I go to Utah State University and it's been pretty good cost-wise. I saved a lot of money doing my first two years at a community college and paid that off then transferred. If you do AP Calculus in high school that will help you a ton, I wish I had done that but I'm not very math-smart. Getting a head start on plant ID wouldn't be a bad idea either. Getting a minor in fisheries, GIS, or statistics will help a lot as well. See if there is any undergraduate research you can help out with, get into wildlife clubs, and local wildlife societies you can volunteer with!
Hello! I love your videos and have been binging on them for the last few days! I have a weird question. I never really applied myself in high school because I was discouraged since I had no idea what I wanted to do. I never took AP classes or college credit classes. I’m now on my 2nd semester of my freshman year at a community college in Missouri. I was going in with an Associates of Arts but now I’ve decided I want to go to Colorado state and get a degree in wildlife biology. I feel like I’ve wasted a lot of my time and now I feel like I’m going to have to really struggle to catch up. What do you think? Just feeling a bit discouraged. Thank you for the educational videos!
Hey - second semester of freshman year was around when I decided to do ecology too!! I couldn't decide between premed and international studies my freshman year, i had no idea what I was doing either. It's totally possible and it's not even close to too late to transfer!! There are people in their 40s and 50s going back to school to study wildlife biology :)
Currently a finance freshmen finishing up my first year, not really seeing myself in the business world anymore but have always been very passionate about environmental sustainability. I would love a job where I can help businesses become more environmentally friendly but its a big jump to make. Scared to make the jump but I think I would enjoy the career more than any other field!
That’s definitely a career! Sustainability consultant or something like that. I’ve seen a lot of postings for those in bigger cities if you live near one or are willing to move I think it’s a realistic goal. Even helping out with sustainable building certifications (LEED etc) can be a good entry level option, I’ve definitely seen those jobs. You can also leave yourself a bit more generic to get a shot at both business and environmental jobs.
Sorry I should have been more clear. If you already have a lot of business related coursework, you could craft your resume to make it fit a business or finance job, or if you get more environmental related experience, you can make an “environmental” focused resume and apply to both types of jobs. So if you get some experience in environmental work and some in business or finance you may be able to apply to both types of jobs :) However if you don’t pick one fully, you may run into barriers with not having the right major for some jobs.

I am a junior in high school currently, and very interested in a college that actually only provides a degree in human ecology. The degree is more self directed, so I would select classes that are concentrated in biology, ecology, animal behavior, etc etc. I am worried that not having a specific degree in something like biology will put me at a disadvantage? The college puts emphasis on its field work based classes as it’s right near Acadia park, and they offer lots of internships, so that’s a huge plus for me. Would you say it would not hurt me to not have a more specific degree? Thank you so much again ❤️ lots of love from Maine
Sarah w // I think it would somewhat hurt you over someone who does have a more specific degree but if you emphasized on your resume that it was more of an ecology degree because of your courses then that could combat that. I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker if the college is a great fit otherwise. The way you present your degree on your resume can really help, along with your experience (volunteer work, internships etc) you will get during university
I plan on going to A&M Kingsville for Wildlife Management since they have a wildlife research center. I feel like I’d get an internship when I go there hopefully next year. But it’s three hours away from home. So I may go to Texas State since it’s a little closer, about an hour away. I couldn’t see much research opportunities about it though.
Would it be possible to move closer to A&M Kingsville if it looks like they have more research opportunities? Sometimes getting out of your area if possible can be a nice change. 3 hours isn't bad of a drive for visiting home on the weekends
Vegan Below Zero yes well my boyfriend and I plan on moving over there. He’s planning on getting a welding job at the ranch there. We’re going to go look at housing they offer during spring break. I just really hope it works out and I’m able to go to Kingsville.

Jimmy no it’s never too late! Surveyors make excellent biologists, that’s seriously good experience and you’ll go far in industry with a wildlife degree and surveyor background.

My dad said that calculus would help get into a college, but I would think the forestry and wildlife courses would be just as important.
Awesome! That sounds like some great experience! more than I had. sounds like your high school has a lot of cool opportunities. I personally did calculus, but I got a C- so it ended up hurting me rather than helping me...Calc wouldn't hurt, but I think if you're applying for a forestry/wildlife major those forestry classes would be even better to focus on. You will end up taking calculus in college anyways - most bio programs require it. Doing it in high school (AP calc) will just let you get a little bit further ahead now.

