Everything functions properly ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of UA-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. Call me crazy, but the Giant Talon 4 at $500 still has that narrow-range 14-28 freewheel you see on $70 big box bikes... WHY?? That's just egregious cost-cutting at that price. They didn't pull that crap on the 2020 model, and they don't appear to do that in at least 8 other countries, FWICT.
It makes sense to cut corners somewhere to meet a price target, and I fully expect it, for instance, with the fork, but there are some concessions that just shouldn't be made. Personally, I consider it criminal for any new mtn bike over $350 not to have a cassette (e-bikes notwithstanding). The bare minimum they could do would be a megarange freewheel instead of that narrow 14-28. They don't even cost more. That, too, the Talon 3 as an in-between option for 2021 exists in other countries, but not in the U.S. I mean, prices throughout the market climbed quite a bit this year because of supply shortages, but also because of the tariffs. To me, the level of cost-cutting exclusive to the U.S. only makes sense if you assume that Giant - being a Chinese manufacturer - is subject to the Trump tariffs to a greater degree than many others.
Yeah I agree with you on that freewheel. Especially since it is buried in the information. It says it has a cassette which isn’t true if it’s a freewheel. Only after you look up the cassette model number do you find out. Poor job by Giant there.
So me being 5'7", I assume 27.5 inch tires would be more nimble then 29inch tires? also does fatter tires mean less nimble. Do you recommend fatter tires.
I would probably lean toward 27.5” tires. Wider tires will be heavier and a bit less nimble. At the same time they will be grippier and more forgiving. All in all, the difference won’t be huge and if you haven’t ridden in a while you will get used to whatever you get pretty quickly.
@@downtoridemtb PS do you know anything about the Diamondback Mason. Its like $530 off on their website (down from $1060). Which seems like it might be a good value?
@@photoshop-one-zero-one seems good at that sale price. Those 3.0” wide tires are going to take away from the nimble feeling and give you more of a monster truck feeling. Hi, I just purchased a Vitus Nucleus 27.5 2021 which seemed like a good deal for the price. Any recommendations on upgrades for this. I'm going to go tubeless and get a dropper, but just wondering if it will handle some rocky Arizona trails and downhills without too many issues? Any thoughts or advice ?
I think it’s the best one in this price range. Pedals would probably be your smartest upgrade. Raceface Chesters are the go-to budget/quality pedals although there are cheaper option on Amazon and EBay that are very similar. Depending on the model Nucleus that you got, you’ll probably want to upgrade to an air fork at some point but I wouldn’t do that right away. Dropper post is a good call.

why chain dropping on GT? is it because of ACERA? What is the minimum to not drop the chain that often? Also does tourney drop chain even more often then acera? Or what is the benefit of acera vs tourney?
Acera is slightly better than tourney but to eliminate chain drop you either need a good chain guide or a 1x drivetrain with a derailleur that has a clutch.
That "1 by drivetrain is better" nonsense.... The more gears you have in the rear cassette, the thinner the chain. Ergo, more maintenance and more expenses for sustaining the bike. The more prone to failure. Especially for people who want a cheap bike in the long run, the classic 3 front and fewer in the rear is the way to go.
Quick update, giant talon 4's price on 2022 versions became crazy, just dont buy it. it's 700 euro with very basic components like xct, mechanical breaks, tourney rear deraileur etc... Also I would say Merida big nine bikes are better than Specialized ones in 2021. Way better price/quality ratio while Merida owns 50% of Specialized.
Not bad given the price. Definitely comparable to other bikes on this list. Not something I’d get with plans to upgrade upgrade though. You can get so much more out of the box for what it would cost to upgrade, for example, the fork and drivetrain.
The difference of one degree might not be felt but going from old school 70 to something decent like 67 or less is noticeable. You don’t feel like you’re so far over the front wheel and therefore in more control and fell less likely to flip over the bars. I suggest you go test some different bikes and see for yourself.
Just have to keep looking around online and trying bike shops. If you’re determined, call bike shops out of town and make the drive if they have something.
Go out and ride, stop geeking out on components and 1 or 2 degrees. Unbelievable how this has become an industry, youtubers and makers. No one here is competing.
Total oversight on my part. Hydraulic brakes and a 120mm fork make it a great value. MSRP is over $600 but the current sale gets it in range. The polygon premiere 4 is also great and is even less.

