Merab literally disrespected Sean for months in every way possible to get a title fight Umar said nothing He saw Merab avoiding mentioned it & asked Dana to book fight with someone else. Merab believed at the time that Figueiredo deserved the title shot more as he was a former champion with more ranked wins, e when asked what fight should Umar take to become number 1 contender he answered Petr Yan, but the UFC was pushing for the Umar fight so what ended happening was Figueiredo fought Yan and lost. Merab then talked about Yan being more deserving as he 50-45 Figueiredo (though it was a competitive fight) who was on a good streak on one of his most impressive performances but since Merab himself has 50-45 Yan in the past most people don't see that fight as appealing right now, leaving Umar in an advantageous position. Things are hardly ever black and white, Merab has said multiple times that he would fight Umar if that's what the UFC and fans wanted or if he felt too disrespected, despite thinking Umar didn't deserve the title shot and even promoted the fight a little, but he was also vocal about fighting O'Malley in a rematch, and O'Malley clearly doesn't deserve this chance (the context however was different, Sean was talking online that he had won against Merab and the current champion said that the previous champion was such an easy fight that he was willing to fight him in less than a month of preparation and would dominate him again, he has said that for Umar he would like more time to prepare). Then there is the fact that Divalishivili intended to come back to fighting around march, normal wait time for most champions, however that's during Ramadan, time where some muslim fighters don't fight, Umar being one of them, so it had a big chance of being a move to make Umar's path harder , pretty common among champions, nothing new. However Merab suddenly decided to accept the fight way sooner to be in January, making the situation very weird for some people. Dana said Merab demanded the Umar fight because of the disrespect he was receiving, which is hard to believe alone when he didn't want to fight Umar before so many people thought not only that he was ducking but also that the UFC forced the fight on him, which also doesn't make sense because he could have waited as he said he would and the UFC wasn't going to do much, Umar had already a new fight announced against a Chinese ranked fighter (can't remember his name) and UFC 311 already had a co main event Jamahal vs Jiri. The truth is probably in the middle, Merab probably fears Umar a little (Umar is theoretically one of the hardest matches for Merab in the division, although he is not necessarily the hardest or the only one as people are saying), he clearly believes Umar is being gifted an undeserving title shot (he has good arguments for that) and he clearly feels disrespected and has some anger issues, he has been seen scrapping with a lot of people over insults and similar things, even people way bigger than him. So what's likely a mix of fear, anger, determination and want for recognition is motivating Merab to fight way sooner than most champions would despite it being a fight he didn't want. Whether you are on Merab's side or Umar's (or if you are neutral) will depend on your own opinions, biases and reading of the situation, but this is the overall situation.

Merab believed at the time that Figueiredo deserved the title shot more as he was a former champion with more ranked wins, e when asked what fight should Umar take to become number 1 contender he answered Petr Yan, but the UFC was pushing for the Umar fight so what ended happening was Figueiredo fought Yan and lost. Merab then talked about Yan being more deserving as he 50-45 Figueiredo (though it was a competitive fight) who was on a good streak on one of his most impressive performances but since Merab himself has 50-45 Yan in the past most people don't see that fight as appealing right now, leaving Umar in an advantageous position. Things are hardly ever black and white, Merab has said multiple times that he would fight Umar if that's what the UFC and fans wanted or if he felt too disrespected, despite thinking Umar didn't deserve the title shot and even promoted the fight a little, but he was also vocal about fighting O'Malley in a rematch, and O'Malley clearly doesn't deserve this chance (the context however was different, Sean was talking online that he had won against Merab and the current champion said that the previous champion was such an easy fight that he was willing to fight him in less than a month of preparation and would dominate him again, he has said that for Umar he would like more time to prepare). Then there is the fact that Divalishivili intended to come back to fighting around march, normal wait time for most champions, however that's during Ramadan, time where some muslim fighters don't fight, Umar being one of them, so it had a big chance of being a move to make Umar's path harder , pretty common among champions, nothing new. However Merab suddenly decided to accept the fight way sooner to be in January, making the situation very weird for some people. Dana said Merab demanded the Umar fight because of the disrespect he was receiving, which is hard to believe alone when he didn't want to fight Umar before so many people thought not only that he was ducking but also that the UFC forced the fight on him, which also doesn't make sense because he could have waited as he said he would and the UFC wasn't going to do much, Umar had already a new fight announced against a Chinese ranked fighter (can't remember his name) and UFC 311 already had a co main event Jamahal vs Jiri. The truth is probably in the middle, Merab probably fears Umar a little (Umar is theoretically one of the hardest matches for Merab in the division, although he is not necessarily the hardest or the only one as people are saying), he clearly believes Umar is being gifted an undeserving title shot (he has good arguments for that) and he clearly feels disrespected and has some anger issues, he has been seen scrapping with a lot of people over insults and similar things, even people way bigger than him. So what's likely a mix of fear, anger, determination and want for recognition is motivating Merab to fight way sooner than most champions would despite it being a fight he didn't want. Whether you are on Merab's side or Umar's (or if you are neutral) will depend on your own opinions, biases and reading of the situation, but this is the overall situation.

This belief that Merab is afraid of Umar is going to backfire Umar if they start underestimating him. I don't agree how Merab acts and yes it really looks bad and looks like he's avoiding and he does not really explain well what he means. As I understand, he's mad because he literally had to go through every fighter in order to get the title shot, especially last few fights when he defeated former champs, there was a high chance that he could loose and say good bye to the belt forever and now when Umar got the chance to fight for the belt the way he wanted, Merab got upset.
He's also upset because when Suga won the belt, he didn't call Merab and called Chito and when Merab asked why he was not next, UFC told him that champ calls whoever he wants and now when he's the champ, they didn't let him choose the next fight nor the next fight date.

Absolutely correct! I think he has solid reason to be angry, but Umar is really the next guy so this fight will be the best in the division, I think Merab takes it.

Merab's situation is his fault. He could've fought for the belt years ago. Aljo was on top & Merab didn't want the title fight so he continued to fight other contenders.
Umar's situation isn't his fault. Sandhagen was the only man in the top 10 that would sign a contract to fight Umar. Nobody else wants that fight. Umar called out everyone at the top when he fought Sandhagen. Absolutely nobody has called out Umar.
The only man that can be forced to fight contenders is the champion. Merab treating it like a personal attack but it isn't. It's simply the fight to make.