Nearby there aren’t many opportunities for specific wildlife experience, do you think some volunteering at a vet and zoo would be enough? Emily Bryant Emily Bryant with that experience you will find something - it may not be a “Wildlife biologist” title right at first but if you keep at it you’ll get there eventually! CSU has so many opportunities I wouldn’t worry too much about it as long as you put yourself out there and connect :) also I second TWS, they’re a great organization to get involved with

I have had horrible bosses that didn’t let me take time off, and then I’ve had bosses like with my current company where I’m taking 3.5 months off total this year. My family lives in another country so that balance is essential. I travel internationally around 4 times a year. Another option is doing seasonal work where you can take the entire winter season off to travel

Always wanted to be a zoologist, but being required to take Calculus makes me feel worried that I can't go into graduate school for zoology while being weak in calculus. I found reddit and other sites are really toxic about how it's a horrible career and no one should ever do it. realistically, the people who are actually working in this field are too busy nor do they go to those pages to post their success stories - instead it's the unemployed people who go there to rant so it makes it seem like it's impossible.

I’m from the uk and for my GCSE’s I’m choosing double award science,agriculture,geography,food and nutrition,German,English literature,English language,maths and half course religious studies. Would these be good choices to get into this career area?
I’m not super familiar with the UK system and your options but I would focus on science and math classes as those are the most important for getting into this career, then for the rest pick what interests you and will help you be a bit more well rounded - which it looks like that’s what you’ve done! Maybe you can also see if there’s a career counsellor or someone at your school more familiar with your school system who can take a look.
Gabrielle Dennis I think that sounds good to me! For comparison, I had two 3 month internships and a 15 month internship when I graduated and I felt like I had a decent amount, definitely the most out of anyone I knew. I think four varied summer student type internships would be great and better than 90% of other graduates

I'm not sure how schooling works in Nepal, but in North America ecology, wildlife biology, zoology, conservation biology degrees are pretty common. Take a look at the course schedule to see if it looks interesting. I also have a few major videos on my channel that go more into detail - you might not have "majors" there (idk) but they might be helpful
I am possibly getting an internship with the head naturalist at my local state park -- do you think that would look pretty good on a college application? (My first choice for college is Purdue, and I'm hoping that internship would make my application more ~flashy~, since they have a pretty choosey acceptance rate.)

I applied for a program under starbucks. It's at ASU online and I'm majoring in Geography BS but there are biology courses and ect. I just wanna make sure Im heading down the right path for wildlife biology. Idk if that's the right degree I should be getting. :/
It’s a tough sell to get a wildlife biology job with a geography degree. If you take a lot of bio courses and do wildlife internships then you have a shot. But if there’s an environmental science or ecology option I would do that, it would be much better. But if you get a free or low cost degree and this is the only way you can go to school do it - you’ll work it out in the end
Hard to say exactly when is best but I don't think any professor would fault you for showing your excitement about their research too early ;) Usually they love to talk about it and are excited to help out future biologists

I would recommend taking a science track in school. As far as what classes specifically you need, check what college you want to go to and see what their requirements are as it changes based on school. Your school councillor if you have one could help!

I had to take 3 calculus courses which were pretty tough. But I don’t really use too much beyond basic math in my job now. Some biologists do though, depending on your area of study

Thanks for the message! I speak Spanish too (somewhat poorly though...) so you can always write in Spanish :) So...I NEVER had to do any dissections in university. I would look into whether you can "opt out" for ethical reasons. I did have to do them in high school but I opted out. I recommended this to someone in Europe and she said there's no way to opt out so it varies by university - maybe reach out to the university or a biology professor and talk about how interested you are in the career and how you don't want the dissection part to stop you. There's nothing learned by physically doing the dissections anyway that are essential to being a wildlife biologist...shouldn't be required anywhere. Maybe there's an option to observe a lab group or watch a video instead.
How old are you? I'm from the Philippines and I am planning on studying a Environment/Wildlife degree in Canada. I have zero experience working with the environment. I'm 29 now, and will probably get a degree when I'm 33. I will be studying in the Yukon or Northwest Territories to increase my chances in landing a job once I graduate. What do you think are the chances of an 33 year old immigrant getting a career in Wildlife? Do you have colleagues that got their degree late?
I thought I already answered this one but I just saw I didn’t respond! I am 26 but I know many people who didn’t enter the field until their late 30s so don’t worry about that! Studying in the Yukon would be a great way to get access to all the wildlife jobs up there. I think your biggest setback will be a visa. I think it would be a tough sell for a company up there to sponsor you for a wildlife job since there are so many Canadians that are looking for wildlife jobs. Maybe a bit less if it’s a very isolated/not desirable position. But if you can manage to get a visa through alternate means (post grad visa, then apply for skilled residency, or spousal sponsorship) you will almost certainly be fine. As an immigrant here the biggest thing I ran into was that people wanted to see “canadian experience” and didn’t value experience from other countries (I think this is a bad practice and rooted in racism but that’s another story). So if you get the degree in the Yukon and get some internship experience there that should solve that hurdle. Stay in touch, this seems like a very interesting journey for you!
A good book to read for people who want to be future wildlifers is Becoming a Wildlife Professional It’s worth the read, they have tips on resumes and over 100 job descriptions in the wildlife field as well as the type of degree you need for that specific job and salary.

