  • The difference between interference engines and non-interference engines!
    Interference engines have a lot of advantages over non-interference engines, but the latter is still produced. What are the differences? Can you still bend valves in a freewheeling motor? What can cause internal engine interference? Steve will answer that and more in this video!
    It's good to know if your engine is interference or non-interference, but it's best to treat every engine like it's of the interference design when working on timing components!
    Freevalve engines, while not discussed in the video, can still be an interference or non-interference design, the only difference is what is opening the valves.

    I've recently gone down the combustion engine rabbit hole, and came across the term non-interference engine in relation to a timing belt repair. That led me to this video. Very well done...perfectly explained. My curiosity has been sated...for now. Now, back down the rabbit hole.

    Thank, I'm in the process of purchaseing a 2015 Fiat 500 non-turbo.
    The car has 71k miles on it. It's due for the timing belt, tensioner and water pump to be replaced.
    I'm going to use this video as ammunition at the dealership to either have them do the service on the car or reduce the purchase price of the car.
    If they won't do either than it's time to walk away from the car and find a different one.
    Thanks for the video! Good job!

    i heard that you can also drop the compression of a cylinder by changing the lengh of the con rods to smaller ones, if u wanna turbocharge an non turbo engine and in the mean time fix an interference engine.

    i have a question......can piston tops be designed in such a way alone that it can fall in the non interference motor...with.........an existing interference motor? since its man made and we have the technology for cutting drilling grinding........why or cant we "experiment'?

    • @CarsSimplified
      @CarsSimplified  26 днів тому

      The piston tops are a key component in that, and when the rest of the design is close enough, that can be done! On a lot of interference engines, the piston would have to be significantly altered (more so than grinding would allow) which would also affect the compression ratio in a way that hinders power. If interference is the main limitation when it comes to redline RPM, some of that power loss could be made up for, but at that point you're going to have to build the whole engine with that in mind.
      It's not something that is done often, but it can be done!

      @@CarsSimplified and what if one doesnt need that much power....example.....the car should be able to do a to z and back......not those 1/4 mile types or 10 second cars.....more in the lines of..........reliability....long distance once is a while of 500km....thereafter 20km a day and 3 km weekends only.........

      @@CarsSimplified ok lets take an example.......lets say....a standard 1.3 2e engine carb......does the head cylinder needs to change completely for the piston tops if the piston tops were to change to non interference?

    • @CarsSimplified
      @CarsSimplified  25 днів тому

      Between changing the piston shape and using a different cam or rocker arm design, I imagine there are a decent amount of engines that could be altered in that way, but those parts may have to be custom made. Sometimes in hot rodding parts from other engines are discovered to work on an engine someone desires to upgrade, so there may be cases of that available for this hypothetical non-interference conversion, but finding parts like that would take some serious research. For all that, you would have to take the cylinder head off, but barring some unforeseen engine-specific issue, the cylinder head could remain unmodified.
      There are also cylinder head spacers that could help, but I haven't ever looked into those, and I would assume they would have limitations with various engine designs.
      Overall, a conversion is hypothetically possible, but the research, work, and costs involved are probably why there is so little information online about how to do it.
      I like your idea, don't get me wrong! If I had the budget for multiple project cars, I would be tempted to find an interference engine car I could attempt this with.

    • @MidnightMarrow

      Non-interference engine, should be fine unless something else happened.

  • @konquer247
    @konquer247 3 роки тому +3

    One way to convert an interference to a non-interference engine is to sandwich a cylinder head spacer between the engine and the head.
    The thickness of the spacer depends on the maximum depression of the valve. Of course you lose compression, but it'll be safe for more boost.

    Very nice explanations! Although i have a question, for example do you happen to know precisely if the N47 BMW engine is an interference engine or not? Because when I replaced the chains, I could rotate the crankshaft as long as I want, and it didn't feel to collide with anything (with the camshafts locked in place with the timing kit). Btw, the car works perfect since then, so no issues.

    • @Real-Ruby-Red

      If the crank could rotate a full engine stroke with the cams locked then it's a non interference engine, if it wasn't your crank would stop when it hit the valves
