The little one had only one white, yellow, red input. I was wise enough to pick up the little one. I still had to convince my wife to let us keep it though. She was cool with it. It is now in my son's room connected to a Sega Genesis. He loves it. He is only five. This is the first time he was a tv like this. He likes the "curved" glass screen
The amazing resolution on crt tv is like going to the arcades, Even today most of the old retro games in arcades are still using crt tv. Modern led tv are great for modern games, but retro or even modern pixel games just looks better on old crt tv.
You're misinformed if you think a CRT doesn't have input lag (and so is the uploader). A CRT doesn't display a frame all at once, it takes a few milliseconds for a CRT to draw the lines from top to bottom. If you compare the lag it takes for a CRT to draw an entire frame and compare it to eg an LG CX oled there is hardly any difference.
Ive got a 32" trinitron 2002 model. Love everything about it but......it has some geometry issues with the left corner. Looks like the top side had a stroke. Idk how to fix it so I'll be looking for another
My top 5 reasons for CRTs. 5.)Sometimes 2D games have special effects that are only noticeable on CRTs. Some games use a layer that gives a different perspective for the viewer. Super Mario RPG has this in the in-game intro scene when the sword comes crashing down and the title of the game appears with moving stars. A similar effect is used in StarOcean the Second Story when walking through a forest early on in the game. You can see the multiple layers giving more depth that can’t be seen on newer displays. 4.)3D games look cleaner on CRTs. The Pixelated edges on 3D models become easier on the eyes since they blend into the scanlines and if you use composite then artifacts like dithering becomes far less noticeable than they would on modern displays. 3.)2D Art looks phenomenal on CRTs to the point that its very difficult to go back to anything newer. The scanlines and slight blur that CRTs use to display games blend with the look of low res pixelated edges that a lot of 2D art from the 90s has. They give the image and text a much cleaner look that has not been replicated closely until the PS1 Digital and RetroTink5X released in recent years with their Scanline options. And if you’re a fan of games that use Pre-rendered assets like Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Super Mario RPG. You’ll benefit the most from this. 2.)Light guns work the best on these TVs. A solid reason of its own to have a CRT around. 1.)N64 games are actually Visually Playable. We all know about the N64’s use of Blur and Anti Aliasing hurts the game’s image on Hi-Def displays but on CRTs it looks very minimal. I would even say that those UltraHDMI and N64Digital mods may not be necessary (Maybe the RGB Upgrade could be useful if you plan to use it on a CRT.) unless you plan to still use the system on Newer TVs.
Yeah, #4 is my biggest reason for wanting a CRT. Playing ratchet and clank(PS2) looks beautiful on my SD TV. It looks just like the HD collection version on an HD TV.
I walked down my street the other day and saw a 32" Trinitron mid 2000s era with a "Free Working" sign on it. I wanted to pick it up but I just don't have the space for something that big. I found a 22" Trinitron on a buy and sell website yesterday, going to pick it up tonight.
I picked up a a 1989 20 inch Sony Trinitron on the road. Hasn't mod it yet. I put NES Contra and turning the "Hue" knob, the colors were glorious. Also, booting up Sony Playstation logo on this TV is some experience I realize maybe lost forever had I not taken the homeless TV.
I just use a 36" RCA TV, with an 8 port composite selector for my NES, SNES, Genesis, top loader NES, PS1, N64, PS2 and Gamecube. While I understand that component video can make things look better, I really don't care about that. These old systems were all designed to output over composite video (with the exception of PS2 and GC, which had output options above composite), and I find everything looks perfect on my RCA. My biggest reason for having a CRT for my retro setup is no input lag. It makes a HUGE difference IMO. Great video, and great channel! Keep up the good work Retro Bird!
I found a curbside throwaway 31” Sanyo CRT from 2003 that works perfectly and is cosmetically great. I love these type of finds. People try to sell these for $100.
Years ago a hotel down the street threw out all their 32"Phillips Commercial CRTs I managed to grab one . These Commercial CRTs have a module port in the back making it easy to RGB mod .

When you lift a C.R.T., make sure you a firm grip on the bottom, and the glass should be embedded in your belly, as you lift. This is so that if it does tip, it just tips into you, and is not "going anywhere". ...Make sure your belt buckle does not scratch the screen.
Yeah, if you lift a CRT with the glass away from you... you could potentially pull off what I call a "teeter totter" where the glass end will just crash down as soon as you lift the other end up.
I paid $30 on Craigslist in early 2020 for my 1996 27" JVC CRT... I love it! Also got a small PVM (Professional Video Monitor) for $8 at an industrial surplus warehouse. 👍

I had a 13in Sony when I was in middle/high school early 90’s - kinda small but my TG16 looked absolutely gorgeous on it - wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of those nowadays! Great vid!!!

