I'm watching this video in 2022 and I heard you say you wasn't good on "UA-cam" yet, but that you would improve. Dude, you are, today, the best storyteller on UA-cam. You did it!
Im actually a teacher and I'm going to teach my first in-person semester in a few days, I've been binge watching this dude because 1. the stories are great and 2. he has an amazing way of telling things, I want to understand how he can catch people's attention! so so so good
Absolutely. Im so glad I discovered him! His newer episodes are awesome, too! I have his notifications turned on. He's the only UA-camr I've actually enabled notifications for.
This is what I like. No music, Not an annoying voice, straight to the point, a clear yet intriguing voice and not an ad in sight! Mrballen, my new favourite story teller
❤ I love me some Mr. Ballin and he's definitely come along way from where he used to be. But I feel like nobody talks about how he has a whole team around him now but only posts once a week.😢😢😢 I know I'm lucky he posts at all, but I need him to fall asleep to. So I have to go Back to the oldies because I've already been caught up in all his videos.😅
This was less than a year ago, and this dude is already pushing 3M subscribers. That's some major league story telling skills right there. I stumbled upon this channel on UA-cam about a week ago, and I'm already close to being done this entire library. One of the best youtubers right here, thanks for keeping me entertained!
I sooo agree with you! He has a lifetime income if he continues with Utube. Very clearly articulated (VOCABULARY and Sound perfect) and videos are so professionally presented.I could watch his videos for hours and never get bored.
I've gotten lost in a forest after dark. I took pictures in order to see things and to find my way because it was so dark and there were cliffs on the sides of the path. It was one of the scariest experiences of my life. Seeing those pictures gave me flashbacks. They must've been horrified.
I believed a member or members of uncontacted tribes killed those young women. There are unknown tribes in south america that have never seen a modern person before. Or a dangerous person from that continent killed them. I don't believe the girls fallen & got killed by their surroundings.
@@seline.michell I finally made it back to the path eventually then from there I knew where I was going as long as I stayed on it. I had a map but had gone on some closed trails. Due to landslides large parts of the trail had been completely wiped away and I had to make my own way while traversing up and down the cliffside. Learned my lesson. They don't close off trails and roads for nothing!
MrBallen, an updated rendition of this story would be highly appreciated, especially in light of the podcast 'Lost in Panama,' which has unveiled lots of previously unknown information. Plus, experiencing this narrative through your much better storytelling technique now would undoubtedly elevate the presentation!
They went more for drama wanting it to be a murder case - when they actuallky have alot of the facts handy that shows it is most certainly a case of getting lost and injured and amateurish search for them.. Sadly. Why would they still be using their phones otherwise? Alot of people with Hollywood movies in their mind wish for something spectacular.. When it is pretty evident they got lost, injured and sadly not found in time.. it is that simple
@@valiquettekelly65 Noty if you have a brain and look at the facts. Explain why they were out in the jungle for over a week then, attempting to be found..
Not being fancy at UA-cam is a good thing here - bells and whistles get tiresome - fancy intros with special effects get tiresome - I like how he just comes on talking - he cuts straight to the chase. The dialogue and subtle editing combine to make a clean, potent, likable product. Refreshing, no bad aftertaste
Personally I thought it was the most boring, bland, and uninteresting rendition of a boring story that's been easily explained. I love Ballen's content usually but this one was a giant miss.
Writing from the future here! Mr. Ballen, you have become one of the best storytellers out there! But one can easily see that happening from watching your earliest videos. Your voice is epic, your explanations clear and concise, the details are amazing and your empathy shines through!
I actually had a history teacher that he really reminds me of, that was the only class that I ever got higher than a barely passing grade. We need people like him teaching.
MrBallen is like the cool cousin that always has crazy shit to talk about at the family get-togethers. So wholesome and respectful but also jaw dropping.
Haaa! Quite true...I've been thinking this guy would be a great person to run into at a bar or something like that. I could just imagine him with some drunk ppl gathered around, captivated as hell, as he's telling a story. Lol
@@speakwright1 It could have been someone in the hostile they were staying at that saw they had something they could steal. You can't rule anything out in an investigation. If I were the lead detective the first thing I would do is get a list of all the people staying at the hostile the day they went missing.
Those poor girls were murdered, hands down. I’m from Colombia and it’s extremely dangerous for tourists to be wondering on their own, especially folks from developed countries such as America, The Netherlands etc. going on their own was such a poor decision man..May those two girls rest peacefully
Those girls were from the Netherlands, they were just really naive, thinking the rest of the world is safe to be doing this , 2 girls alone in the woods
@salty fisken because it was a serial killer who did this. He probably folded their clothes really nice and tight and put the bag in some place easy to find so they could stop looking for the girls, managing to be easy to find the corpses along with the other ones. That place was probably his dumping ground. This serial killer is now killing in some other place
Comparing your old content to your new ones makes me appreciate how far you've improved over the past few years. And now watching you on this video acknowledging that you're not very good on UA-cam make me want to go back in time when you first posted this and tell you, "Don't worry, bro. Wait a couple of years and you'll own this." 😊
This is an uncomfortable poop. It is mostly diarrhea. It's uncomfortable, but at the same time it is one of the most satisfying poops. It feels like a load is being taken off of my stomach area. Also, I didn't have a good poop for 2 or 3 days, so this feels relieving😮

