We moved into our new auction property but it's WORSE than we thought!!

- Hi all! In this week's video, I take you back to WEEK 1 where we'd just collected the keys for our new auction property, moved in some of our essential stuff like cleaning products, and disinfected and scrubbed the place from TOP TO BOTTOM because it was far worse than we anticipated!!!
This took a WHOLE WEEK because while cleaning, we discovered something really gross in the oven and the house FULL of mouse droppings!!
We also made some good discoveries, which I hope you enjoy... then work on mouse-proofing the house ready for the colder weather, which is likely to be an ongoing job.
Hope you enjoy it!

I've re signed up,I guessed you needed the money right now lol and you make me howl sometimes !! Your definitely entertaining ! I want to see a Carpenter's Daughter calender next year please! You modeling dead mice and mice bedding would be enough to cheer up any gloomy winters evening!! Lol 😆

@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK dear vikkie, just found you this morning and i think i've caught up with current events. your situattion is very encouraging to me (recently retire architect with garden designer wife) as we attempt our own renovation here in london. different circumstances of course, but lots of transferable issues/ideas to share. have you fixed your layout plans for house and garden? id be interested in sharing ideas with you. where can I see your existing/proposed plans? will you be seeking planning permission? what is your local authority?
Hi Vikkie, areas outside to check:
1. Where water, boiler and any other pipes come into the house.
2. If you have an outside central heating boiler, remove the cover and check for gaps in there where the pipes go into the house.
3. Air bricks - any hole the size of a pencil head as small as 3mm, then mice can get through it.
4. The bottom of outside doors - if there is a gap beneath the bottom of the door .... try and seal it along the bottom with a draught excluder if one is missing.
5. Drainage pipes - check under any unsealed garden slabs where down pipe gutters run and connect into the ground and gutters / down pipes.
6. Observe carefully any entrances or places in the house where your dog sniffs. This is a good indicator.
7. Eaves - these blighters can climb, but as your loft needs ventilation, try and use copper breathable mouse mesh. The mesh hurts their teeth when they try to gnaw through to inside your home.
8. Any small holes or larger 3mm or more in your house external walls.
Plug all gaps / holes with copper mouse / rodent mesh - search on Amazon, or for air-bricks, buy metal grill covers with 3mm max holes so that ventilation can still get through.
Note: I am no expert but I was once advised that rats and mice do not invade the same place at the same time. Often you can smell rats as they smell of ammonia, and they make a kind of whistling noise.
If you need to get rid of rats, soak cloths in ammonia and place around your home where you think they may be frequenting, e.g. the garage. They will not return.
For the 22 mice that we caught and killed in our former old cottage, our wee Beddy Whippet dog alerted us to their entrance area by sniffing under the outside porch door. There was a gap there where they were getting in.
Also, beware living next to fields where horse manure is being stock-piled. Rats love it. Get a few cats ...
We purchased two Victor electronic mouse traps from Amazon, and set them up each day and evening in our cottage with a small piece of Mars bar (mice smell and like sweet things) inside them. The mice were mostly caught and zapped (electrocuted) during the night. There is a green indicator light on these traps to alert you to a catch. Sometimes the lights do not flash. You just need to check the traps inside visually a few times during the day, or more often if it is a larger infestation.
I do not know how you could stomach doing all that cleaning. This was a reminder of the horror and dread and uncomfortableness of knowing these blighters were in our former home, and we only had 22 of them. You appear to have many dozens - sorry to say ...
Please always use a mask as these blighters cause serious disease in humans. Do not breathe in their odour.
Check your bed cover for unusual wet patches. These beasts can clamber all over your bed - very eeky, and again, do not breathe in ...
I hope this is helpful. Stay strong and very well done!! Love your videos. Love from Scotland ❤ X.
If you’re filling in gaps from mice/rats think about mixing broken glass into the filler/cement it is one of the few things they can’t easily get through, unlike concrete or metal. It’s an idea from my dad, who was a builder, and it’s never seen me wrong
Thanks!!! I've never thought of that!!!
Steel wool is another great barrier....
When clearing mouse and rat droppings and nesting material, please wear a N95 mask, you don't want to mess with Hantavirus!