the main reason I play retrogames on a crt besides input lag is the way they look with true blacks and scanlines the way the developers intended to be.
For me it's mostly motion, and just in general the compatibility with old games and hardware which makes the gaming experience period-correct. To add on the motion part: Motion on a CRT is more precise (for lack of better word) with less soap opera effect. This is noticeable between the TVs, but I find the difference to be generally far more obvious between computer monitors. For game consoles and TVs, it's more of a period correct experience I'm seeking rather than for a videophilic purpose or for features that would give me a competitive edge. But I find that the older 20th century console games generally do look a lot more pleasant on CRT TVs. Sure, part of it is nostalgia and the unique experience in itself, but for the most part it does look better for any SD content in existence than using HDTVs which would require you to blow up a 480i picture to fit on a 1080p screen. I have DVDs of Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as many other 4:3 content DVDs and they do not look great on LED HDTVs. However they look spectacular on CRT SDTVs, it practically looks like it's made for CRT SDTVs and probably is.
A woman was giving a 32" CRT away for free. She was maybe 20 mins from me. I offered to take it off her hands. Got to her house and she says "this way" as she leads me to the TV...she then opens a door and I see it leads to a basement. Right away I thought "oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"....and its one of those narrow stairs down to a basement. She then proceeds to tell me her husband can NOT help because of his bad back, again I thought "oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"...i actually had to ROLL the tv up the stairs. Thank God a neighbor was out, he at least helped me carry it from upstairs to my truck. Got home and there was a purple spot in the corner. I never tested at their home so I don't know if it was always there or happened cuz of rolling a 32" CRT up stairs lol.

A Sony pvm-20S1WU is how I have all my stuff hooked up. The reason for this particular pvm was that it was in Widescreen for one, which was important for me because I wanted only one monitor that could do everything; play my retro games in 4:3 and also play my Wii U, Switch and watch my dvds and Blu-ray’s in 16:9. It was also a widescreen PVM that was relatively cheap compared to other Sony widescreen models; hundreds instead of thousands of dollars. Some people point to this model as being relatively weak because of its 300 TVL count, but everything still looks great to me, and 480i contents looks fantastic with no flicker like you might find on really high TVL count tvs and monitors.
I have quite a few CRT tv's around: two of them being enormous 36" monsters. You haven't fully experienced life (and a sore backside) until you've moved a few of those things around! I can offer this advise to anyone looking for anything 32" and above- make SURE you know where you want it, because once you finally get it there, it's probably going to sit and rot in that location... FOREVER!!! 😁
It's all about the nostalgic feeling, playing these games as well in CRT will bring back happy memories of childhood or early days of your gaming. if you gonna play retro games, Then use retro TV as well so it will feel natural.
I might add that the ideal playing method for Atari 2600 games requires a real old crt with round edges and blurry colours. Look at Yar´s Revenge for example: the massive multicoloured wall is meant to be blurry not sharp.
Scan lines are important for older games because a lot of the tricks devs had to use in order to make cool looking effects back then were created with scan lines in mind and when you remove them you lose the effects and get weird looking artifacts
Not to long ago I got a 13" CRT that was made in 2003 and its perfect for me. It only has a video and one audio input Buti have a composite splitter to solve that problem
I was given a CRT tv by my former brother in law. It is a 32 inch Toshiba. It has a super high resolution so every console comes in crystal clear. I actually prefer playing my old consoles through the composit hook up. I play my PS2 and xbox through component cables. I got to looking at the crazy thing one day and realized it has an HDMI connection for 720P. I have all of my Mini Consoles hooked up to that input. This tv also has pretty much a 0 input lag. It is the by far the most awesome TV I have ever played video games on.
Playing the older consoles through composite is actually a preference that many others share with you. Besides having a look similar to what you grew up with, it also implements what's called dithering in some ways that were originally intended (the most famous example being the waterfall in Sonic).
I love CRTs. I currently have 3. Lol. 1 Small one with Composite and Component. And then a good Mid Size one with Composite, S Video, and Component, and then a Giant Hog with several of each input. They are great!
Yes, you got it. I try to make the filmed footage look as clean as possible. I've also noticed certain color palettes seem to work better than others. For example, light blue doesn't get along well with my camera.