I’m not super familiar with the UK system and your options but I would focus on science and math classes as those are the most important for getting into this career, then for the rest pick what interests you and will help you be a bit more well rounded - which it looks like that’s what you’ve done! Maybe you can also see if there’s a career counsellor or someone at your school more familiar with your school system who can take a look.

Gabrielle Dennis I think that sounds good to me! For comparison, I had two 3 month internships and a 15 month internship when I graduated and I felt like I had a decent amount, definitely the most out of anyone I knew. I think four varied summer student type internships would be great and better than 90% of other graduates

Hello! I love your videos and I have been watching it for last few days. I basically want your suggestion. I am in grade 11 studying science(Biology) and have interest in wildlife biology. I'm from Nepal and don't quite know what field and course should I choose for my Bachelor's degree. Will you please give me some suggestions?
I'm not sure how schooling works in Nepal, but in North America ecology, wildlife biology, zoology, conservation biology degrees are pretty common. Take a look at the course schedule to see if it looks interesting. I also have a few major videos on my channel that go more into detail - you might not have "majors" there (idk) but they might be helpful

I am possibly getting an internship with the head naturalist at my local state park -- do you think that would look pretty good on a college application? (My first choice for college is Purdue, and I'm hoping that internship would make my application more ~flashy~, since they have a pretty choosey acceptance rate.)

I applied for a program under starbucks. It's at ASU online and I'm majoring in Geography BS but there are biology courses and ect. I just wanna make sure Im heading down the right path for wildlife biology. Idk if that's the right degree I should be getting. :/
It’s a tough sell to get a wildlife biology job with a geography degree. If you take a lot of bio courses and do wildlife internships then you have a shot. But if there’s an environmental science or ecology option I would do that, it would be much better. But if you get a free or low cost degree and this is the only way you can go to school do it - you’ll work it out in the end
How soon would you ask your Professors for those opportunities
Hard to say exactly when is best but I don't think any professor would fault you for showing your excitement about their research too early ;) Usually they love to talk about it and are excited to help out future biologists

I would recommend taking a science track in school. As far as what classes specifically you need, check what college you want to go to and see what their requirements are as it changes based on school. Your school councillor if you have one could help!

There’s a lot! Are you in the US? Montana state/university of Montana, Colorado state in Fort Collins, UC Davis, and Texas A&M have solid wildlife programs off the top of my head

I had to take 3 calculus courses which were pretty tough. But I don’t really use too much beyond basic math in my job now. Some biologists do though, depending on your area of study

But as I know here in Chile, you have to do animal experimentation in college. And i wouldn’t be able to do it because Im vegan since a long time ago. What is your experience as being vegan and studying or working with your career?

Thanks for the message! I speak Spanish too (somewhat poorly though...) so you can always write in Spanish :) So...I NEVER had to do any dissections in university. I would look into whether you can "opt out" for ethical reasons. I did have to do them in high school but I opted out. I recommended this to someone in Europe and she said there's no way to opt out so it varies by university - maybe reach out to the university or a biology professor and talk about how interested you are in the career and how you don't want the dissection part to stop you. There's nothing learned by physically doing the dissections anyway that are essential to being a wildlife biologist...shouldn't be required anywhere. Maybe there's an option to observe a lab group or watch a video instead.

How old are you? I'm from the Philippines and I am planning on studying a Environment/Wildlife degree in Canada. I have zero experience working with the environment. I'm 29 now, and will probably get a degree when I'm 33.
I will be studying in the Yukon or Northwest Territories to increase my chances in landing a job once I graduate.
What do you think are the chances of an 33 year old immigrant getting a career in Wildlife? Do you have colleagues that got their degree late?
I thought I already answered this one but I just saw I didn’t respond! I am 26 but I know many people who didn’t enter the field until their late 30s so don’t worry about that! Studying in the Yukon would be a great way to get access to all the wildlife jobs up there. I think your biggest setback will be a visa. I think it would be a tough sell for a company up there to sponsor you for a wildlife job since there are so many Canadians that are looking for wildlife jobs. Maybe a bit less if it’s a very isolated/not desirable position. But if you can manage to get a visa through alternate means (post grad visa, then apply for skilled residency, or spousal sponsorship) you will almost certainly be fine. As an immigrant here the biggest thing I ran into was that people wanted to see “canadian experience” and didn’t value experience from other countries (I think this is a bad practice and rooted in racism but that’s another story). So if you get the degree in the Yukon and get some internship experience there that should solve that hurdle. Stay in touch, this seems like a very interesting journey for you!
A good book to read for people who want to be future wildlifers is Becoming a Wildlife Professional
It’s worth the read, they have tips on resumes and over 100 job descriptions in the wildlife field as well as the type of degree you need for that specific job and salary.
