The naivety of the first marble machine was it's charm. Don't forget that! I loved that you had to struggle with it, and it made extraneous noises and wasn't perfect.

I think it's a fair self-criticism; he made a machine to make music because he's a musician, then he met people who have as much passion for machines as he has for music. Now he's using what he learned to do both things better than before. He seems humble rather than self depreciating, to me.

I am overcome with emotion every single time I play the marble machine song. This video helps me understand some of the "why" - the fact that the machine was able to work once was a miracle. It is not every day you have the opportunity to record a miracle. I am telling myself now that the marble machine saw the camera and the microphones that day and decided that it must do what it was built to do. The marble machine exhausted its potential - nothing that could have gone wrong went wrong in stark contrast to Murphy's Law. In fact, the exact opposite happened, and the marble machine was able to deliver its one and only song to the world. The song is both haunting and hopeful; jubilant and lamenting. Marble machine - I will honor and remember your sacrifice until that day comes that the earth shall reclaim my body, and the wind shall carry my soul to the realm of the dead.
    Amen.

hey, no matter how much issues it had, it should still have a special place in your heart! and besides, its still quite a feat to pull off, making a musical instrument which can play an entire song on its own. and just look at yourself still being critical but secretly proud of the old machine. thats the way to go!

A great artist is their own biggest critic many times. Where you see the failures, everyone else sees the amazing parts. Even if it spits marbles and skips notes at times, it still works pretty decent, it seems, for such a complex thing built by hand. Why not throw a program on it and see what it does? Joost looks like he's stoked to grind it!

I absolutely love that you took into account the individual acoustic properties of different kinds of rice. Such a delightfully silly consideration for such a delightfully silly machine!

And he is wearing the gloves to handle it much like he would with other pieces in the Museum, I don't think that is required for this piece :D

I really like your first marble machine. You can be very proud of it! Of course, every design can be improved. But the fact that you created this from scratch, just by having an idea shows the real genius!
