  • I broke my self-imposed 'rule' of a maximum of 250 miles per day, and tow a caravan with my Kia EV6 Electric Car the 325 miles from Commons Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club Site to Moffat Camping and Caravanning Site in the Scottish Borders in one day.
    I show you how I plan the my route to minimise the chance of needing to queue at EV Chargers.
    Finally we take a quick look around Moffat and I find my favourite coffee shop in Scotland - Brodies of Moffat.

    03:50 - Towing a caravan with an EV from Commons Wood to Moffat

      I agree..I've done some TV work as part of my job and it keeps getting rerun on all the main channels ..every time I have a keyboard warrior who has something to say..as a caravanner and a petrol head with a 3 litre bi turbo I still am a fan of Andrews content ..I am yet to be convinced that an EV is the way to go for our twin axle ..but in 10 years when I retire I'm hoping things improve..keep up the great work

    Hi Andrew, Moffat is our favourite stop over on the way north and we time our journeys to eat in Brodies. But we stop at the Green Frog Site, as the C&C C site demands you stay two nights. And I’m a member! For those with Fuel based vehicles. The petrol station at the top of town was cheaper than the ESSO on the way in. That bread shop on the corner you filmed is also excellent.

    Hi Andrew, an EV is not for us for a few reasons . Cost of vehicle, range anxiety and infrastructure being the main reasons and with working full time our holidays / days out are limited so just want to fill up with diesel and go . Totally understand why you would want an EV though as you have more time to split up your journeys and I’m sure they are very quiet and smooth to drive plus it doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks, it’s your choice ! I would also think with the smooth quiet ride that would help to prevent migraines ? By the way your choice of dogs and where you live is spot on and so are your relaxing vlogs ( especially love it when you are driving through Scotland in good weather with some great pick of music ) keep up the good work at keeping us entertained 😊❤x

    Yet again, great honest and informative video Andrew, thank you. I've towed further but wouldn't want to tow for longer than you did, especially with stops to exercise the dogs. I'd really had enough by 9.5 hours driving whilst towing, especially as that only included 1 comfort break in then 'vans small room for no more than 5mins.

    I do a regular 400mile journey from our home in France to Ipswich and it really takes it out of me even when everything works perfectly on the tunnel. Ferry's give a greater rest break but turn it into a 10-12 hour trip. Fastest ever 7¾ hours but not towing.

    Well done Andrew.
    We did 395 miles in a day down to Kent, Essex & back home. Admittedly we were not driving Ev or towing, but it does take it out of us, a pair of 72+ oaps. Took us 12 hrs including a lunch break, 2 x comfort breaks, snak break, a visit to collect a market place purchase for our caravan & 3 stops for family history genealogy. And all on the hotest day of the year. What we also had to contend with was 2 × 25 mins delays getting in & out of Kent via QE2 bridge. Thsts always the bummer of any journey that side of London
    The setting up jobs my hubby does as solo too when we tow as I'm disabled. And you virtually drove past our door just off the A1 15 mins south of Blyth.
    Keep on keeping on xx

      You have my sympathies as a fellow migraineur Linda. I have found that by restricting my triptan intake when I have an attack, listening to my body and getting enough rest does at least normally decrease the severity of attacks. Now in my 50s I've stopped getting mad at them and accept them as a warning sign that I need to slow down. All the best. xx

    Andrew, love the content as usual and whilst I've no current interest in an EV, I appreciate what you are doing and there will always be those that deride you, don't let them get you down.
    I also appreciate the issues with long journeys whilst towing I did over 300 miles in France last year in one journey from Calais to our first stop over site and it ruined the first few days of my holiday, so this year, I have limited my towing to 250 miles and have broken my journey up into three days instead of the usual two, I'm sure my 5 year old daughter will also appreciate spending less time in the car and more time in the camp site swimming pools.
    Keep up the great content 👍

    Another very informative and entertaining video. We no longer tow, but do drive EVs and plan our longer journeys as you do - always with alternative charging locations, which we have never needed to use. I need to stop more regularly than many due to chronic pain and fatigue, and we usually keep to “ABC” (Always Be Charging). We choose AC chargers if we are having a lunch stop or at a destination. I am glad you are going to keep your future journeys shorter. There are plenty of people like Bjorn in Norway who show how far an EV can go. We can just enjoy the smoothness, quietness, lack of fumes and torque - and drive sensible distances.

