Hi everyone, and thank you for all the support on the off-hand discussion videos I made. I'll keep this short: It's important to restate that everything I said in my videos and all the others is just my personal opinions and experience I gained from playing osu! over the years. Please do not treat them as gospel or feel like I am trying to "tell you how to play" or whatever. You are welcome to disagree and play the game however you like. I always thought it's better if people come to their own conclusions instead of blindly following what someone says without question. As for why I haven't made more stuff, I've talked about everything I wanted to say in my interview and previous videos. I don't want to milk this channel or repeat things I've already said for "content." I'm also quite out-of-date with how players play nowadays and wouldn't want to misdirect anyone or say stuff that isn't relevant anymore. Still, I'm very grateful for all your support and hope you've taken something from them.
Giving your brain time to rest has a proper name to it: "Long Term Memory". When you study/practice anything, the majority of the improvement is going to surface after a proper rest for your brain. Physical muscles don't have a "memory" but they have similar needs to the brain, requiring rest to rebuild themselves stronger after you have used them.
this is really neat. would love to see more! Do you think you should you still put more time into the things you struggle with, and just not have it be the only thing practice? Or should you not focus on specific skills at all, and have your training regiment be equally spread out?
@@Xilver agreed! yo, i do an interview show on stream and i would loooove to have you on to talk about your improvement theories. would you be interested?
I actually really love this style of video (well audio) as it gives a lot to think about in terms of how certain players handle the game and improvement, hence giving me more perspective and room to improve as a player myself. I can definitely relate a lot to hyper focusing on one certain weakness and basically neglecting everything else. Even for awhile fairly recently, I was definitely guilty of doing such a thing almost out of frustration at how much I felt my weaknesses were hindering me. I definitely don't give rest enough thought, as I think it's really easy to get impatient with growing in certain skillsets, and this audio is a really good way to portray how you should handle your weaknesses and individual growth. I do notice that some players are capable of dedicating entire sessions for extended periods just to a single skill and come out fine, and I really wonder what your thoughts on that are, although that's a different topic for a different time, haha. Thank you for this, it came at quite a good time for me and a few others I know and I will definitely share this around to help some players out. I'd love to see this style in the future, absolutely!
Interesting, you could probably get away with hyperfocusing on a skillset you're bad at for a little while if your baseline skill is high enough, but I think it's a "use it or lose it" situation - eventually the lack of working on other skillsets will catch up to you. Probably alright to do short term for small periods of time, not good as a habit imo.
Wow, I love the way you explained this with having to rest and why focusing on only one skillset for a long time can be detrimental! I myself started out training streaming with those long stream maps since it was recommended to me by a friend who is a pretty good player, but I ended up not being able to aim streams very well at all even though I had the stamina to tap them. I've stopped playing those long ago but I'm glad to have finally realised why that was the case. I think something similar would happen to anyone who plays a lot of those square jump practice maps, as well.
i can't say whether its because of how i go about my sessions or i focused on a speed for a few sessions but i now managed to stream 200 bpm (and fair bpm above if warmed up properly) basically my sessions goes like this practice time is just me going through HR>DT>AR8>EZ then just do whatever, it doesn't follow any set time between them since how long i practice the skill set is entirely dependent on how i was feeling. i would just go through it and move on. this a really slow grind since i spread my time between all the mods rather than focusing and i pretty much notice this when against players in tourneys but hey at least i am not the worst one in every skill set. anyway i digress, i suppose the reason why i managed to stream 200 bpm is because of me going over a lot of finger control types and flow aim all over the place which is indirectly made me able to do it, of course i do play streams but frankly i am not entirely sure if that did it since i don't just go and dedicate a single session for that skill set. anyway, not sure if my case could be an example or it could be opposite, in any case i enjoy doing it.
I agree with the part about giving your brain time to rest - I've personally found that during long play sessions it's easy to go on mindless autopilot, when really you should be practicing only when you can maintain 100% focus (coincidentally i also found this ted talk ua-cam.com/video/f2O6mQkFiiw/v-deo.html the other day which goes over that idea)
I agree with training a variety of skillsets helps improvement more than hyper-focusing on one thing. I would just make a big collection of all sorts of maps that you just f2 spam through and play through to the end. Over time adding more maps and taking FCS out of the collection. At least for me, that's what has been the game-changer.
