  • Have you ever seen Heinrich's Safety Pyramid of accidents and incidents? It's very well-known in workplace safety, but did you know it was created in the 1930's? How does a safety pyramid, created that long ago, stack up today?

In this video, we look at Heinrich's accident and incident safety pyramid and compare it to what the safety community of today believes about its accuracy.
Heinrich’s safety pyramid was first released in his book Industrial Accident Prevention: A Scientific Approach.
Fundamentally, the safety pyramid illustrates the theory that focussing on near misses and first aid incidents (bottom of the safety pyramid) leads to a reduction of fatalities and lost time injuries (top of the pyramid).
But does this safety pyramid represent reality?

One thing that is important to note about Heinrich's approach is that the top of his pyramid, what he called serious injuries, today would be what we call an OSHA Recordable. Heinrich was an insurance guy looking for ways to reduce claims. If an employee cut his finger and received 3 stitches Heinrich put that injury at the top of his pyramid, because it was a financial loss. Over time well meaning safety professionals trying to eliminate fatalities and disabling injuries incorrectly assumed that eliminating unsafe behaviors would eliminate fatalities. In other words Heinrich's data was used in ways it was never intended. Today as pointed out in the video not all unsafe acts have a potential to be a serious injury or fatality, so a new approach to preventing fatalities and disabling injuries is just now emerging. Great Video!

Yes, you're right. I didn't know William Herbert Heinrich until today. =) At some point he is right with his theory and had a big impact in the Industrial safety but due to innovations and technology, over time, it can only be used as a guide.