    Hi Andrew, I’ve got a caravanning update. I’m in St Ives, Cornwall, typing this…
    Left home in the i4, pulling an elddis 574 at 3am on Sunday, with 100%.
    I set the cruise at 60 and jumped onto the M6 at Stoke on Trent.
    1st stop, at Gloucester services. We rolled in with 13%, after averaging 1.5 m/kWh.
    Gloucester only has 50kW chargers, so I left the caravan at Gloucester, and drove 5 miles down the road to a Costa, with 2 Instavolts. Although they were 120kW, I only pulled 87kW. Sat there for over an hour, and got back up to 97%. Then I had to drive up the M5 to the junction above Gloucester services, then double back to the services to get the caravan, wife and daughter. That hogged some of my range. Next stop was Collumpton, near Exeter. 6 x 350kW chargers there. I rolled in with only 3%. Squeaky bum time. The car pulled 184kW, and by the time we’d had breakfast and a toilet break, the car was at 100%. Don’t worry, we didn’t keep anyone waiting. Next stop was Penhale, just a bit further down the A30 from Cornwall services. We chose Penhale, as there were 2 shell recharge chargers, and a shopping village. We rolled in with 8%, and we had to wait 10 mins to get onto a charger, but once on, we mooched in the shops for about 30 mins, and the car was back to 80%. This was plenty to get us to St Ives.
    Bear in mind that at each stop, I had to un-hitch and then hitch the caravan, as none of them were pull-through. All in all, not a bad trip, apart from the messing about at Gloucester. Also, I noticed, after the Gloucester Instavolt charge, I found a BP Pulse, a bit closer, but it wasn’t showing in the car nav. If all services had at least 6 x 350kW chargers, it would have been a doddle. There would be no squeaky bums, as we could go to any services, and get a really fast charge. Alas, this is not yet the case. The car was a beasty, towing, but only averaged 1.5 m/kWh, which is disappointing, as I was set at 60 all the way. I couldn’t have driven any more efficiently. I’m not sure how you managed 2m/kWh pulling a larger van than mine, with an EV6. All I can think is, maybe you didn’t have it loaded up like mine, and there was only you and the dogs in the car.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  11 місяців тому +1

      Very interesting thanks Nick! I never use the cruise control as I find it demolishes the mi/kWh. I'm sat in Kimberley Darlington getting the van serviced and have enjoyed 2mi/kWh at the worst. Yes, if all services had a minimum of 6 x 350kW chargers, life would be a breeze. Hope the journey home goes smoothly. Cheers!

    We always stop at Moffat (if there are pitches available) when heading further north in Scotland from our home in the Midlands. Although we don't have to stop for fuel, we nearly always pull into Teebay services (how sad is it to have a favourite service station?) to stretch our legs, give the dogs a chance to cock their legs and look at the range of food in the farm shop.
    I'll have to find that river walk for the dogs next time we stay, we normal just take them to the small recreation area near the site entrance.
    You haven't convinced me on the EVs but we do have the advantage of being able to switch drivers when one of us is flagging to allow the other person to have a nap in the passenger seat.

    Grantham Gonerby Moor Gridserve are also a good option for stopping whilst towing, I use it when heading south from Hull. You can park your caravan right by the chargers - if it was quiet you could even get away without unhitching.

    Thank you for this, in my view, realistic video( 's) about driving a EV and caravan. We were in mai/june with our 'continental' Sprite Alpine Sport 2016 5 weeks in France and returning two weeks ago we ordered 'blind' the new Volvo EX30-Plus extended range, 480 km without caravan..... We will see what the range is with our caravan. Important for us: we can afford an electric car so we can tribute a little to a better climate and environment. Driving EV is the future. Our Alpine Sport is empty 960kg and fully loaded 1200. The Volvo EX30 Plus extended range can tow 1400 kg. Taking in account your experiences the last year, we are convinced we did make a acceptable choice. A 400 km drive a day one hour extra? No problem. Thank you for your views on driving EV and caravan.