I feel like they were attacked in the dark and snapping pictures to try and use the flash to see what was going on. Maybe the red head got hit in the head with something which is why the picture of her head bleeding was in the camera roll maybe? Because if I get hit I’m gonna say “am I bleeding?” Also...I feel like this is a tourist trap for cannibalism. Which would be why there was multiple bodies scattered and such. Just a wild theory though.-also the deleted picture (in theory) was them randomly snapping to try and see what was going on around them in the dark and they captured their murderer.
The deleted picture, which can only, to our knowlegde, be deleted via a software on a computer, must have been taken of the murder - and then taken to the murders computer from which he permanently deleted the picture, and placed the camera in the backpack 5 months later and placed it nicely to be found. But in order for a human cannibal to kill 2 people at night, pitch dark, he can't see himself without light, since these girls could not. Therefore he either had night goggles or it was not a human. Aliens, which have animal eyes, can see well in the dark without light, could probably permanently delete a photo on a camera by the touch of a button, who knows lol. That camera flash would only light up probably 2-3 meters at max, for a 0,25 second time - but if an animal or an alien was flashed, its eyes would light up like daylight so to speak in reflection, which human eyes can't. So maybe thats why it got deleted. But who eats their body, without leaving a scratch to a bone? And just randomly lays bones around the area, instead of neatly place them in a pile or bury them - since their clothes along the road was neatly folded, their backpack was nice and just sat there dirtfree, as in taken good care of. An aligator can swallow people whole, or rip limbs off without scratching a bone, and then clean the bones with its very strong stomach acid, since the bones was so nice and almost bleached. An animal dont give a damn about where to drop the limbs or bones after a meal. But an aligator cant try to log into a cellphone 78 times. An aligator can't fold clothes. A human killer dont fold clothes in the jungle, or place their belongings in the same backpack and puts it there, exposing himself for dna evidences etc. If it was a human, they would have placed the folded clothes in the same backpack aswell. Since we dont know the time staps of the 90 photos, we dont know if they were within 1 minute, or taken over 15mins. If they were taken over 1 minute, the pic of the back of the ginger head would have been not at focus of her head, but taken as a rapid need for light in that direction, and her head just was in the way of whatever was being needed light for. And the last picture she may have moved her head away, and exposing the killer in front of them in the last picture, which somehow got deleted. She could fairly easy have slipped or tripped and knocked her head at a rock exposing some blood during the panic runs in the pitchblack escape. But by my logic the pics's timestamp would been the last minutes of their life before eaten by aliens lol. A human would easily know that "breaking" a pin code to access someone elses phone is pretty impossible. They would also then try to recharge the other girls phone, and try on that one aswell, but they didnt. So a computer would likely not been here. A human killer isnt gonna do this shit either, so much hassle and time waste. The alien may have forced the camera to fk up at the last picture, forcing the photo to automatically be erased when taken, by magnetic energy. Lots of stories of aliens eating humans. They probably have the tech to dismantle any limb or bones scratch free. If u do some research of these things living at earea fifty 1, then testimonies of human army n nasa ppl laying for their death, telling whats down there and what they interract with, 7 stories below earth. Some of them do live in the forrest around the world, and will sometimes look like a human, but also like an alligator.
When I first heard this story I immediately thought that the girls were using the camera to take pictures to see where they were going at night. The last photo was probably a photo of the attacker.
@@kiki.23. very possible the murder planted the items because they wanted more attention, especially in the media. Very common for serial killers and with multiple bodies found where the girls were, its definitely a possibility.
@@kiki.23. Serial killers ALWAYS think they're smarter that the cops, so sending back the camera and the phones was just his way of taunting them and letting them know, "you'll never catch me. I'm far too clever."
Idk maybe they just got lost, the picture of the back of her head might have been to see where she scratched or fell. Then they lost the backpack and another fellow hiker months later see the pack laying under rock cervas. Things don't always have to be sinister, sometimes things look like they appear
It's so creepy how they were making distress calls within the first hour. And the double deleted pic? And scattered clothes? And perfectly placed backpack later on? Definitely killed.
Please DO NOT EVER go into a jungle or native or indigenous area especially in Latin America. The people don’t like visitors or intruders. Yes maybe they did tours but they probably did it to make more money easily. Hence the other remains. They hate anyone not from their tribes/area. How do I know this? I’m Mexican born. But i am mixed with European ancestry and i live & was raised in the US. I worked in a rehab facility and the mother of one of my patients was also Mexican but she was from the jungles of Puebla. Like deep jungle. They’re civilized but within their own tribes. They don’t like being around outsiders even if they’re from the same state. I never in a million years would have thought that a fellow Mexican would be so hateful towards me BECAUSE of me being Mexican but from “the city” she used to call me a city girl and a woman of the streets and of the world not traditional and not of good traditions and whitewashed. I told her i would love to visit the jungles she was from and she said Oh No you can’t come we’ll never let you in even scientists have to ask us for permission and then our town people decide who comes in and who doesn’t and we don’t like intruders because we don’t know what type of ideas they’re bringing in. She HATED me so much because i was close enough to being of her people but not by her tradition standards. She called my mother worse things (my mom worked there too) because she had been divorced. So yeah they have a hatred’s towards outsiders. I’m part indigenous because my dad has some Chichimeccan but even then absolute prejudice from her because i don’t look the part and im not from her tribe. Anyone from the outside coming in is seen as a threat with hatred. Her husband was also very inappropriate to most female staff. She said girls from her village get married at 15 and start having kids and fulfilling their house duties. They just have different ideologies and ways of living. God forbid you offend them in any way. I never did thank God. I was always super careful & i wanted her to accept & like me but i was an unwanted alien to her. Mind you im fairly classy and modest no strange piercings or tattoos or hair. Like im average. They also hate women that wear makeup, to them that automatically makes you a sinner. So yeah you never know how another culture even within your own may treat you, let alone someone from a further world.
@@Myah234this is what I was thinking. Those countries faced the worst of slavery, colonialism, and oppression from the US and other European countries. Most south American countries lost a lot of good people gaining their independence, and even then, foreign intervention from the US and other countries still fucks them over. And you go over there as a bunch of dumb, happy, white bitches, with expensive equipment, and go hiking in their land. Yeah, your ass is getting merc'd . I wouldn't be surprised if the Panama government was covering this shit up. And the US most likely knows what happened.
So the killer allowed them to keep attempting to make emergency calls? Really? You believe that? Seems pretty stupid to me. Perfectly placed backpack? As opposed to a not Perfectly placed backpack? The killer then said to hell with taking the cash in the bag? Lol "definitely killed" uh no. Definitely died of exposure.
Not sure you understand what a jungle is.... ever tried to get service even just out in the deep country anywhere? No I guess not. Otherwise you would understand that a jungle doesn't have cell phone towers in it
Yep, This is such a great idea especially when you can buy a small world camera for £10 online. Bedside the fact to help of you get lost or surveying, wouldn't you want to see your journey from your Dogs prospective?? What he sees off trail? Small animals that may be caught on camera it'd be great. If i was a hiker I'd have a head cam too cos it'd be good to watch after. I bet you'd see more watching the film than you do on your bike?!!
Seems like a solid idea depending on the dog in question, although I feel like what ever is behind these kind of events it would not help. I’ve done a lot of research into this kind of phenomenon and the only logical conclusion is that some sort of intelligence is doing this for reasons we do not understand. I’m not implying anything be it aliens or Sasquatch, etc. However logically the only explanation is an intelligent being, doing this for unknown reasons while making sure to cover their tracks to avoid not detection, since we do have some details but to avoid confrontation.
Thank you so much for telling such awesome stories. You are a GREAT story teller!! I am an Indigenous Ojibwa from Canada, and in my culture as well as many other cultures, being a storyteller is one of the highest roles to the people!! Thank you!
I’m thinking serial killer drop, serial killers tend to dispose of bodies in a single area. The bags being left along side of the road, that is the person or persons mocking the police or searchers. Bleached shattered bones, hmm, but not all of the bones...animals would have left chew marks, it takes years to naturally bleach bones even with UV lights. Chemicals would have left markers in the bone matter. Serial killer is my best guess.
The woman who found the bag needs to be looked into. Someone kidnapped them, stole their phone & camera. Realised they would get more money by giving information rather than selling off the stolen items, then made the backpack appear. If the woman received money for giving this info she is 200% involved.
VERY good theory. The murderer wanted the reward money, so he/she deleted the evidence and had an accomplice (the woman who 'found' the backpack) to try and claim the money. Hopefully she didn't get any, seeing as though the mystery is still unsolved.
If the girls were murdered, the guide would have an idea who did it. His farm is literally inside the jungle which his workers walk through every day. Had the girls died at the hands of a malefactor, all their belongings would be disposed of. What could a criminal gain by leaving clues and evidence? Agreed, the woman who handed it in should be investigated thoroughly, more so, if she claims a reward.
@@chrisyorke6175 That’s the thing, killers usually find amusement in teasing police, it’s pretty common. the fact they only left so little evidence in such weird ways really supports the theory. I’m not going into the whole details of it but there’s a lengthy reddit post that talks about it
I'm usually pessimistic about this stuff, but in this case (and I heard it in the news back in the days too) I actually do believe a man-eating predator might have been involved. If they were kidnapped no way would they have been able to use phone and camera for days. And about the deleted picture - not all cameras save background Meta-data and restoring info (some use the recovered space to overwrite the previous "slot"). As for the failed PIN attemps, what if one girls succumbed and the other didn't know her access code? As for the no-scratches on bones thing... I wouldn't trust their reports. Even more developed countries write off stabbings as suicide, you know...
Yeah, I was just moseying along then was like I will give this guy a try and not many can make my day cause I'm hard headed and people take my niceness as a weakness (good luck with that everyone) so here I am now and this guy whips around the corner and could have done a total head on collision with me but there was real thinking going on in this man while he had not much time but in his head made it from fast to slow motion to not bang into me. Phew! That dude was lucky. Lol! And I wanted to listen to him ever since. You with me?