I pretty much play mine through my original hardware, Analogue hardware or RetroPie with scanlines turn on and connected to my HDTVs. I do have a 4:3 LCD 15" also for the original aspect gameplay. I do have a 27" CRT in my room also but don't really use it that often. Mostly use to play gameplay footage of an SD Card player attached to it if I'm having company over and want to show off my gameroom.
I have a N64 and decided to play on a modern Tv. So after lots of research I chose to buy the expansion pack, a Eon Super 64 which has the Slick Mode and a Mclassic and hook it all with a very good HDMI cable. So now I play my 24 years old N64 in Full HD without distortion or input lag. It was pricy to buy all these accessories but since I am playing lots and lots of games on my Everdrive it was surely worthy to me. But I still have my old CRT if I need it in the future.
I stopped using my HDTV for gaming after I got a Sony Trinitron for like 18 dollars and the difference is night and day. I'll make sure to futureproof the CRT so it can keep working for the next decades to come.
My CRT is a 20M2MDU Sony PVM, and I mostly use HD Retrovision Component Cables with systems that don't normally have them. Everything is connected to an automatic 8 input 2 output component switch box. One output goes to the CRT while the other goes to my OSSC and into a capture card. Addendum: Was it expensive? YES! But when it has two Component/RGB inputs, S-Video, and Conposite with support for both NTSC and PAL signals at both 50Hz and 60Hz you have an INCREDIBLY versatile, powerful retro monitor for everything Pre-6th Gen + PS2.
I tried using a small CRT for a corner in my room where I hooked up my older consoles. The problem was that it only had mono audio which had a lot of noise and the colors were washed out. The thing with CRT´s is that even if most people no longer want them so it´s easier to find them for cheap on the wild most of the ones out there need maintenance or were never all that good to begin with. So unless you´re willing to replace some capacitors on the mother board of an old CRT which might be out of the skill level of most people let alone dangerous it may not be a viable solution. I ended up using a small LCD from the mid 2000´s. The colors are nice, it has stereo sound and it doesn´t seem to have input lag, so I´d say it´s a nice alternative.
This is the reason that I keep in my basement two CRT TVs and two CRT PC Monitors. P.S.: Duck hunt?! What an awesome game! I've spend many hours on that when I was a kid.
I have two 21 inch Sony Trinitrons, a 14 inch Mastui from the late 90's, a brand new never been used 14 inch Ferguson in metallic light blue from 2008, and a 14 inch Sanyo from 1983. Some of them need some work doing on them. The one that I'm using right now for my standard definition gaming is the Matsui.
I got a “newer” 20” Sanyo CRT (Flatscreen) w/ one component input. I then use a component switch ton hook up my my GameCube, PS2 and have an open slot left. I love it 🤙🏽
Thank you for showing duck hunt on this set. I’m looking to grab a 24 inch version and I wasn’t sure if light gun games would be a problem. I hear that not all standard def flat screen CRTs handle them well.

back in 2007 I played my original Fat PS3 with a CRT-TV because HD TVs was too expensive lol.(Back then, I was in high school and with my part-time Job I saved enough money for a PS3, but not an HD TV)
As an european I use an old b&o mx7000 (one of the most popular crt's around here for retro gaming) since it has 2 rgb scart inputs and great image control from the service menu. Also has a great soundbar it is a b&o after all. Really happy with it found it on a fleemarket about 7 years ago and is one of my greatest find in the "wild".
A friend gave me a 27” Philips with a component input and an S-video input, and while for a while I didn’t do much with either of those inputs. But I recently decided to have the crt side by side with a 4K modern display. With the exception of my NES and N64, which will be on composite and S-video respectively, I want to have the rest of my consoles on either component or hdmi. My SNES looks unbelievable with HD Retrovision snes cables.
My 25" Philips started not wanted to power up sometimes. Really good tv. I luckily found a 25" JVC with component video on Craig's list for 25$ a few years ago. The lady claimed it was almost never used. It does look really clean. The remote looks new and she even had the user's manual. I will always try to have a CRT for my retro games. It just has the "right look" that can't be replicated with filters. The zero latency is also a big deal to me. When you've been playing certain games for years and years and lag is introduced it really sucks. I just can't do it.
I am 14 years old and my favorite games of all time are the country trilogy on snes I currently own 2 crts one is medium and one is huge I would use the huge one but it won’t stop popping
I still have my old 27inch "Entertainment Series" RCA TV that I bought in high school. I bought it in 2002, if I remember correctly. It still works beautifully! I also found a 30inch flat-glass CRT at a yard sale for $3! Haha Perfect picture! $10 for a programmable remote control and I'm in business!
Just bought a 20" Panasonic crt for $60 off Craigslist. Was immediately impressed by the picture quality when playing my n64 and ps1. My 60" tv made the picture fuzzy and stretched.
Gotta a Sony kv-32fv320 for $10 at a goodwill. Has 2 component inputs. Went with HD retrovision component cables all the way around for every console except NES and dreamcast.
A 27" CRT is the sweet spot for me. Large enough screen to not feel like it's too small to look at plus still light enough that I can move it around without extra help. Some of my consoles are hooked up with component while others are hooked up with s video. I actually prefer s video for some consoles over component because reds are sometimes way too strong. Makes characters faces look like they've got the strongest case of sunburn ever.
for me too.. I have a 34" Samsung to play 360 at "full HD" ,yeah it´s interlaced, but I dont like bad convergence in corners and also it´s too heavy.. its a paiin to make service to itHope soon I can get a good JVC or Toshiba for 240p games
27" is good for single player games, but I think it is too small for four player split-screen multiplayer, so I have to have a 36". It breaks my back every time that I have to move it, but it is worth it.
I actually use a Pioneer Elite SC-25 receiver to switch between my retro stuff hooked up with component and my modern stuff hooked up with HDMI. My TV is a Pioneer Kuro plasma TV and it makes everything look amazing! I use the receiver's upscaling and it looks fantastic
To connect retro games up to my TVs is simple. Atari 2600 straight into the aerial socket, anything else goes through my digital-analogue converter, which will turn composite into RF to be fed into a TV All of my TVs are pre 1980 (apart from one) so all of them have RF and RF only.
I use a crt tv for the wii, and a crt vga monitor for emulation up to n64. The crt vga monitor is running @120hz so it creates the 240p doublestrike effect.
I recently did RGB mods on a couple of consumer TVs (SCART input mod) for a friend of mine and ran a few systems through it (RGB modded Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, & Sony PS1). The difference is pretty significant - especially compared to composite. Everything is so much sharper, and colors look so much more natural. It's a shame RGB wasn't available in North American TVs during the time these consoles were being produced. I think it would have added so much more detail and depth to the gaming exoerience.
I’m new to the channel but have been loving watching all the videos I can. I just wanted to ask if you had to fix any geometry issues on the crt you have. I managed to get two free Sony trinitron tvs and both have some geometry issues
From my experience, no CRT is ever going to have perfect geometry just due to the nature of the technology. The overscan is the biggest thing that I've had luck fixing. Also, glad to have you on the channel!
@@RetroBirdGaming Yours looks pretty good from what I can see. The 27 inch I have doesn’t have too bad of an issue and I can play in s video and still have a good time. How do you film the crt without seeing the screen refresh? I am going to do a UA-cam video in the next few weeks. I am going to compare my jvc iart vs sony wega vs pvm20m2mdu vs bvm1911. Any other advice you have about how to record would be appreciated. I am a noob when it comes to making videos.
You need to have the refresh rate of your camera synced up. A lot of it will come down to your camera and it's settings. Play around with it until you get something that looks how you want it to. Most people just live with whatever results they get on the first try, so it helps to allow yourself some time to tinker around with adjustments.
I have a 20 inch Samsung crt with component that I use to play my Sega Saturn and other retro games from my raspberry pi 3b. It’s not the biggest or best but the games look great to my eyes ☺️