😳 thanks for the heads up for next time 😀
Omg, I'm a carpenter and a good tip is to use carpet tiles cut to size on top of your wall units, just remove now and again to hoover off the dust. Easy clean. Looks like your going to be busy..enjoyed the video 📹.
Ooh... I like that idea! It's not nice scrubbing things clean while up a ladder!
And if you can't get carpet tile, just cut up a cardboard box - works almost as well. @@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
We put newspaper sheets on top of our cupboards. Just chuck them in the compost bin when they’re falling apart, shake the dust outside until then.
You are made of sterner stuff than I will ever be...After the bedding and dead mouse...I'd have burned the place down and started from scratch. Wishing you success with the whole project!!!
I really wanted to rip the whole kitchen out, but right now, I need a kitchen until we know what we're doing and have sold the boat to update it :)
What type of people leave a house in such a disgraceful state.
Think your doing an amazing job...pure elbow grease! Probably an elderly person who's gone into care lived there. Looking forward to your progress!
They couldn't help it with this one. The lady who lived here died!
You're pretty much right! She was in her 90s and had stomach cancer, but was keeping the place nice and tidy... even garden work almost until the end+
Always wear a mask and gloves when dealing with mouse poop and nests. This looks like something you will really get your teeth into, looking forward to the journey.
I second this, had rat infestation in the attic and ripping old insulation, discarding dead rats/mice and hoovering poo definitely needed eye & mask protection. You do not want an infection from mice/rats.
Agree completely. Proper protection is critical. In addition, there may be mold exposure in an unoccupied, unheated house, that is not obvious at first glance. It is not safe to do this work without taking safety precautions.
Agree totally, except please don't "get your teeth into it"!

A very good video!
Peppermint oil is excellent at keeping rats and mice out of areas, but it’s best to seal up any holes.
Damaged air bricks and similar make easy access.
If you have any ivy or similar that they can climb up and get in via roof I would remove it!
Nothing in your traps is a good sign but to be certain, leave out some peanuts or peanut butter on some card on the floor in various rooms as a test.
We had rats, then mice, when we first moved in (our house is next to a field where wheat is grown) and it took some effort to evict them, but closing up all access points was the key.
As an added bonus, peppermint oil keeps spiders away too
I second that. Anything strong-smelling can keep them away for a while, but never permanently. I often spray a nasty can of air freshener under the kick boards which puts them off for a good while. We also have an oil burner.
Total respect getting stuck into the kitchen, you worked HARD...!! Im 66 - but been there with house refurbs! x
Thanks so much 🥰 You've got to get stuck in, haven't you? 😀
We had a huge problem with mice in our previous house and tried various traps and was constantly catching them. Annoyingly we used to hear them under the floor , scraping and chewing . Someone gave us an electronic repellent device , I was a bit dubious but my god did it work. We ended up getting another two and had them in various parts of the house and they certainly kept them away. I left traps out just in case but they were never touched. So I'd definitely recommend them especially with you being in the open countryside . I commend your efforts in cleaning out the kitchen area and I know you will be replacing the kitchen eventually but yuk . I did laugh when you produced those scouring pads priced at 5p 🤣 . Good haul £27 and that's just the kitchen lol
Can you share which electronic device you used ? Because most are utterly useless
AMZ brand are first class off Amazon , stopped out annual friends visiting immediately .😊
We moved into our house last December and went through a lot of the stuff you are in the first few weeks. We had shrews and mice. Was a lot of work clearing the place out. We got a cat that lives outside and we haven't seen any mice in the last 11 months. Best of luck with your new home.
That sounds very promising! Thanks for the hope 😀
We've got loads of cats here and still have mice (did have anyway) They outwit all the cats. And we have some good mousers too.
@@NM-gy6tx we did some other work around the house to remove any potential access to rodents. There was a lot of plants growing up the house. We removed all of this and made every effort to find anywhere they could be getting in. Kept doors and low level windows closed etc. It wasn't just the cat I guess but she has done and continues to monitor the perimeter of the house. She was originally a wild cat (born in a hedge in rural Ireland) that we took in. Don't know if that makes a difference in her hunting abilities
Good luck with this, I'll be watching your progress. I'd be tempted to wear a quality dust mask when doing the cleaning just in case of any mould spores.
