lol I think they meant the owl is Japanese because that specific owl lives in Japan in probably a zoo or wildlife center? Like how if someones parents are of one race but they have a in other country the kid is a citizen of the country it was born in.. Like I would call my dog american, but her breed comes from Germany? Hope that helped:)
Actually, the idea is to look like a tree. See how it turns it's back to the other owl? It's feathers on it's back are meant to be the same colour as the trees they like to sit in...it's actually hiding. The facial expressions are harsh and angular like a tree. They just also happen to scare the pants off of me.
Aw poor owl! He’s trying to look fierce then evil and all anyone can do is laugh at the poor little guy! At least Somme awes would be better because that’s what ends up being the case. Can you imagine a guy trying to look threatening and he just looks sweet no matter what he try’s?! Poor cute little 🦉
I feel like this is the kind of owl that people would confuse for the Mothman if it was much larger. The way it can make its body shift like that is... really unnerving.
I came here to watch a video about an owl. That's all I wanted. Then I look down in the comments and see a butt-load of racist people just hating on Japan. Yeah. Hating an entire group of people/a nation because they showed an African owl's camouflaging techniques and laughed at how cute it was. So please, before I see any more ignorant comments like that, PLEASE STOP, AND GO SPREAD YOUR RACIST IDEOLOGY ELSEWHERE. Thank you.
That is LITERALLY what happened. Against owls roughly its own size, it fluffs up to appear bigger as a scare tactic. Against owls too big for that to work, it instead contracts its feathers, extends its neck, and squints its eyes in order to blend in with the tree its perched on. Granted, there’s no tree here, but owls are instinctual creatures.
I volunteer at a center that does education programs with birds of prey. You might be surprised at just how much control birds have over their feathers. The first reaction you see is when the owl tries to make itself look bigger, which is called toe-dusting because the feathers on their chin almost touch their toes. The second reaction is the owl trying to hide from a perceived threat, and it tries to use it's camouflage to look like a branch (despite there not being one behind it, it has a brain the size of a nut, give it a break). These reactions aren't unique to this kind of owl, as many smaller owls will try to hide, and many larger ones will toe-dust, depending on whether they think they can intimidate the threatening animal. Do some research, these are amazing animals that demand a high degree of respect for nature!
The owl is actually called the Northern White-faced Owl. Located throughout most of Africa except the northern parts of Africa. Not found in Japan at all.
I know, although I did base my comment on images seen on google in which it shows where it lives and range can be found. So I wouldn't actually put too much into that part of my comment.
Geez, some of the comments here! Does anyone know what kind of owl the 3rd one is (the one that turned the Scops Owl into a wet cat)? He's beautimous!!!
(P.S. To all the presumptuous numbskulls in the comment section ASSUMING that the video (NOT THE TITLE, THE VIDEO ITSELF) is misidentifying an African owl as a Japanese owl: Do you think they displayed a closeup of South Africa and said "Africa" twice in the first 20 seconds of the video just for shits and giggles? They KNOW it's an African owl. They SAID it's an African owl. You haven't made yourselves look clever by pointing out an imaginary flaw in the video's facts. You've just made yourselves look like ignorant asses by assuming you know what the video's about rather than actually watching it for detail and LISTENING. That goes for you as well, dumbass who labeled this a Japanese owl *in the title!* )
+ShinKyuubi Because the owl they brought in was an elite owl. You know. The "Big Daddy" owl. That's why the African owl got scared and pretended it was old and gauntly because he was showing the big one he wasn't a threat.
Besides the common barn owl, the two owls featured in this clip have counterparts in North America, the great horned owl, and of course, the little screech owl.
Yes ok its a lil stress for teh owl ..but ive never seen any bird transforming his shape multiple times. Thats really cool footage of sumthing u normally cant just see when going thru a bird sanctuary. a very cool owl.
The owls aren't transforming; they're displaying their natural behavior. Make yourself look bigger to avoid predators. Make yourself look like a tree to avoid predators. Easy enough.
" Incredible!! Japanese!!! owl!!!!"
* is actually from south Africa
Balling Like Choji
it also should be called beast mode owl ..
lol I think they meant the owl is Japanese because that specific owl lives in Japan in probably a zoo or wildlife center? That second owl's look after it transforms sends something primal and terrifying to the core of my being.
That's the idea. :-)

Haha, Flutterowl would like to be a tree.

Wow, shut up dude. :D
zgrillo2004 You're just as much of a distasteful person as them. Get off your high chair.

Having it fluffy was one thing, but when it made a fox face, that set me off to the floor.
I feel like this is the kind of owl that people would confuse for the Mothman if it was much larger. The way it can make its body shift like that is... really unnerving.
That is too funny!! (lol) Love the Dracula stink-eye look

2. "Nope, nope, not here, just a twig, go away!"
+Nikhil Vetam omg groot means in dutch big XDD
I have no idea whats going on but that last thing the owl did was hilarious. Like his version of Blue Steel lol.
It's easy to see why people once believed in monsters and demons when we had things like this hopping around in the dark.
I love how the barn owl is just chillin' over there like: "Loser."
This owl is a literal Pokemon.
GATTA CATCH EM ALL
PRAISE ROWLET!
Do you have an extra pokeball? If you do then catch it!!!
Actually, it's a digimon! It goes back and forth between its forms!
thought it was a figurative pokemon
When he shrinks up he totally nails the crotchety old man face!
It's funny when the owl does the squinting eye thing, like Cleant Eastwood!LOL!.

