Mozart was not Austrian, but Salzburger, because Salzburg, where he was born and lived there until the age of 25 years, was an independent archdiocese from 798 AD till 1803 and was not part of the Austrian monarchy in all this time. It only finally became part of Austria in 1816 - 25 years after Mozart's death.

This is one of the first pieces of classical music that I ever heard. In the 1950s, when I was growing up, children’s records had children’s music on one side, and classical music on side two or side B. So, I would play my Little Golden Record, until I was tired of it; then I would turn it over and almost reluctantly play the classical piece recorded there. This is how I first heard Mozart’s, Turkish March. 70+ years later, I am still captivated by Mozart’s genius.
The Turkish March by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is actually not a stand-alone piece, but the final movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11. This movement received its “nickname” because Mozart imitates the Turkish military music of the time (the “Janissary music”) by musical means.
My mom and dad made me listen to this when I was a baby. When I got older, the melody came to my mind, but I could never remember what this song was. And this happened to me in 2020, during the pandemic. I discovered this again 3 years ago but now I'm writing a comment🧍🏻♀️🙌🏻

The Turkish influence on western music came through the Turkish military band music (Mehter), which was at the time was the only military band in Europe. ... That's why theTurkish-influenced music works by Mozart, Beethoven or Strauss are in march ritm as they are called march.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart[a][b] (27 January 1756 - 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical period. Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works representing virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music,[1] with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".[2]
To clarify some confusion in the comments, it's called Turkish March, because it is composed in the style of Turkish Music. Not to be confused with music made by Turks, Turkish Music in this context is an early style of classical music made by Europeans, inspired by Turkish military bands. After the Treaty of Karlowitz between Austria and the Ottomans, Ottoman Sultan sent an army band and other performers to Vienna for the celebration of peace. Austrian court was really impressed by the music they played. Especially after Poland got a military band sent by the Sultan as a gift in the 1720s, every other major European Country got a military band in the same veins to not to be outdone. Then it jumped to classical music from military bands. Turkish Music in this context has the connotations of "eastern" and "military". It generally used extra percussion instruments to a standard orchestra(by standard I mean for those times) like a bass drum, triangle, and cymbals. Turkish style is always lively in tempo, and almost always a march. Mozart himself titled it "Alla Turca" because it is an imitation of Ottoman Jannisary bands. But you should be wary that it is what European imagination or idea of what Turkish music is, if you compare it with an actual march from a jannissary band of the time, the similarities are superficial imo, like the very lively tempo, but that's it. To start with, this is a piece for piano, Jannisarry bands had no similar instrument to it. They consisted of wind instruments and percussion, no string instruments. So here, Mozart is trying to imitate a type of music that's been shaped and changed by European minds and understanding of it for at least half a century. Nonetheless, it still is beautiful. Mozart be cultural appropriating before it was cool. :P
Great explanation. Thank you. I don't why but I always thought that Mozart got paid by the sultan to compose this masterpiece. It seems like a total different story.

There is a reason this music will last troughout human history and allways be here. If you take any "troll" serious claiming "boring", you deserve to have the discussion.
Well, when i hear such music, my own fantasy breaks trough and i am imagining the most epic things. Thats why i hear to this music. Its sad that so much people dont see why this i so brilliant. I dont want to convert them or something, they have their own opinions, but never judge a book because of its cover, isnt it?
I'm a huge fan of metal and rock, and their origin lies in the classical music, so I'm therefore interested in classical music. I think it sounds great, and it often has a depth that you don't find in most of the music made today. Sure, some of it is really simple and not really that great, and doesn't deserve the credit it gets. A lot of it gets a lot of credit because a certain person made it, and that person happened to make a lot of great music. Let's put this into perspective; I love the band Kamelot, and they have some really great songs, but then there are those where you feel like they took the best out of the worst just to fill up an album. Sometimes, classical music feels the same. They simply couldn't find those gems hidden away every time. That doesn't mean the music is bad. It simply means it is less good. If you don't agree with me, that is fine. If you want to voice your opinion, feel free to do so. Kindness receives kindness in return. However, if you simply want to complain, then here's to you: "Fuck you and everything you stand for."

When I was a baby, my parents would play alot of classical music for me(which probably explains my musical tastes now). This tune always stuck out to me even then. I know this because it's the only one I remember. But the last time I heard it, I had to be 4 or 5 years old. Now here I am at 22 years old, listening to it for the first time in almost 20 years after FINALLY after so long learning the name.
Reminds me of finally being able to play as wario in super Mario 64 ds again after doing so at age 4-6. I wholly know that sounds gibberish to you, but I think we feel the same. If only this nostalgia were felt more, but it's limited by the amount of memories I hold.

Amazing! I really don't understand why people say Classical is 'boring'. Pshh just bad taste in music.
***** Yes!
Bad taste full stop I'd suggest?

Nice music. I don't understand why peaople hate turks, i'm from Poland, "SO MUCH CATHOLIC ULTRAZEALOT COUNTY AGH!" and everybody hate there arabic peapole, but like turks. Ottoman Empire don't accept the anexion of Poland in 1789, Poles make Legions in Turkey to get independence in 1920. Greetings to Turks from Poland, remember, other religion don't make us an enemies ;)
I'm from Macedonia which land was part of Ottoman Empire and those people like ottomans were not humans, rather said they were savages, with radical religion view, killing and torturing people like animals...
We don't hate them because religion, but because culture and medieval mentality...People just can't forget that history coz it's too fresh, Balkan Peninsula was under occupation till 1913. Just because them, Balkan it is demoted.
Makedonid94 get over it. Nobody from back then is still alive so you have no reason to be cranky.
Makedonid94 if yoy religion is survive now it gas inly reason... and this is Ottomans. I am a Turk and i know that orur enemies loves us. Cos they know we r brave and have honour and know that Turks are only fights in the battlefields. You must not think we r like arabics
Very true my dear Polish friend. I must admit that the Ottoman empire was sometimes very cruel but so was every empire and kingdoms of that time.
Greetings from Turkey!
Greetings :D
Same sage of fire
Hey, same! My parents played loads of classical music to make me fall asleep when I was a kid. This song always stuck with me, but I didn't find the name until fairly recently. Am 24 now, and so glad to finally hear the whole thing again after so many years! XD
same w me
That's a Classic that pleases all ages. It's rock and roll!
Oh yes what a splendid piece. I do recall this being played at Lord Poshingtons party 🧐