Even when I realize it I tend to tunnel vision too much on specific stuff i want to improve on. I think it mostly comes from the fact that you want your weaknesses to decrease faster than your strengths getting stronger as you naturally look to be more polished as a player. There is also that unconscious comparison factor when you see x person improve at x skillset faster than you do, you get the expectation it should just go the same way for you if you go hard enough on it but that's really not how it is. I had doubts on whether or not such a training routine not paying off was just because of me but it seems to be the general consensus when hearing this from someone like you. Don't expect results too soon, keep grinding what you mostly want to focus on while always staying in touch with what you already are experimented with. Definitely looking forward for more videos like that
THE XILVER METHOD really happy to see that you are making videos about osu now and wow your voice sounds different to vc, keep this up cuz these ideas are probably very unique on osu youtube so far
i agree with your view on hyperfocusing and i would like to add something, you could very easily compare hyperfocusing to working out too often and not taking breaks at all, with working out, you need to let your muscles rest and rebuild to make them stronger (when you work out you basically "rip" your muscle and you rest in order for it to heal and become stronger), you could say the same about osu skillsets, if you hyperfocus and spend a lot of time playing each day, you would end up "reversing" your skills, as you are not giving your hands/mind any rest from it, the key is moderation, knowing when to stop and knowing for how long you should practice and spend time on the game (i personally play about 1-2 hours max every day or 2 and i feel like im progressing quite well with it)
Balance is definitely the name of the game, not only in osu but in anything. imo the most important trait after luck, and unfortunately you have no control over luck (if u kno how2control luck lmk kthanks) Everyone is somewhat balanced across their skills. There are no players who are cookiezi at one skill and 6 digits at another. The average improvement is the norm and human bodies are relatively similar at the end of the day, meaning it is less and less common to stray farther and farther from that norm. Biologically humans are pretty good at learning skills and I would presume thats why, beyond even learning to play osu at a basic level, the norm at each skill level is what they are now. Expect and aim for your improvement graph to be similar to the balanced average, and if you stray from there, causing "strengths" and "weaknesses" (relative the average player at your skill level, xilvers weaknesses will be much stronger than a 6 digits' strengths), try to stray back to that norm. Not by suddenly jolting your focus to a different path, but by straying your improvement focus not far from *its* norm. (for the phys geeks, if you slowly create a delta in your velocity, make sure to slowly counter by creating a slight delta in your acceleration, and not suddenly doing a 180 with it) On the highway to hell (and id bet quite a few dollars every former #1 osu player would say it is one), make sure not to take many sharp turns, its dangerous out there. Stay safe and try to take care of yourselves
I really enjoyed listening to what you had to say! I kinda want to see your PoV on player mentality and how to deal with plateaus, but yeah! Great audiobook type thing : D
100% down to see more of this type of content! I agree, you got to have time to dwell on your weaknesses, but you can't let them overcome your thoughts either. Nice video man-!
I'm happy to stop hyperfocusing on my weaknesses, but my weakness is technique-based. I'm worried that if I leave it alone, My bad muscle memory is gonna get even worse. (my main problem right now is tapping the right amount on streams and bursts). All I want is consistency but I don't even know where to start without horrible mindblock Btw I loved the video. The style was really calming

Hello, i think you won't see this comment but i have some questions about improve. 1. Im a 6 digit and play maps with star 7-9 so u play all types of skill and can pass it, but im not sure about improving. So when i play low star maps like 5 i can fc them but pp and skill i dont get it too (i think) and i dont now i need play more maps to fc 6 stars or try to play more 7-8* (i like play them more than 5-6*) to have a good score. It was 1-st question. Second is i dont understand i play all maps that i see and song that i like but cant understand one thing now i can beat lots of 5-6 digits but im not sure about the future because icant fc 6-7 star maps and i afraid about 1v1 with good players that can fc them and if i can for example play 10 star better than him but at all another maps he will beat me. So am i need to try fc maps lower than 7-8 stars? It was a second. I think you will answer to this questions. Thank you.

I would say the former. Focusing on one skill over others is fine, I think the problem lies with only focusing on one skillset in a session.
