The Man Who Tried to Give Himself An Ulcer... For Science

  • In 1984, Dr. Barry Marshall had a theory about ulcers that he couldn't convince the science community of. So, he took matters into his own hands... or stomach, and infected himself with a potentially deadly bacterium.

      I have been diagnosed and treated for H Pylori but now I'm worried I might get cancer in my esophagus instead of in the stomach : /
      What if the strain I previously had in my stomach was actually protecting me from getting cancer in the esophagus and/or was completely harmless to my stomach?
      My doctor told me that I had inflammations down there though so maybe it was good to get rid of it?
      I dunno, I think I'm just rambling at this point.

    • @user-ck2te6ej5v
      @user-ck2te6ej5v 7 років тому +3

      Alcazar fan from Kiruna If I had to guess, your doctor probably thought to check for H. pylori because you had a problem. Whether that was heartburn, reflux, or even a sore throat or coughing, I don't know. But if that problem went away, it was likely the H. pylori that caused it, and it's a good thing it's gone. If not, your stomach probably didn't need the H. pylori anyway. Although it may help a little bit, stomach and esophagus cancer still seem to be pretty rare as opposed to some other cancers, so there probably isn't anything to worry about :)

    On a side note, don't take too much antacid. It can seriously damage your stomach lining. If you are finding yourself regularly taking antacid then go talk to your doctor, there are lots of reasons why, but you shouldn't be swigging on that bottle any more than occasionally.

    The stomach? 98.6 degrees of potentially rotting food. What could be in there? What kind of emulsion is created by exponential mixing of reactions? I ate leftovers without reheating them only to wake up two hours later vomiting. I think there might have been some stuff living in the food that I didn't kill with heat before I threw it in the fermentation vat of my stomach.

    H. Pylori is horrible. I had it for over 2 years because my doctor stopped practicing and never got back my biopsy results to see if I was still sick. About 6 months later we found out I was still sick after months of illness and pain. Then it took 2 rounds of strong antibiotics because the bacteria were resistant.

    So... about 4 years ago, my daughter and mother went to a sandwich chain and after eating, both began vomiting within 2 hours. It was a nightmare. My mom was convinced it wasn't her favorite sandwich chain, but being a skeptic, I asked if she had eaten all her sandwich. She said the other half was in our refrigerator. After they had both stopped vomiting and managed to go to sleep, I took my moms sandwich and ate it with gusto. I sat a 5 gallon bucket near my bed and went to bed. About an hour later, I began vomiting violently. It was definitely the sandwich. When the sandwich chain opened, I went and explained the situation to the manager, as I was, an older gentleman came in and started yelling about food poisoning. My mom was issued a refund and it turns out the mayonnaise had been tainted and made about 2 dozen people sick. So... that's why I believe in human testing.

    Why hadn't anyone thought of it before?? Because they refused to think of it!!! True science always asks, what if!!!!

    Thanks for all of these videos. I enjoy them a bunch. I never liked science in school, but now I realize that I had very little understanding of any of the sciences. Could anyone recommend books about biology or chemistry or physics? I appreciate any thoughts! Thanks.

      Checkout "One Two Three... Infinity" by George Gamow. It's more conversational that a traditional textbook, and perhaps focuses more on math than science but it is a fascinating and enjoyable read. See if they have in your local library. In not, you can get it cheap on amazon.

    I got diagnosed with H Pylori about 2 weeks ago and I just got antibiotics included in the triple therapy (Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin, and Omeprazole) after complaining about frequent heartburn and nausea. Has this happened to anyone and has anyone taken this treatment yet? Are the side effects really bad? How long did it take for you to feel better? Thanks

    Similar to the skin; "If it ain't causing an infection, leave it alone. Because those bacteria are making sure no other strains catch a ride because there is no room for them". But if they go crazy and start giving you a rash or skin ulcers, well, some relations have to end, or at least restart by getting rid of the violent ones.
