In "Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan", we see Doctor Manhattan seeing different parallel worlds, also an alternative flashback of what happened at the bar in Vietnam.
In this alternate reality, the Comedian wouldn't have shot the pregnant woman after slashing his face with the bottle, and then would have died because she wasn't really pregnant but hiding a bomb under her clothes which destroyed the entire bar and killed all its G.I. patrons.
Whether you consider Before Watchmen canon or not, this IS an interesting take:
Yes, the Comedian did shoot a woman, but by doing so saved everyone else at the bar, because she couldn't detonate the bomb.

Being a spoiled man, Blake was well aware of the inferiority of his life, in which there was no hope, especially in a world where cruelty and hatred are the main features of human nature. Comedian and Rorschach were the most deep and interesting characters in "Watchmen".

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 2 роки тому +16

While one could easily argue whether they’re the most “deep,” and certainly whether the most “interesting” characters, they _were_ written to be the most relatable with the reader. Whether, it’s Rorschach’s view of the illusion of an “American Dream,” and The Comedian knowing it’s all rigged, because he’s been a tool of the machine.
Both are horrible people, regardless of killing or arresting criminals, and arguably worse people then them in the world.
Blake has realized the joke of having never reached out to his daughter, or had any real relationships with anyone, which leads to him visiting a nemesis, became has no one to confess to.
All too late and futile, as Ozy had already put everything into motion, that would keep the world under that same illusion of freedom and choice.
I think Rorschach’s character, was misunderstood by most people, or at least had his problems forgiven, because he is the one who believes the truth is more important than anything, snd gives his life at the end defending that principle.
The problem is differentiating his conspiracy theory writings, with what the character actually knew.
I like Rorschach’s arc, because even the bit schizophrenic, uber violent guy, with a really odd identity disorder, is shown to be the only “hero,” who’s actually willing to die for truth, snd to bring Adrian to Justice.
So, I agree, they were the most deep and interesting characters. 😆

Comedian’s whole gimmick is satirizing life. We know it’s bad to wear masks and beat the hell out of people, but as long as you call yourself a hero, you can do it.
We know that it is wrong to set people on fire, but as long as you do it in the name of your country, it’s totally fine.

The most important part of political power is lies. Propaganda og the construction of «storys». Fictions created so the subject will accept their possition in the hirarchy.
The commedian told both the truth and lies. His biggest lie is that society can be based on the truth. It can’t . He could not handle this. Even as a narcissist and a megalo manic with a superiority complex.
He thought he could control the world. But the whole point in the watchmen was that nobody can control human nature. Not even Dr Manhattan
Depression and a cynical world view was the punishment for his crimes

I don't know the comic version of the Comedian, but in the movie I always assessed that he was the only realist among the group; a monster, but a realist. He didn't buy into shiny plans for the future, he knew the true nature of mankind and didn't flinch from staring it in the face. And that's how he knew himself completely and thoroughly and knew he was a monster and made peace with that fact. I think he's really the moral agent in the movie, when he discovered Adrian's plan, it broke him and changed him and made him ready to accept his own death. It's really a beautiful story. I love it. He's my favorite character in the movie. He loved his daughter in spite of everything. There's a lot of Vader in the Comedian.

I felt for years that he was the reason Ozzie’s plan was even noticed had it not been for Oz killing him nobody would have ever known not even Manhattan would have known. I honestly like both the novel and the extended movie I think the movie doesn’t get the credit it deserves I don’t think the novel ending would have not been as epic in the scale of a movie.

(the eyes make up the upside V or square, and the smile is a curve of the round-edge). No joke. And the Comedian is a sick loser who feeds off of tragedy. I suspect The Comedian is the wrung out version of The Joker. I dont think he was ORIGINALLY designed like that, but it might have been what the character evolved into. It seems like a DC Universe parody. Night Owl is the Dark Knight/Batman, with all his gadgets and rich inheritance. Dr. Manhatten is Superman, an untouchable god among men. Silk Specter is Wonder Woman. Vieght/Ozymandies is Lex Luthor, "the smartest man in the world." The Watchmen is a dark Justice League that shows the reality of true power.
One of the Joker graphic novels call his POV "hyper-reality,:" seeing the world as it really is. "These civilized people, they'll eat each other when the chips are down." "Let's see how loyal a hungry dog really is." This is The Comedian, and what he might have done, when he smartly realizes the most free he can be is to join the Minutemen. Why hang out with low-life hoods ("this town needs a better class of criminal) when he can hang out with super powered people that are just a push away from insanity?
Turns out The Joker/Comedian was right: EACH Watchman was eventually pushed into insanity, given that ONE bad day:
    1.)Rorschach's missing child case
2,)Night Owl's murdered Former Night Owl friend.
    3.)Specter and Manhatten's relationship breakup.
4,)Ozzy's push is the law that declared his life's work against the law.
We all think it'd be great to have super powers, but how do we treat our ACTUAL "super powered" people: (cops and politicians)? With contempt. Cops and Politicians have an actual "super" power: they can detain people, shoot people, order people around, and unlike the rest of us....they have the authority, aka "power" to do so. If you an I tried these things, detaining, shooting, and ordering people around become "kidnapping," "murder," and "Extortion." Crimes for me but not for thee. "It's all a joke."
Dont listen to me, I'm not a scholar. It's my opinion, that the Comedian is actually Old Man Joker, once an young man gets older and jaded, and the thrill of youth and violence turns into chores of cynicism and brutality.

Dave Gibbons didn't want to take the easy road by making the Comedian a maniacal Joker rip-off who cracks lame jokes all the time, so he took inspiration from actual comedians and thus gave Eddie a mustache and a cigar like Groucho Marx.

Surprising was Doomsday clock where he falls from his apartment and is suddenly teleported in DC universe and falls to the sea.

Comedian is a badass anti hero which is why people like him. Same reason why people like Judge Dredd or Spawn.

Typical depiction of delusions of grandeur that only a perverted psyche in all it's corruption & violence would make evident considering what skill, feat & access IS.

Comedian and Rorschach were the only two characters that weren't total assholes.

Oh they were all assholes, just in different ways. Nobody was innocent or really worthy of being regarded as a true stereotypical hero. But you are hopelessly deluded or possibly extreme right Wing if you think Comeidian or Rorschach Weren't assholes, plain as day.

Loved the portrayal of the comedian. Liked the character a lot too obviously he did a few absolutely terrible things but he was so interesting and was the realest one in the movie.
