My husband Archie owned a nightclub in Glasgow and Nat King Cole came to sing there. They became good friends. What an outstanding man he was! He had little Natalie with him, she was just a little girl, and he was touring with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. They all sang at his club. This was because of an Artist's Strike in England. They weren't allowed to perform there, because there was a boycott of American Artists, so they went to Scotland instead and somehow ended up at my husband's Jazz Club! What a treat that must have been, he spent the rest of his life talking about it! They're all gone now, even sweet little Natalie has passed on. God rest you all in peace, I don't think we'll see the likes of you again...
It does. My only criticism of it, albeit it is a minor one. It's too short. I know a wise person once said, that no piece of art is ever finished, merely abandoned. Well, I think the composer gave up too soon with this one in my humble opinion. How about this: "And as he went away, His words came to haunt my day I thought of many things Fools and Kings. This remained with me... The greatest thing that I ever learned Was just to love and be loved in return" Reprise
this was my grandpa's favorite song. may he rest in peace. he loved every person he ever met, and i never saw him get mad at anyone. i try to be more like him each day, and though i fall short sometimes, i hope he's proud of me.

Isn't that always the way. Truth IS stranger than fiction... you hear/see it in movie plots. Never thought it to be true in life, but it seems so: She loves him, while another loves her; but He loves another, who does not love him....
Bless you Eden Ahbez for writing such a beautiful and captivating song and bless you Nat King Cole for recognizing the transcendental quality of the original and by making it your own breathing new life and love into the spirit of this timeless classic
Did you know that Ahbez was homeless when he wrote this and he lived under the first "L" of the Hollywood sign at the time. True. It was a tribute to the Nature Boys, a pre-hippy group in the late 1940's.
Although Eden Ahbez may have wrote the Lyrics, the hypnotic melody is much older. The original melody was from a Yiddish song 'Hush my Heart'. The irony is the original song had the exact opposite message. The Hush my Heart melody, Eden words, and the Great Nat King Cole soothing voice created the magic we are hearing that will stand the test of time. ❤

Nat King Cole had the most smoothest, clearest singing of any body....If he would have been a Bird, it would have been the Canary....Just a beautiful Golden voice....Listening to him, is like listening to a storyteller magically weaving words in and out, and just lulling you in to bliss.....
You describe it well. His voice is actually soothing. Another excellent voice today is Alex Cuba. His genre is Latino, but his slow tempo tunes are also soothing. Bless you
There are few things we can all agree on these days so when I see 17K likes and zero dislikes for something, something which doesn't involve peanut butter, sex, ice cream or dare I say it, all three, it gives me hope. Many artists are deserving of that kind of appreciation but perhaps none more than this gentleman. Why? Because he was as gifted a pianist as he was a singer and, the perfect gentleman as well, at a time when he had every right and reason to be otherwise. That and the fact that he was taken from us much too soon in 1965 at the age of 45.
As my mom used to say about me when I was a kid, I will say the same for Nat King Cole, "They broke the mold when that one was born!" Indeed they did, his uniqueness still shines.
A song written by a man who lived his adult life outdoors - reportedly under the second L of the HOLLYWOOD sign, no less - a man who refused royalties, preferring to divide them up and hand them to strangers...yes ladies and gentlemen, eden ahbez had the right to write this poem, later adapted into a song...I'm genuinely tearing up to think that there was such a selfless soul out there. You don't hear much about them anymore. But they're out there.
Should have said in the OP, his name was eden ahbez, and the lack of capitals are intentional, as he didn't believe in capitalising names that weren't righteous IE God. This video has had the copyrights removed in my country, so I cannot edit my original post as far as I can tell, as the comments are no longer appearing.
I also think it's an enchantingly beautiful song. I'm disturbed though by (what I know of) the life story of its writer and how that relates to the song's subject. I mean, if it had been written by one of eden abhez's friends, OK, great; but written by him, it can't not be understood as self-aggrandisement, self-mythologising, self-propaganda, can it? I was recently reading Orwell's essay, Reflections on Gandhi. I found this passage: 'In this yogi-ridden age, it is too readily assumed that “non-attachment” is not only better than a full acceptance of earthly life, but that the ordinary man only rejects it because it is too difficult: in other words, that the average human being is a failed saint. It is doubtful whether this is true. Many people genuinely do not wish to be saints, and it is probable that some who achieve or aspire to sainthood have never felt much temptation to be human beings.' Seems an important argument to make... I don't know much about eden ahbez, but I'm troubled by the thought that this is him telling everyone how special he is, how much better than others he is... And partly just because he, constitutionally, happens to be a lot more nomadic than most. Do you see what I'm saying? Beautiful song though.
For many decades this hauntingly beautiful song has been my favorite of all of Mr. Cole's recordings. The message remains as true to me now as it did all those years ago. Our world would be a better place if people everywhere embraced this simple truth.
Listening to this song, I see and hear things in my imagination that I can't really put into words. It is beautiful, it is whimsical, it is painful.....
I keep seeing this nature boy, travelling through forests, deserts, a million mile stare on the prow of a ship on the ocean, enduring all.... and such a life, and such experieces of all the folk he has seen... and even through nature and wildlife.... this most important of lessons.
This was one of the songs I remember my dad playing on our stereophonic record player. I loved it as a kid, I was a strange kid, and so to hear a song that speaks well of an odd kid, and I felt I shared this song with my dad, like he was the narrator of the song, and we would talk of many things....
I love this song. Ever since my dad sungvit to me, as a little boy I remember it and sing it often. And I'm now 65 years of age. I still sing it and to my sons'.... And grands... One of God's gift of beauties... In our lives...."love" thank Mr. Nate King Cole... For creating memories in my life, through this song
My dad bought a new 1975 Cadillac Coupe Deville when I was a kid. Back then new caddies came with a complementary 8track tape of Cadillac driving music. Nat King Cole was one of the best!! This was theme song in the 1947 movie "The Boy with the Green Hair" - with Dean Stockwell, I loved the movie and to me unforgettable because of the awesome story it told. This song is over 67 yrs. old and they are still singing it. Amazing words. ~~:o)
Jason Gould (Streisand's son) sang this in the movie he made for his Mom for her birthday. He did a great job.....he has a beautiful voice and the movie was wonderful. I love Nat King Cole.......this is a classic!
A beautiful song sung so beautifully! Upon hearing this song at the end of Christian Slater's film Untamed Heart, I immediately sang it multiple times and committed it to memory❣
Nat Cole could sing a song like no one else that I’ve ever heard. He was one of those one-of-a-kind people who come along once. He was also a first rate jazz pianist. As the story goes he was playing in a club one night and a patron asked him to sing a song and the rest is history. There’s a great picture of him on the cover of his album The Very Thought of You.
There are people out here in SunValley, near LA, that remember the man who wrote this Eden Ahbez. He was a recluse, a loner who lived outside in the woods. He was the real deal. Look up his story if you want to see someone who was selfless. He gave away his royalties to needy people even when he lived a spartan life. Not many like that anymore.
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love, and be loved in return". It always hits me.