I’m from Panama and let me tell you this, you definitely covered and explained the situation and the story better than the Police here. Love your channel!
I don't claim to be the expert but here I my theories about the things mentioned: - Night photos: girls used camera flash to either a) light up the area to see where they are going b) scare away nocturnal animals - Photo of the back of the head: Perhaps the girl who got injured asked her friend to take a picture to see for herself how bad the wound is - Multiple attempts to unlock the phone: Maybe one girl died earlier and the surviving one was trying to unblock her phone not knowing the password - Photos of red cloth and candy wrappers: marking down places along the way to see if they are going in circles and taking a photo to remember.
Yeah, those are the most normal parts though. The permenently deleted photo and other human remains (with no evidence of an animal attack) are really key here.
@@Tyler-vy4fg Regarding the permanently deleted photo - this is what doesn't add up for me the most and actually signals against the foul play. Why would you go to such lengths as to use laptop (killer happened to be carrying it in the jungles?) to remove 1 photo if you could just throw away/take with you an entire camera and no one would know? This deleted photo reminds me of a student joke who wrote number "1", "3" and "4" on three pigs and the entire campus were looking for the pig number "2". It could be a camera glitch skipping 1 number that's why there's not even a trace of that photo in memory. Although there was no animal attack their remains were more likely been scattered by scavengers (the "graveyard" of bones sounds like a lair of such an animal) They didn't find any big bones, so the leg they found was probably carried away either by animal or a river flow. However it could also be a big cover up story by that small town authorities, that didn't want to lose their tourism profit. Just like with the Elisa Lam story, where the absence of important video footage was highly suspicious.
Maybe it could have been an anaconda that finally found their bodies and ate them. Anacondas Squeeze their pray so no scratches on the bones. And the other bodies were other people who got lost in the jungle. The last photo I have no clue, maybe just a glitch or something.
For me it's when the pictures you see is in a bedroom and your in your room on your be with the lights off and the closet kind of open and you don't want get off your bed cause you think someone's going to grab your ankle and drag you under the bed never to be seen again... well that's just for me though
I'm sure they were taking those photos because they didn't have flashlights or their flashlights died. They were just taking flash pictures so they could see what was around them. And they were leaving candy wrappers and things as markers, and wanted to know/remember what they looked like. The last photo probably was a photo of the killer.
If you use the flash as light at night you'll get blinded temporarily. Also it doesn't show that they even made progress while taking the pictures, it's like they just took random pictures in 1 sitting. Also if you using the flash as light I'm pretty sure you would not care how the pic turned out, but all these photos look like they took the time to sit down and focus on something then take the pic, instead of just using the flash and move a couple of feet then doing it again
@@Onlyontuesday11 they took photos as fast as the camera flash would allow. They were all taken in one location. I think they were trying to signal or they were trying to see something in the dark that was scaring them
most likely they were followed by someone and tried to take pictures with the flash to see. Besides, the flashlight doesn't blind you if you keep the phone away. They succeeded in taking the picture of the killer and the fact that the killer had computer nearby to wipe the picture indicates these people were organized - like a drug cartel - and killed the girls among other people that's how the 3 other DNAs were mixed in.
The tour guide apparently went in their room while they were missing, searched where the phone charges were, stayed in their room for 30 minutes and then left. He didn't call the police right away but waited 10 HOURS before reporting them missing...that's more than enough time to do what he needed to do and take care of the bodies...One last thing, for some reasons he found most of the evidence even if it was in the middle of a huge jungle in pitch black...sounds like he was the one who put their body parts there from the first place...
I've researched this case as well and I agree with your theory. The tour guide had motive and opportunity in this case, and he failed to report key information in a timely manner -- that's a HUGE red flag.
Motive was…what ? If it’s the guide it should be other people knows about it and even help him. 5 dead humans…who was the other 3 dead ? Are people scared to silence ? Whom are they MOST AFRAID OF ??? No one collects the 30.000 dollar rewards and bc of that I really do understand they are scared 😱 Was it the guide who “found” the spot where the remains were at ?? Was he asking for the reward ?? Sorry my poor English , still struggling to spell … 🙏
@@mariawestman9026 sadly there never truly is a good motive. He could have just killed them or maybe intended to SA them and it got out of hand or really anything. Nowadays people kill and do heinous things as if there aren't ever consequences