@@downtoridemtb for sure. As is it's the worst of the new Schwinn bikes but I bought it because I like 27.5s better than 29ers. I'm putting some rockshox on it right now
@@TheRealGOTdurrrred nice! Which on did you go with?
@@downtoridemtb I was just putting a Judy tt 100 fork on it that I had on an older bike. I thought it was 27.5 but it turned out to be 26... ☹️ Guess I'll probably buy a Suntour fork or something
... and had some change left with a smile eh? YOO GOH BOI !!! 😉
If the bike comes with a mechanical disk brake it's crazy dangerous just stay away,, the most important feature on All bikes is the option to stop it! But yes you could stop it either by luck or you tension it before each shred..wires stretch and brake pads gets thinner and thinner,..
PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
Nice and informative video. Thank you.
Thanks!
My problem was going into local shop and nothing under 1500 if at all. Most were 3k and up. Factory online same story, Now maybe I ain't looking right but that was my luck in So Cal.
Yep a lot of the entry level stuff is out of stock. Who knows when they’ll get caught up.
online ... teach yourself the adjusting/tuning
I know 2 bikes for 600 that are pretty good
the 2020 carrera fury, and the voodoo hoodoo which i got and its really good
altough they are only available in the uk so yeah
And the Vitus Nucleas which is way above what you can buy it for which is £550
@@Naturexl yeah in GBP
Very nicely done. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
The marin rock springs one is also a bit nice especially its geo it also has hydraulics its pretty comparable to the marlin five just with better geo but lacking internal cable routing
That must not be available in the US because I can’t even find it on their site. Sounds good though if they got the geo right.
Nice work dude!
Thanks!
I blew my stimulus check that hasn't come in the mail yet on the grey 2021 vr Vetus. Neither my stimulus nor my bike have arrived yet 😐
Hope they both get to you soon! It’ll be worth the wait, the Nucleus is great. I wish I still had mine.
damnnn .. sketchyyy 🤔
Now you just have to be able to find the bikes
Keep checking local shops... some are starting to get a few bikes in stock ... slowly for sure but better than it was
Yep, just have to check local shops and setup in stock reminders on online sales bikes
26' is the best!
shhhh 😉
Call me crazy, but the Giant Talon 4 at $500 still has that narrow-range 14-28 freewheel you see on $70 big box bikes... WHY?? That's just egregious cost-cutting at that price. They didn't pull that crap on the 2020 model, and they don't appear to do that in at least 8 other countries, FWICT.
They changed a lot for 2021. The Talon 2 is now just over $600 and is much better spec’d than the Talon 4.
Headtube angle is ok but definitely not the slackest of what is out there. The Syncr is a better overall bike but the price is considerably different.
I went for the rockhopper sport, all is good but note the head tube not tapered.
Good point. Still a great bike though.
i picked up a GT aggressor pro wit to Walmart for Schwinn Axum an they were sold out
They had some Axums in stock online last time I looked. Anyway the GT will still be a good bike given the price point.
Hi , nice video man! keep it up :)
Thanks!
@@downtoridemtb
You're welcome!
Maybe you would enjoy to watch my riding videos :) 🤘📺🆒️
What? I would be nice to have a review. Which on do you recommend?
This video is a little outdated but in todays market I’d be looking at a Marin Bobcat Trail or a Polygon Xtrada.
How does a Marin Bobcat trail 3 compares to the other bikes in terms of the frame primarily?
It has good geo but some old school standards like a straight steerer and 135 rear qr axle. Not a deal breaker but also not ideal.
I have a Trek marlin 6
Hello, What would you recommend today under $600 ? Can you list a few? Thank you for your videos.

