Nike Zoom Fly 3 - After 100 Miles

  • The Zoom Fly 3 was a shoe that I initially thought was exciting and powerful. A bit heavy but worth it. And over the last 100 miles, all that has still applied. But there was a catch. For me, I had a hot spot (not unusual in a React foam shoe), and it turned into a pain point (something that is a bit unusual). It almost made this shoe unrunnable for me. I had to resort to an aftermarket insert, which did end up saving this shoe and making it exciting again. But a $160 shoe shouldn't need an $80 insole to make it work.
Fortunately, I haven't yet heard anyone else having the same problem I did, so I hope that this is an issue limited to me. But if you're having similar problems, I'd love to hear it.
disclosures: While I have been working with Nike to train for the Chicago Marathon, I purchased this pair of shoes with my own money. No one is paying me to make this video or to wear this shoe. No one has previewed my thoughts or footage before it was published to youtube.

@@ryanf2709 correct, the water evaporates and leaves behind the micro dirt particles essentially in the weave, or the salt water is speeding up the oxidization of the materiel, hence the discoloring, and or uv light also, prob all three :(

Thank so much for your honest comments, where you mention the negative points you found on these shoes and not only the positive ones. I was a bit worried that because you like Nike so much (I like it too), your reviews would be too biased, but seeing that you also express your 'negative' findings on a shoe brings quality and reliability to the channel. Kudos!
P.S. Well over 100 miles on my ZF flyknits they still do great! I don't run on water and React is so durable that I don't see reasons to "upgrade" to v3... for now.

I've been watching your videos and love watching your videos. Please keep doing what you've been doing. Thank you! I'm also a Nike fan and love the most both the Zoom Fly 1 and Zoom Fly Flyknit out of all the running shoes I've tried. I tried the Zoom Fly 3 at a store but the Vaporweave upper did not feel comfortable with the material and the shape and the Vaporweave upper looked very plastic. With the Zoom Fly Flyknit and Zoom Fly 3 that were both brand new out of the box, I compared side by side by squeezing the midsole foams of both and the Zoom Fly 3 felt noticeably harder than the Zoom Fly Flyknit even though they're both React foam. Did you feel that Zoom Fly 3 foam felt harder in your hand when you squeezed it? The greater stack height of Zoom Fly 3 with more React foam might have made runners feel more cushion when it's on foot. Out of the three different Zoom Fly versions, which version do you think is the fastest for your 400 meter run for your speed workout?

Ankle and knee pain can occur for various reasons, the shoe is the last, maybe you're already injured from something else, or overtrained from another sport.....also, you can have running form issues, which can cause your pain right at the first mile......it definitely sounds like your knee and ankle was already over stressed, when you got to the first mile or else you're overweight.........

Thanks for making this video! I didn't have this problem with the Zoom Fly 3 but with the Nike Pegasus Turbo 2. First run I had a lot of pain in my almost all the toes in my right foot. I think that was partly due to too tight lacing so I played around with it a little but then started having a lot of pain in my right big toe. I was going to return the shoes but then I remembered your insole trick so I bought a cheap $8 Dr.Scholl running insole and having that thicker more substantial insole really saved the Turbo 2 and has allowed me to keep it in rotation. Now if I had paid full price for the Turbo 2 I probably would have returned it immediately but I got such a great deal on it that I wanted to give it a real chance before returning.

Isn't it amazing how we are all different and experience differences in shoes. I have 4 pairs of this shoe knowing how quickly Nike changes their designs. I bought one pair and then decided to get the top model (Vaporfly next% @ £250) only to be very disappointed with it. The inner sole you can't remove so I could not use my orthotics and the weird lace up system at an angle made the shoe fell really uncomfortable. I also thought the two shoes were very close in performance, but the Zoom fly 3 allowed me to remove the innersole so I could use my orthotics. It was a no brainer for me as the Next % were sent back and I then went on to purchase another 3 pairs of the Zoom fly 3. Very happy with this shoe as I also fell it fits a lot better on me than the Vaporfly next %. Always enjoy your reviews 👍

Totally late response, but I do recall watching this video in the past and the topic of it getting dirty. I had recently cleaned white Zoom Fly 3's... after 250 miles haha. I found a huge improvement by cleaning the outside with a light nylon brush on the outside with liquid water detergent. With the laces off, I pulled the eyelets out and took a soft toothbrush with liquid laundry detergent between the two inner layers that removed the debris and cleaned up the color significantly. Took the kitchen sprayers and rinsed the inside layers out. I would say 85% improvement in looks.
I was and am still pleased with the current shoe so much I am hoping they make a ZF4.

Just watched your review - I have run in both the zoom fly 1 and flyknit versions and am contemplating on ordering the ZF 3's. About a week before the World Championships I was doing some speed work and what was a 'hot spot' that I had noticed on a few runs almost instantly turned into a terrible stabbing pain just as you described. It was so bad I had to take a few days off completely leading into my race. I swapped out the insole for a pair of Hoka cushier insoles I had kicking around and it literally rescued me and allowed me to race. I definitely notice hot spots in Zoom Flys though. Just bought a pair of NB Rebels and am surprisingly impressed. Not sure what i should do!

