  • Julian Assange has finally been freed after over a decade of persecution by the US government for exposing its war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following a plea deal with the US Department of Justice, the WikiLeaks founder was freed from the super-max Belmarsh Prison on Monday, where he was held for over five years battling impending extradition to the US. Kevin Gosztola, the curator of TheDissenter.org newsletter & author of Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange, discusses the global movement to free Assange and why his release is a “major defeat” for the CIA, FBI and Justice Department.

well done to Kevin who covered this tirelessly as well as other whistleblower cases and criminally underrated so thanks Breakthrough News! so happy for Julian's release, gutted about the plea deal that says he's guilty of espionage but! this is a historic victory against the US led empire and its deep states and if only John Pilger could've been alive to see this.

Ouch! I remain the most devoted fan of F.B.I. (really), yet...if...that data is accurate, I see your point. Video reads Julian was told by FBI he wasn't American, so he couldn't use 1st amendment freedom of press for his defense. Nevertheless, F.B.I then used the same U.S. espionage law against Julian Assange. We'll get through this and both F.B.I and my longtime loyal friend Julian will also survive. Three times, I was charged with espionage, yet all charges were dropped each time 1987-1997 chinese espionage, 1997-2007 israeli espionage, 2007-2017 russian espionage and a book on me banned by good F.B.I. I support Julian and F.B.I. interesting video points you make. Good work.

Julian Assange, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his fight for democracy, did not walk free. Instead, he served harsh prison time, despite not breaking any laws in Australia. The US must remove its CIA base in Pine Gap and its military bases in Australia as soon as possible. The presence of US bases in Australia was not a decision made by the Australian people. Australians deserve the right to protect themselves from any form of aggression, including that from the United States. Humanity should continue supporting what Julian Assange stands for human rights, democracy, and a free press. It's heartwarming to see Stella Assange smiling again. Thank you, Kevin Rudd and Anthony Albanese. We must question the rationale behind the US military's presence on Saipan. It seems illogical for a US Federal Court to be located on a Pacific island like Saipan, and the US should withdraw.
"I believe it's important to continue advocating for fair compensation for Julian Assange and his family. They have made significant contributions to benefiting humanity. I want to express my gratitude to Kevin Rudd and Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, for their leadership and commitment to protecting Australian citizens from potential harm."
As Australians, we must reevaluate our support for the US and reconsider our interactions with American tourists, especially in light of the treatment of individuals like Julian Assange. The actions of the American Empire have caused significant harm. It's important to note that Americans conspired to kidnap and kill the great journalist Julian Assange, an Australian citizen, whereas an American citizen, Chelsea Manning, was released.
The criminals who did this to Julian Assange still walk freely and are despicable US assets who harmed millions of people and dismissed them like they didn't matter. Humanity will not rest until we have brought the US to justice for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Humanity needs to consider that the United States government has intervened in 81 elections worldwide since 1950, not including coups that overthrew the government. This history demonstrates that the United States has a history of intervening in the election outcomes of other nations. I am hopeful that Kevin Rudd, Anthony Albanese, and the Australian Labor Party, in addition to the numerous supporters of Julian Assange, can work towards liberating Australia from British influence.

@thespartan101×1 There is never much sense in conflating all a nation's citizenry with their government's actions. The United States' history is a very ugly one. Since 1945, as an empire, America has been the world's chief aggressor and committed or supported ghastly atrocities. But even Nazi Germany had at least a minority of decent individuals who resisted that regime - some heroically sacrificing their lives in doing so. Many of Julien Assange's devoted supporters have been American. So it's best to recognize evil where it resides in the world, but refrain from condemning the least powerful who often curse their own governments as much as outsiders.

