Roblox, are community is great at making game's, and we are good at ruining it
Roblox had VR support way before Rec Room was released. It's just that there weren't that many people experimenting with it since when it first released there was only oculus rift support.
They've been slowly getting updates out with compatibility with other headsets. The most recent update being an overhaul of how the VR system works alltogether.
its almost as if roblox's engine was extremely limited especially vr wise. not to mention the shady shit happening behind the games

Nah. Roblox started VR oculus rift support in april 2016, Rec Room released in the same year few month before roblox started VR support. But probably roblox didnt even know about Rec Room in that time.

I’ve tried this before, I personally would prefer if there was an option to use just the trigger/grip to make portals, rather than having to switch between the two colors with two buttons.
You use the trigger to make the portal.
You do use the trigger but you have to hold it for a sec instead of just pulling it which is a bit annoying.

Probably one of the most impressive parts of this is the seamless level loading, you basically can't tell at all other than a lighting change that there was a load trigger.
When I played the game the portals had depth. And It was before this video was uploaded. Maybe you didint notice since roblox makes portals look low quality up close? Also the game wasn't made specifiaclly for VR so a lot of small things you would expect from a VR game aren't there. (like the portal gun being your right hand without actually having the portal gun yet)
Edit: The portals do infact render two seperate images for the portal it's just the roblox engine making the portal low quality that makes it look slightly 2D.
Edit2: This game was in fact **mostly** made by a **Single Person** the first chapter was in development for well over 3 years now. (a smaller demo being released for a short period of time a year ago without VR support and a prototype sandbox 2 years ago)

Depth is there when playing in non-VR, when you play in VR, it does have some issues... Wonder if it's fixable. Also wondering if it's possible to make it so the Portals render exactly like the normal game. Incredible experience though

@@Grefuzzle why wouldn't you. Seriously, 6 years on this platform and even I agree with this man. The lawsuits, site breaking bugs, and shady business tactics made me ditch the place. It's nice to know that there are still real talented creators out there who make stuff just to make stuff on roblox, i want to see that more.

I’m a creator in rec room and we are starting to create a Portal campaign very soon. We’ll do our best to make it feel as close to Portal as possible and include our own new mechanics, music, and story
Too bad rec room never shows good games and only shows trends and copied games in the ads no one like me would want to play that cause they only show among us memes and octopus Video games and poppy playtime and FNAF I played a laser tag game and it was very fun and now no one plays it and it’s dead cause they don’t advertise games like it that’s so bad rec room literally sucks so bad

I remember playing around with a Portal map in RR and creating my own map with a template they provided.
Also it's not really a dead game. Yeah the ads are trash, but there's still a ton of active players.

Fun Fact : The game was actually out 1 or 2 years ago ! But it was in testing mode. Tho it still had the same portal texture , same character and same white zone (the one that you place portals on).

5:10 how portals work in VR (atleast this game) doesn't let you stick your hand n stuff. it can catch physics object movement and specific animations (player jumping, door opening and stuff like that) how it works is simple: place a dynamic and invisible camera rigth at the portals position but it breaks the ligth script so it looks weird you still can interact with the other side by picking cubes and stuff like that. Also Another thing is until your position and camera passes through it doesn't teleport you, also it make the position of the portal touches no collide mechnic. Another thing about camera: it rotates depending on your position so it gives the effect that it is really gives the effect of a real portal and ONE GOD DAMN PERSON IS DOING ALL OF THESE

I haven't played any Roblox games in several years just because I had other things get in the way, I got back into Minecraft, and when I revisited Roblox it was nothing but microtransaction. But this!!! This is the best thing I have ever seen on Roblox in well over a decade!
I think they were going for a more utilitarian, industrial feel with the map design, while at the same time being sleek and smooth like aperture

Hi Dorainn, i am not a professional nor am i a worker/developer of the game of Tunneler, but just as a quick heads up, they actually have a testing game for portal obbies, a multiplayer game for the latter, and they even have a Doomspire Brick Battle game made with a fairly compatible device, they even got custom portal skins (red, pink, blue, green, yellow, etc), and in one map they got an actual turret that works to shoot humans, although its not sensor, but you gotta hold left click.
fun fact: roblox vr has actually been out for many years, before rec room started getting as popular as it is
side fact: roblox VR was actually officially released 2 months before rec room was, all the way back in 2016

The turning is how you turn in Roblox and many other games. It's default and I don't think Roblox 'experience' developers can change that to make turning custom.