The Zoom Fly FK is a 10mm drop, and the 3 is a 8mm drop. I wonder if that is part of the reason for the foot pain. Also, you can get the Zoom Fly 3 with a FlyKnit upper if you get a customized version on nike.com. I wonder how that would compare as far as the moisture issue.

The Zoom Fly Flyknit has the best midsole I've ever felt in a shoe. Afterwards I went for the Peg 35 Turbos and I gotta say I was disappointed with the ZoomX + React combo. I was looking forward to trying the Zoom Fly 3 but maybe I should just try to find another pair of Zoom Fly FK.

I've clocked 400km on the ZF3. Took about 200km to get used to the shoes. Didn't like the ankle fit initially as the back heel padding was fairly low and took some getting used to. The cushioning and plate bounce were great from day 1. It's still pretty good after 400km.

I loved the ZF1 (300+ miles). ZF2 (~350 miles) midsole was much better, but i hated the flyknit, and the fact it dug into my achilles if running more than 10 miles. I'm struggling to get to 20 miles total on the ZF3 because for some reason one knee and the opposite ankle are having problems. I dont know what it is, but I'm still trying to get more miles into them if i can get through the pain.

Very helpful review, thanks. I currently rotate a pair of Zoom Fly Flyknits that should last me through the year. My concerns with this shoe was that the two layer upper reminded me of the Peg Turbo 1, which collected debris between layers, and I’m casually concerned about the potential lack of flexibility in the plastic “lace plates” in this current model. So I’m going to sit tight and wait to see what’s new for next season.

Interesting comment on the footpain. I have stopped running in my Flyknits for now because of foot pain, especially on my left foot (which is half a size bigger than my right), in the area of the ball of my foot (a little forward and to the left). I had been using them mostly for track and interval work, but was trying to build distance in them. I had to put them to the side because building distance for my marathon next weekend was more important. I'll get back to them after the marathon, as I don't have too many Ks in them at all. It's put me off thinking of the Zoom Fly 3 for now, as a distance shoe.

I had my worst injuries in this shoe. I found it to be great for the first 100 miles and then it started to fall apart. It was springy and reacted well however the shoe felt dead and I had a similar pain in my foot, that didn't happen with the new balance 1080v10s, since I have switched shoe I've never had the same pain again, I guess it could have been because I have a wide foot and these shoes are narrow at the front toe box. The shoe itself is fast, the fastest thing I've ever worn, I just couldn't go big distances in it.

Compared to the 3 pair of OG and one pair of Flyknit Zoomfly’s version 3 is a brick and more or less useless for me. I’m keeping them in my rotation for 10k slow training days only because I went to so much trouble to get a pair that fit properly after having a sizing issue. I am of the opinion that NIKE blew it with this version, I have issues with the fit, the feel, the weight, outsole feel etc. I WANT to like them because this shoe (Zoomfly) really made a huge difference for me.

What was your size trouble, did you have to go up/down? I have only tried ZF3 in store, it felt OK with my size (9) (like other Nikes).
Let's say you have no Zoom Fly and need to get new a new pair, would you go for a flyknit version again? Or anything else - what would be your pick?

    • @markfalkingham590
      @markfalkingham590 5 років тому +1

Miko-why Ceha I ordered them from Nike.de (I live in Germany) They were boxed and labeled as a size 11 which is my normal size but they fit as if they were a 12 so i returned them. Nike actually checked and verified they were indeed mislabeled and were a completely different size. I reordered another pair using a goodwill discount they gave me for the inconvenience, these fit relatively well except for the heel. Even using the runners knot I cannot get them to lockdown, the heel collar just won’t cinch. I’ve never had this issue before. For me the Flyknit was the most natural out of the box perfect fit of nearly any shoe I’ve ever owned. The OG also fits me perfectly. As for the vaoorweave material, I don’t care for it, both previous versions are preferable to me.
In the end make sure you can lock them down before you buy them. Mine are reserved for slower days this version is a 👎👎

I bought it because I have heard that it helps with speed. Do you recommend anything that helps with speed? I am still on the fence with these whether to keep them or not. I just thought the deal was something I couldn't pass up. I know your thoughts with Nike. Do you think the carbon fiber plate rusted with the water making the feeling in your foot weird? I've also felt that particular pain and research indicates it may be morten's neuroma..massage and rolling and changing insoles eliminated it for me..IMO nike insoles are akin to putting a plastic chair as a seat in a Corvette..I replace every one of them with a skechers (the best) or Hoka insole..the epic react with a skechers insole or the NB beacon (also a very poor insole) with a skechers insole are my current race shoes of choice up to half marathon..if I could just find a good trail shoe that was comfortable and secure, that had decent traction, I'd be a happy boy..enjoy the channel thoroughly

When I was younger, I had tons of arch problems as I am flat-footed. When I got fit with orthotics, that sensation you described of “Every shoe feeling the same” is the same kind of thing that I experienced as well. Including the increased weight, I felt as though the springiness and character of shoes was deadend because of the orthotic insert. Does this lunarlon-nylon plate sensation speak to the miles you have run with the inserts, or was this your sentiment beforehand?