Would be cool to see companies make new CRTs again at some scale if only to work with the games of yesteryear. I'm happy I saw this switch coming so picked up a bunch of B&O MX7- and 8000s when they were commonplace (even got one for free). Sadly don't have a Trinitron though but yeah... 4x MX series, a small TV I picked up off the street and my old Grundig should hopefully last me through my lifetime at least.
i have 6 sony trinitron crt tvs and i use only 4 of them , 3 in my apartment , 1 in my father house to play with the family , the other 2 in my father house too in a blocked room , is this normal ? there's two Panasonic crt too in the same blocked room ,still in the box sealed ,,,,😅 sometime when i see them i feel happy 😁, and sometimes i feel,,,,, what i have done !🙄 please i need help 😥
Scanlines on even halfway decent crts aren't even that noticeable unless you're sitting way too close. I don't see why people obsess over them so much. I personally can't stand how it's been implemented on modern screens either. It's never been so obvious.
Even I would admit that I probably obsess over them more than I need to. But hey, it's what I'm into. If you have a larger CRT, the scanlines (or technically the "blank lines") are a lot easier to see without getting close. But then you're dealing with an even larger CRT and CRTs are already large to begin with :)
psx saturn , In Samsung TVs, if you lower the contrast enough, you raise the brightness somewhat to compensate for the decrease in contrast and lower the definition to the top, the pixels and saw teeth disappear;)
Great video! Although technically the scan lines are the colored lines being drawn or scanned, not the black ones. Scan lines also appear in 480i content, they just alternate to create a higher resolution.
Low lag (4ms) OLEDs have become available these day though, and when combined with a good scaler, it looks just as good or better than a consumer CRT (PVMs will always look the best). OLEDs have greatly closed the gap on the black levels, and almost never have dead pixels. The only CRT I would ever get is a PVM, normal CRTs compared to them are blown out of the water.
What transcoder do you use?.. I need a vga (dsub-15) to component (ypbpr) transcoder. I just can't find one lol. Those things are hard to come by these days! 🤷🏼♂️
I actually prefer composite for Saturn games because the dithering actually looks like transparency! No it's not as crisp, but it looks good with games like Nights into Dreams. S-Video or better reveals the checkerboard dithering and it no longer appears transparent.
I saw a Sony widescreen crt missing it’s rear shell parked on the side of the street the other day. The back end of the tube was smashed off really brutally and I took a solid minute to pay my respects. What a cruel world.
I used my daughter toy wagon to pushed the heavingly ass tv across the room. I didn't have anyone helping me lifting it up and so I have to hold up by myself and push it up on the tv stand. I'm getting too old to do this. I'm in my mid 40s. Probably never again. Make sure to be precise and plan where to put it permanently.
I've became a hoarder of these CRT TVs I find them in great condition for free i just cant bring myself not to take them i have all sorts sizes even ones with vhs players built in dvd players or both🤪🤑🤣😂🤘🏽💯
Gosh I'm wanting a nice crt. I wonder if the Retron 5 lag would be gone if played on a crt? A person would need a hdmi to composite converter or something.
That's a tough one. I have never used a Retron before and so I don't know for sure. Didn't Retrons used to have like S-Video and other analog signals like that?

If a CRT has S-Video or Composite, most consoles have cables you can find to support those inputs. Even for component, most older consoles now have specialty component cables (can be expensive though).

