I use spackling paste as well for my roads. However, I use a screed to for the initial leveling. A screed is a straight edge that spans the edges of the foam forms. Basically you over fill the forms then slide the screed along the forms so that the excess pastes is scraped away leaving the top of the road surface even with the top of the forms. This is the same method used in actual concrete work.
tombensky Yes, that is a better way of doing it, and I had originally planned on doing something similar as I had done that method on an old larger HO scale layout but I didn’t in this case mostly because I was lazy and didn’t want to add more strips of plastic or wood along the edges of the layout that I would then have to pull out and patch. But your method is definitely the way to go for longer consistent road sections.
liked this , My modeling is a little different as I do 1:12th scale live steam industrial plants but modeling is modeling so I subscribed in case I can use some of your ideas