Hi, we had an extension built which involved taking down an external brick wall as it was no longer needed. Inside of the cavity had been foam filled. Mice had been using it like a super highway up into the roof space. Nesting areas and the runs were visible throughout. Fascinating to see. Cables above had been chewed so we were lucky not to have had a fire.
No1 Remove any attractant.
No2 Seal gaps and entry points
No3 Spray diluted peppermint oil along the door thresholds and other impossible to seal places - mice hate it and move on.
No4 Forget the cat, unless you starve it it won’t work. It will just get fat and lazy.
No5 Plug in electronic deterrents don’t, in my experience work for long. The mice must get used to the sound waves.
No6 Set traps as an ongoing indicator.
No7 Moving mice location once caught is only giving somebody else the problem.
Don’t forget mice are not nice fur balls, they are vermin that carry diseases that will effect your health!!!
We have recently done the almost exact thing you have. Bought the bungalow of our dreams with a decent garden that had been left for several years before we bought it (1975 build). Needed a new roof and most internal walls moving.
If I were you I would buy an old caravan and live in your garden and keep all your stuff in storage until you've got all the interior walls where you want them and all the infrastructure done. We owned ours a year before we were able to move into it. Watching your progress with interest. Good luck.
We found very hot water and Screwfix heavy duty degreaser the most cost effective cleaning products.
Mice are incontinent so anywhere they go there will be droppings - and they go everywhere! They prefer fields to houses in warmer weather and if it's a mild winter they may be less of a problem but cut the grass short immediately around the house to form a deterrent. They are drawn by warm air escaping the cracks and holes and will burrow towards any warmth so it's just doggedly (sorry) finding anywhere that might give them access. They're not keen on occupied buildings so the more lived-in the house the more deterred they'll be. Can you create a clean temporary kitchen or at least food prep area in the utility room? It would allow you to keep cleaning or removing the worst affected areas in the kitchen - mouse droppings and urine can be quite nasty so definitely mask and gloves. Friends have found used coffee granules and peppermint spray some help but physical barriers that can't be gnawed through are best. Having been through the same things I hope you don't mind that I'm really enjoying seeing you deal with them and it's so satisfying watching you get the place clean and habitable again.
From experience and seeing that mouse or rat poo I'd say strip the roof out NOW. They are going down from attic and in-between rafters and ceiling into the house. Check the drains too. Don't waste money on traps it won't work. You need a pest controller to do at least 3 weeks work in and around the house. Take up all the roof insulation, cos when summer comes you won't get rid of the smell.
You've taken me back three years - filthy brown kitchen, cleaning products running out, 'interesting flooring', mouse poo and the obligatory velcro dog 😂. If it's any consolation we're still only midway through the journey 😂
Vicki, sorry I would just rip the whole thing out, get some cheap units as a temp kitchen, buy a second hand cooker and start clean. Still think hire a static and gut the place.
Glad you pulled the kick boards 😯 good luck
A trick that keeps mice out is pack entrance holes with steelwool course they dont like to chew through it.😅
Really enjoyed the video. Fair play for your positive attitude in a simulation like this, must be a nightmare finding all them droppings! I think leave the kickers off for now, that way the little buggers will have one less place to hide! :) anyway, looking forward to the next video :)
you've done all the right things - remove any sources of food and bedding. Using bleach and anything else with ammonia/semi caustic properties for cleaning under and behind cupboards should help too. Buys you time to plug all the holes anyway!
Just found your channel and subscribed :) I used to work in pest control and mice will fit through any hole large enough - which is the size of a pencil top. Get down to the hardware shop and buy a roll of wire wool and pack it in the hole (they dont like the feel of it on their whiskers), then get some expandable foam and squirt that in too (they hate the taste of this). You need to be thorough or they will be back as soon as they smell food again. You should be wearing gloves and a mask too when you were clearing the nests and droppings out. Im off to play catch up.
