My husband and I returned home after 3 years abroad. We loved eating out. We stayed for 2 months and had different meals almost everyday. The Bowrington mutton curry is my husband’s favourite. Can’t wait to return to HK again soon. Hong Kong is a wonderful walking city. So much to see, so much to eat, and such so much to do.. the city, the walking trails, the islands, not forgetting the shopping!
Thanks for sharing, I think your husband has excellent taste and I hope you get to revisit some of your favourite spots when you return to Hong Kong. It certainly is a great walking city, with so much to eat and do!
It's not uncommon for people there to dine out most of the time, partly due to the long hours that people work and the easy availability of eateries everywhere in HK.

Thanks Sam again for this interesting episode. Yes, very local and traditional Chinese dishes, especially the curry mutton which, only the elderly chefs from the northern parts of China migrated to Hong-Kong can do it. Some family friends took me to a place next to the wet market in Kowloon city which was packed and was/is a Muslim restaurant serving mutton curry. One of the best I’ve ever had. Also have lamb and beef grilled patties which were my favourite. Don’t know the name but might be a branch? Most people coming from China would have based themselves in Kowloon city first. Having googled it, not the same people. This is a halal restaurant but mainstay of beef. It’s on 33-35 tak ku ling road.

@@HongKongHoods Hi Sam. It could possibly be Islam food. I remember the stools outside. Don’t remember inside being so big but it was a few years ago. Definitely remember the beef patties which are amazing! My mum has friends who own a small chain of bakeries a bit further away from centre. Can’t remember the name but they have some of the best baked buns. Most of the ones you get in the chains like maxims etc aren’t a patch on theirs! I’ll tell you the name when I find out
Great video ! The store owner was present in the video wearing the cap with the blue mask on ! His grandfather opened this restaurant back in the 1930s as a street stall on the ground level near the same area to serve the Muslim community that would visit the nearby mosque before they moved the store to the market when it opened in the late 1970s !
Thank you for that, it's so interesting to know these things! I wish I could go back in time and see it as it once was! And yes, the guy in the cap was the owner's son. I was lucky enough to speak to him a little bit, but he didn't want to talk on camera, unfortunately.

I am happy that you love the local food , and I believe that the food culture in HK is very charming although you may not know how to speak and read Chinese😊 By the local Hong Kong citizen
Hi Sam. Coincidentally I came across another food logging Hong Kong based channel today by "ichang". The couple ate the same dishes and spoke to the owner. He said his grandfather store was outside the wet market. Perhaps you guys collaborate in the future. I wonder a scenario where different bloggers appear on scene at the same time does it become a spaghetti western eat off. Any, great videos just patiently await for the next one.
Yes, before they moved into the current cooked food centre, they operated as 大排檔 dai pai dong (sidewalk snack booth) at 陳東里 Chan Tong Ln just outside the cooked food centre.
Hi Iann, sorry for the delay replying to this one, had family in HK last 2 weeks so it's been a little bit hectic! Thank you so much for this, that's such great info and kind of you to share. I've also checked out Ichang. I they're in Hong Kong, I may reach out to them for a collab - and yes, a spaghetti eat off sounds epic!
Thank you Robbie for this information and sorry for the delay replying! This makes me so happy to know... if only I had a time machine to experience Wai Kee when it was in its 大排檔 stage...
Greetings from Oamaru Sth island New Zealand. Fatty browned cubed lamb or mutton with curry and potato with a little ginger casseroled is amazing. Casserole till potato starts to break up.😋
Hi Sam, I'm coming down to Hong Kong for a much needed visit. I've been there numerous times in the past but this will be the first time that I will visit HK on a specialised diet (for health purposes). I hope you can feature restaurants or food joints in HK that offer low-carb/ketogenic diet food staples. I know it's a bit of a tall order since HK/Chinese cuisine is high in carbohydrates (rice, the siu mai, pork buns, etc.). Cheers!
