    When I was a Marine in afghanistan in 3/5 kilo ,circa 2010, I used a mk12 with leupold 2.5-8x, with an unknown amount of rounds through it(heavily used), using mostly 77gr 262, but also mk318 sost , and green tip when we ran lower on the match ammo. It was a great addition to our small units, and was able to use it quite effectively n

      Would you say Military should simply switch to a 16 in barrel and use mk262 ammo to solve the issues they said they encountered in Afghanistan such as not reaching out to the enemy or you think a new caliber is needed???

When I got to 3/7 I was originally Kilo December 2012 and the DM role as well as SAW gunners were considered obsolete once we got IARs. Always wondered did DMs have to take a shooting course from STA guys? Did any DMs go through Pre Sniper? Did y’all utilize dopes and ballistic computers? I should have asked these questions when I was still in lol

      I highly agree. But there's something to be said for being able to adjust your stock for body armor thickness and getting in and out of a Humvee or MRAP with the shorter rifle. However, given the choice, I'd choose an M16 size gun for a couple major reasons: Velocity and terminal effect on target. Everybody knows a 20 inch barrel with 5.56 causes horrific damage compared to the shorter barrels. There is also the added bonus of penetrating more hard cover than an M4.

      I did it with an old worn M4 and green tips. I'll even say that I can teach anyone to do it consistently if given a few days and a good range. Btw, I wont even pretend to be the greatest shot. I'm decent. This just is not hard, even with bad wind it's doable with a mid range optic.
      With a proper Mk12 this is totally cake.

    • @sgtsnuggles9112
      @sgtsnuggles9112 6 років тому +25

      Its accurate. It's just not very effective out past 500. From a military standpoint at 800 yards it has less energy than necessary to penetrate a helmet, let alone a ballistic plate. I wouldn't use it for hunting past 300, but then again I don't ever shoot beyond that range anyway.
      I'd classify it as capable of hitting the target at 800, but not capable of reliably killing what you're shooting.

    • @brainplay8060
      @brainplay8060 6 років тому +9

      @@sgtsnuggles9112 At 100 yards no .30 caliber is going penetrate a ballistic plate so the situation is moot. But then we're not fighting anyone with ballistic plates and probably won't for a long while. At 800 yards it will penetrate but not yaw so pencil wounds. But a wound is still a wound. A punctured lung will take anyone out of a fight and a ruptured kidney means they'll take 30 seconds longer to bleed out. At that range they won't be replying with anything that can reach you anyway unless it's a belt fed and most likely they'll be in no shape to operate it anyway.
      Your sentence is more appropriate if you state, "it's not reliably capable of incapacitating a target instantly at that range".

    • @smithnwesson990
      @smithnwesson990 5 років тому +2

      Its still not practical. Try firing that moving around not laying down at moving targets. It has very little energy. The 5.56 already is not ideal at 500 yards. It works 400 and in preety well but after that it is a pea shooter

    After going transonic it can enter a period called hyperoscilation which gets exponentially worse over time/distance. I can tell you that an Afghan national around 120lbs was put down at 657m on May 10, 2010. I was the one who did it, he was firing a pkm braced on the remains of a mud hut. I can give you MGRS chords. Where it happened. The ammo was 77gr smk black hills, I brought 200 rounds in country with me. I was the designated Marksman who normally carried an m-14. I borrowed a m16a4 from the armory for that mission because I was having ammo issues with my m14 ebr. I took it to the little range we had setup and shot 20 rounds to verify zero, i was using the only scope they had in the armory, a mark 4lrt that look like hell but still worked. It was half rattle canned tan, half greenish. I used my backup rings I brought with me, steel weavers that were years old. So yes, it's lethal at 650, I wouldn't trust it too far past that distance. I did hit another further but he got back up, he was 730-740m. I thought I screwed up when I hit him, I thought I was using 308 drops by mistake but the guy spotting said I hit him.

    My sons friend built a similar rifle and used Blackhills 77gr out to 800yds and it shot very well. But there was literally no wind that day (and the moon and stars were aligned just right) . You are shooting in strong winds with good hits. Great shooting. I saw the groups this young man was shooting that day (which were amazing) and advised him that was great but we will come back when there is wind. You can imagine it wasn't a good day when the wind was blowing on the next trip out. No wind is easy, strong winds is tough. Must practice in all conditions including snow, rain, wind, cold, hot and keep a good ledger of your rifles performance which will change with the weather conditions. Great video.

    • @9HoleReviews
      @9HoleReviews  6 років тому

      Thank you! The hardest honestly are the gusts. If you look at that terrain, the 150-500 are somewhat enclosed with the shrubs on two sides and the berm blocking some wind. The worst is behind the 500y berm. There is a river behind too, that gives us a nice mirage whenever we look past 500, and the field is wide open. That said, you are arcing the 77gr projectile high enough to pick up a second wind gradient at that altitude that we have to account for (I was holding 9 MRAD at 800y, so i'm aiming about 20ft in the sky without adjustment).