@@TigerLily61811 drug cartels dont usually stalk and kill tourists for no reason. Nor would they waste time futzing with the camera, taking pics and wiping one of them. An intelligent Serial Killer makes more sense, as its 100% clear he liked a particular dumping ground (which they by rights the police should set up hidden trail cams there). It sounds like he played with their personal belongings, as most of them do, and then deposited them in the open, to ensure all would be found - (which I cant fathom how some idiot would reason they died from falling from this scattered evidence debris field). The well-placed backpack, just sitting there saying "please find me" is enough in itself to demonstrate to anyone human involvement and murder. Let's pray that they find this sicko and then do something very bad to him (or them). Its unfortunate when witnesses are too afraid to talk...perhaps the killer(s) is someone in s position of power. The locals know who did it, just like with the Natalie Holloway's case. I just hope in the near future there will be a day or reckoning for the human garbage that rubbed out two beautiful lives...
I would suggest an active serial killer with access to the police department computer such that they can delete image 509. Also if the serial killer is a police officer it would explain why no investigation has borne fruit and has been been written off as a simple accident. Who has the authority to close an investiagtion? The police. The killer, I suspect is a local police officer. The back packs were possibly moved from the location of the murders back into his own jursidiction to prevent any other police officers from becoming involved.
I came across your videos a few weeks ago when i was researching different stories about people disappearing in national forests. I am so perplexed by these types of stories! You have amazing content and i wouldn't change a thing! Its great!!
I think the picture that was permanently deleted was a shot of whoever killed them, and that person didn't want that evidence to be found. I personally believe that the reason why the backpacks where found, is because the person who did was 1)bragging about how they got away with it, 2) wanted the remains to be found possibly with their other victims, 3) and I believe the person who tried to get into the phone was either trying to take pictures of what ever they where doing to the girls, maybe wanted to mess with the parents, or possibly both things. Those bags were meant to be found, that person wanted everyone to know.
@@loveablekitsune3652 more likely that one female died earlier than the other, so she tried to unlock her friends phone but she didn't know the PIN. possibly also why there was a picture of the bleeding back of that one females head - she probably got injured and died before her friend. that one picture that got deleted doesn't really say much and it isn't confirmed that it had to be deleted by a computer

@@Hallo81398 when you delete a photo the data gets overwritten by new data when taking more pictures effectively permanently deleting. You don't need to connect it to a computer. Also from what i read the missing photo was actually the first of the night photos they started taking not the last.
I'd never let my daughter go into places like this due to my own experiences. I was going round in circles in the fog in a small forest near my home - a forest I knew well. It felt like I enter a new dimension in my local forest! Another time another place, a friend and I got lost in a forest with high cliffs on either side when we lost light. We had no idea where we were going and the constant up and down elevation was totally fatiguing us. The cliffs were obscured by bushes and trees but luckily we managed to get out before we fell off them. It was mentally and physically draining. I can totally understand when Mr Ballen says that 5 miles of mountainous jungle is difficult even for Navy Seals. High humidity means you cannot sweat enough so you overheat. That means you can't move as much and may start to hallucinate - it slows you right down.

