Edward Woodward will always be the Equalizer to me. I grew up watching the show and loved it. Robert McCall was cool, charismatic and dangerous, and he did it with such confidence and class. RIP Mr Woodward. You were great.
@@paulmcnamara4774 The Equalizer was a Great Show. The Movies with Denzel Washington didn''t do the TV Series Justice. The Series was for a Thinking Person.
Edward Woodward always came across as a really decent nice humble man with a great sense of humour ! plus what a brilliant actor he was ! Enjoyed how his sense of humour and wit came over in this interview !
Yes, there is. The show that made Edward Woodward a star in the UK: Callan. One of the best (spy) dramas British TV or anyone has ever made. The Equalizer was fun, but Callan is a genuine TV gem.
I was living in NYC when this show was running. They filmed all over the city and I had friends who worked on it. Makes me very nostalgic for those days. Edward Woodward was fantastic. Left us way too early!
He lived to 79… not bad for a guy with heart trouble, bless him. He traveled the world as an actor and singer and even had an American hit tv show. A life well lived. RIP.
I remember watching a doc about food in Quebec that Woodward narrated. It was an old show, but in the scene with the Lobster en Enclosure, Woodward delivered the description of the "Steamed, beautifully cooked, encased in a pure white meringue, bathed in a succulent buttery creme sauce, this king of lobsters graces the finest table."
Seemed like an allround decent bloke as well. Yeah he really made The Wicker Man (although Christopher Lee was superb in it as well) as were the extras/islanders for that matter. They all deserved an Oscar for creating such a creepy masterpiece imo.
Edward Woodward was so witty ...boy..its so lost on this audience!....but he was so cool and far too good for David Letterman - he is a serious actor, mind you he was amazing in The 'Wickerman' and he sings 'The way you look tonight' on the Morecombe and wise show so beautifully!
Edward was such a versatile actor, and dedicated, returning to the role after serious health issues. I also remember him fondly in the BBC drama Common As Muck grom the 1990s. RiP
I remember him doing a crime series on ITV called In Suspicious Circumstances in the early to mid 90s where he examined old crime cases that were possible miscarriages of justice or were somewhat unresolved cases such as the death of the boxer Freddie Mills. It was worth watching just for his voice and presentation skills alone. They never seem to repeat it but maybe one day it might pop up on Forces TV. Bit of a grim show at times but very well put together.
Letterman is so dumb. Woodford was far too intelligent for him and I love how he put him in his place. He is lucky Edward didnt actually thrust a sword in his intestine but i believe he got the message and yes Edward was right, Letterman is a silly show but the interview rocks ass. Memories to truly treasure without fail. Im got to grab the Equalizer boxset and relive the 80s. The best theme tune ever.... A cult classic and you will never be forgotton Edward Woodward. Peace to your sprit
Rightly so there is much praise here for Edward Woodward playing Robert McCall esepcially stating as an actor, presence and belief as compared to Denzel Washington he was so much better. But I suspect these comments her are mainly from Americans who never grew up watching Callan, in which Edward Woodward reached heights of acting, absolute and total involvement by the viewer which was far superior than playing the Equalizer. Yes there was not the location shots and stunt fights that Denzel does but like the the TV series 'I Claudius' did for the BBC which emptied the pubs when it was on and for that genre has never ben repeated again.
ive now got all 4 seasons 6 dvds per case i got all four seasons of amazon £30 Eatch 6 dvds per case with all the show all 68 shows made Edward Woodward the Equalizer!! all together thare 24 dvd cds 4 seasons sorry for my spallings guys i love it i miss you R.I.P Edward Woodward the Equalizer nick south England.....
I've never seen an original episode of The Equalizer, but I stumbled upon the Denzel Washington "re-imagined" version and totally loved it (sequel out this month - July 2018). Now I'm interested in seeing the source material. Maybe Netflix has it? [Just checked: Nope]
Letterman is winging it, but Mr Callan doesn't seem to mind. He knows that later, he'll get Lonely to take Letterman home in his cab.. Then it'll be a red file job, hence the dummy replacement..
The Equalizer's number never worked as it started with 555, as do many phone numbers in films and on TV. They realised that lots of stupid people would call it, thus used a false zip code.
Edward Woodward, who had more talent and class in his pinky fingernail than Letterman has in his whole body and the bodies of all of his relatives, was treated with utter disrespect on this show. Disgraceful.
Also brilliant in the cult movie 'Hot Fuzz' with the likes of Timothy Dalton and Simon Pegg. The DVD has the best all-cast commentary ever. Woodward admits he never learned to drive and used to hitch-hike back and forth to/from London theatres late at night after performances - lorry/truck drivers helped keep him real and down-to-earth. Sorry, misread your post. Thought you said not a single show that touches the Equalizer, missed the now bit. LOL. Still, check out Callan. Four series and a feature film between 1967-1974. With a reunion one off in 1981.
Cool video old school network rivalries wouldn't permit Dave to say more about watching the equalizer like For example Wednesday night at 10 on CBS all he could say is look for it
@4ebees same he was in eastenders breifly would have been in more episodes but had to be written out cos he knew he was going to die as he had some form of cancer and other illnesses that was his last role before he died
@Gman6755 Totally agree with you. Original stories that all the newer series rip off (not going to call any names here!), good acting and filming for the time also. Really sad to see Edward go.

Edward Woodward was a great actor. Superb in King David 1985 playing King Saul. One of my favorite actors.
That ad lib by Edward was simply fantastic.
He certainly has one of those great Shakespearian voices.
I love watching the reruns..New York always looks awesome...
Edward Woodward was a very polite and controlled while it seems like David Letterman didn't have a clue.

also A Xmas Carol, the one with George C Scott as Scrooge.

Sadly it is a boring world with out Edward Woodward equaliser
Season 2 is to be released in a few days!
Letterman did zero prep work for this interview.
Buy all the Callan DVD's, inc the film, as well.
Callan was the best thing he ever did, even better than The Wicker Man or Breaker Morant.
One of the great names in television history! Edward Woodward just seems to roll off the tongue, doesn't it?