Hi and thanks for watching, hope you enjoy your trip here! Yes, you’re right, unfortunately a lot of Chinese food is high in carbs, so that might be difficult for this channel! Will bear it in mind incase we come across any places such as this though!
Hi, as a local I find a lot of other countries' food that are in HK but got influenced by HK culture and altered to fit HKer's tongue. It might be a good idea to make a video on cuisines that originated from other countries that are influenced by HK. Such as "HK style chili" which is a rich, slightly spicy chili mixed with either chicken, Sirloin, fried fish or pork chop with rice.
Hey, thanks for watching and the kind words! I’m from Manchester, England. Hope you’re enjoying living in HK, and that you find the vids helpful and inspiring!
you should find somewhere else to taste Lamb Belly with Bean Curd Sheet in Claypot (枝竹羊腩煲). It taste much better in mutton curry in term of cooking style
Bowrington Cooked Food Centre, HK. I googled it and on the results page look on the right side and a quick run down of the place along with map. Click map and zoom out. It's in Causeway Bay. Hope this helps.
I'm already in HK two weeks back. Only wish if I can meet Sam as I'm already admired his videos that he did here thus far. I didn't even get to explore all that he did except few places. I'll get to explore Cause Way Bay for his Mutton Curry as my ideal Curry Plates would consist of Potato & Onion regardless of its protein. His Roast Duck is very common all over BBQ Meat shop.

@@HongKongHoods My time was short. Only up to 9 days altogether in HK since I have to visit my spouse and her family in Philippine. My main purpose was to see my parents and other relatives just recently have health condition. I did went to Sha Wang Yip of Nam Cheong Street in Sham Shui Po to have snake soup, but didn't get to see any live snake like you had in one of your videos. I also went to Central Lan Fong Yuen, but they were closed on Sunday so I went back on Wednesday to have my late lunch and the stocking milk tea. I couldn't found Sing Heung Yuen for that Beef Tomato Macaroni or Instant Noodle Soup. One of my friends think is no longer exist there. By my parents Po On Road in So Uk, I have several dinners at Hei Wah and Maxim Cafe and one afternoon tea meal at Ngan Long Cafe. Didn't get to try out the Pork Chop spaghetti you had in one of your videos, but I like to recommend to you the Nasi Lemak in Maxim Cafe. It's one of Malay's popular international dishes consist of Pandan Coconut Rice, Sambal Chilli, Cucumber, Peanut, Anchovies, Hard-Boiled Egg, Served With Chicken Leg or Beef Stews. My meal came with Bak Kuh Teh-Herbal Pork Ribs Soup and Pandan Coconut Pudding. My spouse like that for our dinner meal.

Too bad you couldn't find Sing Heung Yuen, it is a bit tricky to find, but I believe it's still open (walked past a few weeks ago, and Openrice says it's still there). The meals at Ngan Long and Maxim sound fantastic, I am a fan of some of the chain restaurants, especially when they do great foreign food like Nasi Lemak. Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@HongKongHoods I'll try to look for it again next year when I return to HK. I also struggled to look for Lan Fong Yuen when I go back there the 2nd time. Now I know is the 2nd exit down off the escalator. The Central district had lots of uphill with narrow street even my GPS couldn't get me to the right place. I forgot to mention I did had my Satay Beef Oval Shape Bun that came with thin slice of ham in Ngan Long for my tea meal and you can try it out when you have a chance or add to your future video.
As long as it's not pork or pork based or cooked in lard most Hong Kong Muslims aren't that bothered, although I wonder if the halal meat stall in the TST market sells halal meats?
I am not a fan of curry or mutton but I am a huge fan of Sam's Hong Kong Hoods videos. My family was originally from Hong Kong but we immigrated to the US when I was a small child. I grew up in between the U.S and U.K in a mixed Muslim/Christian household, I'm not personally religious at all however with that being said I'm incredibly respectful of what both sides of my family where raised with. though. I eat pork but my Dad doesn't though despite not being a remotely religious person, that's just how he was raised.
