This was one of the scariest times I've ever dealt with, I live in Wichita, born and raised. Never, ever has ksn bailed on a weathercast like this. When Mr. Freeman says to take shelter, you listen. When he takes shelter, you're in for one helluva ride.
I do wanna say that JD is always so good at keeping calm in these kind of situations & trying his best to not freak everyone out, but he still gets the point across that it's a serious situation!
That "multiple information stream" is very good design! So even in the middle of a storm, reporters in shelter can still keep people informed. Smart design.
I've been in the wichita area my entire life (25 years) and I have never seen a coverage where they have had to take cover. It deflintley made things alot more real. I'm so glad the practice what they preach. KSN contintues to deliver in my opinion the best weather coverage when the weather gets severe. Good job JD Rudd and Dave Freeman.
8 year old me was terrified of this, I was in the west side of Wichita. I was sitting in our basement cold and hearing the wind blowing like crazy, holding my neighbors dog. I was tearing up every time my mother left the basement to see what was going on, thinking she was going to die 😀
This literally gives me chills to watch this. I was gone in a hospital up in Kansas City and I got a phone call from my mom saying that this was going on. I'm glad everything is okay, though.
It takes alot of courage to stand there knowing the national weather service took shelter and you havent. Great job guys im surprised the video feed didnt cut out
NWS in Wichita is right outside the fence around mid-continent whereas KSN is in downtown Wichita so they still had a little bit of time. But either way, I agree. Scary stuff man!
Some employees don't allow employers to decide if working is worth dying for. Go ahead and fire me, when the whole place is destroyed I'm likely out of a job anyway.
I stood at my front door in College Hill and thought this was the one that was gonna kill us. And then it turned East and died. They all seem to do that but this one came much farther north and west.
I was moving home back to my folks' after I graduated from Hutchinson Community College when all of this happened (took a 2 year break from schooling to figure out what I was going to do). Fortunately, I was driving North and out of the way of all this. Got home, and saw all the coverage, and yes, Dave screaming at everyone. He will forever be known to me as "Screamin' Freeman."
Our power went out before this but we were listening on the radio. I live at K-42 about a mile & a half SW of mid continent. This was basically in my backyard..
Pretty harrowing, I actually joined the live stream of this just as it hit. Hats off to the meteorologists for still doing their job in that situation.
@@VinceScaglione Depends on how bad the tornado is. Family of chasers and meteorologists and I gotta say, this was one of the most intense experiences I've had. It hits different when you're at home, where you expect to always be safe, versus being out in it. Gorgeous sound, though, just like the tornadoes in the movie Twister, it was really cool.

2013 was one hell of a fucking year. It was to tornadoes what 2020 was to hurricanes. I remember vividly watching the Tuscaloosa tornado live. I was eating Popeyes and watched 3 or 4 semis get tossed 100+ feet into the air like it was nothing.
Message to Dave Freeman and his crew: GET TO SHELTER ASAP! MOVE IT GUYS AND DON'T GET HURT! You can actually hear the "Thunderbolt 1000" model tornado sirens blaring in the background in Witchita!
You know man, we get tornadoes over here in Kyle, Texas every once in a blue moon, but there is two things that Kyle, Texas doesn’t have tornado sirens. Definitely, we need tornado sirens and also storm shelters as well. Give me a thumbs up.
Ugh I flew in and out of Wichita for a trip this weekend. Thank god a tornado didn't happen but it'd be scary to be in the airport when this would happen.
This happened the day of my high school graduation right at the end We were having our ceremony at Koch arena and they didn’t hand our diplomas to us during the event so we had to get them after it was over while also being told over the loud speaker that there was a tornado warning I didn’t have a cellphone at the time so I had to call my parents twice using a friend’s phone and another one from a teacher and I was walking around outside the arena trying to find them all while the storm was rolling in and the sirens were going I finally met up with them and my dad said we were gonna drive away from it so that’s what we did I wasn’t scared in that moment at all as I just wanted to remain calm and positive but everyone else in my family seemed rattled by it Glad it ended up not being that serious although we did have to change our plans for my post graduation party at the last second but I still had a good time
Ended up being only EF2 due to only minor damage being done compared to what could've happened. El Reno? I think May 3rd remains one fo the worst atleast Oklahoma. El Reno hit a fairly rural area so its damage path wasn't bad, it was just wide as hell and unpredictable.
To protect yourself from flying debris, also why they’ll tell you to go to the middle of the house/structure(if you don’t have a basement), put as many walls between you and the outside.
This is why people need to heed the warnings. Pat Metheny and Lile Mayes (Or is it Mays?) were in that horrible tornado on April 10, 1979. They lived through it and made an album and video about that experience. It's called "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls." I listened to it with headphones on recently, and it really brings that aweful day back in 1979, because we were having our own severe weather that week in Atlanta, Georgia. I've lived through two tornadoes, and no matter how big or small they are, they scare me almost as much as flash floods. Just the sound of the drums and synthesizers along with the ghastly scenes. What I love at the end of the album and video is that you can hear children playing in the distance in the school playground. It just shows how strong and resilient people are when put to the test.
Legend has it that Ryan still wanders around that studio in search of the basement.
