Video reads Julian was told by FBI he wasn't American, so he couldn't use 1st amendment freedom of press for his defense. Nevertheless, F.B.I then used the same U.S. espionage law against Julian Assange. We'll get through this and both F.B.I and my longtime loyal friend Julian will also survive. Three times, I was charged with espionage, yet all charges were dropped each time 1987-1997 chinese espionage, 1997-2007 israeli espionage, 2007-2017 russian espionage and a book on me banned by good F.B.I. @@wokesickSnowden exposed crimes, which the government committed against its own people and the appeals court later ruled the surveillance programs indeed unlawful. That's called whistleblowing and there are even laws to protect those who do it. When you're persecuted and possibly prosecuted and imprisoned for life for exposing state crimes and corruption, you're living in a criminal state and participating only makes you complicit.

As a non-US Citizen who was NOT in the US and he did not commit a crime in the US...he should not be subject to a US law. The DOJ wanted to charge him for a US crime but they did not want to give him US Constitutional rights.
The same case of Miss Meng Wanzhou of Huawei. Huawei traded with Iran and Uncle Sam didn't like that. Although Miss Meng isn't American citizen and didn't commit any crime in the US, she was arrested in Canada.

Since 1945, as an empire, America has been the world's chief aggressor and committed or supported ghastly atrocities. But even Nazi Germany had at least a minority of decent individuals who resisted that regime - some heroically sacrificing their lives in doing so. Many of Julien Assange's devoted supporters have been American. There are political prisoners who have been incarcerated by the United States for longer than Julien Assange. But, for those who've followed this case for over a decade, there is something almost magical about seeing him finally set free. It's very moving to see Assange embracing his wonderful wife Stella for the first time as a free man and being able now to be a father who will be available to his children full-time - no longer only during cruelly constrictive prison visits. The U.S.A. and British Court wantonly broke and made a mockery of every accepted standard of justice and jurisprudence to ensure that Julien Assange would rot away and die in a prison cell. What was so unexpected was that empire's vengeful beast finally blinked. The most grotesque aspect of the U.S. pursuit of Assange was always the notion that an Act intended only for American citizens accused of espionage could apply to a non-American, while denying him First Amendment rights. I guess even the malignant C.I.A. can't have it's cake and eat it too without choking on it.

Julian would have been freed on appeal to the UK High Court, so the pressure was on the US to agree to the plea deal. Otherwise they would have been completely humiliated.
The whole saga was a vindication that the premise that his actions put lives in danger was rejected by the US Judge on Saipan. So the only charge that could stick was conspiracy, and the precedents were in the system at 5 years jail. So that was the deal. The US wanted gag orders, a mainland US trial and more imprisonment. Thats was roundly rejected.
The Australian PM and Cabinet made it clear to the US that Julian should be freed. That in effect he had spent 14 years confined if you count the time in the Ecuadorian Embassy.
It was Australia's Nelson Mandela moment. It was proved again by Australia that you can stand up to a superpower. When the US tried to apply its laws to overseas people on foreign countries, that has now been rejected.

Because they were going to lose the extradition fight AND now that he pled guilty whether he is or isn't guilty of said crime (he isn't) they will still use the guilty plea to confirm their smears but more importantly to put fear into other journalists who would think of doing what Assane did which was exposing w a r crimes and corruption.

As an American born citizen, it's painful that i have to agree with this. I love my country. My government and "leaders", not so much. This nation's clandestine agencies are responsible for some really horrific acts against humanity for at least several decades now, including our own citizens.

Sadly many stenographers, reporters and would be journalists and editors/producers of corporate media in Australia, and at our once loved ABC & SBS, don't consider Assange a journalist, an ally or a hero. That's because most of our "leading" corporate and ABC hosts and political editors are more comfortable as lapdogs to the powerful and elites than working for truth, justice and equity in our late capitalist system. Was actually telling how many of them were salty about the release of Assange, which is saying a lot because they're just the types to flip colours when the tables are turned.

So they released him for a strategic reason: to avoid a legal challenge that could potentially weaken the espionage act and establish a precedent protecting journalistic activities under the First Amendment.
Convicted Mass Murders in the USA are not treated as harshly as Julian was!

I suspect that the only reason he was freed was that he, and his brand of renegade journalism, is no longer a threat to the powers that be. Either through technological advances or info he provided on Wikileaks methodology. In any case, I'm glad the man is free and kudos to everyone who fought on his behalf.

i love the hypocrisy of the US where they think they can enter another nation and dictate how they live. then there is the matter that people who are neither citizens or residents of the US (and never have been) are supposed to be subject to the laws of the US (what happened to we are bound by the laws of the land in which we live?) then there is the matter of "we will incarcerate you based on this law of our land, but dont even think of claiming the rights extended to human beings in our country because you aren't one of us'. all these US politicians who participated on this attack on Assange should be up on charges themselves.