Its insane that they got portals that you can look through working at ALL in roblox. That alone is impressive, and I didn't know it was even possible.
That was actually a discovery made by a player named EgoMoose in 2019. If you find this kind of stuff cool, check out ego moose and their creations.

@@mrbeince8k303 You can't actually sadly, this is using viewport frames(which are those crappy gui things that "render" a model you put in it, but the "render" is in terrible lighting that is literally worse than their original 2006 lighting tech), which are in surfaceguis on parts and have an entire clone of the chamber inside them, then using black magic math from egomoose a pretty good depth effect is achieved but because of viewport frame's limitations it is blurry/pixilated up close and it only "renders" once at the center of your view so it's depth is off in VR.

It was good, but for me, you were a huge lighting glitch in VR which was annoying like everything was dark I turned some things off in settings to make it a bit brighter
the developer of the game made a ton of games based around those portals and the portal gun including Doomspire Brickbattle with portals and VR mode doesnt really have a VR model ingame with moveable hands that can stick through a portal
Painful part in the normal version is that everytime you go into the orange portal you fall into the void
I was gonna call this lame, because it was kinda knock-off-y, but then they literally said "Don't compare this with the aperture gun" and I was like ok, it's a blatant rip-off, which made made me a lot happier about trying it

The portal is not a flat image, it may look like it because you have your graphics on automatic I think, if you play it on pc it looks less like a flat image, probably because there’s no smooth turning on what setting ur playing in vr you can’t see the portal from other angles.

I remember seeing a test demo in Roblox for something very similar but the portals you wouldn't be teleported to every side you would actually go through them like you could stand in between the portals it was really cool and it wasn't disorienting I don't remember the name of the demo but I'm sure if you search up portal you'd find it at some point
I remember playing it as well! I think there also was a multiplayer version of it. For a playground it was really fucking good!

Roblox had VR support since 2015. They just recently allowed people to add propper VR support for their games. Basicly for the longest time VR support was bad and still is in games that don't have proper VR support.

I was an early adopter of the HL and subsequent Portal franchise, it's 2022 and I have no idea what either Roblox or Wreck Room are. I've heard the name Roblox being thrown around in kids' birthday parties along with the new wave of Minecraft fans. But I didn't know it had a following among adults.

i hope one day they can code the portals in a way that it shows whats behind the portal in the correct way. like the right point of views for each eye. that would be incredible. im sure thats easily in the realm of possibility. i mean they can do it with one point of view so i suppose doing it with both eyes is pretty simple.
It's not that simple in Roblox.
Sadly not, speaking as a developer(scripter) on Roblox: they provide absolutely nothing for separate views, the portal is a UI being projected onto a part that has an entire clone of the map in it, because Roblox won't give actual viewports or major features from other engines, even Roblox's coding is designed for children.
The only way this would be possible is doing some extreme black magic to actually place another clone of the chamber behind a portal shaped hole.

@@theshadowfox3554 it don't use clone of the map it project bunch raycasts that gets the color of the map and makes it a flat image on the portal but sadly it can't get if the part has shadow or not thats why the lighting looks messed up, also the resolution of the portal looks bad if u get close

Since links can't be posted here, just go ahead and Google "Roblox devforum re-creating a portal effect", scroll past the videos and it should be the first devforum post WITH THAT NAME, the comments clearly describe the real technique Tunneler uses, I recognize egomoose's technique when I see it.
As for your comment, Roblox doesn't give us shader API, so we can't raycast on the GPU for the portal, meaning we would have to do what you think on the cpu, and raycasting that much on the cpu every frame would lag the hell out of the game. Also, we can't make images in real time on Roblox, there are website apis to get profile pictures but nothing for creating an image in-game. Finally, your justification that getting if a part has a shadow is impossible , is flat out false, it's trivially easy: CastShadow is a boolean property that every basePart (wedge, sphere, square, mesh, union, everything) has, describing whether shadows from the sun are cast and whether it blocks light in future lighting mode. I'm experienced in coding with Roblox LuaU, you clearly are not, know what you're talking about before trying to correct someone.

What texture quality did you have on? Because it looked pretty low compared to what you can do.
I honestly have no idea lol. I just downloaded Roblox and immediately started playing so it could've defaulted to the lowest settings.
@@Dorainn it uses 1-10 graphics settings with 1 being lowest and 10 being highest, pretty sure it automatically sets to 5 and you only start getting the pretty things with lighting and stuff at level 8