Another theory was with the weird photos at the end was the girls using the flash to see whoever/whatever was around them. Such as they heard something and used the cameras flash to try to spot what it was. They must have been terrified!
I thought the same thing. Also, in the missing picture (5003?) they actually did manage to picture whoever was stalking them, that's why whoever was behind this had permanently deleted.
@@averagemoth there's a lot of info on Reddit and someone who's been a professional photographer for decades actually use the exact same camera, settings, etc and it does have an effective 10 meter flash range and he's got a lot of info. Althought this particular guy doesn't think they were murdered which I think they were, he's got very good info and insight on this. Also most of those pictures were taken around the same area. Now the picture of the "back" of kremers head if you look really close it's a sideway picture of her not the back. A portrait artist pointed this out. You can see an ear nose. As far as the backpack there's a lot of speculation that the people that found it actually went thru it without realising it was the lost girls . When they found out it was there's the put it back there with everything out "neatly" . Either way they clearly were murdered. One of the girls family blame Panama police for bit doing a proper job and they think they were murdered where the other girls family believe they just got lost and fell and that the police did a good job. There's so many things that could of happened. Apparently there's also a German guy who crossed them on the path and saw them get in a car. The first words in Lisanne Froons diary were that she hopes she doesn't turn up dead and that she wouldn't mind spending the rest of her life in Bocas. On that ill fated hike, they end up crossing back into the region of Bocas del Toro... granting her wish. The last words in her diary were 'tomorrow is another day (tomorrow will be better)'. The next day she went missing. I thought I had it bad, but rn I literally have tears in my eyes. I wish I could hug her.
I hiked the wonderland trail, alone with my dogs, a few years ago and heard something very similar from a much older hiker. I jokingly asked if I should worry about camping in the woods, several days from my car, alone. He said all I had to worry about out there was man.

When I was a young man I visited South America for several weeks. The vast majority of people have absolutely NO IDEA how DENSE & DANGEROUS these S. American JUNGLES truly ARE. Two very good looking young girls TREKKING - on their own - In a JUNGLE in PANAMA -- IS SIMPLY CRAZY. Unfortunately -- These TWO GIRLS were murdered . God rest their SOULS.
My first thought on this story was someone wanted to give up enough evidence to confirm they were dead to get searchers to stop tromping around the area for them because they were disturbing other activities in the region.
Interesting perspective. You can also question why they were not looking for the other people. Which were also found along with the remains of the girls.
drug cartels. I mean it is screaming that the cartels did this because the girls saw something they shouldn't have seen. (not a far fetch as any south american cartel would have to move through panama.
Yes, i knew this case already. First thought was they were just simply raped and killed by cartels. That is kind of lawless area. 2 beautiful white girl alone there...sad.
I actually have previously watched a documentary about this case but decided to watch MrBallen's video just to see how he told the story. There are a few pieces of information I want to add from what I remember from the documentary. I remember from the documentary that they had mentioned that the area they wanted to hike in was very dangerous, not just the conditions of the hike but the possibility of other people being inside the dense vegetation. There apparently had been other murders not far from where they were hiking that were "unrelated". The theory with the photos being taken in the dark was done so the girls could see where they were going, they were using the light from the flash to see where to go which is why the photos seem very strange because they weren't actually taking photos, just using the light (OR their murderer took the photos to confuse investigators). Another part of the story is the failed attempts to log in to the phone. It was theorized that the girl who owned the phone fell down into a ravine and the other girl was trying to get into her phone to call for help but didn't know her passcode, and that's why there were so many failed attempts. OR their murderer tried to throw off investigators by making it appear that they were still alive after they had been taken or murdered. Their remains were also extremely strange and suspicious. The only parts of Kris that were found were part of her pelvic bone and one of her rib bones with no flesh attached, completely clean and bleached. Traces of phosphorous were found in the bones, which when samples were taken of the area the bones were found, no traces of phosphorus were found, meaning they were intentionally chemically cleaned with phosphorous. Also, in addition to there being no blood found (the water would have washed away some blood but bone marrow is the longest surviving tissue and the last to decompose), the bones were found on the shore, and since bones are denser than water, they would have surely sunk and gotten caught in some rocks in the "snake-like" river they were found on the bank of. Instead, they were placed in the same general area as the other remains (which is very unlikely due to the shape of the river). For Lisanne, they found a chunk of flesh that still had larvae in it, and appeared to be in the "second stage" of decomposition, which is radically different from the state in which Kris's bones were. Also from Lisanne, they found her femur, shin bone, and left foot (which was still inside her hiking shoe), all with flesh attached and bone marrow inside. The cuts were clean and not jagged like you would expect if it was an animal or an accident. I'm not an expert, this is just what I remember plus some quick googling to make sure I said the right things. Overall, definitely does not appear to be an accident.
I agree with everything. I felt that there was something very wrong with the backpacks because they felt like they were put there to delay or confuse authorities. They were kidnapped, their organs were stolen, and then they dropped what was left in that area.
it an accident.there too many variable.including human factor.abduction dont appear like that.serial killer maybe.but there is none.to what end?ransom?panic and disoriented due to lost and injury is far more likely.destroying evident is more easy than csi fbi kfc western complicated method.few detail might be mixed up in this kind of stories.hell,i dont even know cause i wasnt even there.i just reflect on what i observed and experienced.2 city girl in dense jungle.when you step in rainforest jungle, you will quickly realize tree infront of you is the same as the tree behind you.low visibility, even the dozen of sound around you will make you paranoid.anyway,we all just guessing..r.i.p on those 2 soul.
The idea that the seemingly random nighttime photos were the girls’ attempt to see in the dark is exactly what went through my mind. I can’t fathom the terror these girls must have experienced. I can only hope their families get answers/closure one day 😔
I am absolutely amazed at how fast this guy blew up! And for good reason. Not only should we be thankful for his service but also for his awesomely interesting and thought-provoking content. 🤔
I know there are so many of us that are so thankful for your hobby of the strange, dark and mysterious. Really enjoying rewatching your videos from the very beginning. Thanks again, John. 😊
My theory: the girls made it to the area that they last photographed (may not be the area that the back pack was found) but I think they heard something in the dark, I’m assuming they heard their murderer, so then they used the flash on the camera to give light so they could see since their phones were dead. Or maybe they thought it was an animal and attempted to scare it with the camera flash? Maybe the last photo actually caught the killers face or something identifiable so he/she took their belongings, permanently deleted the one photo, then dropped the camera and phones at a random location to only confuse investigators and sway the theory away from murder.
I was born in Guatemala. I remember my grandmother telling us stories about things in the woods that they could not explain. People would go missing in the woods never be seen or looking for. Hiking is asking for trouble and tribes don’t take to well to outsiders. The older locales would tell you not to go in the woods with out you knowing what tribes live there.
The thing is they weren't far from civilization. Everyone acts like they were far out in the jungle but where their remains were found AFTER washing down river (away from where the hike started) was only about 7 miles from boquete. Not only that but there were villages further down the path meaning the trail was traveled pretty regularly. Any threats like animals or dangerous tribes would have been well known. This is also why I suspect foul play though, how do you get lost so close to civilization and not find anyone in over a weeks time. They were never further than a days walk from the town.
Caroline I agree with you but disagree with Cooper. If it was a serial killer, all the locals would get involved to find the killer. If it was a tribe, locals too scared and superstitious, hence no interest in the 30k.