Seems like the midsole and heel are both badly worn but not the front part of the sole. Tried this and I think the shoe forces you to land on your forefoot so you should see more wear on the front which also maximises efficiency during kick off, hence the purpose of the Nike racers

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 років тому

Compared to a rubber behemoth in the Asics or brooks family, maybe then I would consider these worn in the areas you've stated. Or if you care about cosmetics over performance, then yes. Otherwise, I'd say these are doing quite well

I have experienced the sharp pain sensation in this shoe almost identical to what you described after running an average of 100k weekly for around 3 months now, I have been attending physio therapy to help strengthen tendons and areas connected to the overall mechanics of my foot. however I must add that previously I was running in Adidas boost and with the broader width of the sole on Adidas I never suffered this issue though I might add that since moving to the zoom fly 3 my pace has increased considerably and consistently which has changed my pronation and my strike so I’m not 100% sure if it is purely down to the shoe or not? But really good solution with the change of sole which I might try as I’m thoroughly enjoying the improved performance of my runs in this shoe as they are much more affordable for my budget than the VF nxt%

Ma man, the hot spot issue also came to my left foot today. I agree with 100% that a $160 shoe shouldnt need an extra support to solve the hot spot issue. But I have to admit that compared to some other running shoes, Zoom Fly 3 wouldnt make me think too much about hurting my knees (because I got two serious knees injuries on my both legs once), for its great shock absorption actually gives you a great joy of running fast without being worried about getting injured.
I think the major cause of the hot spot issue that came to me today is because when I was running on the track, I used my left foot to spin first whenever I wanted to run pass someone and avoid the crowded people. And later I also found out my right foot didnt have any hot spot issues. As I took some some rest walking during the run, the hot spot issue gradually disappear, but of course when I ran again, it came back again. So is there any chance that the issue is coming from my not appropriate running techniques?
    Love to hear some feedback~
    Thanks advanced
BTW to be honest, the main reason why I am very fond of this pair of shoes is that Next % too expensive, and fortunately I got some discount to get these shoes today (like less than 120 usd) and its great shock absorption is the most fascinating reason why I choose them.(I like run long & fast around 18+K & 4:35min/K) I also tried on the P36 & Turbo today. And I gonna say I am probably not a fan of both of them (The soles are too hard compared to Zoom Fly 3)

i wouldn't overthink the hotspot issue with the zoom fly 3. if you experience it, i don't think it's something you can really avoid, unfortunately. it's not something that changing my footstrike or stride has seemed to ameliorate.

Hey Kofuzi, I have a quick question for you regarding the insole. I have a RR insole that I haven't been using. I felt the insole added rigidity to the midsole/ride. I'm a sucker for squish in my midsole, and felt the RR insole added too much firmness.
Also, I perceive the insole added undue weight to the entire shoe. I'd need to weigh the insoles to confirm, but I wanted to see if you experience the same perception with the insole. Maybe I'll test them in the ZF3 and see how I like it.

Agree. Zoom Fly Flynit is a better shoe. The ZF3 feels heavy, as it is, and it also feel hot as well. I also feel the same about the Next%, it actually feels hotter than the FlyNit 4% version.

@@kofuzi I agree with you now. After some more runs, safe to say they are absolutely amazing. At race pace during a half marathon I PR'd without really trying to. I will be running the NYC Marathon in them this year.

What kind of average mileage do you get out of shoes(I know it's such a general question and it deserves a 'depends' answer)? When do you decide that the shoe needs to get retired? I got 500km out of the first Zoom Flys before they tore(got replaced for free), still on the Zoom Fly FK (over 500km) and they are starting to seem 'flat'... Thinking about getting these for training. Thanks for the review.

the long and specific answer is: your body will tell you (i.e. you said your Zoom Fly 2 are starting to feel flat). i usually listen for sudden little aches and pains that don't really have any explanation.
the short and non-specific answer: about 250-300 miles.

I have rt foot metatarsalgia in certain shoes and it starts at various miles within the run depending on which shoe. Saucony Triumphs at 8mi so I retired these early in 2019. Peg35 Turbos at 4mi and only sometimes. Hoka Clifton1 2019 never... I hope this Zoomfly3 is ok, I just bought them online bc of a great deal and I needed a halfM race shoe and cannot find Vaporflys nor do I want to spend that kind of money. My rotation of last two years now has been Hoka Clifton 2019 (have couple of pairs) for slower longer runs and Peg35 Turbos for shorter faster stuff and it works great almost forgot abt metatarsalgia issue. Used the Peg35 second fresh pair for Detroit HalfM Oct2019 and made it but early on in race I thought my rt foot was going to stop me due to same metatarsalgia pain. Bought the Zoomfly3 to have for long races and was hoping no foot issues... is this similar to your issue??