We have bought land out in the country, and we spend weekends out there working on it. The dinky little trailer that we stay in is impossible to mouse-proof; we have given up on fixing the holes in the walls and subfloor. There's just nothing solid to attach a patch to. So every Friday night, I sanitize the kitchen surfaces, unpack the cooler, pop a bag of popcorn, eat most of it, and bait the traps. They love popcorn. Every time we catch one, I walk it next door to my brother-in-law, who feeds it to his snakes.
Circle of life... 😁
That sounds like a non stop nightmare. I'd be tempted to buy one of those steel containers to live in if the mice were that bad, but it sounds like you're happy with the timeshare and routine 😀
If you can put a biro in a hole a mouse can pass through it. They hate wire wool. Stuff holes around pipes with coarse wire wool and you will deter the mice.
I have found the humane traps to be very effective with peanut butter in. Sometimes you have to adjust the balance a bit. I sometimes sellotaped coins to the trap. Be prepared to sellotape the traps shut & transport them at least a mile away, possibly over a river, to make sure they do not just walk home.
So I was working in Muscat, Oman and we had an oven and given the temperature was usually above 25c we didn't use it. One time on of the people we shared the accommodation wanted to show off to the senior management. The chilli was okay but the smell from the kitchen was terrible, given I was driving I didn't drink at all (best rule for anyone). After dropping of the senior managers and scoping my colleagues back into our vehicle we got home. I turned on the oven again, at a low temperature and heard scuttling. I turned off the oven and closed the kitchen door and put tape across it. I called the 24hr support line and told them the smell and sounds. The next day the oven and fridge/freezer had been replace d as rats had taken up residence...
Sugar soap is an amazing cleaning product... cuts though everything.
Also when did ANYTHING cost 5p?
I wouldn't even bother cleaning that oven, straight to the tip with it! 🤮
Humane trap - until the darn things won’t go into it, & then have to resort to bucket traps. Don’t like doing that but needs must.
We had 9 mice in the house at one point - coming in through a hole in the wall that we couldn’t see, behind pipes, that had been left by a plumber. It wasn’t until I switched the light on in the Utility room & saw one jump up behind the pipes under the boiler & disappear, that I realised.
I filled it with cement but then we still had several trapped in the house. It took ages to remove them all, & yes I had to resort to bucket traps in the end for the more wily ones.
Now we are contending with a squirrel between the floors, crashing about, boinging pipes & chewing. There may be a hundredweight of nuts in there, too. I’m gonna have to get some chicken wire to put in the external gaps where he’s getting in (it’s an old ex-pub with ‘issues’ we can’t afford to rectify).
Congratulations on the new house. I can't wait to see what you do to it next.
Well you know mice can do cavities don't you?
Now that you are worried I have a mouse proof filling tip ....... Wire Wool!
You can get this dirt cheap delivered to your door by the next day, but when choosing the coarser the grade the better, leave your fine stuff for cleaning pipes before soldering! Wedge a clump into the hole you want to fix and use the filler of your choice (expanding foam works well) but make sure your wire wool is below the surface so you can smooth/ trim it off neatly!
Decent quality draws like you have there are more easily cleaned by lifting them out and using the work top as a bench. An ideal working height!
Bleach is an excellent cleaner (frowned upon by HSE, but good non the less).
Cleaning your oven is easier if you warm it up first (don't have it on with your cleaner still on it and it should not be too hot to touch eather definitely warm not hot!
You electrician should have talked to you about fitting a DP switch at your meter position as your Consumer Unit is more than 6' away and "not in the same room" (outside counts as a room for this).
I am sure you have already checked the outside walls for holes ...... airbricks are essential when fitted but any broken ones need replacing to prevent your little friends returning as the weather gets worse! Also check your soffits and roof are sealed up tight to the walls. Your roof does have vents to allow air to circulate in your loft so don't block those up. You can get plastic vents that slide into the gap between overlapping barriers below roof slates. This allows extra ventilation up there at little cost!