Thanks for sharing about your family's mixed heritage! That sounds incredibly culturally rich, and I'm sure it has shaped you. Pork is delicious, but likewise, we respect the choices of those that choose not to eat it. I guess restaurants like this provide a great place where people from many walks of life can converge and enjoy delicious food!
@@HongKongHoods My Dad doesn't mind cooking it though because he's lived in the west for a very long time now, I for one basically grew up on it and still do occasionally eat it, delicious it certainly can be! diversity is a beautiful thing, luckily where I am in the east end of London you get people from all over.
Just order a curry lamb with rice and a single roast duck leg. Then you won't be wasting an extra dish of rice. Happy eating, this place is really a gem in the city.
Don’t think it was possible to be located in Admiralty in 1948. By that time Admiralty was still military owned, unless the owner was asked to cook for the navy solider. 🤔

To British people watching: do you find places in Hong Kong British? To me as a Hongkonger many public buildings built in the 70-80s looks like those in London!
As you know already Eastern China(Xinjang province) is home to Uyghur Muslims. Is there a community of them in Hong kong at all? especially given that this place served Halal food?.
That's a great question, and I'm really not sure about the Uyghur community in Hong Kong... it would be great to know the size of the population here in HK!
Hey! I didn't see a single ethnic muslim person in your video! LOL I wonder how this places dish compares to the well known epic curry mutton restaurant in Kowloon City.
Thanks for watching! There were people of different ethnicities in there, I guess our shots didn’t capture that! If you’re talking about Islam Food in KC, the mutton curry compares well. Different taste to the food as Islam Food mutton curry is slightly thicker I’d say from memory, but both are stellar and fine examples of Islam cuisine in the city!

The curry and duck looked delicious. Thank you enjoyed your vlog.
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it! 💪
Hi Sam, been watching your videos since Japan Travel! Miss your content from Japan but I also love your HK content because I have family there! Thanks for your awesome videos! Just an idea, any thoughts of doing videos in Macau?
Hi there, thanks for watching, and glad you're enjoying the channel! Macau is an excellent idea now the borders are open again. Definitely something we may explore for future videos. Thanks for the suggestion!
Assalamualaykum, I knew you was going to make a video on this place soon! Wai kee is literally my go to place in Hong Kong, the duck with curry & rice + cream soda hits different 😮💨😂
Didn’t try the cream soda but that sounds amazing will definitely do next time! Thank you and glad you enjoyed it! 🙏👍
As a local it's always refreshing to see other introduce Hong Kong in a different perspective nicely done 🎉
Thank you so much, and glad you're enjoying the channel!
Thank you Sam
Thank you Bryant!!
我係本土土生土長嘅香港人今日第一次睇你影片 覺得唔錯
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Sam/Vivienne, you're making me homesick 😢 keep the videos coming
Thank you Timmy! Hope you're enjoying the videos, and glad their reminding you of your hometown!
Great video. Hope you’re ok, you look as if you’ve lost some weight! Returning to HK in October after a 4 year absence. Will definitely try some places you’ve featured on your videos.
Hi Kent, thanks for watching, and yes, doing great, the weight loss is healthy- mostly through jogging! Glad you enjoyed the video, and I’m sure you’ll love your trip here in October, an energy has certainly returned to the city!
Awesome video, thanks for making me hungry with the yummy foods.. Sam..😂😂
Thank you Paddlepop Best! More videos on the way!
it is my hot pick too~~~ also the vegetarian restaurant on the other side is my fave too~~~~
Haven’t tried that place out but will make a note to go! Thank you!
Love a good mutton curry! Will deffo look out for this place the next time in HK 😊
Can’t recommend it enough. Thanks for watching!
I am happy that you love the local food , and I believe that the food culture in HK is very charming although you may not know how to speak and read Chinese😊
By the local Hong Kong citizen
Thank you Peter, I really appreciate your kind words. I love learning more about Hong Kong culture and the language!
Sam Eats It should also be known as Sam gets it! Another outstanding video. Keep going!
Thank you so much HP, your words are much appreciated, and glad you enjoyed the video!