There are new chargers at the new starbucks in Kingstown. I’m getting an EV in August so these are great videos to help me. Thanks for your lovely videos!

    Perfect! We’re due to get our first caravan (all-electric) in about a month and planning a trip to see family in Northern Ireland, and you’ve introduced me to a perfect EV friendly, dog friendly overnight stop before getting the ferry at Cairnryan. Moffat (and Brodies) look ideal.

    Excellent work, Andrew. I have been amazed that am averaging about three km to the kWh in The Grey... don't expect that to last once I get the full build out sorted, but it is encouraging. Am loving electric driving, though there is no doubt that one does have to plan a little differently. That's just a shift of mental gears. Once sorted, all smooth! Ear chucks to the boys. YAM xx

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  11 місяців тому +1

      3mi/kWh isn't too bad at all! And it shouldn't go down too much with the build because it's mostly about the aerodynamics. xx

    Very useful information, thank you. The charging provision is so much better now than even 6 months ago. Let's hope that the improvement continues, and also that the kWh prices start coming down in line with general energy prices. It is great that you are trying this out now - personally I am waiting until a range of about 200 miles is possible. I think the first ones of those will be available in 2024 (e.g. Rivian), but truly long range batteries will become more common from 2026 onwards. I guess you only need about 125 kWh battery for that sort of range, not much more than your 78 kWh, but right now it is just not available. However, battery prices are falling and EV production is increasing.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  11 місяців тому +1

      Well said. And yes, the price needs to come down. At Gridserve prices I'm paying about the same per mile as my 4x4 towing the Airstream. Thankfully cheap/free charging on campsites helps offset that. Thanks for watching!

    Good to see the infrastructure getting there, all very smooth, thanks for sharing :) That's one heck of a drive though, far further than I'd want to go, my brain just gives up even with plentiful rest stops & I know I'm nowhere near as safe a driver as I was when I set out so it's not worth the risk of powering through. Not so much physical tiredness, more zombie mode due to boredom! Then the next day isn't fun despite not having to deal with migraines, that's when the body & brain tiredness kicks in & I'll be ok, just not quite firing on all cylinders, so not interested in doing much! Probably a reaction to the 100mile a day commute I used to do! Much better to take a night longer en route, but then be able to enjoy an area properly as soon as arrived.

    Really enjoying your EV journey and all the videos. One of the reasons (among many) why I switched to electric was to slow me down and stop me from burning the candle at both ends. Used to regularly do 14+ hour days in the drivers seat, not good for anyone. Now I find having regular breaks and being able to return emails and calls and do paperwork is much better for body and mind. I get in at night more relaxed and with all my work done for the day.

      The road from the motorway into Moffat last week was too fast for my daughter and her partner last week, they got flashed for speeding by a massive yellow temporary camera that was nearly as big as their car. They saw it when they were returning to Dumfries and she said "I'm glad that wasn't there when we drove in". It turns out that it was and there was a ticket in the post to prove it a few days later. 😆😅😄

    Thanks for such an informative video! I recently drove my EV (a Tesla Model Y) from Reading to Manchester and back, and the limiting factor in driving is very much not the car or range or chargers - the limit is the human driver! A range of 300 miles (I get 4mi/kWh so that’s achievable!) at an average of 60mph is 5 hours of driving - in my opinion that’s too much for one go. Even when I stopped for a break, I found the car would be back at 80% before I’d had enough time to finish my food & drink! I’ve had the same on trips over to Europe, the car isn’t the limiting factor - I am! It’s great that people are starting to realise that the cars are at a point where long journeys are possible - just plug the car in whilst you’re resting and by the time you’re ready to set off, so is the car - it doesn’t add any time to your journey! The Eurotunnel is also great for this - plug in and by the time your train is called, you’d be topped up. I don’t see any petrol pumps until after, when I’d rather be getting on with my trip than be stationary for longer 😉
    Out of interest, do you use A Better Routeplanner for your drives? I occasionally use it, but mostly follow the in-car navigation for superchargers, which will also auto-divert to less busy chargers - would be interested to hear your experience!

