Wow great video. So many helpful things in it. I wish someone had mentioned about the contribuinte to me earlier. I knew to listen for saco but was listening for NIF and never heard it so I always looked like an idiot at the checkout. Some other things that would be good to know: What are the social rules around splitting a bill in Portugal and how do you tell the server? How do you say in a store that you are just looking or browsing and don’t need help yet when they ask you if you need help?
It must have been similar to my confusion when I got asked for cash back. As in, I just paid you, why would I need to get cash back?!! Usually, if you're among friends and it has been decided, agreed, then the bill can be split. You can just say "Vamos dividir a conta." To say you're just browsing, a simple "Obrigada, estou só a ver" is enough.
Thanks for posting Catarina! Thanks to your help, I'm starting to fall into short, humorous introductory conversations with people I bump into. Grocery, restaurant, you name it, through trial and error I'm figuring out which phrases work most often.
Such a helpful video! I've lived here for about 5 weeks & navigating shopping has been quite the learning experience! The thing that most tripped me up was them asking if I want bags, what kind, etc -- which I keep forgetting in my car! Yesterday I said "no" & the clerk gave me a funny look. I was proud that I knew enough to explain (badly but enough to be understood) that I forgot them in my car & I'd bag my groceries in the parking lot. Also the first time I ordered fast food I was not prepared for the question "just the sandwich or do you want the meal?" and was so confused! (I'm prepared for next time now tho!)
Ah, I forgot to mention the bag! Those situations are never pleasant when you're still learning the language, but the embarassment works as a "I'll never forget that" kind of lesson 😉
What other situations have surprised you in Portugal? Is there anything else particularly "weird" I forgot to bring up?

Exactly! Trial and error.
