  • Do you want to rent a car in Switzerland? Please do it, you will have the best time when driving in Switzerland. Switzerland will be your oyster and you can travel from the Swiss Alps in Zermatt, Grindelwald or Interlaken to cities such as Geneva, Zurich or Basel in just hours and at your own schedule. Or it could be a cheaper option for you than the train. In any case, try to avoid the rush hours and commuter traffic as well as the closed Swiss Alps mountain passes in winter and you have literally no obstacle in your way to write your best Swiss holiday story.

    and apparently if you drive, you have to watch your speed because you can get tickets very easily even going over the speed limit by a tiny bit.

    Hi Greg, I wondered if you can answer a question for me. I plan on renting a car while in Switzerland but we are going to drive one day into France and another day into Italy. What is the procedure for crossing the border in a car? Do they just check your passport and your good to go or what do you have to do at the border exactly? I actually have a outstanding speeding ticket in France from about 4 years ago. I was worried they might see that when I try to cross the border but I don't know if they check that sort of thing or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

      Hey Brad, although Switzerland is not in the European Union it is part of the Schengen Zone, which means free movement of people between these countries and no standard border checks (unless it‘s Corona special situation, which may change daily now). All countries surrounding Switzerland and Switzerland itself are part of Schengen Zone. This means there are no official passport checks. How does it go about by car? Some border crossings are staffed some are not. If they are staffed you drive in a line (slow) to a customs officer that evaluates if they have more questions. In most cases, they don‘t have questions. If they do have questions it’s often about if you have goods to declare. I hope this answers your question! Im working on a website switzerlandinsider.ch where there is a section about border and customs.

    When relocating to Switzerland, what are the best options buying or leasing? What do swiss people prefer?

    • @SwitzerlandInsider
      @SwitzerlandInsider  2 роки тому +1

      You can do both, but try to ask people such as new coworkers for garage recommendations as this will safe you a lot of money. The car industry is the same everywhere ☺️

    I had been to Switzerland 10 years back. Stayed in interlaken country side. Planning to come back after the current crisis. This time I want to drive and see the beautiful scenery. Any suggestions?

    • @SwitzerlandInsider
      @SwitzerlandInsider  4 роки тому +1

      It‘s always a good thing to revisit 😉 if you want to see more mountains, then I suggest you head East from Interlaken and drive over Sustenpass (open spring to fall) direction to Andermatt. From there you can either take a mountain pass (spring to fall) to Graubünden (South Eastern Switzerland) or go to the West to Valais and then continue onwards to Lake Geneva. Both regions are in the Alps and you will enjoy. From Andermatt you can also take the historic San Gottardo pass (spring to fall) to the Italian part of Switzerland called Ticino. If you like to experience „flat“ Switzerland, then have a look around Murten. For a full immersion, try to avoid highways (except in winter where the mountain passes are closed) 😉 you can reach all destinations also by country roads and stop on the way wherever you like! Take care and hope you can visit soon, it looks promising!

    Hi from Indonesia! I was in Switzerland and bought swiss travel pass (Half Fare Pass). I am thinking about rent a car for my next trip to Switzerland, but I can't drive. Is it possible to get personal driver? Any suggestions from you? How can I rent a car? Thanks a lot:)

      Hey Dina, great you enjoyed the trains and want to try a car! There are plenty of guided tours by car. Maybe you can contact one and ask if you can have a tailored tour. If not you can always travel with someone who has a license and book a car on one of the bigger rental companies. Hope this helps! 😉

    Hi! Can i rent a car at Basel airport and drive to Interlaken without issue? I mean BSL its on the French side, should i be worried about vignette for French side and Switzerland side or the rental cars have them ?! 😊
    Where does BSL airport belong to ? 🤔
    Thanks ❤

      Hello! Basel airport has 2 sides, one in france and one in switzerland. Although the entire airport is in france… you will most likely land on the swiss side. Then you get your rental car and ask the guy about the sticker. Most of the cars have one already. Dont worry about navigating at the airport its really small. And dont worry about toll in france as the next toll booth is like half an hour drive from the airport. Hope this helps, enjoy your trip!

    I recall years ago it was much cheaper to hire a car on the French side of Geneva airport than the Swiss side?
    Speeding fines are eye watering, the police have credit card readers for instant payment on the spot. 1 or 2 kph over limit is enough to be issued with a ticket, no 5 mph plus ten percent. If you go mad as some motorcyclists might be inclined to do, the Swiss police are empowered to confiscate your license on the spot and if you have been really silly the bike or car as well as your license. Strange, as next door, metaphorically speaking, you can go as fast as you like on the unrestricted autobahn. Have your fun in Germany and drive or ride like nun in Switzerland. If you are driving your own car/bike on the highway buy the vignette, much cheaper than the fine for not having one, also avoiding the anxiety Swiss police seem to have very little to do except issue tourists with expensive tickets. If I were fined for being 1or 2 kph over, I would never visit Switzerland again, Austria is very pleasant, not as expensive without the extreme revenue gathering police force. But be warned, in Austria don’t be silly either, they will fine you on the spot but not potentially based on your salary.

      What's the "Vignette"?

    • @jeanjacques9980
      @jeanjacques9980 2 роки тому

      @@nagomizik9358 If you drive or ride in Austria or Switzerland and use main roads; highways, you must purchase a sticker. 40 Swiss Francs, valid for a year, no short term cheaper option, Austria €10 for ten days. If you don’t bother or fail to display sticker police will fine you on the spot, very expensive fine in Switzerland. There are also tolls to pay on the road. No free lunches in Europe, Germany is good, no sticker required, few toll roads.

I have come to a conclusion to go with SIXT, pay for their full coverage and pray to God they don't try to extort more money. Any other ideas please?

      Hey Rajesh! If you are only going to Interlaken then I would take a car (beautiful road on the way: ua-cam.com/video/6XV0ZEdzQ24/v-deo.html ) however it always depends what you do there and how long you will stay. If you only drive to Interlaken and then park the car for a week, then maybe take the train ;-) Nevertheless, if you are back in Zurich, I would return the car immediately as you would not need it in the Zurich area (except maybe to go to Rhine Falls) and parking cost in the city is high and it is always congested. The airport is about 10 minutes by train from the city center so it's not a problem. If you have more questions, please let me know!