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  11 місяців тому +1

      I'll have to check out that Route Planner, thanks! There's no denying that one of the main benefits of Tesla ownership is access to the Supercharger network, and the dynamic in-car route planning. Gridserve is putting up a good fight for the rest of us, and hopefully they will present a useable dynamic solution too. As for breaks... I wonder how many people jumped to the wrong conclusion when I first said that we would not make our planned first stop? ;) Thanks for watching!

    Having driven from SW London to the Cairngorms which is 554 miles in One Day in my Diesel MPV sticking to the Speed Limit and still made good time and Fuel economy, None of this really matters, The thing is most of us go off Camping and take a small Generator etc, The thing with an EV is you can go totally Off Grid without the need of a ShorePower Hookup or a Generator or any of the baggage that goes with that and you are free of it all, Saving Space, Weight, Fuel for the Generator, Cost of the Generator and the list Goes On, I love my Euro 6 Vehicle but you don't have to drive 554 miles in a day like I did and the fact that the EV6 can power the Caravan and it's self makes it the Ultimate Touring Combo, I Get It, My MPV is awesome but the EV6 and the Xplore Just makes everything right with the World, Thanks Andrew, Great Content. As Per.

    What a refreshing change this was to the usual "towing a caravan with an EV is hell on earth" video.
    Yes, towing a caravan reduces your range. Yes, access to the chargers is a bit of a faff. But with a positive mental attitude that sees these as challenges to overcome rather than problems to moan about, the end result is so much more positive.
    Have you found anything that stops you getting migraines after a long drive; eg less caffeine, more caffeine, prophylactic pain relief?

    EVs are clearly capable of travelling what is a reasonable distance while towing. Personally I aim for a maximum of four hours. This means I arrive just after midday, can then setup and then relax for a few hours. I am then fine to go the next day.
    Caravanning is after all a holiday not a job.

    Andrew... I stepped away from your channel when you took a break from camping and glad to see you are back. Question: I currently live in America (California) but will be setting up a home in the Netherlands. A caravan was on my list of things to purchase and watched your time with the Bailey Discovery D4-2. Was there any particular reasons why you decided on the Elddis Xplore Activ 304 instead of the Discovery? Thank you so much for the videos on towing weight and available payload.

    I rarely comment but enjoy your videos. Just to say that I sympathise with your situation. I used to get migraines ( hormonal) - people who have never had one cannot imagine the unbelievable pain & disability that come with them. And even after the pain dissipates there are still peculiar after-effects whereby the ‘victim’ is still not back to normal. It’s not just a very bad headache. I wish I could suggest a possible solution.(My hormones changed so I was lucky) Take care!

      Thanks Diana. I find that eating like a diabetic (avoiding sugar spikes) helps massively. Nowadays I rest if I can and try to avoid taking Triptan if I have the luxury of time. I've found that by rolling with it and not fighting it, the severity of the attacks has diminished. Oh and yes, the 'Migraine Hangover' as we call it in my family... Horrid things. I love Moffat and have stayed at that site many times. However I wanted to comment on your remarks about how long it takes to set up or pack up on your own. I frequently travel solo in a campervan and although less complex than setting up on a caravan it still takes me some time.. All good common sense stuff, but we are way off the number of charging points actually needed if we are going to meet the governments commitments. Having to park the van in a separate area is a real faff in service areas. Not saying ev's are useless, but you have to be aware of the limitations. I have to say caravan parking in service areas in the last couple of years in our experience has been awful, often full of vehicles not supposed to be parked there. Although we tow as a couple, one of us is disabled and unable to drive , our driving experience is similar to yours. All credit to you your videos are very honest