@@HongKongHoods Ichang and her hubby have recently shifted to Malaysia.
Greetings from Oamaru Sth island New Zealand.
Fatty browned cubed lamb or mutton with curry and potato with a little ginger casseroled is amazing. Casserole till potato starts to break up.😋
Oooh sounds incredible. Thanks for watching!
This is my favourite joint since 30 years ago. So just happened I was there for lunch today!
Amazing! Hope your meal was as good as good as always!
@@HongKongHoods It was great, they never disappoint!
@@Letsrock0823 Glad to hear it!
Awesome ‼️
Thank you!
Will bear it in mind incase we come across any places such as this though!
you should try the hong kong fried side dishes, such as fried cabbage with garlic, garlic spareribs
Thanks for the tip, noted for next time I visit!
Thanks for the suggestions Felix, HK-style chili sounds great. Check our other videos out, you might something that you like in one of them!
Ohh I miss HK especially the yam cha every morning ❤
We love yum cha too! Thanks for watching!
Had the roasted duck dish last month. It was so delicious and the skin was crispy. Recommended!
Brilliant- glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Sam. I love your accent! Where is it coming from? I’m from the US, currently living in hk!
Hey, thanks for watching and the kind words! I’m from Manchester, England. Hope you’re enjoying living in HK, and that you find the vids helpful and inspiring!
good video mate
Cheers Joseph!
you should find somewhere else to taste Lamb Belly with Bean Curd Sheet in Claypot (枝竹羊腩煲).
It taste much better in mutton curry in term of cooking style
Thanks for the suggestion Adrian, that sounds delicious! 🤤
Where is the store located?
Bowrington Cooked Food Centre, HK. I googled it and on the results page look on the right side and a quick run down of the place along with map. Click map and zoom out. It's in Causeway Bay. Hope this helps.
near time square, causeway bay, the market is located on the other side of the bridge
You did your homework Kiyoshi, thank you!
Absolutely correct!
Oh yes I traveled for 1.5 hours from New Territories to that market place building in Causeway Bay just to eat the mutton curry there 👍
Thanks for sharing Patrick! Hope you enjoyed it and it was worth the journey!
Would that be winter melon and not fuzzy (hairy) melon?
yes, it's winter melon, not hairy melon.
Good looking out- but the menu that day said hairy melon. They are really similar though
Thanks for the kind words, and really hope you are enjoying your Hong Kong trip! Yes, that's a very good point. I hope you get to try some more great foods that we've recommended, or other great restaurants, too
@@HongKongHoods My time was short.
@@kurlexchoi Wow, sounds like you did a lot of eating! Sorry to hear of your relatives' health conditions.
OMG, I can almost taste that deliciousness :o
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it!
I love your expressions!
Thanks for watching!
Remarkable 🎉🎉👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
You do you know stuff 😊👍🏻
Thanks for watching! 😊
As long as it's not pork or pork based or cooked in lard most Hong Kong Muslims aren't that bothered, although I wonder if the halal meat stall in the TST market sells halal meats?
Thanks for that observation! Not sure about TST market. I saw what I thought was a halal meat stall near Haiphong Road... maybe it's that one.
My mouth is watering!
Glad you enjoyed it. The food was delicious!
fabulous
Thank you!
hope u do some macau vids too
Noted Wilfred. May look into it now the travel restrictions have been lifted.
Oh is between wan chai and causeway bay I never know it turn into a food centre will try when I go back which will be next year
Definitely recommend, you’re in for a treat Alice!
I am not a fan of curry or mutton but I am a huge fan of Sam's Hong Kong Hoods videos. My family was originally from Hong Kong but we immigrated to the US when I was a small child. We have been back to Hong Kong a few times to visit relatives but the last time we were there was about 10 years ago. All these food videos makes me want to make a trip back and try all the delicious food! Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you Kim, I'm really happy you're enjoying our videos, even if mutton curry isn't your favourite. Glad the videos are inspiring you to take a trip back now that you're living in the US. Hong Kong travel restrictions have ended (as I'm sure you know), so travelling here is once again feasible!
