What you are missing is the increasing size of government. The NYT ought to do a survey of the political affiliating of government workers. My take as a previous government worker for the state of California, the county of Los Angeles, and the county of Ventura, almost all government workers are democrats. I would speculate that the majority of Federal government employees are Democrats. This is becoming a cultural war between government workers and the rest of us.
95% of Federal Government workers who donated money to the parties donated to the Democratic party. It is just logical for them-the Dems are for bigger government, increasing Federal Government worker's opportunities.

You would be right. Surveys have been done, and 80-90% of federal workers who have donated to political parties have donated to the Democratic party. (If you donate more than about $50 [don't quote me on that number] to a political party you have to reveal who you work for)
