12:45 correction: this is the same thing he says in the normal ending but with the word "too" (or slangwise: "very"). Basically, instead of "good job", he says "REALLY good job".
Thank you for the correction! I played the NES English translation which outright changes that to "Amazing!" so I did not provide that context to Sasha like I should have. Will be wary of that sort of thing in future.
@@_connorsseur To be fair, I probably wouldn't have thought to send the original ending in Japanese either. Doing this kind of coverage without knowing the moonrunes personally is always a tricky task. "Amazing!" is literally correct, though I'm not sure it exactly nails Kitano's tone (even just dropping the exclamation mark would've been better on their part). Not a big deal either way, though. In a hypothetical recut I would just say something like _"Really_ amazing!" to incorporate this. And of course, make sure the viewer gets to see the original line beforehand.
Also, my guess is that the joke of calling it "POKER" tower is that in Japan, a common term for "playing card" is "trump" (check it yourself on Google translate) and "poker" is another card-related term. So when the president at the top asks "Are you Poker's ally?" he more likely means "are you my ally?", because he's probably meant to be Mr. Poker.
Oh my gosh, you're right! Thank you for the tip! I totally forgot to see if the right edge of the screen was an invisible door. I'll get the text translated and see if there's any more to it. I swear if I have to go there as donal trumps 😭
Now I'm really wondering how the changes were made. It's probably some combination of a custom hacked emulator and changes made to the game using the original source code, which I guess they might still have? Because adding a whole new area would be super difficult without source code (and even with source code it's not exactly a weekend project). A lot of effort must have gone into it, which is really weird.
It did get announced a year before it's release, so I imagine they spent a fair amount of time on it. It was made by taito so in theory they should have the source code, but with how the game plays I'd agree with it being some kind of custom hacked emulator. Who knows if the source code was still around so many years later. But yeah it's weirdly high effort for something so niche. Which I can relate to haha.
@@duuqnd Not necessarily; they may have intentionally done that specifically to screw you over, which is totally a thing that Beat Takeshi would have done.
@@KainYusanagi That's true, but Takeshi wasn't involved in the port. And it's not really all that funny as a prank to pull on the player, it just looks sloppy, like it's something the project lead or whoever demanded but wasn't really feasible. In fact, I'm almost certain I know exactly how the widescreen hack was implemented, and if I'm right then it probably made creating the new areas a lot easier. On the other hand, the hang glider stage's hard mode looks a bit strange for the NES... I almost want to try to get a copy of the game just to figure out how this works.
I had a thought, dunno if you still read these comments but an interesting idea. Since in one video you posed the idea that the shamisen is supposed to be required, but isn’t, have you tried talking to the other sage? Specifically, play the shamisen for the native chief, then enter a house. Take the warp to the resort, then in the hang gliding section land on the third island, the one with the sage that doesn’t say anything. It probably won’t do anything, but my guess is that perhaps the “played the shamisen” trigger was tied to the wrong NPC?
Interesting thought, but I think if it is a bug it's simpler than that. My assumption is it runs the check for the sage canteen before the boiling pot event, so it overrides the need for the shamisen as long as you don't reactivate the event
I know I was too late at this point, but instead of changing your apple id region, you could've just made a new email and apple id with region set to Japan. That's what I did to play some Japanese only games on the iPhone while simultaneously keep using my main apple id most of the time, and when an app needs updating, you'll be asked to enter the password of the account you're downloading said app with if at the time you're logged in to your main account instead. Would've saved a lot of headaches you got by changing your main account region.
Using my main ID was actually not the worst idea. I was just a fool and someone pointed this out to me in the comments. I can switch back to the USA region and still play the game after downloading it. The only issue with region locking is downloading the games to begin with, after all. But thanks for the idea! I may try it if I ever cover another international mobile port of something. ...for some reason.
When I do the bundle/megacut version of the series I'll slide it in with the JonTron stuff. Probably use it to point out "you can be funny *and* accurate, these things aren't mutually exclusive." or something
@@_connorsseur I'm sure that if you went to a romhacking site like GBATemp and explain the situation, you could find someone who would help. This really feels like something that *needs* to be preserved (and translated!), and you may literally be the only English-speaking person in a position to make it happen.

This series was fantastic! I learn way more about this weird ass game than I ever thought possible lol
Same lol. Never expected to know the ins and outs of this game much older than myself
much MUCH respect for all the effort you put into this series, great videos, learned a lot from them, thanks for making them

This series was really good
It's most likely just a patched rom, and it's sitting somewhere in your phone's storage. All you have to do is find it, and upload it.

My not serious critique: No mention of Videogamedunkey's video on this game

Lol sorry I'll make sure the wait isn't as long for any future premieres. The anticipation is killing me too!
Now I know what JonTron's next video is gonna be!
Ok now find a way to dump the rom so more people can have that version of it with the micro transactions
Sorry, I'm a bit too technologically inept for that sort of thing!
