Nolan knew he was working with a master. Both are on top of their craft.
I think that's why the minimal amount of direction (a note) worked, and no more was needed. They're both pros.
What not how.
nolan is not at top of his craft, someone like Fincher or Scorsese
@@anshtripathi7035what’s that based on?
@@anshtripathi7035Well if we’re just gonna spout meaningless opinions, Nolan left Scorsese in the dust a while ago. Just compare Irishman to Oppenheimer. The Irishman was bloated and overindulgent while Oppenheimer was a cinematic tour de force and a turning point for Nolan.
Two notes is seven years is just as much a testament to Oldman's fantastic acting abilities as it is to Nolan's ability to direct.
Not really. I would feel left out.
@@Woodsaras how YOU would feel doesn't really mean anything. Oldman is sure in his abilities and is sure that chris is sure of his abilities, otherwise he would get more notes
@@harryyyyyyyyyyy7273 Nah, your comment is just clueless. These people will never be honest with journalists. They will never speak negatively about their colleagues, or critique them because they are afraid not to get work in the fufure. Hence they will speak like politicians. Just listen actors on actors. Fkng pathetic. Everybody is deep in each other azz, though in reality things are always much more heated.
@@harryyyyyyyyyyy7273 Oldman is sure in his abilities? Doubt that. He probably doesn't give a fk, because he's old.
He wasn't that old lol he was only 47 years old when the first film came out so he was even 1-2 years younger when the production started, he was more like 45 at most @@Woodsaras
Well... you are also Gary Oldman. You are one of the best living actors and I would imagine you dont need alot of direction. It is always great watching you perform.
a lot, not alot.
Shut up you fucking tool. @@CB-xr1eg

Living???? Someone don’t tell him
@@cosmicgamingunlimitedyou made me totally freak out there thinking I some how didn’t know he had died 😂you little blighter you.
You tell that to Gary Oldman because that's all Gary Oldman needs. Mans an icon.
I love the way Gary speaks, could listen to him all day
The way he can use just one word and like wow. People are still talking about it | "What do you mean everyone?" | "EVERYONE!!!"
Gary Oldman and Christopher Walken are two actors with outstanding vocal rhythm.
Absolutely. I’m not anywhere near the field of acting, but I feel better for just hearing a thoughtful master speak of his craft.
I had no idea he was English 😮

Three men and a Nolan?
One of the greatest actors of our generation
WELL SAID
Gary Oldman in Leon The Professional hands down one of my all time favorite villians.
Everyone !!!
He was fantastic as a crazy man!!!!!!!
Two grand masters work together on a masterpiece. In seven years two notes given. Results? Clearly worthwhile.
Shaman

Gary oldman won a spot on my top 5 when he was in Dracula and he has held that spot for what 30 give or take years.
F#$kin legend
Oh yes
The metamorphosis he does on his characters is some of the best in cinema/TV history. Seriously.. there's some actors you barely feel it's Gary Oldman and he still delivers the hell out of it
For me it was "State of Grace...." 1990.
When it comes to versatility and litteraly becoming the character Gary is the best he can go from playing a straight cop like commissioner Gordon to someone like Sid Vicious and there both 2 completely different entities mans a chameleon
@@americanwoman445 Same. I absolutely fell in love with Gary as Jackie (and Robin as Kathleen...felt so bad for her). That's one of the most overlooked movies ever made.
Oldman is such a bloody good actor. I hope there plenty more films left in him
Gary Oldman is one of the best and so is Nolan. We were blessed to see them work together on those movies
Gary Oldman is the man behind one of the most epic intros to a movie ever made. "Dracula" that raw rage is nearly unmatched.