You can easily find your stop tap if you have access to a "Cat and Genny". These devices can be hired by the day and are usually used to find underground cables prior to excavations. Simply clip the induction loop round any copper pipe (cold and the nearer the stop tap the better. Set the cat to receive the ping from the genny and sweep the ground around the perimeter of your house until you pick up the ping (usually a Beep Beep Beep noise) that mirrors the noise the genny makes. You can then follow the line of the pipe out until you reach your fence line and you should see a small square grid which is where Your pipe starts and the UU pipe ends. It should also have a stop cock incorporated (sometimes this is deep and you need a "T bar") This is good to know if you have problems with your own Stop Tap! Your Stop Tap should be on the opposite side of the wall to where the pipe you just detected runs to!
Or you could ask UU (or whoever supplies your water) to give you a printout of their drawings, but they do charge and they are not always eather accurate or even there at all!
Again I am conscious of going on a bit, but I hope this is useful ;o)
I'd be wearing a whole forensic suit and respirator!!
Oh Vicky I changed my mind about keeping it and giving it a lick of paint(kitchen). Burn it. But buy yourselves some of the white decorators suits to keep you somewhat 😝cleaner . Best of luck, your doing great 👍🏻
Planning my new kitchen as we speak 😅
Good luck with this. Reminds me so much of our renovation which I mentioned in your previous video.
We ended up getting a couple of shelter cats (sisters) and the mice problem vanished overnight almost. Something about the imperceptible smell of a cat…
Ten years later and they’re still alive - the cats I mean lol - and the only mice we get is the very occasional one they bring home and bat about the kitchen
Cats really do sound like a win win !!
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Honestly they’re so hygienic and zero hassle. We’ve got a golden retriever and he’s some amount of maintenance lol
I think not all mice are deterred by cats. Years ago we had four cats in the house and several times a mouse came out right in front of them and scurried about.
You are a Wellcome break from the normal that is England lately.
🇮🇪🇪🇺😏
I would have been tempted to remove thd doors and draws to clean them outside.
The gaps need to be filled with cement mixed with sharp stuff. Any small gaps you need flexibility use wirewool dripping in peppermint oil.
Great video once again showing all the hard work and mess , odd place to have a safe, but £27 was a good haul and those Brillo pads should be on antiques roadshow 😂 you’re doing a great job at making it amusing too , you have me hooked into watching 👍Graham
🌸 what did mice do, steal pound coins lol 😂
In the USA we have mask up and glove up when removing mice & rats droppings due to Hantavirus!
You need to get 'the big cheese' bait bags and also the plastic bait boxes. We have been using these in our garage and loft with good results. Mice are difficult to get rid of once you have them and cause no end of havoc. They make my nerves bad 😄 Personally I would have ripped that kitchen out but it will be lovely to see what you do. Good work!! 😊
Thanks for this, if they come back I'll take a further look into this, it's been a couple months and no sign of their return yet, I did get some plug in deterrents and sealed up all the entry points I could find.
The kitchen seems OK at the minute, but I do plan on changing it up, so I still could end up ripping it all out in the future.
I don't know if the hantavirus is an issue in the UK, but wearing a good mask would be advisable
Apparently it's rare here in the UK. I'd never heard of it until I shared this video
Use pepperment oil on cotton balls....rodents hate the smell! Also cinnamon.
hi Vikkie any holes you find dont cement them they will chew through it use bathroom silicone they will not chew it and get yourself some rodent plug in radars for each room in the house these will deter them and they work .all the best from wayne.
I live out in the sticks as well and get lots of mice trying to overwinter with me. I've got some of the same traps you showed and not caught anything with them yet (only had them a week) but I've also got some of the black rocker type of live capture traps that seem to be very popular with mice. Two big drawbacks of the second type is that they can be triggered by just the slightest touch and it's impossible to tell if there is actually anything inside without opening them up. Lost count of the number of times I've walked the mile up the track to where I release them to find that there is nothing inside. Oh, by the way I've found that the crunchy type of peanut butter works best and if you can get some of the oil in there - really attracts them.
This is going to be endlessly entertaining, but you've got gump girl!
Welcome to countryside living, mice and rats can be a problem, assuming there's a farmers field close enough, go with humane traps, and release them well away from the house, but you will probably have some access holes to hunt down and cover with anti rodent mesh ;)
Omg not a chance I would have crowbars that kitchen out 🤢🤢🤮🤮😱😱😱😱 I couldn't cope , your so brave and amazing , but that house has got so much potential, Good luck
Another thought (following my comment from last weeks video) ... If you are are going to redo the utilty room, is it worth moving the rising main to an (accessible) location in here especially if some outside work to fit an external stop-cock is needed. Its present location underneath the toilet soil pipe in the en-suite is unreasonably inconvenient.
