IBM dominated the computer industry until 1985. It's manufacturing was operating 24 hours nonstop with 3 working shifts. It was the best company to work for. Retirees in early days can collect over 90% of their annual salaries. It had a country club in Pokeepsise NY that offered free golf, tennis, swimming, among others to employees. Unfortunately the CEOs were business people with marketing backgrounds and not technologist, eventually leading the company to downfalls.
The old IBM machines are built so solid that it has been running for years after years after years without shut down or repair. There no such thing as "bug" as compare to newer system. The older machine is built so good even now, lot of Fortune 500 Companies backend processing still using IBM and their languages until after Y2K when out sourcing started and the quality goes down. Another perfect example is Intel.
Yes i was at a different IBM country club many years ago. Back around the late 2000's i visited one of IBM data center which was the largest in USA at that time. Microsoft benefited from the Microsoft- IBM joint development of the OS/2 splitted away taking the graphical windows user interface into the early Microsoft Windows, and similarly Microsoft also got a good deal getting a big jump start learning from their joint effort with Sybase to from their SQLServer database...in terms of security one can argue the OS390-ZOS-LINUX is hackproof...never heard of anybody hacking or brother to or able to hack into it, nor any injection into its IMS DB/DC/TM / Fastpath family of databases. IBM was a pioneer in the SOA message sync/async queuing technology before other vendors like oracle i think, way before the more recent and popular Kafka etc came on the scene. Back in the late 2000's i have seen some DB2 manuals written in chinese that contained more in depth technical information than the English version. They have some good talent in China. Too bad they closed down the China lab.
IBM has very difficult times. IBM consulting employ mostly Indian. Their quality is better than other Indian consulting companies (e.g. TCS, virtusa,...) However, they are expensive and IBM took large percentage from them. IBM Consulting is going downside. Some of the old IBM technologies are also too costly (e.g. IMS DB, ISAS DB2, Netezza,..) they are good products. However it is a competitive world. IBM is struggling.. We have been using IBM products for 1/2 of century. COBOL, COLT, Assembler, MSDB, DEDB, IMS DB, DB2, Netezza,....) We are seeing that IBM is losing their piece of the cake.
@callmebackfriday2 I believe so, cuz I did it for a global bank, guess it is somewhat around 😅. Still remembering those days decipher the packed decimal data, it was tough but fun
@callmebackfriday2 but cobol developer is still a great demand here in Kuala Lumpur, great pay cuz now is a super niche skill & knowledge, not many people wanna do it nowadays
@@MereDustOnEarth Yes. Totally agreed. I have been training offshore teams in India, Philippines and Ireland for many years and they don't quite get it at the beginning. Ireland team has the best quality in term of work and learn fast and they don't lie when project is late. India has the most failed project because they claimed it is done and they did not test their codes, when they do, they do it in Production. LOL Guess what, after all these outsource team got the knowledge, they resign and go to other companies because of high demand and Paid. What a waste of time !
Time and tide wait for no man (or in case of IBM - time and ride wait for no hero)
IBM developed first open system PC in 1981 in Boca Raton, Florida. I was working in 1980 for Siemens on R&D of Telephone Switching System across the street of IBM Boca Campus. Now IBM is gone from Boca.

I worked for them 2014 to 2018. So sad to see them declined.

oracle系 known for database,唔係datacenter,對標amazon AWS redshift….

20 yrs ago I was coding cobol in mainframe, time flies
I am pretty sure your codes are still running today, same as my codes. so happy I am not alone. 🤣

@@MereDustOnEarth Thanks bring back for all the memory. Remember Compile code in debug mode and go through the Debugger? 😁

Acer

HP
Packabell

I had been using IBM PC since 1983, so the information in this video is incorrect.