Deep blacks, amazing motion handling, non existent input lag. AND lots of good exercise and deadlifting practice

Ive got a 32" trinitron 2002 model. Love everything about it but......it has some geometry issues with the left corner. Looks like the top side had a stroke. Idk how to fix it so I'll be looking for another
My top 5 reasons for CRTs.
5.)Sometimes 2D games have special effects that are only noticeable on CRTs. Some games use a layer that gives a different perspective for the viewer.
Super Mario RPG has this in the in-game intro scene when the sword comes crashing down and the title of the game appears with moving stars.
A similar effect is used in StarOcean the Second Story when walking through a forest early on in the game. You can see the multiple layers giving more depth that can’t be seen on newer displays.
4.)3D games look cleaner on CRTs. The Pixelated edges on 3D models become easier on the eyes since they blend into the scanlines and if you use composite then artifacts like dithering becomes far less noticeable than they would on modern displays.
3.)2D Art looks phenomenal on CRTs to the point that its very difficult to go back to anything newer. The scanlines and slight blur that CRTs use to display games blend with the look of low res pixelated edges that a lot of 2D art from the 90s has. They give the image and text a much cleaner look that has not been replicated closely until the PS1 Digital and RetroTink5X released in recent years with their Scanline options.
And if you’re a fan of games that use Pre-rendered assets like Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Super Mario RPG. You’ll benefit the most from this.
2.)Light guns work the best on these TVs. A solid reason of its own to have a CRT around.
1.)N64 games are actually Visually Playable. We all know about the N64’s use of Blur and Anti Aliasing hurts the game’s image on Hi-Def displays but on CRTs it looks very minimal. I would even say that those UltraHDMI and N64Digital mods may not be necessary (Maybe the RGB Upgrade could be useful if you plan to use it on a CRT.) unless you plan to still use the system on Newer TVs.
Yeah, #4 is my biggest reason for wanting a CRT. Playing ratchet and clank(PS2) looks beautiful on my SD TV. It looks just like the HD collection version on an HD TV.
I walked down my street the other day and saw a 32" Trinitron mid 2000s era with a "Free Working" sign on it. I wanted to pick it up but I just don't have the space for something that big. I found a 22" Trinitron on a buy and sell website yesterday, going to pick it up tonight.
I picked up a a 1989 20 inch Sony Trinitron on the road. Hasn't mod it yet. I put NES Contra and turning the "Hue" knob, the colors were glorious. Also, booting up Sony Playstation logo on this TV is some experience I realize maybe lost forever had I not taken the homeless TV.

I just use a 36" RCA TV, with an 8 port composite selector for my NES, SNES, Genesis, top loader NES, PS1, N64, PS2 and Gamecube.
While I understand that component video can make things look better, I really don't care about that. These old systems were all designed to output over composite video (with the exception of PS2 and GC, which had output options above composite), and I find everything looks perfect on my RCA. My biggest reason for having a CRT for my retro setup is no input lag. It makes a HUGE difference IMO. Great video, and great channel! Keep up the good work Retro Bird!
I found a curbside throwaway 31” Sanyo CRT from 2003 that works perfectly and is cosmetically great. I love these type of finds. People try to sell these for $100.
Years ago a hotel down the street threw out all their 32"Phillips Commercial CRTs I managed to grab one . These Commercial CRTs have a module port in the back making it easy to RGB mod .

When you lift a C.R.T., make sure you a firm grip on the bottom, and the glass should be embedded in your belly, as you lift. This is so that if it does tip, it just tips into you, and is not "going anywhere". ...Make sure your belt buckle does not scratch the screen.
Yeah, if you lift a CRT with the glass away from you... you could potentially pull off what I call a "teeter totter" where the glass end will just crash down as soon as you lift the other end up.
I paid $30 on Craigslist in early 2020 for my 1996 27" JVC CRT... I love it!
Also got a small PVM (Professional Video Monitor) for $8 at an industrial surplus warehouse. 👍

I had a 13in Sony when I was in middle/high school early 90’s - kinda small but my TG16 looked absolutely gorgeous on it - wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of those nowadays! Great vid!!!
A 13" TV wasn't that unusual for a young teenager in those days. Thing was probably awesome to have.

the main reason I play retrogames on a crt besides input lag is the way they look with true blacks and scanlines the way the developers intended to be.
Those true blacks really do look great.
For me it's mostly motion, and just in general the compatibility with old games and hardware which makes the gaming experience period-correct.
To add on the motion part: Motion on a CRT is more precise (for lack of better word) with less soap opera effect. This is noticeable between the TVs, but I find the difference to be generally far more obvious between computer monitors.
For game consoles and TVs, it's more of a period correct experience I'm seeking rather than for a videophilic purpose or for features that would give me a competitive edge. But I find that the older 20th century console games generally do look a lot more pleasant on CRT TVs. Sure, part of it is nostalgia and the unique experience in itself, but for the most part it does look better for any SD content in existence than using HDTVs which would require you to blow up a 480i picture to fit on a 1080p screen. I have DVDs of Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as many other 4:3 content DVDs and they do not look great on LED HDTVs. However they look spectacular on CRT SDTVs, it practically looks like it's made for CRT SDTVs and probably is.