It does feel like a more logical solution, and never thought we could do it. I'll look into it!
It must have been so satisfying to clean that house! I vote for a humane trap, but you can’t keep mice out of a house, because they can get through small gaps. My first year in this house, I tried to keep decorative corn cobs in a closet. Needless to say, mice ate all of the dry kernels. Luckily, I had a dog who was a mouser.
😅 Well, I'm hoping the AMZ sonic plug in devices that someone recommend will keep them at bay. Not seen any sign of them yet 🤞🤞🤞
You found the mouse savings bank!
Yes 😅😅
You need to fill the gaps and any mouse holes with steel wool before you use the silica. Mice can’t chew through steel wool but the will chew through the silica. They can get through tiny gaps. We live near the bugs so get field mice and the even come in through where the waste pipe for our toilet goes out through the wall.
CAT required........maybe Sylvester, maybe a D9!
“Eww eww what’s in my hair?!?” 😂 classic - so, I’m thinking, once it’s all cleaned up Hans needs a few little sisters - kittens! 😂❤ x
Eeeww... that was gross lol!!! Hans will need some convincing... but maybe that's why lots of our neighbours have cats around here 😅
Oh you poor things, that looked rough.
My mice came in through one single drill hole that was to allow a new electric cable in the attic expanding an existing cable space for a bigger capacity cable-, so already in the house envelope, no new holes to outside. But we never figured out how they got in the house in the first place because they weren’t there before, and after we filled the hole were gone again. But i caught seven over Christmas a couple of years ago. They liked lime and coconut loaf…..
One of the best things I’ve found so far re home bodges was the kitchen extractor was venting via a bit of sewer pipe into the wall cavity. Completely unconnected to the perfectly functional trunking on the other side of the wall that it was supposed to be connected to. We only found out when the oven caught fire and I had to rip it all out and start again…..
When we first got our allotment plot we had to get used to the mice and rats I put my birdfood in a wooden box and they managed to gnaw their way through it ...I guess the mice won't like the fact someone is moving around in the house now and also the smell of your dog will help to put them off
Your kitchen looks like ours when we moved into our bungalow 14 years ago,it was like stuck in the late 70's. It had sat empty for over 3 years. We even had the "Swedish porn pine"effect on the walls and ceiling. One of the first jobs I did was to remove the pine slats in the kitchen.when I removed the strips from the kitchen ceiling I could read the writing on the underside of the roof boards, the strips had been nailed directly into the rafters with zero insulation. When it came to burning all the wood from the kitchen, it was all so dry that it literally went up like a " house on fire." Good luck with any issues you find in your house.
Kim Woodburn wants her blinged up cleaning gloves back lol. Great video! Couldn't of been nice but great result. Looking forward to watching the forthcoming renovation 😊
Haha... she'd totally wear them!! 😆😆 And glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
4:54...flamethrower surely?!
I wouldn't even attempt to use that cooker. Get it disconnected and removed. Even if you get a second hand one for now.

Let's meet for the first time ☺ I'm a 12-year-old boy from Japan.
I haven't had a mother since I was 1 year old. That's why the video of me cleaning while wearing pink rubber gloves was magical and exciting ♡ I'm happy that I felt like a magician mom 🥰❤
Problem is when kitchens are installed most of the time the builders will leave holes behind the units in walls and floors
So true!! I've spotted another drilled hole I need to fill!
I'm a self employed cleaner, if I was closer I'd come and help. You could do with a cat 😉The house that I clean has mice in the loft, they come out through the airing cupboard. Gotta say I am loving this series.
Do remember mice are good climbers, you will have to check the loft space.
That's what tonight's video is all about!
I’ve just subscribed, looking forward to your journey with your new property, rats/mice. 🙀
My cottage was like this flashbacks! Please please get yourself a 3m mask for all of this though. Between the toxic cleaning fumes and mice stuff no healthy for the lungs
Please wear a mask and gloves when cleaning mouse dropping, you can get very sick!
