryan on you tube with out any luck..just wondering is this how you spell her name..thanks from a fellow aussie
Here’s her link: www.youtube.com/@LeisaOBrienArtist. Hope that helps!
Those colours are similar to the graphite by them
Yes, but more intense blacks can be had with the Sumi paints.
🐨👍
Good thing you're not trying to keep a panda, huh!

❓❓ Are you related to Beatrix Potter? 😁 ❤️
I wish!
Ink like may mean permanent. Watercolor pencils not permanent.
An artist MUST protect her instrument. Vacuuming is contraindicated
I totally agree!
Sorry to hear that but at least they refunded you.

On reflection, it's probably God's way of telling me I have way tooo much arty stuff! 🤭
squirl hair
So are you stopping UA-cam altogether Diane? I don’t have the budget to sub unfortunately.
No, not stopping anything.
@@DianeAntoneStudio ok thank you.
Looks more like marijuana 😂
