In Korea, singers in the K-pop industry are called “Idols”. They are trained from a young age and are often considered more products than artists. BTS, who have always considered themselves artists (as they write and produce their own music), were called Idols derogatory.
This caused them conflict for a long time, especially RM and the rap line, but this song is a response and a declaration of acceptance. That's why it starts with “You can call me artist, You can call me idol”.
They also include many elements of Korean culture, such as the tiger and traditional sounds. With BTS, things are not what they seem, but much deeper. They have based their discography on literary works, such as the novel “Demian” by Hermann Hesse or “Jung's Map of the Soul".
They are simply amazing!

8:55 - 9:04 i just thought i’d clear this up 😭 so when you see the term “visual” for a certain member in a kpop group it actually has nothing to do with the visuals of music videos, designs, lyrics, etc the visual role is usually assigned to the member who fits the korean beauty standards the most or fans will consider that member the “best looking” out of the group ☺️☺️

This music video was "put everything in there" but specifically about all the negative things that people criticized them on, like too much hair color, crazy outfits, etc. so they just went extra petty on the music video
This music video includes a bunch of stuff they were criticized for. RM- for using filters when he goes live, so he uses them here. JIN- for having ugly knees, so his pants are cut showing them, SUGA- for being too pale, so he wears a Snow White sweater, J-Hope being too skinny and lanky, so he’s wearing a bugs bunny sweater dancing next to an inflatable stick figure, JIMIN- too feminine, so dances with a Korean traditional fan for females and V-dresses like a old man (just because he likes the “classic” style) so he wears a button-up shirt with suspenders and glasses. They were also criticized for their videos being too westernized and a lot of CG, so they crammed a bunch of CG and Korean culture (including parts of the choreography). There’s an explanation video for this to help you understand it more. Also, there is a live performance of this song. I’m glad you guys liked this video and fall deeper into the rabbit hole 😋💜🫰🏻

You said that the live performance must be something that rocks the stage, and it did... At the MAMA´s 2019 award the staff had to literally go under the stage when they were performing this song and held the stage with their hands and some iron bars so it woulnd´t collapse, because of their powerfull dance. Very dangerous for BTS and for the staff. BTS at the time didn´t know that was happening, only after the performance.
Those were two separate incidents. Bighit staff had to hold up the stage at a BTS concert during Idol. And BTS did shake the stage in 2019 MAMA also during idol.
They already break the stage in 2018 award show doing this performance , everything is shaking stage ,even other artists is sitting on chairs far they are also shaking they got scared there , BTS performance are always legendary 🔥💜👏

You guys definitely need to check out the explanation video for this one. This song is such a slap back after they were accused of being too Westernized and using too much CGI, hence the Korean elements and overuse of CGI. XD And they're so clever with their lyrics in ways that aren't even obvious on a first time watch. In plenty of their songs, their use of double meanings when playing with how things can be pronounced in other languages is pretty epic. I highly recommend the explanation video alongside their song "UGH", too.
And I don't know for sure on these because I definitely don't know as much as veteran Armys, but there are theories that there are many subtle "screw you/I love myself the way I am" references in the seemingly random nature of the aesthetics. Like RM getting accused of using too many filters, so him having filters on his face in his section, people saying V dresses like an old man so he wears suspenders, people saying Suga is too white so him wearing a Snow White shirt, J-Hope being called too lanky so him getting put by the inflatable wacky arm thing, people making fun of Jin's knees so him wearing pants with the knees cut out to show them off. I probably didn't catch them all, but I think that it is interesting and worth mentioning that BTS isn't so random even when they're throwing a bunch of stuff around. Awesome reaction, guys!

Idol was the first BTS song I've listened to /watched. It was through the AGT 2018. Then I listened to Fake Love, OMG ❤

Haters say they don't like BTS for everything that they can come up with. So, BTS deliberately threw all crazy visuals, colours, CGIs, hair colours, outfits and added all cultural references, to tell the haters to shut up, Yes they are IDOLs they are ARTISTS but they are themselves, they can do whatever they want/love to do and still be FIRE! It is also one of the most tiring choreo too.
You gotta watch a live stadium performance of BTS in Wembley with their medley songs of Dope, Baepsae, Fire and Idol. It was an absolutely amazing, mind-blowing concert! 😊

They slapped the fuck out of haters with this comeback, reply, and it's one of my favourite songs of them ever since I became ARMY from 2015.
Another ones where they slap the fuck out haters is their rap cyphers (cypher 1, 2, 3, 4) - give them a listen, and find the lyrics. The cyphers is some of their best work from the rap line, as well their song Ddaeng. Idk if you guys have checked them out, if you have, ignore the song suggestions - if you haven't, keep them in mind :)