What are you talking about? We (the Northern Marianas) are part of the US. We welcome the presence of our military (who have helped us during states of emergency) and we have a US Federal court on our island due to our status as a Commonwealth and a need to try Federal criminal cases on our own soil with our own judges. I can’t speak to the rest of your speech, but if you’re going to talk about a country maybe do some research on their government and people? 😂

There are political prisoners who have been incarcerated by the United States for longer than Julien Assange. But, for those who've followed this case for over a decade, there is something almost magical about seeing him finally set free. It's very moving to see Assange embracing his wonderful wife Stella for the first time as a free man and being able now to be a father who will be available to his children full-time - no longer only during cruelly constrictive prison visits. The U.S.A. and British Court wantonly broke and made a mockery of every accepted standard of justice and jurisprudence to ensure that Julien Assange would rot away and die in a prison cell. What was so unexpected was that empire's vengeful beast finally blinked. The most grotesque aspect of the U.S. pursuit of Assange was always the notion that an Act intended only for American citizens accused of espionage could apply to a non-American, while denying him First Amendment rights. I guess even the malignant C.I.A. can't have it's cake and eat it too without choking on it.

Julian would have been freed on appeal to the UK High Court, so the pressure was on the US to agree to the plea deal. Otherwise they would have been completely humiliated.
The whole saga was a vindication that the premise that his actions put lives in danger was rejected by the US Judge on Saipan. So the only charge that could stick was conspiracy, and the precedents were in the system at 5 years jail. So that was the deal. The US wanted gag orders, a mainland US trial and more imprisonment. Thats was roundly rejected.
The Australian PM and Cabinet made it clear to the US that Julian should be freed. That in effect he had spent 14 years confined if you count the time in the Ecuadorian Embassy.
It was Australia's Nelson Mandela moment. It was proved again by Australia that you can stand up to a superpower. When the US tried to apply its laws to overseas people on foreign countries, that has now been rejected.

Assange is a Hero, as Chelsea, Snowden and others. This a great victory to celebrate, but the battle is far from over.

So they released him for a strategic reason: to avoid a legal challenge that could potentially weaken the espionage act and establish a precedent protecting journalistic activities under the First Amendment.

Shocking that in America 1st amendment rights do not exist for anyone who isn’t an American citizen?
Imagine if every country did this?
Human rights don’t apply to anyone who’s not a citizen of that country?
    INIQUITOUS!

I suspect that the only reason he was freed was that he, and his brand of renegade journalism, is no longer a threat to the powers that be. Either through technological advances or info he provided on Wikileaks methodology. In any case, I'm glad the man is free and kudos to everyone who fought on his behalf.

This is way better than the Russel' Brand show. He posted a vid claiming it contained 'the real reason Assange was freed' and Brand discussed it for 15 mins with some guy looking very pleased with themselves just stating the obvious and revealing nothing.
This host is humble, intelligent and well tempered. He chose a guest with a brain. VS a guest who had some connection within their self serving world of what I call 'Knowledge Supremacy' you see with Brand and most other podcasts, Infowars etc
I never subscribe to anything but I will to this channel.
Hail Hail rock n roll ~`*

Holding Julian Assange any longer will only hurt the image of the most powerful nation on Earth. After all, the U.S. seemed content that Assange has been under house arrest and in jail for a total of 12 years and they hope that his release would somehow improve the American standing in the world. Daydreaming, that is.

i love the hypocrisy of the US where they think they can enter another nation and dictate how they live. then there is the matter that people who are neither citizens or residents of the US (and never have been) are supposed to be subject to the laws of the US (what happened to we are bound by the laws of the land in which we live?) then there is the matter of "we will incarcerate you based on this law of our land, but dont even think of claiming the rights extended to human beings in our country because you aren't one of us'. all these US politicians who participated on this attack on Assange should be up on charges themselves.

Thank you Julian Assange. Your righteousness, selfless, sacrifice, to name a few, have won our admiration and gratitude. At least what you have done have exposed the evil deeds of US. "In God We trust" is a big mockery on God and He shall end the wicked country and it's allies to lesser countries. May the righteous countries arise to more prosperous ones.
