Thank you for this ‘behind the scenes' video about your book. I’ll look forward to reading it. It’s fascinating that people’s tastes vary so much. I am reading my way through George Eliot and found Middlemarch and Adam Bede brilliant. Jane Austen is my favourite author. I am less enthusiastic about Elizabeth Gaskell but was very moved by North and South. So much to discover in 19th Century fiction 😀

An interesting video - delighted to hear what influenced Mrs Montgomery Hurst (and creating your own county means that you can set as many books as you like there. They don't need to be sequels. If Barbara Pym can have reoccurring characters, I'm sure that you would manage it rather stupendously.) Your book is certainly funny - the way you describe characters in so few words in the first chapter had me chuckling, and was also very astute.

Since I’ve enjoyed many of the books that inspired your new novel, I know I will love it too! Katie, you’ve given credit where it’s due; everyone borrows from their predecessors, adding adornment to the edifice.

Thank you for recommending Blackwells as I live in the US. I’ve preordered it and looking forward to reading it and finding the nods to these wonderful classics. Perfect for Jane Austen July. 😊

It sounds so interesting and also fun that your books also offer us a conversation with other books. And woooooow, your characters discuss Jane Austen! That's fun! Can't wait to read it!

I am even more intrigued about your novel! I love Cranford, and of course Jane Austen, and though I am not a big George Eliot fan either, enjoyed Middlemarch. I also love Anthony Trollope. This was very interesting, hearing about your various influences. I am eagerly awaiting my copy from Blackwells.

I realised that this would be inspired by 19th century novels and I had heard you mention Austen was an influence, but I am even more excited to know Cranford and the Barsetshire Chronicles are so key as I love them with a passion. Of course I smiled to hear Eliot snuck in there.

This is making me really want to get into Trollope as I've read the other main authors mentioned. I remember immediately thinking Cranford when you gave us a synopsis. Can't wait for my copy to arrive.

I'm saving my next Audible credit for your new novel! I liked your first novel a lot but I think I'm going to love this one 😃 I particularly love Gaskell, Trollope and Austen and I loved Deerbrook too.
If you do that spoilery Q&A, I'd love to learn which Trollope are you refering to in this video 😆

The problem is, even if I'm allowing Monty spoilers, I worry it would spoil the Trollope novel, too . . . I'll have a think if there's any way I can do it. I think once you've read the novel, if you've read the Anthony Trollope novel, you would probably make the connection.

I am so glad that you have finished and published two novels. Many of us struggle even to finish one. Amazon I believe is sending it to me on release day, so likely I'll finish it before Summer ends - looking forward to it. Congrats!!

It definitely made me think of Austen (of course) and Gaskell, particularly the class aspects and the humour. I’ve never read Trollope and this now makes me want to pick up his work. Funny to hear about the George Elliot influence. Thanks for sharing Katie - looking forward to more videos on this as I loved it!

I love this! I've always been sort of fascinated by the idea of sculpting new books from the bones of old books. I'm very keen to read the new book, I may have to order it internationally.

I am so looking forward to receiving the book on publication day and have it included in my JAJ tbr! I love so many of the influences you mention and also adore reading about readers too. Many congratulations and have learnt my lesson of not setting too ambitious a tbr this year and it has helped me enjoy my reading much more. I feel I always try to read more rather than focus on a few and get the most out of them. The last remnant of my Tye A personality that still exists at my advanced age!

I am sooo excited!! And love that you did this video for both books so cool to hear your inspirations and really making me want to read Wives and Daughters and get back Anthony Trollope. I finished Barsetshire books last year and I'm just so in love. I think of them so often. My next book is Phineas Redux but I'm also eager to read his smaller novels.

I think that I will love it too - it sounds really good. I LOVE Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell and Anthony Trollope. I prefer a novel that is not so much about romance, so I am hoping that will be the case! I have mine on pre-order but have to wait until October to have the paperback here in NZ (book coming from Australia).

So, there are quite a few love story elements/threads in The Trouble with Mrs Montgomery Hurst, but it is definitely not a romance/romance focused.

I suspect you're just being modest, Katie. We all are influenced by what we've read. How can we not be?
But you've gained a fanbase here and will chum in readers by what YOU bring to the table, by the Katie Lumsden we see and listen to, and to the composition and editing talents you've brought to the task. Your variations on familiar themes will make this book sink or swim. I hope it floats far down the river.

I loved Wives and Daughters and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I also liked Cranford but found it overly gossipy, so I’m very curious to read your take on all that village life! Good luck on Thursday!

How do you compose and play variations on a theme? Something you love you further explore, extend, expand, or continue. You bring yourself to the party. I hope you dance.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  2 місяці тому +1

Exactly - and I'm not really trying to emulate, anyway, more just write in conversation with or think about what inspires me and prompts my own ideas.