A woman was giving a 32" CRT away for free. She was maybe 20 mins from me. I offered to take it off her hands. Got to her house and she says "this way" as she leads me to the TV...she then opens a door and I see it leads to a basement. Right away I thought "oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"....and its one of those narrow stairs down to a basement. She then proceeds to tell me her husband can NOT help because of his bad back, again I thought "oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"...i actually had to ROLL the tv up the stairs. Thank God a neighbor was out, he at least helped me carry it from upstairs to my truck. Got home and there was a purple spot in the corner. I never tested at their home so I don't know if it was always there or happened cuz of rolling a 32" CRT up stairs lol.

A Sony pvm-20S1WU is how I have all my stuff hooked up. The reason for this particular pvm was that it was in Widescreen for one, which was important for me because I wanted only one monitor that could do everything; play my retro games in 4:3 and also play my Wii U, Switch and watch my dvds and Blu-ray’s in 16:9. It was also a widescreen PVM that was relatively cheap compared to other Sony widescreen models; hundreds instead of thousands of dollars. Some people point to this model as being relatively weak because of its 300 TVL count, but everything still looks great to me, and 480i contents looks fantastic with no flicker like you might find on really high TVL count tvs and monitors.
I have quite a few CRT tv's around: two of them being enormous 36" monsters. You haven't fully experienced life (and a sore backside) until you've moved a few of those things around! I can offer this advise to anyone looking for anything 32" and above- make SURE you know where you want it, because once you finally get it there, it's probably going to sit and rot in that location... FOREVER!!! 😁
My dad has this 40+ inch computer monitor from the 80s we used to watch tv on and nes had many great memories on it. We still have it to my surprise.

It's all about the nostalgic feeling, playing these games as well in CRT will bring back happy memories of childhood or early days of your gaming. if you gonna play retro games, Then use retro TV as well so it will feel natural.
For me since I’m a kid, it’s more of how it looks better considering I don’t remember using a CRT a lot growing up since I was little.

I might add that the ideal playing method for Atari 2600 games requires a real old crt with round edges and blurry colours. Look at Yar´s Revenge for example: the massive multicoloured wall is meant to be blurry not sharp.
Scan lines are important for older games because a lot of the tricks devs had to use in order to make cool looking effects back then were created with scan lines in mind and when you remove them you lose the effects and get weird looking artifacts
Not to long ago I got a 13" CRT that was made in 2003 and its perfect for me. It only has a video and one audio input Buti have a composite splitter to solve that problem
I was given a CRT tv by my former brother in law. It is a 32 inch Toshiba. It has a super high resolution so every console comes in crystal clear. I actually prefer playing my old consoles through the composit hook up. I play my PS2 and xbox through component cables. I got to looking at the crazy thing one day and realized it has an HDMI connection for 720P. I have all of my Mini Consoles hooked up to that input. This tv also has pretty much a 0 input lag. It is the by far the most awesome TV I have ever played video games on.
Playing the older consoles through composite is actually a preference that many others share with you. Besides having a look similar to what you grew up with, it also implements what's called dithering in some ways that were originally intended (the most famous example being the waterfall in Sonic).
I love CRTs. I currently have 3. Lol. 1 Small one with Composite and Component. And then a good Mid Size one with Composite, S Video, and Component, and then a Giant Hog with several of each input. They are great!

Yes, you got it. I try to make the filmed footage look as clean as possible. I've also noticed certain color palettes seem to work better than others. For example, light blue doesn't get along well with my camera.

I pretty much play mine through my original hardware, Analogue hardware or RetroPie with scanlines turn on and connected to my HDTVs. I do have a 4:3 LCD 15" also for the original aspect gameplay. I do have a 27" CRT in my room also but don't really use it that often. Mostly use to play gameplay footage of an SD Card player attached to it if I'm having company over and want to show off my gameroom.
Nice. That's very similar to the equipment I use. RetroPie comes in really handy for emulating arcade games that were never ported to anything.

I have a N64 and decided to play on a modern Tv. So after lots of research I chose to buy the expansion pack, a Eon Super 64 which has the Slick Mode and a Mclassic and hook it all with a very good HDMI cable. So now I play my 24 years old N64 in Full HD without distortion or input lag. It was pricy to buy all these accessories but since I am playing lots and lots of games on my Everdrive it was surely worthy to me. But I still have my old CRT if I need it in the future.
The key is that you're happy with the setup. Glad it worked out for you.
I stopped using my HDTV for gaming after I got a Sony Trinitron for like 18 dollars and the difference is night and day. I'll make sure to futureproof the CRT so it can keep working for the next decades to come.
Yeah, I think if we take care of our CRTs they can definitely last for a long long time.

