  • Here's a proof-of-concept jam/hangout I had with ‪@thelastdoreo‬...when we were 5000 MILES apart. But this test proved, we could play in tight sync. How?! So this was done with free software called #Ninjam... EXPLAINER BELOW!! 👇

🙀 OK HOW WAS THIS DONE?!
Ninjam is a free plugin which sends audio on a roundtrip, in realtime, between two or more people. The trick to defeating latency it turns out, is to introduce a LOT of it. In fact, it introduces a reliable and long 1+ bar latency so that if you can start your gear in time with the software, it'll maintain the timing relationship for your session reliably due to the long delay.
The REALLY weird thing is that you are not in fact hearing the same mix as each other, since you must hear your own music overlaid over the other person's with a different timing offset. You each hear your music overlaid over each other's music differently. Yet for continuous grooves etc like this, it still works, you never realise it. As you can hear us discuss, it's helpful to respect the '1' downbeat in Ninjam/Jamtaba to help make the offset as similar for every player.
In this jam, I'm in the UK playing the Roland T8 (plus Eventide H90 FX & some modular noises!) into Ableton Live with Jamtaba client, and ‪@thelastdoreo‬ in the USA plays Modular + Digitakt for drums, using Reaper and Ninjam, and is hosting the server privately. In fact my T-8 isn't actually sync'd to Live, I manually stop start it at the beginning of the video to get the timing spot on.
This was the first time we'd used Ninjam. We're going to learn more about the nuances of doing this and then I'll make a tutorial to explain the technique, for now, hope you enjoy the jam session as much as we did and if you have any tips on using Ninjam please share them!

    NINJAM & JAMTABA
▶︎ Jamtaba: jamtaba-music-web-site.appspo... (Should work in many other DAWs - I had to manually try to open the .component to get it to open properly in OS Ventura as it's not Notarised properly)

On open Ninjam servers there are sometimes jazz sessions, and those guys just stick to 12 bar loops or such with chord schemes so they are always in a certain harmonic frame. That and counting is how you do 'big' changes together.
I guess the tip is: chose your jam convention wisely and make it clear to your fellow jammers

This is amazing. Looking forward to the tutorial mentioned in the description. My mate over in aussie land and I might be able to jam again together after many years since he emigrated. Nice jam there too by the way.

Ahh amazing - you definitely can. Recommend you give it a go with Jamtaba and your favourite DAW but also I’ll put something out to explain it, watch this space (but also honestly just go for it!)

you could do some really fun ambient/abstract/sound collage stuff this way - it doesnt have to be totally locked into something -
we need some dedicated servers to meet up and jam - there is a group of people on discord who have servers you will see up in the lists.

Is that little T-8 fun or what... I was just jamming out on mine for like an hour (along with the s-1) and then opened youtube to see this :D

It’s so good, I’m just using the random pattern generator here, although at the end program the last riff. Love it. So tiny and simple and satisfying

Hell yeah you cookin, amazing that's a free plugin, not forced to use the same DAW. Have you seen Soundation? I don't think that integrates with hardware like this kind of does though

    • @mylarmelodies
      @mylarmelodies  7 місяців тому +3

Not seen that one but I do love Endlesss which is also worth your time, it's a bit different to Ninjam in principle (as it's slightly asynchronous, more like you're sending musical chat messages) endlesss.fm/

So, you're hearing different bars with the musical feeds to each other. Each of you is hearing the other one delayed by an even integer multiple number of bars. Rhythmically in sync -- with bar offsets relative to each other. But the talkback mics and video chat don't have the same delay introduced, do they? The music feed is separate from the chat, right? Otherwise you'd be having a super laggy conversation, which you don't seem to be... It's tempo-synced spacetime Relativity! Then later you can decide who's frame of reference was musically better at different sections. I actually thought about this possibility some years ago. Someone has made it happen. Wow.

Exactly! We used a google meet at the same time so could chat instantly, but the music lagged behind. Still works tho!

Whoa! Any reason this wouldn't work for, say, a classic 3 pc guitar band playing to a click? Must try.

Basically, if you do more loop-based stuff then cool - but because the audio is sent in a kind of round robin trip from one person to person 2 then person 3, I don't believe you could quite do 'normal' song stuff - though I may be misunderstanding the way Ninjam does round trips. It massively breaks my brain trying to think about it...like trying to work out the timeline in Primer (2004)...

I've pondered whether Dante Domain Manager would be low enough latency to be practical.
