  • Following Mussolini's execution on 28 April 1945, his body, after being abused by a huge crowd in Milan was buried by the US Army. But, in 1946, grave robbers stole his remains. So began the decade long hiding of Mussolini's remains by fascists and government officials - a truly bizarre story!

I watched a History Channel documentary on Mussolini and one of the interviewees was a former partisan who was there when Mussolini was killed. He was 16 years old at the time and had NO idea it was going to happen. The leaders of the group pulled out Mussolini and Clara Petacci, put them up against the wall and it was over with quickly. The then 16-year old said to himself "WHAT did I just see?" In telling the story he still had a bewildered look on his face after 50+ years. As he put it "I thought they were just going to turn him over to someone in authority, the Americans, the British, or the new Italian government."

There are also a few black and white pictures from Mussolini's autopsy, taken by an officer at the time. My father was a combat photographer and was asked to develop them. Mark, my grandfather was in Naples recovering from injuries suffered in N Africa when the photographer who took a photo of the bodies hanging upside much earlier before all the crowds showed up , came through selling copies. We still possess the photo, as well as a few other things that he brought back. My great uncle was on the liberation of Buchenwald and I remember seeing pictures of bodies stacked in rail cars. As a child and an American, I couldn’t understand what I was looking at at that time, but in my 50’s , I understand much better that what we saw was the worst of mankind. An interesting video would be on Italian Admiral Francesco Maugeri. In James Jesus Angleton's JKF assassination testimony, Angleton alleges that his primary contact in Italian intelligence was an Admiral Maugeri. Angleton goes on to say that Italian Submarines were set up by Maugeri and sent to unknowingly be destroyed by British destroyers. He also relayed shipping information to British Intelligence between Rommel in North Africa and oil depots in Sicily.

@@danteardenz2670 I believe that's likely true. However, Angleton's testimony is pretty clearly corroborated by the testimonies of other OSS officers stationed in west Europe. Angleton explain the "treason" by explaining that after WW1, Italian naval officers were trained along side British officers. A system was devised where, in a future conflict, Italian naval forces would be used as auxiliaries along side the British navy. Another interesting segment from Angleton's testimony is that allegedly, blueprints to the German enigma machine were found EIGHT years before the break out of WW2. He continues by claiming that by the end of the war, nearly 90% of intelligence reports to Hitler were false, planted stories.
Angleton is an incredibly interesting character with dozen of fascinating rumors.(blackmail pictures of mob figures as well as J Edgar Hoover) A deep dive into his connections with Israeli intelligence would be very interesting considering his role in funneling nuclear secrets from US labs to the Dimona Nuclear lab in Israel.

@@dodobirdtime No citizens! Just communists and winners of ww2. Signore Mussolini was a very important person of fascist Italy and Europa in that time. Also he was icon of Fascism and base of a new NSDAP movement, in early and late 20s and 30s, in the Middle of Europa. When Herr Hitler was created NSDAP and Nazism, Mussolini was inspiration of him. The same was with also Francisco Franco, Oswald Mosley, Austrian Fascist movement, ect. Mussolini was a first person about that ideas and he also know a lots of British and French interior and exterior policy, before and during ww2. So, Mussolini was killed from winners of ww2 not accidentally than with a plan and with a good reason. Like Adolf Hitler, he was enemy number one after ww2 between winners of the war. Simple as that! Do I need to remind people about the Holodomor, Purges, Great Leap forward, Khmer Rouge etc, etc. the Communist ideology has consistently committed many genocides & atrocities, up to even today (Uyghurs in China for example).
