This was a fun episode to make. I was a little worried about lack of variety with the scenery with this video, so I decided to use the ITEM boxes and impossible jumps to make this episode more exciting!
For the lightning bolt item, I was lucky to find a 3D print file for MarioKart that I just sequentially sized down, printed and painted. But the challenge was they don’t have wheels...so…HOW DO WE GET THEM TO ROLL ON THE TRACK? I tried compressed air, but it shot the prints off the track. I tried using the Hot Wheel GoPro pushing it from behind…but it just didn’t work out. Eventually, the idea came…string a fish line through the hot wheel tracks and hot glue the print to that line. BAM!! It worked! I was really happy with the outcome!
I thought it would be awesome to use a Bullet Bill in one of my videos. After I 3D printed Bullet Bill, I glued him to an old Hot Wheel car and tested him out at home and he did awesome! But…didn’t think much about how he would do on a rocky trail…which he didn’t. I think the longest I was able to get him to travel was 1.5 feet. As I reviewed that footage, it just didn’t have the same feel as the game. So, Coleman and I ended up building a contraption with a gardening pole, camera tripod and a bunch of duct tape to give it the awesome view we ended up with. Props to Coleman for his amazing filming skills with the Bullet Bill.
I have to admit I cheated several times in this video. First on the long uphill runs and second, with the jumps. I’ve had a few people ask how we get the Hot Wheels to go uphill so smoothly. The answer is…we don’t! We actually turn the Hot Wheel backwards, and film them going downhill. Then in iMovie put it in reverse with a few tweaks to the speed…yes it is not completely authentic, but I like what the long shots give to the video. As for the jumps, traditionally I will film even up to 200 times to get a jump right…see my video “7-foot jump” to prove this...but when it comes to time management in 90-100 degree weather on a bike park track on a Saturday while our wives are watching our kids at home…yeah, no…we are going to take the quick way out here!
Now that the three groups of 2 have finished their individual tracks…they are going to meet back up together soon….at Bowser’s Castle!!!