Perfectly stated 👍
thank you, midnyte.
MidnyteMorgan FUCK YOU JAPAN
JONI RABO y
Jack Blackthorn I actually don't want to be a Japanese. I am. Nice try though buddy.
maybe it realize that that darth vader owl is too big to be mocked with larger-look body, so it mimic tree branch instead.
That is LITERALLY what happened.
Against owls roughly its own size, it fluffs up to appear bigger as a scare tactic.
Against owls too big for that to work, it instead contracts its feathers, extends its neck, and squints its eyes in order to blend in with the tree its perched on.

when it shrinks itself, it looks like a muppet. SO CUTE.
2:28
Owl: I am Dracula...
THOSE EYES...They stare into my soul
I'll bet this is where they get the ideas for Pokemon. LOL!
reminds me of my 1st grade teacher ... back in '64
that narrow face was everyone's reaction to the xbox one announcement
I was suddenly reminded of this wonderful critter thanks to the anime Sora no Woto. :D
I'm imagining it glaring and saying "My name is inigo montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."
the last transformation killed me xD
they said i could be anything
so i became a turkey
2:02 he looks like an angry grandpa xD xD
I've never seen such changing postures in an owl! His face completely changed in second one.
They named it Popo-chan I can't😂😭
MY GOD! that owl looked quiet angry i would say, like defensive. I would not wanna be near one of them or make one mad XD

Ok, I know it's supposed to be terrifying and all, but it's so freaking cute.
I want one! Gimme dat owl, puhleeze!!
I don't even speak Japanese and I can tell this is an African owl not a Japanese owl.
His eyes weren't slanty?
More to do with the fact that they say "Africa" in the video.
Romeo Cote
...And show a map of africa and mention "botswana" right before they cut to the owl.
Romeo Cote Well this owl goes full Gundam at 1:44
Romeo Cote He changes to a japanese owl from a african owl. Notice the eyes.
the owl goes ninja mode
It's Jim Carrey of Owls !
2:06
I need my glasses where are my glasses
The owl is actually called the Northern White-faced Owl. Located throughout most of Africa except the northern parts of Africa. Not found in Japan at all.
called the Northern White-faced Owl but it's not actually found in the North? lmao that's ironic!
I know, although I did base my comment on images seen on google in which it shows where it lives and range can be found. So I wouldn't actually put too much into that part of my comment.
Meeting Version 2 and 3 in the night, would make me piss on myself
Transforming owl, someone needs to overlay a transforming sound from the transformers when the Owl spreads its feathers.
AmericanPoliceState Autobots roll out XDD
And it's a Triple Changer at that!

'shape shifter' lmao
Geez, some of the comments here!
Does anyone know what kind of owl the 3rd one is (the one that turned the Scops Owl into a wet cat)? He's beautimous!!!
The title is rather misleading. The owl is south african, yet the title says that it's japanese.
will it live in japan so it Japanese owl now
It's probably Because the owl They have there lives in japan.
What Hoothoot is evolving. Congratulations Hoothoot evolved into Noctowl.

Those are some spooky eyes
They literally showed in the video that the owl is from Africa and the poster still thinks it's Japanese.
cuz obviously, japanese people only talk about things in japan....?
even if you can't understand japanese it is pretty easy to piece together this owl is not from Japan but Africa lol
They also show a clip of Africa which ppl are ignoring
They only do that when they're scared or pissed.
yes but they can also be trained in humane was to do that.
This African owl is badass af. When he turns skinny he looks like Park Myungsoo lmao 😂
I wanna know why the Star Wars Imperial March plays at one point..AKA the owl they bring in before the African one goes full on Dracula mode.
+ShinKyuubi Because the owl they brought in was an elite owl. You know. The "Big Daddy" owl. That's why the African owl got scared and pretended it was old and gauntly because he was showing the big one he wasn't a threat.
BanananaBatman
Ahh, thanks for that. I don't know much about Owls so I didn't know that, I'm more of a canine person even though I like all animals.
Besides the common barn owl, the two owls featured in this clip have counterparts in North America, the great horned owl, and of course, the little screech owl.
can you tell me pls, what kind the second (the largest) owl is?
Owls are beautiful animals whether in Japan or Africa or. . .wherever.
This isn't a defense mechanism. This owl is obviously doing impressions. First impression: American! Second Impression: Asian! :D
All i understood was popo-chan, hehehe
1:22 Imperial March
2:02 "I'm Bat-Owl!"
That's the first bird I've seen with built-in airbrakes
The narrator sounds like the one in Carole and Tuesday.
00:40 that face!

Whoa! Octomus Owl!!!
The trailer for the new Star Wars movie looks great
0:58 how lined him up with that haircut XD
did I just hear the imperial march song…
Just researched it. It's called the Southern White Faced Scops Owl. It's not Japanese. The poster needs to fix this. It's from South Africa.
The owls aren't transforming; they're displaying their natural behavior. Make yourself look bigger to avoid predators. Make yourself look like a tree to avoid predators. Easy enough.
Well, in the video they ARE saying it's from Africa. It's the person who posted the video who made the error of it's native habitat.
*this isn't even my final form*