@disastermaster1413 yes, but Gary played the bad guy, stanslin. Spelling that wrong
Gary Oldman is a legend, one of best actors ever to come out of England. Loving Slow Horses, thanks Mr Oldman!
Oldman is an absolutely top class actor.
90s Gary Oldman is a masterclass in character acting. True Romance, The Professional, The Fifth Element, Beethoven,& Dracula. The acting is flawless and each character couldn’t be more different than the other. Method actors need not live as the character 24/7 but just talk to Gary & get his secret garden of character ability. On par or better than Brando, Daniel Day Lewis and anyone else you can name. The diversity of his filmography is astounding! 😳
His masterclasses aren't isolated to the 90s. He's absolutely killing it as Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses atm.. and his Churchill was amazing as well!
@@3655butters Churchill possibly but not Lamb. The character doesn’t have the depth or uniqueness as his younger characters. My fave is True Romance & The Professional, not to forget Zod in Fifth Rlrment. He’s too old to be a chsnealon anymore. It happens to every actor. You csn play old characters when young but not young when old. You think he’s playing Drexel as a 70 y/o? Parts dry up for actors. It’s why he’s doing tv now, not film and why Hopkins plays Odin in a freegin superhero movie(s). You have your time to be any age or person when 20-40 but typically after you’re relegated to much more narrow set of characters.
You missed The Firm and Leon. Those two are amazing performances.
JFK as well, he nailed the complexities and oddities of Lee Harvey Oswald brilliantly
@@CL2005Leon, was also The Professional
That also speeks to the legendary talent of the actor
I love Gary! This is the dynamic when you have two award-winning, top-of-the-game professionals who not only respect each other but also understand each other’s goals and intentions for the film.
Gary Oldman is just amazing.
Gary is fucking great. Fan for over 30yrs

I like listening to people who are well informed and talented.
I’ve had a crush on Gary for years. He puts so much soul in his characters.
Oldman... I get shivers man. You're an amazing actor. You are my answer when anyone asks me about my favorite actor. And you're not wrong. That bit of direction was genius. "There's more at stake". Brilliant.
The greatest most underrated actor of all time.
He can literally play anything and make it an oscar worthy performance.
I doubt anyone underrates Gary.
Probably most actors have anxiety knowing they will work with the man
Love Gary Oldman. He's a great actor that should get more accolades! 👏
First time i saw himi knew he was going to be a great actor. Sid and Nancy exposed me to his work. Basquiat he was even better.
The people that know do. Gary is one of the best to ever do it
Gary Oldman is incredible in "Slow Horses".
Gary Oldman is an absolutely phenomenal actor. He can be the most intimidating, scariest person on screen or the funniest, most loving. I know he's far from underrated but I feel like he should be way more acknowledged for how great he truly is
Total legend, such an unassuming man and can act most so called stars off the stage/screen.
Perfect Commissioner Gordon... Perfect Cat Woman Perfect Batman,Joker, Bane...Dark Knight Trilogy is just so beautifully made
Two notes in seven years also shows how much confidence they both have in each other's' capabilities as an artist!
Him & John Hurt are 2 of the best actors to ever grace the screen.
I am not in the industry but as a complete outsider I imagine that Gary Oldman is a joy to direct.
Each masters of their own craft, very little needed to be said.
One of the best actors of all time
" Just to adjust the volume " this take actually shows how much skilled and professional he is, He can can adjust the same energy up and down several times, that's insane skill...
One day I was dining at a restaurant, and saw Chris. I know he is not much small talker so I nodded and started to check to menu. I was about to give an order for salad and Chris leaned over and said: there is more at steak. Then I know i need to order steak and I appreciate his fantastic piece of direction.