Yeah. Seems obvious to me that they where using the camera flash as an improvised flashlight when they thought they really needed it. That doesn't really mean they were or weren't murdered though.
Well, this aged well 3 years later, and you are basically a super star!!! Im so happy for you!! I have to find at least one of your videos to watch every day. i really enjoyed your content. Keep on the good work!!!
Jungles are notoriously tough to navigate. The dense foliage makes it impossible to see anything in the distance to be able to get bearings on. At night it is dark, incredibly dark. It is also hot and humid and then you have to worry about the residents (the insects and thorny plants being the worst). But they are amazing places. I’ve had a lot of good times camping in the jungle, but I wouldn’t want to go in unprepared.
I saw a thing on TV with a marine who teaches jungle survival, and he said something to the effect that if the jungle is thick enough you might only cover a couple hundred yards in a day. And that's if you're in good shape with the right gear.
I'm so glad I discovered Mr. Ballens stories so late because I've pretty much been binge watching this man. Every story so far has been awesome. Thank you sir.

Mysterious as this case is I've avoided it until recently because it just makes me sad. There's no conceivable theory where these girls didn't feel constant terror & hopelessness to the bitter end & it hurts just thinking about it
I just watched this and i keep thinking about that too. Even if the whole time they actually were lost and or injured before death it still means they were likely terrified. If it had been 4 days that's 4 days of no food or hardly any water. And theyre in a hostile environment thats difficult to navigate. I cant imagine the hopelessness they were feeling. Just really sad.
@@e.starling141 what do you mean by 4 days? they were murdered shortly after they have left the hostel. the police and locals covered it up to avoid bad press. there are hundreds of cases just like this. now days it's practically illegal for the media to write such stories to avoid bad press that would affect tourism.

