I used to come here 7 or 8 years ago... I then became a professional Dj, played clubs, held residency in several places, did some festivals and made a small name for myself around my area in Brisbane Australia. I use word play. Word play is huge! Use key words to transition between hits. Yes use hit songs! Then you can get creative. Practice and be creative!

Sure. Do a search in your playlist using a title of a song then play that song then match words from that song to the chorus to another.

I have the Numark MixTrack ProII. I often turn off the scratch function on one platter and either backspin to slow down as I bring in the next track or speed up. That's one that has helped me even if I don't match them perfect I get the effect of a speed change and pull it out by lowering volume or more often than not using a filter to help with hiding any errors.

This is helpful if you’re gonna dj at a school or something that involves a crowd with diverse tastes 👌
Another quick tip that may help some . I do warn that this method shouldnt be overused , otherwise itll just make you seem as if you dont really have real mixing skills . The tip is you may use the filter knob to muffle out a song but not completely so people can still hear the background a little bit and carefully bring in the second track. Most importantly look for points in the track where there isnt too much going on so it sounds a lot smoother such as on breaks or the beginning of a vocal. This can help a lot if you do it precisely and carefully . Also be aware of the EQ's cause that may throw off the smoothness of the transition. This is just one way i like to do it . Hope this helps anyone :)

DJ TLM, I have a question for you. When you are DJing a party, how many songs do you play from one genre, until you switch to another genre?
It may sound funny but I use sync so I can remix hip hop songs with uptempo 125 BPM songs. Try it it's so much fun! I will do a video response
I usually use sync for emergencies adjusting the tempo is the one you have to get used to first
+RENE HERNANDEZ yea sync is used for remixing tracks in huge range of bpm. for example 103-125bpm.

Took me a while to get used to not mixing everything, but the response from the crowd always solidifies this point if you drop into something we'll know. For instance, pretty boy swag has a glass shattering effect at the beginning of the song which can help you drop from just about any tempo/genre into something that will get a hip hop crowd hyped. Try it!
I understand what you are saying, but definitely need to watch the other videos and then practice. Thanks soo much for sharing, you put it in a way that's much easier for me to understand than most dj's do.

Andrew Patty Well if you use serato hit the tap area on the FX counting the 128bpm instead of the 85bpm and hit the Tap to so the FX take it at 128 and when you hit the echo Boom the magic happens... I am still learning around 15 years but always learning and thanks to DJ TLM because he alwasy sharing the knowledge as i do too thanks to him..🙏🙏 @djtlmtv
Word, don't mix everything. Lately, I've heard two different DJs mix "Uptown Funk", like, huh? That's a song you drop on the '1'.
You could, or you could blend it perfectly (as I tend to).
Everyone would know the start of uptown funk so dropping it on the one would have more of a “wow” factor. That’s what this comment was implying.
Dude this is why I rock with you man! Thank you for clearing that up. As an aspiring dj (still on beat matching lol) I’ve seen videos about always beat matching then transitioning into the song. Glad I saw this first.

Great! Yeah, dropping it on the one let's the crowd hear the new song from the beginning and that can (sometimes) lead to better reactions.
For Christmas I might get a pioneer xdj Rx or numark ns7 iii they both cost the same amount and are both stand alone mixers which one should I get?

+john chapman depends what you want? the xdj rx can run off usb sticks so you do not have to connect your pc and it runs recordbox so your pretty much set for playing on cdj's in a club
on the other hand the ns7 has rotating platters and are super cool for scratching and it looks super cool
so if you are going to be playing in a club that have cdj's then the xdj but if your going to play with your own controller or only in your bedroom then take the one that is the most interesting to you
and i would suggest that you go to your local dj store and try out some different gear and if they have a dj working there then ask him what he finds most important feature wise
i look for something with a screen. i love to be able to use usb's (especially when i have friends over) that way its easier because i don't need to find space for their laptops.
Just consider that if you get the Rx you are limiting yourself a lot,its a nice controller but it only has two channels especially if you're dj-ing a long time it will get very annoying and you can't upgrade it like the ns7,but on the other hand not needing a laptop for the Rx is huge.

I could not agree more! You absolutely nailed this! As a freelance club dj myself, I prefer to loop when switching between large bpm differences, and when all else fails with a certain track (i.e. 128-80 bpm), I've found that just a simple crossfade has just as much of a positive impact, plus, you can ensure that you don't miss the recognizable parts of the track and throw your crowd off. Plus in my opinion, to have some difference in mixing makes it more authentic, and helps to not make your mix appear to be fake by being 'perfect'.
finally a dj that actually knows what the hell he's talking about and how to explain things. cheers bro! thank God for people like you to balance all the waste of time posters. will be subbing and following for future tips. most of this is basic stuff but I like that I can already tell you have vast knowledge about mixing. I'm into production more than dj'ing because I like to create music to mix into my sets but every major group these days does both so I'm getting back into mixing again. have about 150 unreleased tracks I've completed over the last year so really hoping some of them catch the right people's ears. thanks again for sharing! :)
How do i find out the best BPM partners or Blending? For example: 128 - 96 or 140 - 70 . When you mix those BPM together, They sound good!

YES PLEASE! I'm a hip hop and trap dj/turntablist so my bpm can vary A LOT. I usually approach this by planning a head, building up or mellowing down the vibe. That way i normally don't go from 85 to +120 bpm. But trap can vary a lot in bpm, even with the same energy. I found key mixing helpfull too when mixing trap.
Since you play mostly hip hop and r'n'b and i guess you have played a fair share of trap too. So i would really like to hear how you deal with this.
I have a gig next saturday, where i will be playing trap, so it would be awsome to get some fresh ideas while i still have time to practice.
