But, while I can respect Dan Campbell with his "going for it" approach on 4th downs, if he really wanted to win this game, he should have tried for a touchdown just before the half while taking the two FGs on the other two 4th downs in the 2nd half. This totally reminded me of them when they played the Cowboys. They could have won that game had they kicked the FG. While I appreciate Dan Campbell in willing to go for it on 4th downs, still you have to analyze the situation and do it on case by case basis. Yep, 6 points on the table, when you're AHEAD, take the points. At worst we'd have been trying to win on a last minute drive. Unusual drops and fumble also played a huge part in this. 49ers are a very good team. I'm not too disappointed, we knew it would be tough...it's just that we shouldn't have lost. If we'd helped ourselves just a little bit it would have been too much of a comeback for SF.
I disagree with your assessment at the end of the half. Consider where things were at at the moment, they had all the momentum and was literally having their way with the defense. Offense wasn't doing much at that point, so keep the momentum going with another score going into the half and continue to play the same way. Hindsight is 20/20, so its easy to say they should have went for it on 4th at the end of the half KNOWING what the 2nd half ended up being, but in that moment, that was the "safe" call and in my opinion the right call so the momentum doesn't shift going into the half.

When you put three points on the board you have a touch more momentum than the other team. When you lose a fourth down you have dropped significantly in momentum and may lose the game

Good question. If you're not going to do it in the first half when leading, why doing in the second half, while still leading? I read that the analytics said something about it being a 0.3% to go for it. To me, that's basically saying DON'T go for it.

it’s one thing to go for it against sub 500 teams, but you have to adjust when you’re up against the top teams… in the playoffs you have to take the points..
I can appreciate the lions staying true to their identity, but situational football decisions are part of what separates good coaches from great coaches. Going up by 21 vs 17 isn’t such and advantage that it’s worth potentially shifting the momentum of the game and giving a team that is floundering new life. I was good with every 4th down attempt aside from that one. The highest percentage play there is the fg to go up 17. Even if you make it, no guarantee of doing better than 3 and too early in the game to be thinking going for it on fourth is necessary to try and run time off.

I disagree with your assessment at the end of the half. Consider where things were at at the moment, they had all the momentum and was literally having their way with the defense. Offense wasn't doing much at that point, so keep the momentum going with another score going into the half and continue to play the same way. Hindsight is 20/20, so its easy to say they should have went for it on 4th at the end of the half KNOWING what the 2nd half ended up being, but in that moment, that was the "safe" call and in my opinion the right call so the momentum doesn't shift going into the half.

Exactly. The big disadvantage about not making the fourth down is that you lose the momentum. Nobody talks about this. When you put three points on the board you have a touch more momentum than the other team. When you lose a fourth down you have dropped significantly in momentum and may lose the game

The 4th Down risks weren't the problem. The most glaring mistake is running the ball on 3rd Down and Goal at 1:05 left in the game -- forcing them to use a timeout. There's no excuse for that.

It was good for show in the regular season, but there is seldom a reason for bypassing a field goal to go for it on 4th down when everybody in the NFL is extremely athletic and any of the defensive linemen could deflect or bat down a pass. Not to mention that even if you get the 1st down, there's a good chance you'll still have to settle for a FG, especially against a stout defense like SF's. There's a difference between playing aggressively and playing stupidly. Lions definitely played that stupidly. You can get away with that in the regular season and if you failed and lose off that you'll live to play another week, but in the playoffs it's totally different cause every point matters at this point. If this were the Dallas game Campbell would had been crucified for not going for the extra point when he was given 3 chances to do so.

You get another crack at it on 4th down, and lets say they get the same outcome which was a touchdown. You onside, 49ers recover, Lions can stop the clock 3 times get the ball back and at least have a chance.

I can appreciate the lions staying true to their identity, but situational football decisions are part of what separates good coaches from great coaches.
Going up by 21 vs 17 isn’t such and advantage that it’s worth potentially shifting the momentum of the game and giving a team that is floundering new life.
I was good with every 4th down attempt aside from that one. The highest percentage play there is the fg to go up 17. Even if you make it, no guarantee of doing better than 3 and too early in the game to be thinking going for it on fourth is necessary to try and run time off.