Honestly I might go Walmart bike with the Giordano Valor. Or maybe the cheapest Giant Talon model.
@@downtoridemtb what do you think about the GT avalanche for 499 ? I know you're not into more than 1x but I will be using this on the road as well and plan to convert to electric.
@@downtoridemtb and actually between the GT avalanche, Valor, and Axum, which would you go for ?
GT Avalanche is a no go for me. If it were a 2x, maybe. I’m still leaning toward the Giordano Valor but keep I’mind that is from a trail riding perspective
Thank you so much for such great information. can you please give me your opinion about
(2021 Polygon Xtrada 6 1x11) it's one of the only available bikes for delivery right now at a reasonable price.
Yeah that is definitely a good one for that price. Go for it!
I made the purchase, thanks alot 👍

Got my Marin Bobcat Trail 3 for $599 and it is LEGIT
Yeah I absolutely should have included that one
what do you think about cube aim race 2023 in brown, please tell me if it is good
Decent geometry. Stand over looks good compared to some other bikes. Would have liked to see a 1x drivetrain. Looks like a tapered headtube which is nice. Doesn’t look like it’s sold here in the US so it’s hard for me to compare overall value.
@@downtoridemtb thank you very much, even more help, I'll help you with the full price, I don't know how it is in the USA, but in Europe all the bikes cost a little more than all the parts on it would cost, for profit, I still hope the bike will last different roads, stairs and very small drops
Unca Donald finally managed to get something done...but Uncle JOE has done a MUCH BETTER JOB ALREADY!!!
I’ll leave politics out of it, but yes you can get a much nicer bike with $1400!

Would you recommend the Kona Lava Dome 2021 or the Specialized Rockhopper Comp 2X 2021? They're both around 700 euro in my local shop.

Just get ne a good bike that stays together
I have the ghost kato 27.5 it feels very good is it good what do you think?
Good one!
why chain dropping on GT? is it because of ACERA?
I bought it a year ago and it's the 2021
Schwinn Axum DP vs Orbea MX 50?
I like the frame geo on the Axum
Big fan brø 🙏🙏🥺
Thank you!!!
Is the agresor better than the avalanche?
i am 6'4" and ride 26er excluesivly. stronger wheels & more nimble. too bad the gt is a 29er i feel it is the best buy.
Im 6, 3" tall 220lbs, get a 29r ! Youll love it
Right on, you are the exception but if it works for you then that’s all that matters. Cheers!
Thoughts on the Norco Storm 5?
Not bad given the price. Definitely comparable to other bikes on this list. Not something I’d get with plans to upgrade upgrade though. You can get so much more out of the box for what it would cost to upgrade, for example, the fork and drivetrain.
so do you actually feel HTA difference between 69 degrees and 68 degrees? Sounds like absolutely tiny difference :)
The difference of one degree might not be felt but going from old school 70 to something decent like 67 or less is noticeable. You don’t feel like you’re so far over the front wheel and therefore in more control and fell less likely to flip over the bars. I suggest you go test some different bikes and see for yourself.
What do you think about marin bobcat trail 3 bike?
It’s a no-go for me just based on the 2x8 drivetrain. The 1x systems are just so much easier to use and have less problems.
@@downtoridemtb Will it be a good first mtb bike?
It would be ok but if you can spring for the 4, it is worth it.
Do you know where can I buy one of these bikes? Most companies are sold out.
Just have to keep looking around online and trying bike shops. If you’re determined, call bike shops out of town and make the drive if they have something.
Ty for replying Brotha. Will do.
No prob, good luck!
No Marin bobcat trail?
It’s for sure in some of my other videos
How can you forget vitus?
Love the Vitus Nucleus but I think it’s just over $600
Go out and ride, stop geeking out on components and 1 or 2 degrees. Unbelievable how this has become an industry, youtubers and makers. No one here is competing.
do you know amything on the polygon premier 5?
Total oversight on my part. Hydraulic brakes and a 120mm fork make it a great value. MSRP is over $600 but the current sale gets it in range. The polygon premiere 4 is also great and is even less.
Thanks man!! I'm really considering getting one. I miss riding so much
I think it’s a good one. Or step it up the the Xtrada 1x11.

So they are not meant to be used for mountain-biking, the components aren't meant to handle it....
...yet they are mountain bikes???
what a shitty, expensive sport. it's like it's only for the rich.
Entry level components are not meant to handle harsh downhill riding. For blue and green trails trails they are fine… which also happen to be the type of trails one rides when they are learning so it kind of makes sense.