Apparently Nolan give freedom for actors to express themselves, it must be nice environment for them.
A fantastic piece of direction for a fantastic actor who immediately perceived the meaning and reflected it. I don't think every actor can do like Gary.
Also Nolan works with legendary actor like you, Sir. Your caliber helped him so much.
I worked at a theatre when Dark Knight came out. For 3 or 4 months any time I had a free couple of minutes I would slip into a showing and watch for as long as I could. For as great as Heath was I still came away from that experience thinking Gary’s performance was the best in the movie. So understated yet always emotionally present. A true master class
The little look and embarrassed smile he gives when the accountant for the mob(his name escapes me) is delivered to the police station is so simple yet pure class.
The Professional
The best he ever did 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
"I like these calm little moments before the storm. It reminds me of Beethoven."
Check out Slow Horses if you haven't already. Oldman is phenomenal in it.. of course
Professional & True Romance- 90s his peak…as was cinema. Now we have dog shit APC films. The best 90s films could never be made today. Such a box of trash pc and forced diversity quotas have put
It’s on YT! He’s the balls 😂
Two geniuses working together
Mr. Oldman is my favourite actor. Him speaking about just getting to the point is spot on! Love it!
Gary Oldman is one of my all-time favorite actors, and I had no idea he is British
Then you definitely need to watch his portrayal of Winston Churchill.
In Darkest Hour. He disappears into Winston Churchill completely
And for a really low-key restrained minimal performance, watch him in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy as George Smiley.
I don’t think he raises his voice all the way through the movie and he does that clever trick of making you think about him even when he’s not on the screen.
"State of Grace..." He was epic in that.
The Professional (1994)
Air Force One (1997)
The Book of Eli (2010)
Plays Mickey Featherstone kinda
Gary's so damn humble he doesnt realize he's also wuch a master of his craft that Nolan didnt need to give him much in terms of notes. Nesrly everything and every role Oldman has ever taken on is both iconic and flawlessly brilliant.
Nolan has no Ego to hold up. He's humble.
He must be preparing for his next role as Master Splinter from the Teenage mutant ninja turtles!
best actor on the planet
Gary Oldman seems to me to have something that is hard to define but so fascinating.
To spend an afternoon, a day, whatever with him would be a wonderful thing. I admire him, he seems to be just a very cool dude.
Gary Oldman is becoming the new Ian McKellen. They're so polite and humble with ppl, explaining with good words and the details that we need to understand their points. Not only great actors, but truly masters of acting.
Brother you are an awesome Dracula
He was THE Dracula...makes my heart go pitter patter still ❣️
I Loved him in the movie,( The Professional ). I did not know that he had an English accent. I Loved the movie (Dracula ) also....
When he screams "EVERYONE" at the climax is one of the best single word line deliveries I've ever seen. Any time Oldman pops online or on TV, I hear it in my head. Have since the 90s lol
@@batticusmanacleas510It is 1:00 1:00 It is also the saddest part of the film, when they kill Leon. I Loved his character in the movie. He was so stoic....

This is why being coachable is something I’ve always looked/hired for. He’s a MASTER of his craft-and, still, humble enough to receive feedback. The world would be better off if Gary wasn’t a rare breed.
Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors ever. He’s a master at his craft.
This guy is one of the best!
Nolan's work has saved my life. I absolutely adore his craft. Interstellar is one of his finest works.
He is definitely one of the best directors out there right now. Oppenheimer was a great film, but I really hope his next project is a script that he writes himself. My favorite Nolan movies are the ones where he writes AND directs. Interstellar is a great example of that, inception being another. Whenever Chris and his brother write a script together, it’s always a banger. I hope we see that in 2025.
@@TheJoyrunners I absolutely agree with you! :) I like when he writes and directs too, and a more original piece of work. I understand Oppenheimer was a bit different. That film I also enjoyed too, but wasn't a favourite of mine.

@@philiparchambault2506perennially? Or permanently?
Coming from one of the best actors out there. Respect.
Nolan is clearly someone who says what you need to hear not what he wants to say and that's a fantastic immensely selfless relationship to have with your actors.
One of the best orators I have ever seen. Gary Oldman, what a legend.
Oldman is of course correct a simple yet descriptive direction can be much more valuable than micromanaging
However oldman is a once in 5 generation talent. A man who can take a note and give you an entirely different scene and character.
Most people in their jobs deserve to be told what specific things they need to do. Otherwise they wander clueless trying to satisfy an unknown, I'm sure Nolan knew that and felt more than confident that he just needed to give a clue so that oldman knew where to look to deliver the best he could
Nolan is not a character director, he's just about the big picture. He hires good actors and expects them to do their job.
Tenet shows this well as John Washington isn't a naturally good actor and Nolan couldn't help his performance.
I think I agree with you.
I’ll watch anything that Gary Oldman is starring in. Superb Actor & can transform himself into any character. Love him!
