Nice tour of the town! Blue Rapids had two railroads, the UP and MP both went SE to Irving then the UP went to Manhattan and the MP went through Bigelow and Barrett to Frankfort. The old depot used to sit at the lumberyard. The Marshall County Railroad Historical Society using the old MP tracks wanted to move the depot, but it was so rotten it was torn down instead. The museum looks like a former bank
Ahh! The beautiful little town I grew up in!! Thanks for this video. So many memories and changes. The Square outside the circle was once full of buildings. Some were lost to fire when I was growing up. The museum is a great addition that the community works hard to update. My family ran the Blue Valley Cafe for many years (back in the 80’s & 90’s)
Oh I went to school and lived with my grandma in Blue Rapids! I loved it there. It was so much fun, the country surrounding that small town was beautiful. Some of the best memories that lasted a lifetime. Everything was good so different than where I was originally from. Which is Valley Center ks. There's another place called Redbud Acres not to far away off of Tuttle Creek you ought to check out also. I really loved this one thanks.
Blue Rapids is on the Big Blue river flood plain and always struck me as a unique town, either driving south from Marysville into the town, or entering the town from Manhattan. Both are scenic Flint HIlls drives, and then you enter Blue Rapids. One of the Prairie Jewels of Kansas! Thanks for the share!
Great video of one of the nice little towns of Marshall County. So much history in this area. And the museum is a jewel in itself! Blue Rapids is also home to the Marshall County Fair and they do a phenomenal job of hosting. Can’t wait to see your videos of the area ghost towns. Safe travels Coach!
I have learnt a lot about America watching these videos. More than I would have learnt if I had of gone to America for a month because we would’ve just gone to the major centres not seen but I think are the most important parts of the country. Cheers from 🇦🇺
I love the fact that you found another wonderful small town where the home folks have done such a great job of preserving their town. The buildings, other points of interest, and their history they have maintained so well. I enjoy all of your videos, but those poor little communities that are crumbling away really pull at my heart. Having several of these small communities surrounding the farm I grew up on, I got to see them full of life and businesses. It is hard to of seen them die out.
How cool I get to wake up to your new video. I admit I was hopeful for another over hour video. I watch an hour and a half of the Flintstones on Monday. Might as well have a 1/2 hour of your journey.
@TravelwithaWiseguy I love my Flintstones 😆 🤣. I'm a caregiver who has been taking care of two particular clients. Society says not to get attached. You try doing personal things for those in need. If you have a heart, you become attached like family. Thus, the Flintstones an escape from reality. Was my favorite cartoon as a child still love the Flintstones as an adult. I also dated myself. 😆. I look forward to more videos and your journeys. The dog and I try to find old ghost towns nearby, but you need a 4x4 to get to them. I have a mustang some 4x4 and not allowed on dirt roads period. We settled for Golden oregon, about a half hour where we live. If you ever come this way, you may look into the ghost town. The town nearby Wolf Creek is close by and is supposedly haunted by a vampire. You may find it interesting. Otherwise, the dog and I settle for local historic places nearby that allow dogs. I'm interested in old ghost towns and anything historic from the Wild West days. I look forward to two years when I retire to see all the ghost towns of Nevada hopeful to start in Goldfield. Have a wonderful weekend. I look forward to your next video and The Flintstones.
In 2001, I hired a woman who grew up in Blue Rapids who told me that she would ride on the Democratic Party float her dad would create every year for the (I think) 4th of July parade. He was the party chairman. They took a lot of good natured ribbing in those days, she said, as they didn't know many other Democrats.
I noticed the limestone constructed buildings there. Very nice. The architecture is phenomenal. They look simply beautiful. Do I sense Marshall County ghost town videos on the horizon? Thanks again Coach, for another great video.
Hey Coach. A lot of sports history there. The glacier info.is a subject, as a glacier moving through Connecticut created Long Island, I'm interested in. I saw some nice bacon walking in the out takes.
That museum alone is a great reason to head up there (and the diaries - priceless). Thank you for another great video, and congratulations on 30k subs!!
I’m really impressed with their mural, very eye catching. Did you have a chance to read the 1878 diary? I’m so curious, what great finds. Who would have thought that little town had such an interesting history, especially the baseball history. What a shocker, lol, to borrow a familiar word.
Another fine educational and entertaining video. I’ve been in Blue Rapids many times but never heard about the major league game played there. When we lived in Manhattan Kansas back in the 1970’s I had a friend who grew up in Irving, which was located just a short distance southeast of Blue Rapids and was one of the towns displaced by the Tuttle Creek reservoir project in the 1960’s. When we went hunting on the north end of the reservoir wildlife area he would take me to Irving to see where he had lived. At that time you could still see the street layout and some foundations even though they were mostly obscured by the trees that had grown up around them. There was a memorial stone monument with the name Irving on it much like you would see at a cemetery. Beside the monument was a single rural mailbox on a post next to the monument waiting as if to receive mail for the remaining souls of the town. I don’t know if the monument or mailbox survived the flood of 1993. I have not been there in many years.