Came back to say to make sure you keep the grass surrounding your home mowed down, this will discourage mice outside the home as well! Keep any piles of rubbish as far as you can from the house too
I just couldn't! I admire you, though. New subscriber ❤
Thanks for subbing! ❤️
Plenty to keep you guys busy here...Look's like a great project👌👌
Not sure if you've noticed but a a furry little friend appears on screen at 14:47!!!
Thanks! And are you having me on? 🤣
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK nope…it’s rapid. But it looks like a 🐭 to me🤣
Lol... thankfully just a pound coin 🤣
The cooker directly in the dump. Don't eat after mice . O.M.G. HELP.
😆
There is nothing humane in keeping a mouse alive they will move right back in especially with the overgrown yard that I see.
Vicky, Just to let you know that a mouse can get through any hole the size of a bic biro end.
That really is frightening!!!!
Have tried both types of traps. Without question I've had better luck with the non-humane ones.
no need for kick boards to be so tight ffs! leave a 5mm gap at the top!
I completely agree!!!!!!!!
Came across this video and need to say in massive capitals DO NOT USE A COOKING APPLIANCE OR CLEAN MOUSE OR ANY DROPPINGS WITHOUT FULL RESPIRATORY PROTECTION and I hope you binned the vacuum after otherwise you'll be sporing off their pathogens all around your interior
We put lots of humane rodent buzzers in our loft they plug into a socket and emmit a high pitched noise every minute or so. I have 5 of them up there so there is only a few seconds between when one buzzer sounds. We haven't seen any more signs of mouse droppings or nibbles on boxes since when we put those in. They are not loud enough to hear when the loft hatch is closed. Please do not use bait poison because other animals up the food chain can eat the dead mouse and they will also die. My aunties cat was poisoned and passed away due to eating a previously poisoned mouse.
Thanks so.much for the advice and word of warning! I have now bought AMZ plugs.. is this the same as yours?
What no rolls of 50 pound notes found ? Good video as usual I love it ,it's gonna be sooo nice 👍👍
My mum keeps saying there might be money in the radiators lol
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 😂😂👍
Vikkie you sure you have mice ? after seeing what you were finding under the kitchen cupboards I think it’s the Borrowers living under there 😊 seriously though you are doing a great job and I know it’s going to look amazing when it’s finished and I can’t wait to see the progress each week. Just stay safe and wear some protective gear like a face mask when brushing up droppings etc !
Yes, i need to remind myself to do that!!!!! I really wasn't expecting that under the oven!!! I've since seen photos from the neighbours who helped clean the place for the previous owner and couldn't believe how much worse it used to be... this was nothing 😅
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK we had an issue with a mouse in our kitchen and I eventually found where it was getting in and blocked the hole up, about a year later we had to call an engineer out to our oven and when he pulled it out there was a dead shrivelled up mouse behind it, the engineer really wasn’t happy and wouldn’t go near until I had removed it 😂
🤣🤣🤣 I would be the same it seems lol. I can cope with a lot, but not dead animals lol
Hans is so sweet ❤
Omg you definitely should wear long thick gloves and a face mask when cleaning that kind of stuff. Rodents are incontinent and as they run about they leave a wee trail behind them so everywhere needs disinfecting. And places mice can enter : vents set into outside walls, I bought Mouse Vents to screw over mine : they are fine metal grids made to ensure they can’t squeeze into floor spaces from outside. Nice can squeeze into holes much smaller than they are, size of a pencil I think I heard, so every hole needs to be checked and filled. Once they get inside and set up home it’s very hard to completely get rid of them. You need to be very vigilant for a long time. Sorry to be negative but I’ve learnt by experience. Also the electronic mouse plug in deterrents I found useless. Only good thing I think if you have mice you don’t have rats so could be worse!
You think that's bad it's a palace compared to the one we got from auction. It had pigeons in the two bedrooms and rats living under the bath panel and chewed through the wiring 😂
Your dog is protecting you that's why he's round your legs...he doesn't know where the threshold is....also the mice will be coming through that cooker hood grill pipe...I had same problem with the rumble dryer...I replaced the plastic with flexible metal pipe that they can't chew
Ah, I'll look I to those!!!!
