  • Hi guys, here's another tune that flips back and forth between a rhumba and a shuffle. This is probably the one that started them all! Audiences still love this song and with good reason-- between BB's guitar hook at the beginning and his soaring vocals, it's quite a thrill ride. I spend the first part of the lesson breaking down the guitar on the first 12 bars, then discuss his stabbing chord comping during the sax solo (try an overdriven tone), then talked about how to approach this song within a guitar-bass-drums trio-- that'll give you a workout!

Wow, yet another awesome lesson! Back in '85, I took my 70yr grandmother to see B.B. at Gilly's here in Dayton OH. She was a big fan! He played two shows that night, we went to the first. After that first show, B.B. retired to his bus, I walked my grandmother over to the bus. B.B. driver and manager were standing outside, I asked if it was possible if we could meet King..but his manager said that he was eating..I told him that my grandmother had been a very good friend of jazz pianist Clarence 'Fat Daddy' Hall. The manger went back into the bus, and came out with a smile..King wanted to talk to my grandmother. Mr. Hall had played with King many times..my grandmother knew this. King greeted my grandmother like the queen she was..My grandmother acted like a 16yr fangirl,,I tried not to be a fanboy, but couldn't help it. I did tell King that I played guitar, and had met Freddie King, and that I had sit-in with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, and played in Piney Brown's band. We didn't stay long at all, maybe 15mins. King did autograph a promo picture for my grandmother Liz..

You’re so cool, and can sing this falsetto BBK stuff so good… And when you describe that C6 and the F7 at the 12th fret as “that Honky Tonk thing”, it made me both happy and sad. Happy that-like me-you and call certain chords and rhythms after their songs and artists…and sad that I don’t know how many blues guys there are left in the world who will know Bill Doggett, Billy Butler, or that wicked-cool Honky Tonk chord thing! But I’m sure in good company, and proud to know ya’ man! Great job!