My CRT is a 20M2MDU Sony PVM, and I mostly use HD Retrovision Component Cables with systems that don't normally have them. Everything is connected to an automatic 8 input 2 output component switch box. One output goes to the CRT while the other goes to my OSSC and into a capture card.
Addendum: Was it expensive? YES! But when it has two Component/RGB inputs, S-Video, and Conposite with support for both NTSC and PAL signals at both 50Hz and 60Hz you have an INCREDIBLY versatile, powerful retro monitor for everything Pre-6th Gen + PS2.
I tried using a small CRT for a corner in my room where I hooked up my older consoles.
The problem was that it only had mono audio which had a lot of noise and the colors were washed out.
The thing with CRT´s is that even if most people no longer want them so it´s easier to find them for cheap on the wild most of the ones out there need maintenance or were never all that good to begin with.
So unless you´re willing to replace some capacitors on the mother board of an old CRT which might be out of the skill level of most people let alone dangerous it may not be a viable solution.
I ended up using a small LCD from the mid 2000´s.
The colors are nice, it has stereo sound and it doesn´t seem to have input lag, so I´d say it´s a nice alternative.
This is the reason that I keep in my basement two CRT TVs and two CRT PC Monitors.
P.S.: Duck hunt?! What an awesome game! I've spend many hours on that when I was a kid.
I have two 21 inch Sony Trinitrons, a 14 inch Mastui from the late 90's, a brand new never been used 14 inch Ferguson in metallic light blue from 2008, and a 14 inch Sanyo from 1983.
Some of them need some work doing on them. The one that I'm using right now for my standard definition gaming is the Matsui.
I got a “newer” 20” Sanyo CRT (Flatscreen) w/ one component input. I then use a component switch ton hook up my my GameCube, PS2 and have an open slot left. I love it 🤙🏽
Thank you for showing duck hunt on this set. I’m looking to grab a 24 inch version and I wasn’t sure if light gun games would be a problem. I hear that not all standard def flat screen CRTs handle them well.

back in 2007 I played my original Fat PS3 with a CRT-TV because HD TVs was too expensive lol.(Back then, I was in high school and with my part-time Job I saved enough money for a PS3, but not an HD TV)
As an european I use an old b&o mx7000 (one of the most popular crt's around here for retro gaming) since it has 2 rgb scart inputs and great image control from the service menu. Also has a great soundbar it is a b&o after all. Really happy with it found it on a fleemarket about 7 years ago and is one of my greatest find in the "wild".
A friend gave me a 27” Philips with a component input and an S-video input, and while for a while I didn’t do much with either of those inputs. But I recently decided to have the crt side by side with a 4K modern display. With the exception of my NES and N64, which will be on composite and S-video respectively, I want to have the rest of my consoles on either component or hdmi. My SNES looks unbelievable with HD Retrovision snes cables.
My 25" Philips started not wanted to power up sometimes. Really good tv. I luckily found a 25" JVC with component video on Craig's list for 25$ a few years ago. The lady claimed it was almost never used. It does look really clean. The remote looks new and she even had the user's manual. I will always try to have a CRT for my retro games. It just has the "right look" that can't be replicated with filters. The zero latency is also a big deal to me. When you've been playing certain games for years and years and lag is introduced it really sucks. I just can't do it.

Just bought a 20" Panasonic crt for $60 off Craigslist. Was immediately impressed by the picture quality when playing my n64 and ps1. My 60" tv made the picture fuzzy and stretched.
Gotta a Sony kv-32fv320 for $10 at a goodwill. Has 2 component inputs. Went with HD retrovision component cables all the way around for every console except NES and dreamcast.

A 27" CRT is the sweet spot for me. Large enough screen to not feel like it's too small to look at plus still light enough that I can move it around without extra help. Some of my consoles are hooked up with component while others are hooked up with s video. I actually prefer s video for some consoles over component because reds are sometimes way too strong. Makes characters faces look like they've got the strongest case of sunburn ever.
27" is the sweet spot for me too, and for practically the exact same reasons!
for me too.. I have a 34" Samsung to play 360 at "full HD" ,yeah it´s interlaced, but I dont like bad convergence in corners and also it´s too heavy.. its a paiin to make service to itHope soon I can get a good JVC or Toshiba for 240p games
27" is good for single player games, but I think it is too small for four player split-screen multiplayer, so I have to have a 36". It breaks my back every time that I have to move it, but it is worth it.
I actually use a Pioneer Elite SC-25 receiver to switch between my retro stuff hooked up with component and my modern stuff hooked up with HDMI. My TV is a Pioneer Kuro plasma TV and it makes everything look amazing! I use the receiver's upscaling and it looks fantastic

To connect retro games up to my TVs is simple.
Atari 2600 straight into the aerial socket, anything else goes through my digital-analogue converter, which will turn composite into RF to be fed into a TV
All of my TVs are pre 1980 (apart from one) so all of them have RF and RF only.

I use a crt tv for the wii, and a crt vga monitor for emulation up to n64. The crt vga monitor is running @120hz so it creates the 240p doublestrike effect.