because of my childhood. We always had music playing at home and the
Candy Store....where your dad grew up!
I also thought of you because of our conversation about poetry! How Apropos!
This has always been my favorite Nat Cole song. Such a beautiful voice, such a sage message.
One of the most beautiful songs
of all time, and one of best singers of this song!
For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalist-pianist Nat King Cole, pianist Hank Jones, and score composer Frank de Vol.
I so loved this song from Untamed Heart with Christian Slater. Man, this song made me cry so hard back then.
Such a hauntingly beautiful tune, so melancholy yet still somewhat hopeful@!

The sound of velvet as personified by the voice of this phenomenal singer, Nat King Cole.
The lush orchestration and the phenomenal enunciation of Nat King Cole, gets me deep in my heart every time, not to mention the lyrics...

Great song. Great guy that left us too soon. Thanks for posting

The Great Nat King Cole. With a voice that just consumes you. I close my eyes and I'm five years old again.............. Thank you Sir
A beautiful song sung so beautifully!
Upon hearing this song at the end of Christian Slater's film Untamed Heart, I immediately sang it multiple times and committed it to memory❣
Words are simply inadequate to describe this. Perhaps only an act of kindness to a stranger is what it deserves.
A very beautiful song, I love Nat King Cole's soothing voice and the message in this song.🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This is the perfect blending of melody, mood, instruments, arrangement, sound engineering, lyrics and voice.
What a enchanted song!!! What a wonderfu voice! What a inspiring lyric! 🙏♥️
the original is by Eden Ahbez.. not his lyrics
This is one of the most beautiful love songs I have ever heard.
That voice is liquid gold.
This was Betts, my deceased wife, favouritte love song. Will always love you girl.
Then you are lucky enough to know the truth of the lyrics, first hand. God bless you, and I'm so sorry for your loss. XXX
We will all be together again 🤍
There are people out here in SunValley, near LA, that remember the man who wrote this Eden Ahbez. He was a recluse, a loner who lived outside in the woods. He was the real deal. Look up his story if you want to see someone who was selfless. He gave away his royalties to needy people even when he lived a spartan life. Not many like that anymore.
Нет слов,чтобы описать этот голос и то,как он воздействует на все, что его слышит. А эти интонации слышит все живое...и открывается ЛЮБВИ...
Unbelievably beautiful. Stunning words, voice, and instrumentation. Gawjeous!