It's very telling that there were other remains from other people, and that the backpack appeared not to have been out in the elements. Also, the professionally wiped photo. It was attached to a computer and wiped, and that was during a time when the murderer had the backpack. There was definitely foul play involved here. That last picture most likely was the murderer.
Yep. The person or person's probably went back home or to a hostel, wipes that particular photo then went back to distribute the belongings. They covered their tracks well.
@@donniebutler3145 Yeah, that right there, was enough of a proof that this was foul play. Did jungle beasts bring other people's bones at the same place? These girls stumbled across something they shouldn't have and were punished for it.
Seems like an abduction and at the end were brought to the serial killer(s) killing field. The other dead bodies mixed in with theirs definitely suggests a place for killing or dumping.
I’ve made that exact same hike. My parents live in the same city in panama. I was with a local girl when we hiked it. We didn’t make it all the way up. We started hearing strange sounds and decided to turn back. Glad we did now. Sorry to hear about the girls.
Well, you did invite speculation, and so here goes two strong possibilities. A -- The girls were targeted. Probably by someone who encountered them at the Hostel, given that the dog was allowed to go home, when the girls were not. Dogs are social creatures, and it wouldn't have just walked away from them to head on home if it got bored -- not if it had bothered to go with them into the jungle to begin with. They could have followed the dog home safely even if they had gotten lost, if they'd been allowed to, so they most likely were not, and the dog was driven away when the killer took them. Their killer chose them, and chose the time when he could take them carefully -- Foreign travelers, alone or in pairs, give a killer a whole lot of time to muddy the trail before the investigation can begin. Also, jurisdiction is always a clown shower when more than one state department or embassy has to get involved. The girls' choice to take a long hike with no guide is notable as a particularly good opportunity for anyone who knows the local area, who wanted to be sure they'd get a chance to encounter the girls alone. And, assuming their assailant had a firearm, or possibly more than one attacker, getting control of two young women in an environment they don't know well would not be difficult. Scenario the second -- they accidentally wandered into a drug operation. Personally, I feel that is the most likely. Again, the lack of a guide who'd be able to steer them clear of the dangerous territory would have made it entirely possible for them to stumble into a coca or hemp plantation in the highlands, and from there, to be doomed. This scenario has for the girls being kept prisoner for several days, while their captors debate whether ransoming them is worthwhile (as ransom for profit has been an industry in central america for awhile now) but eventually deciding that the risk is too great. It would also account for the other remains found in the area as the inevitable casualties that an illegal drug operation tends to create. I think that nobody in the village spoke up because whoever the predator/perpetrator is, they are very well known, and very deeply feared there, and are so secure in their power that people who have to live there are not willing to risk going against them. Because when certain types of bullies take over a place, everyone knows that no amount of money is worth the risk. I think as for the bones appearing not to have been subject to animal predation, there are a few ways that could be accomplished -- none of them nice. If the bodies were left in a body of water, then fish and crabs could clear the bones without leaving distress marks, and similarly if they were left on an exposed high outcrop, birds could have done the same. Also, the flesh could just have been cooked off the bones, which would then be discarded -- which is horrible, yes, but also you pointed out that the destination of their hike was a volcano, and boiling streams and pools can happen with those. I definitely agree that the girls' disappearance was not a simple case of getting lost and dying from mischance. The dog, the backpack, and the phone records nail that down for me.
@@cattkingsgrave2247 That makes total sense! And also the drug people if knowing these hostile people probably sent the dog back to keep things quiet. So there was no connections to the two of them.
I would always have to try and find something to read in my genre. You definitely filled that spot. I’m all set, you’re a wonderful narrator and story teller.
All the pictures of nothing in the darkness that the girls took, those pictures were an attempt to see by using the flash. They were trying to find their way out of the jungle or trying to avoid harm period. Pitch darkness in the jungle would be such a scary thing. I think they were murdered as well. All of their remains mixed in together with other folks remains, those were just other people that fell victim to whoever killed them as well. Although experienced, the girls never should've attempted to hike an unknown place without a guide or a local to help them along their way. I can't imagine the terror the girls felt in that jungle being lost, or how horrified they were after all of their attempts to contact help were fruitless. Being lost, in the jungle, in the darkness, and then running into a stranger out there in the middle of nowhere, who you ultimately meet your end by, would be absolutely horrific.
Using the flash to see would be a brilliant idea and i agree that’s likely. The many attempts to access the phone may have been the other girl after the first one died or they were separated considering distress calls were made at the same time. I believe they were murdered and the killer looked through the photos and found one that either identified their location or was literally of the killer. So they brought it back to their home/base and wiped it. That couldn’t have been done by a feral person. And rules out a person starved for cash who would’ve sold the belongings. Why they were murdered? Either a serial killer or they saw something they shouldn’t have. A base for drug trafficking? secret government project? There were at least 3 other victims. I have no idea why the killer would give the phones back if they were unable to check it’s contents.
@@Contessa6789 yes I absolutely agree. The government possibly had an operation out there in the jungle or drug traffickers caught them when the girls ran upon their location. Or maybe the government was benefiting from the local traffickers and allowing their operation to prosper and continue whilst they themselves (the government) profited as well.
@@Contessa6789 Yeah that's what i'm thinking. As for giving the phone back with the bag and stuff, it may be as some type of warning that the authorities there would know about but can,t talk about.
What’s strange is that the cab driver, the last person who saw the girls, also died..There was an investigation going on how he died I remember, but never heard anything again from it
The fact anyone in this case claimed that they were killed by animals is insane or shows they are hiding something.. The animals killed them, took off their clothes, folded them into a neat pile and left them in a pile a far distance from where the girls were hiking and not until weeks after their disappearance perfectly dry after it had rained the night before their discovery?
I was here watching when this video came out, and now seeing the channel just exploded from the 120k subscribers to almost 9m it feels well deserved to me! Wish you all the best mr. Ballen!
To speculate, it appears to me that they were hearing something in the shadows and so they were convinced they were being followed or stalked. So they sought to take photographs with the flash on, pointing it towards the darkness where they might have been hearing rustling or whatever. All in a bid to see who or what was following them, but they were consistently unable to get a clear image. When the attacker finally made his move & decided to pounce, they took one last photograph which captured his image. Aware of this, he took the phone and deleted that image permanently. He scrolled through the rest of the 90 pics and saw he wasn't visible, so continued on with his heinous plan
Sounds solid, but Why didn't he just destroy the camera though? The thing with the flash of the camera light also came to my mind and sounds quite logic. Was the camera found in the backpack? In that case, why did the attacker delete one picture and stuffed it back in there? Why make that effort? Would be simplier to just, maybe delete it to be save he is not be seen, and then just toss it anywhere. Unfortunately like all these stories, we will never know for sure.
I’ve always thought unsolved mysteries were interesting and was always wanting to find a person to explain these stories and you were the one to do that and the fact that your a navy seal is also really really cool and the fact you’ve probably inspired so many people to be a badass navy seal or a scary story teller and that’s actually sick!!! I commented something similar on another video of his just a few weeks ago, about how good his storytelling skills are especially in his more recent videos. Especially with the visual aid from photos, his hand movements, expressions, etc, he just really, REALLY fleshes out the fine details on his stories where you can tell he's clearly done his research even with a bit of artistic license with some of the most fine details, to the point you could probably just close your eyes and see the story. It's very impressive (to me, anyway), I'm glad I found his channel, because I do like the "strange, dark and mysterious," heh.
When I first heard about this, I thought they were murdered by an indigenous tribe. But now that you said a photo was permanently deleted, I think someone followed them into the jungle and murdered them.
If I have a daughter, I will share these kinds if stories. Actually, I will let my son know too. Strange and new places be extra careful and go with a guide or better yet a group of tourists. Not as exciting but would rather be safe than adventurous.