    • @msantifort
      @msantifort 6 років тому +1

      I was impressed by your hits considering your weather conditions(awesome). I always paint my targets white before I start shooting so I can see my hits through my spotting scope. I know you know this but I noticed your targets showed hits before you started shooting at 800yds. I like the fact that you shoot off your backpack which is more realistic.I try to do this most of the time unless sighting in a new rifle or setup. All my scopes are MOA, unable to switch, my old mind is locked into it. I believe MRAD is better but it's too late to switch. Considering an MOA scope with MOA markings on the reticle (MOA Quad), sounds like it might work for quick followup shots like you were doing. Appreciate your replies and hope to see more videos.

    Excellent video. I use IMI 77 grain or hand loads only in my MK12Mod0 and have found the IMI ammunition to be excellent in my rifle. Consistently hovers at 1 MOA so far . I can wring out a bit better with hand loads but the improvement is so minor that it's hard to justify the time needed when the IMI offers consistently excellent results.

    My brother, a U.S. Marine who served in (an as yet untaken) Ramadi in '03, told me (with all sincerity) that his squad regularly made 700 to 1000 yard shots from rooftops, with their issued M16s (not M4s!).
    *I absolutely believe him, because my brother's integrity, to anyone who knows him, is solid.*
    When I relayed that story to fellow, *civilian* shooters, however, it was met with incredulity...
    Nice to see some ACTUAL validation that it is possible, if the shooter does his part!

      There are many accounts like this and with a better 18" barrel it is child's play. M16 is no joke. 20" with irons is no slouch either. Look at Camp Perry! I believe especially with a Marine shooter!

This winter I will be able to stretch it to 600 yards. The same ammo from my 16 inch 1 in 9 chrome lined carbine barrel pushes 2720 fps. Again 300 yards is easy. Keep up the good work.

With lethal effect .. or even to just keep the enemy Honest at 800 yards. But for sure this is a great tool at 600 or 650 yards...

    I love my IMI 77gr 5.56 ammo. Great ammo for a budget price. Not the cheapest, but effective, accurate round at a long distance (for this caliber). My girlfriend shot a .5 moa group @ 100 yards in 6 shots. I have only been able to do that in 3 shots. But this is sub moa ammunition. I can keep it .75 moa for most of my shots if I'm shooting my best. Great video btw. I have only shot out to 600 yards and it works well. 8-10 inch steel targets are no match for this round at that distance.

    • @9HoleReviews
      @9HoleReviews  6 років тому

      Jeremy Mchenry we actually just finished filming for our “classic” review of this rifle. The IMI yielded very interesting results... and there are major variances between color and brown box IMI that is not covered in their adverts.

    • @mchenryjeremy
      @mchenryjeremy 6 років тому

      @@9HoleReviews Hmmm, I bought two bulks (1,000 rounds total, I don't have the time to reload) of this ammo, haven't seen much variation as far as box differences etc. There were some off days I had where I knew I was rushing shots, etc. and was shooting 1-1.5 moa. For the most part, I think I got lucky with the barrel in that rifle I put together because it's really, really accurate for a 5.56. If I could post pics of the groups on here, I would. My buddy's 5.56 can only shoot about one moa with this same ammo. I think a lot of has to do with how well the barrel takes the bullet. I use 1/7 twist btw, @ roughly 2720 fps.

    • @9HoleReviews
      @9HoleReviews  6 років тому +1

      Jeremy Mchenry we tested it with 4 lots across the span of a year and found that sometimes you’d hit a bad lot and the groupies go from 1.1 MOA to 3 MOA (we do multiple 9 shot groups to clock for any abnormal variations. We’ve shot 0.5MOA 5rd groups but the 9 rounds are or standard. The first time we came across iffy IMI was when we first filmed this rifle on this course. With brown box we couldn’t shoot past 350 without misses... and you see what color box puts out here.
      We were clocking at 2700fps as well.

    So in conclusion this is a very accurate DMR,beeing able to get out those fast double-taps up to 500 with that supressor on it the target will have a hard time to spot you(cause allready neutralised),overall i think the 5.56 is just the right caliber for your basic-infantery-combatrifle which most of the time will be used from closecombat up to 300m ,the only thing it´s missing is penetration.The recent military-conflicts showed that your basic-combat-squad(m4´s + light machinegun) in mid to longer-distance-battles fire a hell lot of shots (speaking shot/kill-ratio-wise),so the militarys stared to ad more dmr´s to their units and the´re a lot of good plattforms in 7.62 on the market.

    It's very interesting to see 5.56 at long range. It can hit pretty well at long ranges, just loses so much velocity and the energy to move plates once you get to about 700 in this video. I wonder if there is a 6mm of some kind or flavor of being close to that number that may help keep the lightness of 5.56, but still have enough energy to stay super sonic enough at 800 yards...