I recently did RGB mods on a couple of consumer TVs (SCART input mod) for a friend of mine and ran a few systems through it (RGB modded Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, & Sony PS1). The difference is pretty significant - especially compared to composite. Everything is so much sharper, and colors look so much more natural. It's a shame RGB wasn't available in North American TVs during the time these consoles were being produced. I think it would have added so much more detail and depth to the gaming exoerience.

From my experience, no CRT is ever going to have perfect geometry just due to the nature of the technology. The overscan is the biggest thing that I've had luck fixing. Also, glad to have you on the channel!

How do you film the crt without seeing the screen refresh? I am going to do a UA-cam video in the next few weeks. I am going to compare my jvc iart vs sony wega vs pvm20m2mdu vs bvm1911. Any other advice you have about how to record would be appreciated. I am a noob when it comes to making videos.
You need to have the refresh rate of your camera synced up. A lot of it will come down to your camera and it's settings. Play around with it until you get something that looks how you want it to. Most people just live with whatever results they get on the first try, so it helps to allow yourself some time to tinker around with adjustments.

I have a 20 inch Samsung crt with component that I use to play my Sega Saturn and other retro games from my raspberry pi 3b. It’s not the biggest or best but the games look great to my eyes ☺️

Would be cool to see companies make new CRTs again at some scale if only to work with the games of yesteryear. I'm happy I saw this switch coming so picked up a bunch of B&O MX7- and 8000s when they were commonplace (even got one for free). Sadly don't have a Trinitron though but yeah... 4x MX series, a small TV I picked up off the street and my old Grundig should hopefully last me through my lifetime at least.
My personal opinion is that 13-in TVs are the best.
But what I'm playing on now is a CRT HD TV. It's 30in and 150lbs!

You can use an OSSC on a CRT for exmaple on HD CRTs or much better PC CRT Monitors
Scanlines on even halfway decent crts aren't even that noticeable unless you're sitting way too close. I don't see why people obsess over them so much. I personally can't stand how it's been implemented on modern screens either. It's never been so obvious.
Even I would admit that I probably obsess over them more than I need to. But hey, it's what I'm into. If you have a larger CRT, the scanlines (or technically the "blank lines") are a lot easier to see without getting close. But then you're dealing with an even larger CRT and CRTs are already large to begin with :)

psx saturn , In Samsung TVs, if you lower the contrast enough, you raise the brightness somewhat to compensate for the decrease in contrast and lower the definition to the top, the pixels and saw teeth disappear;)

Great video! Although technically the scan lines are the colored lines being drawn or scanned, not the black ones. Scan lines also appear in 480i content, they just alternate to create a higher resolution.

While using CRT TV for Retro Games, you will not experience input lag, ghosting, bleeding, and dead pixels as the LCD TV has.

Low lag (4ms) OLEDs have become available these day though, and when combined with a good scaler, it looks just as good or better than a consumer CRT (PVMs will always look the best). OLEDs have greatly closed the gap on the black levels, and almost never have dead pixels. The only CRT I would ever get is a PVM, normal CRTs compared to them are blown out of the water.
A few weeks ago, me and my dad picked up a JVC CRT TV, and it's hooked up in my room. Now I can reminsence the good ol' times. ;-)
What transcoder do you use?.. I need a vga (dsub-15) to component (ypbpr) transcoder. I just can't find one lol. Those things are hard to come by these days! 🤷🏼♂️

I have 3 crt tvs, one for the nes,one for the snes, and one for the sega genesis, using composite for the nes and sega while using svideo for the snes

I had to leave my last CRT in my apt when I moved. No way I was getting that beast down stairs. Don't even know how it got up there to begin with.
I actually prefer composite for Saturn games because the dithering actually looks like transparency! No it's not as crisp, but it looks good with games like Nights into Dreams. S-Video or better reveals the checkerboard dithering and it no longer appears transparent.
I saw a Sony widescreen crt missing it’s rear shell parked on the side of the street the other day. The back end of the tube was smashed off really brutally and I took a solid minute to pay my respects. What a cruel world.
I used my daughter toy wagon to pushed the heavingly ass tv across the room. I didn't have anyone helping me lifting it up and so I have to hold up by myself and push it up on the tv stand. I'm getting too old to do this. I'm in my mid 40s. Probably never again.

Gosh I'm wanting a nice crt. I wonder if the Retron 5 lag would be gone if played on a crt? A person would need a hdmi to composite converter or something.
That's a tough one. I have never used a Retron before and so I don't know for sure. Didn't Retrons used to have like S-Video and other analog signals like that?

Yes I've been wanting this kind of TV for quite a while now and after watching this video again you said the ones with component hook ups was a little more rare..got me wondering so I moved my TV out a little and looked and behold..its there and s-vid too! My Saturn is currently hooked to the s-video but that component hook up gives me more options. Thanks for the video on this. I watched more than once. Its short, and to the point. 😁👍
I'm still using emulation for my cartridges, but I want to get some original consoles and a CRT TV at some point.

Are there any adapters for any CRT TVs that don't have a component input?
If a CRT has S-Video or Composite, most consoles have cables you can find to support those inputs. Even for component, most older consoles now have specialty component cables (can be expensive though).