Irrespective of politics, Blue Rapids has to be one of the best small towns you have visited John! It looks like everyone cares about the place, about it's tidy and clean streets, the baseball ground or the railway station. It instils pride in your place when it looks as good as this and a little pride about your village, town or city is a wonderful thing indeed. If I was a younger man I could gladly up sticks, fly across the pond and live in a place like this. Thank you so much for showing it to us.... it's good for the 'heart'.
Great video! Some fun facts from someone who grew up there... For a small town, it actually use to have two business districts; one along the river (flooded out) and the remaining downtown area. At one point, it was known as "Little Chicago", as it was a rough town with "more bars than churches". One thing I'm surprised the video doesn't mention is the gypsum mine / plant just outside of town. We have the world's purest gypsum.
The Greenwood Cemetery (south of Blue Rapids on 8th rd) contains the graves of an early aviatrix (Ruth Alexander or Ruth Elliott) and the officer that led the opening charge of WW 1 for America (Milton Drumm). They are buried very close together. Also the ghost town of Irving (SE of Blue Rapids) is the town that the fictional character Dorthy Gale (Wizard of Oz) grew up in.
Actually, no town was ever mentioned in The Wizard of Oz. Liberty, KS claims to be her town, but Wamego has a pretty strong case for it with their Wizard of Oz museum.
@@RustyHinge Check out the Wikipedia page for Irving, KS and look under "notable people" or "see also". L Frank Baum got the inspiration to base "The Wizard of Oz" in Kansas due to Irving being hit by two separate tornadoes on the same day.
Onaga is my home town in potawatomi county Westmoreland is the county seat and it got hit by a tornado in May I believe. See it from my sister's house in Wamego
What a well kept small burg. Loved all the cut stone building. Those were classic. A library in operation since 1878. It was a very fun video, Especially the porcine parade.
Miss that town man. Remember meeting up with my friends at that hardware store. Actually got my first kiss on the right side where that little building thing is😂
Just watched the video about Blue Rapids. Very interesting. Pretty there and quite a history. Looking forward to what you come up with in your next video.
Elephant in the room question. Which church was playing the lovely bell music after it chimed? I LOVE that kind of neighborhood town music. I lived in an old neighborhood where the church bells would chime throughout the day on the hour and I would count the "bongs" to see if it was correct, lol. But their church never played lovely music afterward on the chimes. (It was the same neighborhood Bing Crosby was born in, btw, I wonder if that inspired him to do "The Bells of St Mary" because it was a Catholic Church) Also, I am now in love with Blue Rapids, Kansas. I have to tell my friend who lives in Salina to go visit there. In addition, the curator of that museum has a total UA-cam channel on her hands if she would just read those diaries!
That's coming from the PC(USA) Presbyterian Church in town. My wife is the pastor and we live right next to the church so I actually had to pause the video to figure out if it was the video or the actual bells that I was hearing. It's the wrong time for them to go off (as I watch this) so I was confused for a second. You can see the church at 4:25
One more comment, I looked at your map and noticed that you have not made a video of Goodland, Kansas. We have visited this town while going down I70. Very neat town and it had a good restaurant when we were there.
Awesome video. Thanks for the emphasis on the bell at the FD. If you ever make it to Waller County, Tx., I believe you will find a lot to see. Or a neighboring county, Austin County. We work in Waller County and live in Austin County.
I liked this video, John, as it was very enjoyable to see. The sunflower mural and another one were beautiful. Yesterday I wanted to know what town you had visited and Google came up with a town called St Marys, Ks. Turns out it is located south of Marshall County in Pottawatomie County. Seems it was a place where settlers stopped on their way on the Oregon trail to rest or if needed repairs. It also was a stop for the Pony Express. There's a campground you can use. It had a video where some gentleman talked about the town similar to your videos. It was interesting but I liked Blue Rapids better. Oh shoot both were interesting. I do hope you'll have your Alaska adventure video soon and that you got home ok. Happy trails to you and God bless.
Thank You for this Video and the one you did on Wymore NB. I live near Marysville KS witch sets between B.R. And Wymore I hope you had time on you way thru to film it and will do a Video on it. jb
The bells sound like the campanile in Lawrence ks on the KU campus. Lovely concerts near the football stadium. I’ve been in Blue Rapids several times. Nice town.
Great video as usual. The only thing missing was the "Death go Round". The small town in Oklahoma I grew up in has about the same population now. However, its old buildings are either gone or in much worse shape. Civic pride? I also noticed the RCA sign. My career has been in electronics. Back when I started in the early 1970s, RCA was the big dog of electronics companies. Now it is long defunct and anything labeled "RCA" is made by a company in the far east. Things change.
What a beautiful town to visit. Any idea if the stone we’re seeing (on several buildings) is post rock? Whatever it is, it’s pretty. Thanks for the video Coach!
The town just to the west is Waterville. Waterville KS is a town with a horrible government that doesn't give a hoot about the town. It's nothing but a dump with no services other than industrial businesses in their "downtown" area. I say this because these two towns merge to share what is called Valley Heights jr sr high.