@@Benya9400 I hear that about the east end- have never been but would love to visit sometime!
Just order a curry lamb with rice and a single roast duck leg. Then you won't be wasting an extra dish of rice. Happy eating, this place is really a gem in the city.
Thanks for watching, and good tip!
Thank u for using "comprising" properly the way giraffedata would have wanted
No problem. I really stuck my neck out with that one. 🦒
I think this Wai Kee food center was at Chung King Mansions in Admiralty, Hong Kong Island. Est 1948.
There is old and new Chung king mansions which both is in Kowloon Nathan road
Wow, thank you for this!
Need to research, I didn’t know that!
Don’t think it was possible to be located in Admiralty in 1948. By that time Admiralty was still military owned, unless the owner was asked to cook for the navy solider. 🤔
Looks great. Looks akin to Indian curry.
It was very similar in some respects. Thanks for watching Nate, hope you’re well!
Their mutton curry and roast duck are to die for 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Better than some so called Michelin starred restaurants 🫢🫢🫢🫢
Thanks for watching Ken, and definitely agree!
Don’t know why we never been there ! Probably we think they don’t have air con
Not sure to be honest Julian, we filmed before it got hot in Hong Kong, so wasn't paying too much attention. A brilliant local gem regardless though- definitely recommend!
did you survive eating curry mutton and roasted goose same time lol having seen your new vid for ages
I did... just about. I was pretty full at the end of this one, as always haha
@@HongKongHoods is fine you are so skinny lol
I am from Thailand , do you like Thailand ? Welcome to Bangkok Thailand
Thanks for watching! I love 🇹🇭 Thailand, visited Bangkok, Chiangmai and Phuket!
as a HongKonger I personally prefer Beef Brisket curry with deep fried potatoes inside
Fair enough, that's a very solid choice too!
鵝頸橋,街市咖哩,同以前無得比,而家啲㗎喱,又硬又唔香,同以前無得比,唔食無損失。
Thanks for watching!
billion 😂
you are not only a Gwai Lo,really a hong kong citizen 💪
Haha thank you! I'm certainly a mixture of the two now I've been living here and investigating local culture for a few years!
Are you also a rapper?? Your hands are so active 😉
Yes. They call me “Saminem”.
Chinese dishes one of best in the world ❤
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
The best thing if Wei kee is the goose wing
The goose was epic, to be fair. Can’t fault you, although liked the mutton slightly more for its relative uniqueness
That's a great question, and I'm really not sure about the Uyghur community in Hong Kong... it would be great to know the size of the population here in HK!
the hui ethnic (chinese muslim) in hong kong resides around the kowloon mosque area
You should eat the duck first then curry
Thanks for the tip. Either way, both dishes were delicious!
@@HongKongHoods because the curry is strong and spicy which affect the taste of the duck 😊
@@HongKongHoods That's the one! another great video. cheers
sadly, the old Hong Kong is gone forever!!
There is renewed energy now the travel restrictions and mandatory mask wearing is finally over! Thanks for watching!
惠記very famous on the Goose and curry Lamb. How can he know this local restaurant? He shouldn’t order the goose with rice only the goose. He ex-chef opened a restaurant besides him
Thanks Gordon! We found this restaurant the same way we always do, by keeping our ear to the ground and doing lots of research! That’s a good tip on the roasted goose, certainly could have done without the rice with that- window for next time. Hope you’re enjoying our channel!
If you go Hong Kong, don’t eat in Hong Kong Island but go to explore New territory like Tuen Mun , food much better ❤
I agree that in sticking just to Hong Kong Island, you'll miss out on so much great food in other parts of Hong Kong - but there are also some great spots on the Island!
不過如果能夠講廣東話就最好或影片有雙語版本(這是係我嘅寶貴意見)
Unfortunately I am not bilingual, so that is difficult. But thank you for the suggestion!
Why I don't feel like Hongkong look beautiful?
Hong Kong is memorable, impressive… but not always beautiful!
