The Shōgun finale has premiered, and we have reached the end of the show. This is my series review and finale reaction, as we discuss these incredible characters and a divisive episode 10. Did you watch on FX or Hulu? Set in the 17th Century, the story is told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai, while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga's struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain, or Shogun.

Its not a flash forward. Old Blackthorn is a dream. Its Anjin's dream. (Name of episode) He remembers the dream throughout the episode as he realizes its not going to become reality. Finally dropping the cross (seen in his dream) in the sea and truly accepting that his life will remain in Japan. This show is an amazing creation, and literally a work of art.

Sad (that it has ended), stunned, and totally satisfied by this limited series. Mariko is an all-time great character and "Crimson Sky" is one of the best episodes of television in history.

I think it’s pretty evident that the old Blackthorne vision was just his dream.
    1) episode title “a dream of a dream”
    2) John woken up by Yabushige during first dream.
    3) John woken up by the doctor during second dream and flashbacks of Mariko.
    4) John looking back at his dream before deciding to commit seppuku. That scene he basically tells you that he let go of his old dream of having a successful campaign into Japan.l and dying of old age back in Europe.
    5) Him letting go of Mariko’s cross into the water which was the same cross in his dream.

I think one can't just justify this show in enough words, the parallels, the poetic theme, dialogues and such clever writing. They took a unique approach of bare minimum action, wan't a fan at first, but damn they got me, and the fact it's most of the big plot points are taken from real life blew my mind, respect for creators 8.8/10 for me, the finale was just so damn good, the value/meaning it provided to the whole show WHEW

The showrunners and creators confirmed this morning that no Season 2 is happening unless they find a story they think works. Honestly, I get it and they made the right decision. I’m gonna binge this show again in like a month it’s that good. I don’t do that with most if not any show I watched. Andor and this got me hooked that hard. This show has a a way with conversation that may have developed characters in the best way possible that I’ve ever seen in my life. Like you said Austin… masterpiece!🙏🏻

Success and money trump all. It was on record that the Joker movie wasn't going to have a sequel until it grossed a billion dollars. Bet money there will be more Shogun, whether it's a sequel, prequel, or spin-off.

The most beautiful part of the finale for me was how many people were affected by Mariko’s death, either by regretting it (Ishido, the Regents, Yabusige), remembering her poetry (Lady Ochiba, Toranaga) remembering her words (Blackthorne, Fuji), or honoring her wishes (Toranaga, the Monk Alvito).
Toranaga’s vision (and four-dimensional chess game) was finally realized, but the show never forgot that Mariko was the true heart of the story, transforming everyone by her life and by her death, and destroying Toranaga’s enemies in a way an army never could. She was such an unforgettable character in a such a wonderful show.
Thank you, Mariko-dono. You are the beautiful flower that finally fell, but, thankfully, you have been carried by the wind for all of the world to see and cherish, and you will never be forgotten.

Agree, it’s been a while that a show that just left me empty like this, it’s emotionally riveting, also for people who felt disappointed there’s no final battle, audience have to remember, Toranaga isn’t the one that craves conflict, Ishido, our main antagonist of the series, is the one who wants to start the war, that itself already speaks the theme of the story

One of my favorite scene in the last episode is Mariko's funeral. Has Toranaga learns what happenned in Osaka, he closes is eyes and the scene cuts to a wide shot from the sky slowly getting closer to the funeral. That and the catholic chant in the back was absolutely hypnotising. This scene was amazing.

The novel or the 1980 miniseries adaptation doesn't include the decisive, large scale Battle Of Sekigahara so why should I or anyone else expect it to materialize just for this series? The total production budget of Shogun (without said battle) so far, has been a closely guarded secret, but considering the quality level and authenticity of the rest of the series' VFX, including it, would have ballooned the show's cost considerably... Historical records state that an estimated 160,000 men fought in that battle. That's one helluva lot of CG and rendering time ergo... no battle.

I thought this series was fantastic! It was a slow burn, but man, every scene was built so meticulously, poetically and haunting, that I was engrossed the entire time.
The 3 leads were absolutely fantastic but I gotta say Anna Sawai as Mariko-Sama absolutely stole this show! Looking forward to seeing more of her, especially in the Monarch series.

The novel has ended, but Japanese history is going to be interesting from now on. It would be a shame to end the Shogun series without seeing the battles with Ishido's army (Battle of Sekigahara), Ochiba who defected to Toranaga and led the unification of Japan, and later Toranaga's (Autumn Siege) (Winter Siege) where Ochiba and her son attacked Osaka Castle. They should definitely make a season 2.

It was good; not a masterpiece or much of an adaptation, but complete in itself. Very well written and acted, but it didn't really do the novel as much justice as the original miniseries. The approach was a little too Mariko-centric, but it was still good. As with anything now with an adult level of achievement, the glowing hyperbole is just way over the top.

Yada, yada, yada, Sorry I can't listen to more of this B.S. Let me start off by saying if you liked this show great I do not blame you or necessarily disagree with you. How ever as a fan of the book this was very sub par. Yea Yea it looked great. However they changed to much for me to get interested in it. I have no aversion to reading subtitles but why all the Japanese dialogue? Not enough native Japanese cast that could handle the English language? Now before you get your drawers in a bunch and want to throw labels at me for asking a question. I seem to remember in the book Blackthorne and Mariko primarily spoke Portuguese possibly some Spanish, definitely some Latin in mor private conversations. But it's been 55 years maybe I remember it wrong. I often watch Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese TV and movies subtitles do not bother me at all. Also subtitles is way superior to over dubbing. Either way in my opinion they changed the story from primarily a romance story to a political drama. I was not a fan. Damm I still gotta say visually it was stunning.

It has so much intellect, so much humor(?), and so much heart. Everyone involved should get Emmy consideration!!
All the Blackthorne and Fuji scenes in the finale were heart-wrenching! The loss of Mariko seemingly left a hole in the world. And Toranaga was a cold as ice p.i.m.p.