Home appliances should all be scrapped don't bother cleaning them
That's the plan as soon as we can
Don't stress girl calm down❤❤❤❤❤
It turns out I don't like mice 😬😬😆
How disheartening. Gotta commend you for mucking right into it like a champ. Some jobs (house cleaning) can often be farmed out to a professional for a reasonable fee.
When it comes to critters, Warfarin based products will kill them off over a few days to a week - they tend to go outside for water then die there. You do need to be careful to keep Hans under scrutiny as he might chow down on them. I really feel for you but keep it up sport, you get there eventually and can claim your space.
Sadly you have a lot of mice, a handful of humane traps will not work sadly. If you see your wiring insulation being nibbled on
you may have to go with something less humane. The plug in sonic option does seem to keep the out of the house. The scent from mice and rats will mean you have the potential for visitors when you have your first cold snap or if there are fields being harvested near you. Your loft space is a haven for them especially with friendly insulation. Looking forward to watching you grafting through this one👍👍
Use the tippy traps they allow a Mice in them it tips up and then the door shuts behind them, take the trap and mouse far away as possible and release it, nice work at least you know it’s clean, change that extraction pipe they could be coming in there, probably find more 😊
We had tiny field mice in the shed and under the decking, I caught 30-40 over a few months, but they reproduce so quickly it’s hard to keep up, anyway this year not seen any, would normally see them most days, the house backs onto school fields so that’s why we got them originally 😁
Note to self Should type a comment after watching the whole video lol,
Have a look at the drain hole where the gutter pipes drain into, make sure there is a grate or some kind of cover that still allows rain water to drain out, but no rodents can swim and invade your yard and back garden! Make sure all holes that lead to sewers are properly covered! Mice and rats are good swimmers!
Good point! Also Vikkie, beware that mice will want to inhabit your van. I once had rats take up residency in my campervan while I was in the South of Spain. I must have picked them up when I parked near some bins! They or it ate the cables behind my dashboard. I would clear all vegetation away from around the van and keep the area clear. Better still, park it inside a very large tent. You could make a tent using timber and large cling film. Winter is coming so it might be a good idea to do that anyway.
Thanks! I'll be on a hunt with a checklist!!
Omg, this is starting to sound really scary 😳😳
Me. Too 😁
Why don't kitchen cupboards ever go to the ceiling?
Best of luck you 2. Maybe a doggies best friend should be a cat.!!! I guess that would be classed as a inhumane trap!! But their bloody effective 👍
Urgh that mouse under the grill was something else. Hopefully it didn't take too long for the dog to settle in he looked very nervous at that point.
Hans has relaxed so much more now thankfully. Sadly I don't think he's a fan of moving house. He did exactly the same thing when we moved on the boat and sat on my lap every chance he had, which is unusual for him. But that was cosier than here.
My mouse deterrents are the rodent control officers, aka cats; Mayhem, Catastrophe, Kudos, and Spooks best rodent system I’ve ever had.
Mice can get through a 10mm hole so get a couple of cats is the answer I think. Looking forward to more very good videos.
This is what scares me. There are angled vents at the back... I've tried to put my fingers in and I thought they were too small. Or they went in through the front when the front door when it was open
Mice can climb up the outside walls and get in any gaps in the roof area to the loft, they can get in via gaps in the foundation so the only way to keep them out is to make the building air tight I'm afraid. Back to the cats idea.
@@jacktar6877 Yes, I agree. Two cats and a Yorkshire Terrier.
I tried humane traps to sort out the mice under my shed... never caught one. Went to poison traps and I had to replace them as the mice were still inside the trap. As I have replaced the walls in the shed, one still to go I have been installing stainless steel anti-rodent mesh down.
As much as I love small rodents they have destroyed £1,000s of electrics and other items that should have caused fire damage, along with destroyed carry bags, hard carry cases (finding a dead mouse next your impact driver is disturbing) and insulating foam.
Watching in Budapest.
Thanks for watching ❤
Haven’t seen you since you were in Benefits Street. Nice to catch up.
Not sure what this means
