  • This is the Diamond Select Toys TOS phaser, a great product, which as i mentioned most trekfans probably own. I made this mainly as a comparison to the new phaser from Star Trek 11.

I had mine 12 yrs now. Everything works. I spraypainted the black handle to bronze as by the exact color by a Star Trek mag- no longer produced, to make mine as authentic looking as I can.

The Phase Pistol from Enterprise by Art Asylum is the one that is 3/4 the real size. This one is 1:1. It's actually engineered from the Phasers built for the DS9 Episode Trials and Tribbleations. If you compare this and the Rodd.com version, you find many of the proportions and details similar

None of the Art Asylum/DST Star Trek props are 3.4 scale! None.
Most of 90%-95% of actual size.
If you want to see a 3/4 scale ST prop, just look at the AMT/MPC/Round 2 Star Trek landing party exploration model kit.
That kit IS 3/4 scale to the actual TV show production props
I have that Enterprise Phase Pistol. That is a 90% scale prop! NOT 3/4 or 75% scaled down.

Right on😎 I don't know how the notion that AA Phasers were 3:4 scale got legs. That would be significantly (and very noticeably) smaller than the nominal size

Actually, all of the AA/DST ST toy props are between 90%-95% of actual production prop scale.

1- No, I was talking about the larger unit, the Type-II. Forward of the grip on the left side is a small gray dial that can be twisted. On mine, turning it does nothing. The instructions say it will turn the light on/off, but it does nothing.
2- Oh, really? Dammit- how do I keep getting lame ducks from DST!? First my HD Enterprise, and now this Black Handle Phaser! I hope my MiSB Ent-D doesn't get fouled up now...
    Thanks for your help.

I aucctually do, the bronze handle phaser doesn't "click" in the joint so if it gets swung around the phaser 1 falls out of phaser two body. With the black handle phaser it fits perfectly. Based on most i've read Diamond select toys didn't expect thrie star trek products to be such a hit so anything sencond generation isn't as good as the original, they make them alot faster and thus these problems occure.

    LOVE these Phasers!!!!!!!!

  • @rebelsatcloudnine

@CollectionDX hmm ok! 1- the grey dial on the left is soppose to only raise the silver plate in the top of phaser 1, if this does not raise up and down it might be broken, mine did the same thing so i took it apart (do this at your own risk and be very careful, there are lots if fiddly bits. 2- if its and original edition 1 phaser the lights wern't as bright as the phaser edition 2 (which is the bronze handle shown in video)
    hope this helps

there are two types of bronze phaser. the first was more brass colored and was a celebration of the 40th anniversary. the second issue darker color was done to replicate the 3rd season bronze paint shceme.

I have a new Black Handle Phaser with a few problems.
1- the gray dial on the left side of the Type-II does nothing even though it can still turn.
2- the light coming out of the Type-II is very weak compared to the smaller Type-I.
I replaced the demo batteries as soon as I opened it, so they are fresh. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Compared to the bronze handle on my Roddenberry TOS Phaser-II the AA/DST bronze
handled phaser is just a few shades too light - it's the right color, just not dark enough.
The AA/DST phaser is a toy, not a prop-replica, so its slightly smaller size is at least
partially due to the product being cross-marketed as a toy (for kids - made to fit smaller hands) and a 'replica' for collectors who can't afford the high-end full-scale true prop-replicas.

Since the wand company released their TV remote movie quality faser and Bluetooth Communicator, it makes all the diamond select range look like baby toys.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  7 років тому

I'm seriously considering their communicator, that' looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to get their Phaser, but not for the remote features. With Macfarlane toys also having access to the Star Trek Franchise, I hope they will come out with an assault Phaser. It will be nice to see if this will be competition to get DST better into gear to produce their Star Trek line, still waiting for that TNG phaser DST advertised a few years ago.

  • @rebelsatcloudnine

they did, toysrus doesn't really carry a DST product line they just get them in once and a while.

Were there phasers with bronze handles in the series? Or did they just make them because people thought they were "cool"?

  • @bandittweintraub
    @bandittweintraub 6 років тому

actually, the prop makers used several variants, gold handled, black handled and white handled

    • @rebelsatcloudnine

***** I need to replace mine as well, they unfortunatly don;t last long, but there is a small compartment on the bottom of the smaller black phaser, you unscrew the lid. Now the bigger problem is getting the batteries out, they are kinda crammed in their, so I use a small screwdriver and gently flip them out. Hope this helps

I have one, but it doesn't work anymore. Anything that uses "button batteries" only works as long as those batteries work. No replacement batteries will work. The batteries that came with it are the only batteries it can ever use. I have this issue with every item that uses "button batteries".

Why would you post a video like this when you do not know what you are talking about!
First, that, mostly all dark blue PHASER, with the dark blue rear heat dissipation fins, was a gold colored handle PHASER and NOT one with a bronze colored handle.
Art Asylum/Diamond Select did the ST-TOS PHASER plastic handle colors in gloss black, matte/flat black, matte/flat white, gloss white, matte/flat medium gray, bronze and gold!
The actual bronze handle PHASER prop from the show had a patina to the bronze metal that gave it a “sort of” brown-ish/green-ish hue.
The plastic bronze colored handle PHASER you have, is more brown colored, but still has a feel of the color of bronze to my aging eyes.
Second, the PHASERS are NOT 3/4 scale!
If you want to see a 3/4 model, look at the AMT/MPC/Round 2 Star Trek landing party exploration set model kit!
That plastic model kit is 3/4 of the original sized TV show producction props!
All the Art Asylum/Diamind Select Star Trek toy props ARE ALL approximately between 90%-95% of the full scale prop and NOT 3/4 or 75% scale.
You were way off on that.
Also, if you ever think of purchasing any of the Playmates Star Trek toy props, these are all, with some exceptions, approximately, 90% scale, from the original TV show production props, as well, with one major exception of the Playmates toys Star Trek The Original Series Tricorder.
That ST-TOS Tricorder toy, while fairly accurate, I believe that version of the Tricorder was reduced down to,,again, approximately, anywhere from between 80%-85% scale.
Playmates chose to do this drastic scaling down of the St-TOS Tricorder so that both adults and younger children, who are fans of ST, could all easily hold the ST-TOS Tricorder in their hands with no issue. It, also, explains why the carry strap was made so short and non-adjustable. They scaled down the ST-TOS Tricorder so young kids could easily carry the Tricorder with the appropriately sized carry strap for younger children and very young adults.
All of the ST-TOS Art Asylum/Diamond Select toy props are 5%-10% smallee scale than the actual Star Trek TV show production props!