I think it is some Sociopath's puzzle, trying to see if he could get caught or not.
The flash was used to navigate in the dark for sure
I thought that too
The deleted picture, which can only, to our knowlegde, be deleted via a software on a computer, must have been taken of the murder - and then taken to the murders computer from which he permanently deleted the picture, and placed the camera in the backpack 5 months later and placed it nicely to be found.
@@MrThaiko I stopped reading at aliens

@@kiki.23. very possible the murder planted the items because they wanted more attention, especially in the media. Very common for serial killers and with multiple bodies found where the girls were, its definitely a possibility.

Scattered bleached bones with no scratches, random pics and one permanent deleted pic. yea these girls were murdered.
One of them had their foot severed, the foot was going in the shoe
Yup
@@lauren9373 That's not uncommon. The shoe protects the foot from decomposing the way the rest of the body does.
@@MrSnicker14 ya but it still wouldn't of been a clean cut. Also the entire backpack situation stinks
The motive was probably rape, not stealing. One of the main suspects is a local guide who has been acting weird with white female tourists for years.

Check out the video by Found Footage Short Film - The Abduction (new theory) for a lot more information
Any explanation or just blowing smoke, like everyone else? Are there tribes in those jungles?
I don't claim to be the expert but here I my theories about the things mentioned:
- Night photos: girls used camera flash to either a) light up the area to see where they are going b) scare away nocturnal animals
- Photo of the back of the head: Perhaps the girl who got injured asked her friend to take a picture to see for herself how bad the wound is
- Multiple attempts to unlock the phone: Maybe one girl died earlier and the surviving one was trying to unblock her phone not knowing the password
- Photos of red cloth and candy wrappers: marking down places along the way to see if they are going in circles and taking a photo to remember.
Yeah, those are the most normal parts though. The permenently deleted photo and other human remains (with no evidence of an animal attack) are really key here.
Good theory
Although there was no animal attack their remains were more likely been scattered by scavengers (the "graveyard" of bones sounds like a lair of such an animal)
They didn't find any big bones, so the leg they found was probably carried away either by animal or a river flow.

Judging by the fact that there were other remains in the area they were found, that screams serial killer.
Or criminal enterprise... drugs or cartel or something. May also explain why the locals stay silent.
Correct, thats what i thought. Or a secret cult.

Goggins has got the best communication skills. WHO'S GOING TO CARRY THE BOATS?
You can't be a Seal team member and not have good communication skills.
The more you go up in rank, you learn how to give a class. You learn real quick how to communicate ideas to like 40+ other "adults" in your early 20s. You learn how to get ideas across and the ability to try to explain the thoughts and concepts in your head. The higher you go as an NCO, you get classes on giving classes. I was a total passive and quiet introvert in my teens and the Marines gave me the communication skills that I use to this day to explain and convey concepts that I would have struggled with had I not had training.
I had to eventually fight and struggle to remove "Fucken" as a verbal tick that was used in place of "like" or "uh", however. Other than that... yeah military sometime talk gud.

My first thought on this story was someone wanted to give up enough evidence to confirm they were dead to get searchers to stop tromping around the area for them because they were disturbing other activities in the region.
Interesting perspective. You can also question why they were not looking for the other people. Which were also found along with the remains of the girls.

Wow yes
Yes, i knew this case already. First thought was they were just simply raped and killed by cartels. That is kind of lawless area. 2 beautiful white girl alone there...sad.
Mr Ballen your story telling skills are exemplary
@@Fullmetal85 I hadn't thought about the organs part but sadly you are probably right...

I don't think it was any tribe. I'm pretty sure it was a serial killer who have murder many others

When a Navy SEAL says its hard terrain, then you gotta believe its true!
Jungles are notoriously tough to navigate. The dense foliage makes it impossible to see anything in the distance to be able to get bearings on. At night it is dark, incredibly dark. It is also hot and humid and then you have to worry about the residents (the insects and thorny plants being the worst).

Very in-depth analysis.
Wow!! Are you a police woman or Detective? If not, you should be!

That was my exact thought too
@@Contessa6789 Yeah that's what i'm thinking. As for giving the phone back with the bag and stuff, it may be as some type of warning that the authorities there would know about but can,t talk about.

I like this theory alot
Sounds solid, but Why didn't he just destroy the camera though?
The thing with the flash of the camera light also came to my mind and sounds quite logic.
Was the camera found in the backpack? In that case, why did the attacker delete one picture and stuffed it back in there?
Why make that effort? Would be simplier to just, maybe delete it to be save he is not be seen, and then just toss it anywhere.
